- The Coronation in 1953 appeared to be a glittering triumph for the House of Windsor. But behind the scenes there was a three-cornered story of jealousy and rivalry at the highest level.
On one side Prince Philip was at odds with the Queen Mother over his desire to modernise the monarchy. On the other the old Queen was jealous of her daughter's sudden rise to power. The Coronation was a critical year for the young Queen Elizabeth. She was preparing to undergo the most ancient and important royal ritual, but the two people closest to her, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip had very different ideas about how it should be handled. Philip, the dashing but dangerously modern consort, was anxious that the Coronation should not be simply a stuffy replay of previous reigns. He wanted 'some features relevant to the world today'. But he was fiercely resisted by the Queen Mother and by Princess Mary, who referred to Philip as 'the Hun'.
The new Queen was caught in the middle. In Coronation Coup, we learn that Mountbatten, who had engineered the marriage between Philip and Elizabeth wanted the family name changed to Windsor-Mountbatten after her accession. Also, while the new Queen largely sided with her mother over arrangements for the Coronation, she backed Philip over perhaps the most important decision to televise the ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. In doing so she set a precedent for television to be given access to the most intimate rituals.

Queen Bowes-Lyon was worse than a real royal. That she did not move out from the Buckingham Palace to give freedom to Prince Philip was despicable.
I always got the feeling that Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was jealous of her daughter’s reign. Obviously she was devastated by her husband’s death, as anyone would be, but I think another part of her was upset at no longer being the main woman in power and in the spotlight.
The irony of the Queen Mother being "anti German", and holding this against Prince Philip, as if he can help his ancestry, is laughable. The royal family, going by the surname Windsor, has German roots, and the name was only charged to Windsor in 1917. 🙄
This was all the more hilarious when you realize that the Queen Mother lived up to 102 years old (1900-2002). Can you imagine having to deal with your mother in law for that long. Poor man!
To lose your career, to be required to walk two steps behind your wife, and do it with good spirit, he was the epitome of a prince.
I’m so glad they televised The coronation. It was such an important moment in time, historical in fact. Great that we can glimpse this ceremony.
Prince Phillip was related to most of the royal houses of Europe. Queen Victoria was his ggggrandmother. Queen Louise of Sweden was his aunt. Empress Alexandra of Russia was his great aunt. Tsar Nicholas was his second cousin. Empress Alexandrovna of Russia was his great aunt. Queen Alexandra of England was his great aunt. King George V of England was his second cousin. King George I of Greece was his grandfather. Princess Marie Bonaparte was his aunt by marriage. Marquis of Milford-Haven was his uncle George. Lord Louis Mountbatten was his uncle. Princess Alice was his mother. And Prince Andrew of Greece his father. Most here were related by family blood. It's a wonder his blood didn't run absolute blue rather than red.
He was witty and handsome in his day.

I always sympathized with Prince Philip. The queen mother had been warmly welcomed into the Royal family but she didn't appear to extend that generosity to others coming into the family. That was my gut feeling.

The Queen motber wasn't royal herself at all (her parents were Scottish nobles) but Philip was Royal on both sides of his family- his mother was princess Alice of Battenburg and his father was prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.
Personally, I liked Prince Phillip. He was intelligent, hardworking, a devoted husband and father, and very handsome in his younger days.
