Loved this documentary! It beautifully captures the Queen Mother's legacy, charm, and strength over an entire century. Such an inspiring life and a lovely tribute to a royal icon
1:21:20 information is incorrect. The speaker quotes information published in a 1987 book on the Queen's Jewels which described in error the “Hanoverian tiara/necklace” made for Queen Adelaide in 1830 and not Queen Victoria who later inherited it in 1837. That tiara is a different from the fringe tiara that Princess Anne & the Queen wore to their weddings. The tiaras look almost similar but this wedding tiara was made by Queen Mary in 1919 as a more modern alternative to the Queen Adelaide tiara. Mary gifted it to the Queen mother in 1936 who bequeathed it to the Queen in 2002. Both tiaras are now in the royal vault,
Agree. Don't you love when we "common" people know History better then other's. I have corrected many Royal video's over time as I do my research plus I came first in History in High school. So DEEV, may I say, we rock!!! 😊
@@queenofcheap6310 . We do!!! However i now realise that the speaker quoted from Leslie Field's 1987 book which was the most up to date information available at the time this film was made. It wasn't until Hugh Roberts went digging through the Royal Archives for into to publish "The Queen's Diamonds" that we found out the provenance of these two very similar fringe tiaras.
Thank goodness the tiaras are safely locked up a new addition to the family misunderstood the tiara situation and caused a ruckus about an Emerald Tiara. I understood that the Queen Mother was in a bad financial state when she died. She had really overspent. We see another situation with battles between Princes over an American and maybe the outcome will be similar, who knows, settling their differences is unfortunately during a time of mourning for Prince Philip.
@@jeanross7430 We are told that the Queen Mother got seriously in the red when she placed a large portion of her cash assets into a Trust Fund for her great-grandchildren. After the removal of that money from her bank account, she did not cut back on staff, homes, or lifestyle and ran up a huge overdraft which was covered by her daughter and perhaps with help from Prince Charles. William, Harry, and all the great-grand children have benefited from the Trust. While the Queen Mother ended up cash poor, she was very asset rich. She bequeathed to the Queen her entire estate which included a Monet, a great deal of Faberge, a huge and very valuable jewellery collection (including the Boucheron emerald tiara worn by Eugenie at her wedding) , and enough antiques to fill a museum. The value of these far surpassed the debts Charles & the Queen paid off
Not very clever of this programs writer(s), theives stole someone else's words! Shows you how low civilization standards have fallen! Picked up a book.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as a great leader of Past and Present times. She provided inspiring leadership to UK and people of Common wealth Nations. She personified dignity and decency in public life, we can't forget the evening at Bunkingham Palace with her along with my family. It's Pained by her demise. Our thoughts are with the entire Royal family and people of UK and Common wealth Nations in this sad hour. May her soul be rest in Peace.
I don't remember her as a great leader but rather a cold lazy boring Woman Who Loved sitting in luxury and never once served the public. Rather they served her. She did not lead she merely followed orders. She did not even address the nation after Diana was killed. She was happy Diana was finally gone because Diana had caused her nothing but trouble. That's the reason she hit away .only when public outcry became so great did her advisers tell her she better say something otherwise risk pissing everybody off forever. She did not once acknowledge the amount of wealth and luxury she sat on, most of which had been looted and plundered from the Nations that were subject to British rule under colonialism. The millions of lives that were lost the millions of people who were subjugated were not acknowledged by her. The old saying never explain never complain meant that she could sit there saying nothing, giving an address every year at Christmas talking to the people about poverty while she sat in front of a gold piano. What a hypocrite. Who exactly did she serve and how? Everyone served HER. She never went without or demonstrated her greatness by donating even temporarily, her land for common use. Of her vast amount of houses which could have helped the unemployed to foster new work schemes or farming schemes. Nope, she never one goy ut of her chauffer driven life to lead her subjects.
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was probably the best thing that happened to the house of Windsor for a period of about 75 years. Although reluctant to marry Prince Albert at first, she of course eventually did. Being smarter than most of the Windsors then close to the throne, and tough as an old boot as well, she infused the family with political savvy and iron resolve. She and George VI served as a tower of strength for the British people during WW2. To suggest however that she was not a strong political force within the royal family is ludicrous. It's quite clear she ruled the roost, having things done her way from the moment her husband became George Vi. She was in many ways a hearty bonne-vivante noted for her fondness of gin, and the odd naughty joke. She was well loved by the British people for the most part. Politically she may not always been right but she was always Queen Elizabeth.
It occurs to me that I was born in 1947 when Queen Elizabeth got married and she and Phillip were on the same generation as my parents. Parents in that time were more traditional in raising their children... not quite as emotionally giving to their children and stricter. Not that they didn’t love their children, just parental ways were different.
