@wonderfalg I don't count that. You can't call something Rome if they don't have Rome. They have been a part of the Roman Empire before, but they diverged when it fell
Just imagine if there wasn't all the internal backstabbing/treachery within the Roman state, how much longer the Roman Empire would have lasted? One can make the sound argument that "the fall of Rome" was not from any external enemy, but rather from the enemies from within... As duscussed in this video, even in Rome's collapsed state/end times, there were still chances to repair it yet internal treachery prevented it. In my opinion of civilizations and their collapse, it's more often due to "the fall from within" rather than any one great seige or battle. Most are wrongly taught and or have the impression of the later. Rome did not fall when the Visagoths and Vandals sacked the city, Rome fell internally long before those events. To further put into perspective, the exact same thing is happening today in Europe and especially in USA. History my friends does repeat itself because "history" is the psychology and repeatative actions of man.
There's a guy that lives a few blocks down from me and he apparently he is a very good bread maker, but he has a bakery and his bread is often compared to some of the best bread that there is around because he makes his bread in the old fashioned that still appeals to people. He is often called the last Roman. All joking aside, this documentary is amazing

Not because you're work isn't top notch, rather your vids are massive the work involved is insane. And selfishly I want more content. 😂
It’s a common bias that the eastern Roman Empire declined for 1000 years when it was actually expanding in many periods and contracting in others. By 1025 they were the most powerful state in Europe and the near east, giving even the Muslims a run for their money. It’s a western bias.
I still think Rome fell on the day Diocletian moved the military to the East and carved up the Empire into 4 during the crisis of the 3rd century. Galerius taxed the city of Rome after Diocletian promised the City of Rome that it would never be taxed. That exact moment in time shows that Rome was a new entity. I think Rome fell long before 476 and 1453.
212 CE to be exact. That is when Caracalla gave the right of Vir (Old Latin man) to the eastern provincials. That was the end of the Greco-Roman empire and began the Christian version which was much more chaotic and unstable.
If Rome wasn't the largest empire that the world had ever seen, it certainly was the longest lived empire that the world had ever seen. Rome didn't fall in 410 A.D., following the Visigoths invasion. All that happened was that the Roman Empire simply relocated east, to Byzantium, to Constantinople. The Roman Empire simply carried on, for almost another thousand years. The Roman Empire didn't fall until Mehmet II lay siege to Constantinople in 1453.
Great doc. Found myself getting emotional at points because what many of these last Romans had was courage, a sense of duty and honor. To sacrifice yourself for your country says a lot about your character.
Thank you for pointing out the fallacy of Voltaire’s statement about the Holy Roman Empire; the institution of the emperor and concept of universal imperium meant that the emperor was viewed with great reverence as once of the most powerful monarchs in the world. This was true even by the time of Voltaire, by which point, as he so crudely points out, the empire had become quite disunited - even at that stage the Habsburg Holy Roman emperors held enormous sway over international geopolitics, even if beginning their long, slow decline which ended in their deposition in 1918.
Especially the early Ottonian period marks a high water mark in the Power of the Holy Roman Empire and the Emperors Power at the time in Western Europe which is often overlooked.
Actually, Sponsianus (Sponsian in Eng. sources) was the last person to be discovered and added to the list of known Roman emperors. So he, too, deserves to be called the last Roman. 😅
The history of the old Roman Empire and how and why it fell is a reminder that nothing last forever, Pete and his YT channel is the time machine to learn why all this happened.
I love that the Roman Empire kept going during the middles ages in the form of the Eastern Roman/Byzantine empire but I really wish the Holy Western Roman Empire fully re-secured the west and that they cooperated with the East
hre is not even close to roman , the territories of hre wasnt even Roman when wester roman empire existed , they a re barbarians like ottomans who wanted to be romans

