    Thank you for all your comments, I am grateful for everyone's response. Please bear with me as I answer all your interesting questions, there have been so many and in order to keep track I am not publishing comments until I can respond to them. Are there any subjects you would like me to focus on in future videos?

      Perhaps the Henry VII Lady Chapel at Westminster? Or the Chapel Royal at the Tower of London? (Unless you've already covered those.) Keep up the great work, and get some sleep, too!

    Thank you. I’ve wondered about this for a long time because of a story told to me by my late Mum and Dad. They were married in March 1954 and went to London on Honeymoon. One day they visited Windsor and in those days it was very quiet and not the tourist attraction it is now. When they were in St George’s Chapel there were no other visitors there and my Dad asked a gentleman (probably a Verger) where the King was buried and was told that he wasn’t, he was in the Vault and would stay there until the Queen Mother died. He then took my Dad down into the Vault (Mum stayed in the Chapel all on her own) and he was shown the Kings coffin. Dad always laughingly described it as “being left in a dusty old corridor” but it wasn’t until the death of Prince Philip last year that Mum and I realised where he had actually been taken and that this was a huge privilege as Dad had been allowed somewhere where the general public are not allowed to go. I always imagined it as just a plain old “corridor” as Dad had described it so it has been really interesting to find out more about the Royal Vault and it’s history.

    This poem is dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II may she rest in peace
    Queenie
    I love the Queen she was never horrible, never mean
    She was a wonderful head of state,
    with all the worlds problems on her plate, Like politicians destroying her country, upholding traditions and all their superstitions,
    She was assiduous to her duties, carried out with Grace and Beauty, she Devoted her life to the service of this Country,
    A dutiful wife, bringing life, bearing the sorrows of her nation!
    Regal and Sovereign, a Jewel in the Crown Of gods beautiful creation

    I couldn't imagine being buried in a vault. A person's resting place, no matter who they were in life, should be the ultimate momento mori. In a couple thousand years, no amount of embalming fluid, pressure and temperature monitored vaults or formaldehyde can reverse the fact that these vaults will be nothing more than a relic of a forgotten time, same with the Romans and Egyptians with their "marvelous" burial conditions.

      There is a spiral staircase near the altar that takes you down to the vault, Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor - I'm not sure of the present family go down. Windsor has long been a favoured residence of the royal family, it was George III's residence of choice towards the end of his life hence the construction of his vault. Prior to him only one king had chosen to be buried here, Edward IV, who began the construction of the present St George's chapel. For the Queen it was really the place she felt most at home.

    • @allanbarton

      Most likely, the entrance I believe is in the floor under a black stone that currently bears the name of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. So they will probably see the coffins of both of them as well as the Queen and Prince Philip. St George's chapel is the private chapel of the Queen and is part of the crown estate, it has its own endowments that support its maintenance.

    Hi, really appreciate your video about the royal vault, after years of holding coffin in the vault do they deteriorate and if so do they transfer body into new coffin?

      You probably saw in the video the coffins of Henry VIII and his wife Jane Seymour, the outer wooden casing rotted away after 500 years leaving only the inner lead coffin.

    I have a question. At this St George's Chapel is the Albert one on one side and the King George VI on the other?

      The Albert memorial chapel is at the east end behind the altar, George VI chapel is off to one side off the north aisle.

    When was the last monarch installed in Westminster Abbey? Assume it's full now?

    • @allanbarton
      @allanbarton  2 года назад +32

      Last king to be buried in Westminster was George II in 1760 - his vault is not totally full. The Queen's funeral was the first sovereign's funeral in the Abbey since then.

    Thanks so much for that. My brain was whirring with questions while watching the Queen’s coffin descending into the vault yesterday!

    Who buries Queen and prince Philip in the final resting place? Is royal family members or their heirs do present in burial site for the burial process?

      The royal family will be present and the Dean of Windsor who is in charge of the chapel will officiate at the service.

    Thanks so much. Whenever I watch anything to do with our wonderful culture, I’m always besieged with questions. So when watching Prince Phillips funeral I had questions as to what happpened next once the coffin descended. I assumed a crypt. But found it fascinating the history of the structure and its other inhabitants. And the added extra of finding Henry, Jane Seymore & Charles whilst renovating was amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    Why aren’t the kings and queens in the vault officially buried like the Queen will be?

      Please rephrase your question.

    • @allanbarton

      Sovereigns' funerals were much more private affairs than they are now - the Queen's funeral is the most public and ceremonially complex that we have ever seen. George III, George IV, and William IV lay in state and were buried in Windsor very much in private.

      @@docjackal8511 what I mean is there are kings and queens in the vault in coffins along with other members. Our current queen will be buried like her father and alongside Philip. Why aren’t the other members in the vault also buried like this?

    • @complexitysimplified6313
      @complexitysimplified6313 2 года назад

      @@04jorambo Just to clarify, our late Sovereign will not be buried in the conventional sense you and I understand (into soil). She like many royals before her, including the late Prince Philip, will be interred in the Royal Vault and on a 'shelf'. Her coffin made over 30-years ago, is lined with lead, to prevent moisture entering the coffin that could hasten decomposition of the body. This is why she was able to lie in state for many days in Westminster Hall without any noticeable smell.

      @@04jorambo good question… I think she means why isn’t there going to be a tomb for them given they were monarchs in their own right

    Great video. Thank you for an excellent coverage of the British Royal burial site. You've lifted the veil of the mistery. Love the satirical cartoon at the end.