@@toocuteforwords9976 It was fear. I got beaten up and down the back of my whole naked body (but mostly my rear end) with a leather belt for making what these days would be considered very minor incorrectnesses, because I didn't know better. Nowadays a calm explanation of why we don't do or say things like that usually suffices on the first attempt. I had a great mom who made sacrifices (you might not even bekieve if I mentioned a few) to keep and raise me on her own, but that was the way she was taught "discipline". All the while it was happening I promised myself that I would never raise my hand to a child, and I never did. But yeah, it was fear.
I worked the platinum jubilee as a sound engineer for the show at cardiff castle. Met Prince William and Kate. I’m not a big fan of the monarchy but surprised how frustrated I am with some of the comments and posts about the queen mocking her death.
Just remember how the "royals" got there. Hardly people worth looking uptoo although I agree mocking the dead is immature, I wouldn't get frustrated on behalf of them.
Completely agree. It's disgusting how low some people are and feel they are entitled to make such comments when you, I and everyone else knows those who are most scathing in their judgments have the ugliest as well as the most skeletons in their closets
I wrote a letter to Princess Diana in 1994, and received a letter back from a lady-in-waiting. "The Princess of Wales has asked me to thank you for your letter. Your thoughtful words are very much appreciated." It ended with best wishes... I was surprised. I had not expected an answer.
Interesting and informative. The thing I had no idea of, and this is coming from an American, I had no idea the the Queen Mother allowed Prince (then and no King) Charles and Parker-Bowles to carry on their affair in one of her homes. That seems so scandalous. I enjoyed the clips of the wedding dresses and the jewelry most of all. I do believe Princess Diana's dress was the poofest, and grandest dress of all. Diana seemed as thought she was hiding in it. Perhaps she was. Thank you for the documentery.
I found it odd that the Queen Mother was so particular about her outfits, dresses, jewelry, and hats, as a fashion perfectionist , but her teeth were absolutely appalling in every photograph and video made within the last twenty five to thirty years before her death. Her teeth were yellowed, with black ends and it appeared as if her teeth were rotting in her mouth. Surely, she could have afforded dentistry to clean and repair her teeth , or to remove them and give her teeth implants, if she didn't want dentures.
I wondered about that as well. Apparently the Royals will have nothing to do with plastic surgery….maybe she thought aesthetic tooth repair was a similar no-no? The other issue is that she drank a fair amount of red wine….which can stain one’s teeth badly.
She had BRITISH teeth! And she was proud of them. It's only fairly recently the Brits en-mass have started doing cosmetic improvements to their choppers. Sadly nowadays most of them cannot afford to visit a dentist, so their teeth are slowly going in back in time. The Health Service hardly works at all in some areas, and they are so done down as a nation, they cannot afford private.
They are very simply British teeth. The royals have never been big fans of cosmetic surgeries until about 20-30 years ago when the younger princesses married into the family. The mostly just wore makeup to enhance their natural beauty. But if I remember right Princess Katherine spent upwards of 12K by visiting a hugely popular French dentist who has mastered applying braces/straightening out the teeth from behind so there are no visible “train tracks”. The results apparently produce a perfect smile but still retain the British qualities… quite interesting
@@Apollo_Blaze During Britain’s Colonial reign over India Queen Victoria was made Empress. As her descendants were crowned they inherited the titles Emperor & Empress, along with other titles. I didn’t realize she was considered Empress after 1947 when India took back independence.
Well she wasn't really the Empress of India. The English were invaders, who sucked the wealth out of India, and when they were through with raiding it, they got kicked out by Ghandi, leaving India a billion pounds in debt, which impoverished India for generations after, as that was an unheard of sum back in those times. With that money they financed their war against farmers in South Africa, as they tried to take over SA, to suck the wealth out of it too (gold, diamonds and minerals) but they lost - even though they invented the first concentration camps where hundred of thousands of farmers and their families perished via disease and starvation. The invaders self-styled themselves overloads of Indian royalty, but they were not accepted as such by the Indian people. It was such hypocrisy. All that glitters is not gold, and behind every great family is a crime. Or two.
"Standing back and never interfering"?! She was opposed to Philip marrying Elizabeth: she and her pal, Diana's grandmother, were the ones to engineer the marriage of Charles.
Thus her disappointment at the behaviour of Charles & Diana. She had hoped that marriage would be as successful as her own. It's likely she was unaware of the adulterous horseface her grandson had been involved w/for years.
Our dear grandmother served tea to H.M. The Queen at the legendary Cammell Laird shipyard amidst the launch of the H.M.S. Ark Royal in 1950, Birkenhead since suffering managed economic decline despite being more populous than the city of Cambridge and most certainly had its fine share of skilled workers whilst at least 5 of the University of Cambridges graduates sold out Great Britain.
There is a little known reason why she wore such loose clothes - she had had part of the large bowel removed (for a precancerous condition) and was left with a colostomy - the flowing dresses masked the colostomy bag. Another little known fact is that she had both her daughters (Elizabeth and Margaret) via Caesarian section - that is why there were no more children, as Caesarean sections were dangerous, and could only be performed twice in delivery. The Duke of Windsor had 7 names!!!
Virginia Fry: They wore loose clothing to hide the fact that they were men dressing and pretending to be women. This is still going on today in all aspects of our world. The queen is not a woman. These men were never pregnant and those are not their children.

