This video--contrived and acted out for public consumption--was a rare exception. If a shop has a Royal Warrant, she's billed for the purchase and her accountants pay for it; otherwise, a lady-in-waiting holds the purse strings and pays for items. She used to shop at Harrod's in person after-hours, but that became a logistics nightmare for her bodyguards as well as Harrod's, so now she has someone call Harrod's with her "wish list" and the shop sends over items that might be of interest. She makes her selections, and then the unwanted items are sent back. This has been recorded in several more recent biographies written about the so-called "royals".

Gilly No no no. Here in Scandinavia to show the royals like this has been normal since the 70 ties. It's all wonderful. They are only humans as the rest of us. And it makes bond closer. The fact that she could, at a whim, order that the film should never be seen again illustrates just how much of a put up job it was. The job of the windsors is to be royal. If I had someone working for me I would want to be sure they were doing the job properly. I might not video them but I would certainly be examining what they did. Thanks for this. I have wondered why I've been seeing excerpts of this documentary but had never seen the whole thing. Usually I would have passively ended up viewing it as I assume it would have been shown every couple of years since as filler on TV. I have to admit I found it oddly confronting, seeing the Queen make eye contact with her children, buying them a chocolate bar and talking about life in general. I didn't expect it to be but it was. I think the Queen was on to something.

There were never plans to show this more than once. The year it showed The Queen decided not to do a Christmas broadcast, thinking that the public would have seen enough for one year.

I'm confused. In 1969 I was a toddler but I clearly remember watching a kind of "fly on the wall" documentary of the family. The one scene which I clearly remember was seeing the queen (I know NO capitals) taking Edward & Andrew into a corner shop (convenience store) & buying them each an ice cream, I'm guessing that it was on the Sandringham Estate...Maybe they made a shorter film of them later but if the queen said "No!"...that was it. I think we have reached a point where a monarchy is ridiculous.

Not sure how Smithsonian keeps this story up for five years since the biggest point it makes (and makes) was documentary was never shown again. But it WAS broadcast in 1977. Corrections never made.
