I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields. I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible. I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes. Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. Thanks for your work.
@@greenwave819 I went back to spot where I left. haha I was hungry for pizza and I was not to be denied. So, you can say; I got to what watch the show and eat my pizza too.
Schama is awful, as is most history on TV, as is most history in schools. "I know, let's do a series on...the Tudors! And, as always, avoid any viewpoint of what life was like for ordinary people or any criticism of the English establishment. We'll just talk about the royals and their battles and what clothes they wore."
it's 3 1/2 hrs because he spends ages speaking realllyyyy slowwwllllyyy on details that are barely relevant, and then repeating them. i don't need to hear every little minor detail on whether or not it was a comet or a volcano, the locations of all the worlds volcanoes, the every effect of plague. if i wanted a doco on that, i would've searched for that.
@@NathanCassidy721 that makes no sense? i'm commenting to express my frustration, and hopefully warn others. i got 40 mins in and he hadn't even gotten close to talking about post-romano british history. i don't care about justinian and the plague, i've heard it 1000x already.. i don't mind if he quickly presents it to build the base, but not when he drones on about it endlessly when the doco is advertised to be about something else.

Thank you for this brilliant documentary. I am a South African with Dutch and French ancestry and my children through their father from British descent. This. Was. FANTASTIC. You took one of the most difficult periods in western history - one where historians know so little - and made a THREE HOUR documentary out of it. You taught me *everything*. I seriously barely knew *any* of this - and I spent a huge part of my history major on emphasizing in Medieval Studies. I took at least one course on Britain in Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages, attended countless lectures, and read who knows how many books, and you blinded me with an entire course (or more) of material that was entirely new to me. What you set out to do with this documentary was a superhuman effort, and you did it with flawless style.
Truly an accomplishment. He's long since earned my subscription. Unfortunately what passes for higher education here is far less comprehensive than many degree holders would like to admit. Never stop learning! Best of luck with your career!

This has been one of my favorite periods in history for years. It's also one of the hardest to get good information on. This is an amazing production. Thank you for all of the work that went into producing this.
Ancient India talks of different ages of "virtue" for humans. The dark ages is the lowest age, the middle of the Kala Yuga, as we've seen, was very brutal and materialistic. We recently entered the age of Energy, the Dwapara Yuga, around the 1900's I think. Just throwing that out there.

Top quality RUclips content like this does not come along often. As a long-time anglophile and amateur historian of same, it's hard to know what to say except that I enjoyed this immensely, and yes, thank you for such an exceptional documentary!
I sit here a humble American (inorite), but have returned to this specific documentary a dozen times since it came out. The mythos, the presentation, the era, the wonder, the speculation, the imagining, the simple truth that entire worlds (however small) can be lost or altered by the stroke of a pen is somewhat maddening & riveting. It teeters on defiance of the imagination. Yet there so equally defiant stand the ruins and records. I'd shake your hand and buy a sturdy round on your part, if ever we met. This is top tier storytelling on behalf of humanity. Thank you for what you do.
It’s taken me several weeks to get through this as I’ve wanted to really take it in. It’s been immense. Your story telling in this and your other videos has provided me with lot knowledge and love of the “dark ages” than any other source. This should be used to teach British history in educational settings all around the world. Thankyou
@Orbán Viktor Mihály There is so much history that most will never hear of or understand. I thought the Dark Ages were called such because there weren't many historians and not much was known. Knowing now that it was literally dark for generations because of whatever nature threw at the human race; volcanoes, meteors, plagues and incomprehensible weather conditions. This is an amazing body of work. I'm delighted to know more of the land where I was born in post-war Britain at Burderop Park R.A.F., Swindon. Growing up in West Texas I learned the history of these lands and not much besides the history of the European settlers. Not much of the history of those peoples that came here and made a new civilization. Thank you for the knowledge. I understand a little more of the ancients and what is left of those early Christian cultures.
@@okcquilter The presentation is very hyperbolic and sensationalized. You wouldn't get that impression from reading the historians writing at the time, except for specific wars or sieges, or the plague of 541 for instance. Modern historians don't call it dark ages.

