I found a way to get it out from the top. I used a body saw to cut the back left corner of the battery bracket off just enough to allow me to work the starter out the top. It saved tons of agnoy trying to figure out how to do it somewhere else and it is faster.

This video was fantastic! I just did it myself on a 2005 colorado, 2wd, 4cl. Pulled it out the top after disconnecting a bunch of wires. (Took *me about 7 hours tho.) THANKS!