The QM once said, “I am not as nice as people think I am,” and she wasn’t. She was absolutely fit to be tied after QEII ascended to the throne and flatly refused to leave Buckingham Palace. She was so financially extravagant that QEII spent millions of her own money to cover the debts her mother rang up. The worst thing is that the QM deliberately drove a wedge between a very young Charles and his mother, taking advantage of the long State visits QEII was forced to make to spoil him and make much too much of him, which is why they were always so close. And why Charles felt abandoned by his mother.

I doubt very much that Queen Victoria had the Hanoverian Tiara made to order in 1830, seeing as she wasn't yet queen in 1830 and was a sheltered young girl of mere 11 years of age
@@Mrsttowner They did indeed say that. Go back and watch it yourself! I am not a Royalist to start with, but I have watched several documentaries about the Queen Mother, and they all portray her as the perfect wife and Queen in public, but behind close doors she was quite a nasty lady. I wonder why the current Queen forced her out of Buckingham Palace ?
She’s a married woman with a family of her own. Like someone else said, that stated with Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria needed her mother out of the home as she didn’t trust her and she wanted herself and Albert to not have her breathing down their shoulder and openly questioning their decisions.

Queen mother was NEVER surprised about Margaret and Peter Townsend.
Alexandra's resemblance to Diana is striking.
They weren't related and were nothing alike
It occurs to me that I was born in 1947 when Queen Elizabeth got married and she and Phillip were on the same generation as my parents. Parents in that time were more traditional in raising their children... not quite as emotionally giving to their children and stricter. Not that they didn’t love their children, just parental ways were different.
Children had much more respect for their elders back then .
@@toocuteforwords9976 I don’t know if that was “respect” or FEAR…..🙈
It is a golden age to be a child in a home where they're loved and cared for.
They didn't entitle children back then.
I worked the platinum jubilee as a sound engineer for the show at cardiff castle. Met Prince William and Kate.

As old as she was, I wonder if she wasn't just afraid of dentists. Even now, people still won't go to dentists because of the fear pf pain.
Wauw...
Fun Fact: the Queen mother was the last official Empress of India. Crazy that the last Empress of India died in 2002.
Who cares?
Why was any Empress of India not an Indian woman?
Murderous, thieving parasites.

Another little known fact is that she had both her daughters (Elizabeth and Margaret) via Caesarian section - that is why there were no more children, as Caesarean sections were dangerous, and could only be performed twice in delivery.