Thank you from a one-time Medieval History student at university. I enjoyed the blending of scenery, archaeology, old texts, and the annals of the kings and kingdoms that came and went. Having read Bede, and being familiar with the expansion and uniting of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, it was good to hear the contemporary British, Pictish, and Irish/Scottish history -- where the ebbs and flows of the north -- and intermarriages between Celtic and Anglian dynasties -- mirror what happened in the south ... where you get, for example, a "West Saxon" leader with the curiously Welsh-like name of Caedwealla. It is interesting that the Northumbrian nobility, just before Bede's time, included people like Cedd and Chad (who became prominent bishops and saints) -- whose names are Celtic, not Germanic. This seems to indicate some serious intermixing of Celts and Anglo-Saxons, even at the highest levels of society. The Angles' language -- with a fair dose of Norse influence -- won out culturally, but that does not mean that every Celtic inhabitant had been replaced by an Anglo-Saxon immigrant. Britain reflects *many* successive waves of influence, and the history you relate is as much the heritage of modern Britain as the history of the Anglo-Saxons (as interesting as that is too).
I love it. Never moved from my phone to see everything. I lived in England and my husband and my son were born there. I miss my husband and the beauty of his country. You made my day so pleasant. Thank you so 🙏 so much.

It is fascinating to me how these wars for Britain started in earnest with the new, germanic people arriving at its shores from modern day Netherlands, northwestern Germany and Denmark, essentially as raiders and refugees before the Franks and the Danes, only for the similar pattern to, sort of be repeated a mere century or so after the situation had somewhat calmed down. 793. these same Danes who in a way pushed the Jutes and the Angles from the Jutland peninsula arrive to Lindisfarne and the wars for Britain start again. Our histories are so intertwined!

I adore Schama's history, but this is a welcome treat.
I am ashamed to say, I went out got pizza and still had plenty of show left to watch.

Where are you from originally if I may ask?

Very good example of clarity and brevity...

A comprehensive look at the most mysterious period in british history since Julius Caesar paid us a visit... it's great to see information i've only previously read snippets of in books or novels get a coherent chronogical narrative along with loads of things i'd not heard before - great stuff! Much Appreciated...
YES YES YESSS
Kind of strange how this history isn’t more widely known among Brits eh. Almost as if our history is purposely shrouded for some reason..
@@complexunity4533 To be fair there's not a lot of it known, and a lot of what we do know has only come to light or been corroborated over the past few decades. But you're right, this stuff should be taught more, it's absolutely fascinating.
@@complexunity4533 Used to be taught more but the education system was being changed through the late 60s and through the 70s.
My History and English teachers were both fascinated by this period.
It was through them I started to read Tolkien etc

My god, I thought this was like a History Channel special until I saw the time of the video. For you to do this all by yourself, extremely impressive. Definitly deserves the 11,926,020 +1 views it has amassed within one year. Well done!
Brilliant documentary, well written and narrated, not a period of history I knew much about. Loved the editing too with aerial footage. Great to see you have 1 million subscribers . Well earned , many thanks
An obvious labor of love. Fascinating and very well done. Thank you for your efforts.
3 AND A HALF HOUR LONG FREE DOCUMENTARY!? 🤯
History Time you have once again provided a great service by producing and releasing this!
You’ve outdone yourself - I’ve told more people about History Time than I can count (I work part time in a book store and various topics come up all the time with customers) and HT should be much better known! Your work, narration, editing, choice of material, presentation both visually and content, is superb! I’m a history wonk so HT is catnip for me, this is surely one of the best, bravo!!!!
DA
Simply amazing!! This is 3 and a half hours long but it sure doesn't feel like it...I've just watched all of it in one sitting and was left wanting more! Moreover, as I write this it is 4 am in Denmark and I started the documentary after midnight, thinking I would see the first 40 minutes, perhaps an hour before I fell asleep. Instead it literally kept me awake the whole night long! The topnotch quality never dropped once, the pace never once missed a beat and the time flew by.
Truly well done!!
Ps.
Fascinating. Riveting. Educational. Breathtaking. Thank you does not do justice to your superb content. Thank you thank you thank you ❤
Get this man a netflix contract! Thankyou for all your effort, its a joy to watch
I randomly stumbled across this documentary this morning. I have to say, every aspect of this piece of work is just stellar. Honestly, your work on this one, has outdone any pro-level documentary I've watched.
Same today I just came across this by random accident and found it absolutely amazing...and shall be watching more of this stuff..
I've been a history buff since High School. Your videos are outstanding. I love the narration with your steady flow and volume. The filming is fabulous. Much appreciation your every effort and high standard of excellence! Wishing you much success with your current project. God Bless!
Qllmalpn,1,
When we watched this masterfully put together video we were not surprised that you have once again produced an intelligent, articulate and thoroughly researched history lesson. Your love for history always shines through. Thanx for the upload.
You really are amazing mate, making this content for free, 3 years in the making!
"in Ireland things were still notably bad"
Pretty much a summary of Irish history
Sadly
I didnt know why ulster hated everyone else until i watched some of these videos then this one other one, on great british castles. I dont condone crime but i feel like some of the people in ulster are justified what ireland has went through is horrible.
Show love to Ireland. Ireland has contributed a lot. A lot of Britons industry wouldn't have happened without the Irish. And when England was so ugly to Irish people, some of them moved to the US, where their offspring created space programs and invented luner landing moduels. Ireland is a good place.
👍👍👍👍👍
@@Hollylivengood irish immigrants brought Halloween to USA. Good enough for me
This is maybe the 5th or 6th time I’ve watched this particular episode. Absolutely love the content! Some of the most comprehensive historical documentaries I’ve ever seen. Adding the fact that you’re doing this entirely independently is truly remarkable; wholly deserving of praise for your hard work and dedication. You are clearly a gifted individual and whether this comment is ever seen or not, I wish to extend my personal thanks for making this accessible; entirely free. To those of us who are fascinated by history and interested in learning it is itself quite a generous gift. 🍻
Well said!
Yep I agree. It would not get any better than this and is free for the public! Like all education should be. Thanks.
Totally agree, I love history, and it is fabulous to get access to such amazing content.
nobody will ever see this comment, but i absolutely agree on all points.
Thanks for posting this very interesting work. Watched it twice, back to back. I appreciate your frequent labels reminding us of the names, affiliation, and era of the people under discussion. The Romans were an amazing, practical, and efficient civilization, and yet faded and ended. We take our civilizations for granted, when in reality we are only a single disaster away from much more primitive and less ordered lives.
You are the best history teacher I've ever seen! Also your documentaries are much better then most TV productions. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing all that you do with us!!

14m views in less than a year, not sure how many times ive watched this but its near on perfection....
Three and a half hours of Pete talking about post-Roman Britain. Yep, this will be epic!
35 minutes in and haven't heard much British history
From the Netherlands (Friesland) and soooo impressed by your hard work. It kept me up at night, got me sitting on the toilet far too long and held me from doing my chores...please more like this!! 😍😍
This was very interesting and quite a lot of serious work! Thanks for all your work!
Three years to produce this were absolutely worth your time and the viewers'...a praise from a Northern Italian buff of British ancient and medieval history. A real in depth look on a very obscure yet fascinating era that is seldom found in these day of superficial knowledge and fast food education....Bravo!
Ancient British history is kind of bound up with
Italian (Roman) history as well.
You’ve outdone yourself with this one. This has to be one of the finest historical narratives that I’ve had the pleasure of watching on this platform.
Truly exceptional :)
Thank you for doing doing your part to keep history alive.
Love that you're covering this period in more detail, I've just finished my dissertation on the Roman Impact on pre-Norman Wales, so I'm excited to watch!
A fascinating topic
Great work,i visit many places in UK and Ireland .I enjoy your work,it's really good . Thank you!!!
Very nicely done!! I enjoyed it very much. The fact that you spent 3 years just for us to watch for free just shows how hardworking you are!
Pete, you've outdone yourself. This is an extraordinary work and comprehensive. I don't think I have read 100 books in my life. Incredible.
Your channel is a work of art. And it really helps me relax and get out of my head in times of deep anxiety and depression, so thank you for that as well.
This is a great video. I’ve watched it and listened a few times. It never gets old. I always learn something new… I love everything about it -
historical information the maps and visual aids, the delivery voice and of course, the music that accompanies please keep up the great work!