Great overview in general and extremely entertaining, but I'm surprised Gemistos Plethon was not on this list. Surely he's a claimant to the title "last of the Romans" as he was the last great philosopher of the Greco-Roman tradition? Really see his writings and ideas as an important (arguably the most important) bridge between the Eastern Roman world and the Renaissance. He's very worthy of the title "last of the Romans".
I wonder how the demise of Rome could have been slowed or even stopped if the expansive ambition to conquer the west stopped at the mountain ranges that border Italy. Would the Germanic people, Gauls, Huns, Visacoths etc have bothered to cross them? If Rome had stayed within their natural geographical boundaries, would it have survived?
Great job Pete! Great to hear you have an editing relationship with Damiano now, it was a terrific show! Looking forward to watching more history productions!
It should be noted that the conquered Romans of the Ottoman Empire were and still are deemed the Rum Millet, the Roman Nation and the language they speak is still sometimes referred as Romaiki, not Helleniki, the official language of this minority in Constantinople, Istanbul. There are thus still Romans. The Ottomans also took on the title of Emperor of the Romans and the (tenth) Ecumenical Synod of 1484 was under their aegis, taking place in Constantinople and confirming the Western Latins as heretics, condemning the Robber Council of Florence-Ferrara of 1438-9 including confirming the 879 condemnation of the Filioque clause in the Creed at the 8th Ecumenical Council, also held in Constantinople. It is well known that many Turks remain crypto-Orthodox and have, literally, underground catacomb services until this day and are (Eastern) Romans. I have met one. Her father was then the Turkish ambassador to Kazakhstan. She revealed this when I brought the subject up in a conversation. The fact that this was designated, in 1484, an Ecumenical Synod, simply means that the Ottoman Sultan of the day was one of the crypto-Orthodox and in fact a Roman Empire in every sense. The last Ottoman Sultan was deposed in 1924 though there remain claimants to this day. We have not yet had, therefore, the last Roman, though we are now back in a Republican era. And that´s before consideration of the Third Rome, Moscow and Muscovy, which overlaps and which has claimants to its throne vacant since 1917. The Russian Republic embraces the idea of being the Third Rome, as is shown in its emblems and insignia. The Vatican City also claims to be a continuously Roman territory with the Gregorian University still using Latin as the language of instruction, and most of its territory is still situated in Rome. The last Roman and last Roman ruler are both yet to come, therefore, whichever way you want to cut it.
Pete, thank you so much for a complete view of the totality of the Roman Empire and how it played out after the fall of the Western and ultimately Eastern in it's former territories as new empires rose after it.
To Constantine XI, who invoked the last Roman army to proved themselves equal to the legacy of Caesar and Alexander, that with Christ looking they will face death bravely against the insurmountable heathen hordes. Roma Invicta 1453 AD

If anyone's particularly interested in the subject I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series, in particular the Late Antiquity and Migration Era playlist. @wonderfalg I don't count that. You can't call something Rome if they don't have Rome. They have been a part of the Roman Empire before, but they diverged when it fell
@@ThomasGazis There is no such thing as """Byzantine empire""", that's the real false narrative. It was still Rome.
Pete Kelly Rocks! The most enjoyable part is his enthusiasm and dedication. The content is amazing as well.
Humans don't seem to learn from the past do they😢
Rome fell in 1453
Badly managed economy is the downfall of many empires.
Absolutely correct
There's a guy that lives a few blocks down from me and he apparently he is a very good bread maker, but he has a bakery and his bread is often compared to some of the best bread that there is around because he makes his bread in the old fashioned that still appeals to people. He is often called the last Roman. All joking aside, this documentary is amazing
Editing is great and im glad you were able to lighten your own workload with outsourcing it to someone else. Im looking forward to the increase of content. 🎉
Probably needs a team/collaboration to compete with the Paul Cooper productions over there at _Fall of Civilizations_ juggernaut.
A brilliant ancient history documentary that makes the past come alive. Truly an enlightening experience.
Me and your video editor have the same last name, I was shocked to hear it out loud it’s rather uncommon. Great video!
Wow I'm surprised it's taken you so long to get an editor. You vids are massive, a researcher or two would probably be useful on some of the obscure/specific episodes (thinking local expert, or someone digging through the archives). Not because you're work isn't top notch, rather your vids are massive the work involved is insane. And selfishly I want more content. 😂
Hi I just wanted to say that you have a great voice that is perfect for telling history!! Your voice makes history very interesting indeed 💪👌👏🙌🙏👍🎉
So long as an emperor ruled in Constantinople the Roman state was a flickering candle of greatness in an increasingly dark world
In the fall of Constantinopla, many intelectuals went to Venice, leading the renasence.
@raultalmon1467 I don't know if they led but certainly the treasure trove of classical books and works helped drive the Renaissance onwards
It’s a common bias that the eastern Roman Empire declined for 1000 years when it was actually expanding in many periods and contracting in others. By 1025 they were the most powerful state in Europe and the near east, giving even the Muslims a run for their money. It’s a western bias.
I love your channel and content. Such a good listen while working. Ive been subbed a long time and really appreciate your hard work. THANK YOU!
Gonna make my girl watch this after asking me how often I think about it!
What is up w that I’ve been hearin that a lot
Something on tiktok l think.last week the wife filmed me and asked how many times a month l think of the roman empire. I went a low 4 times.
Its aint over until its over
1453 is the end
212 CE to be exact. That is when Caracalla gave the right of Vir (Old Latin man) to the eastern provincials. That was the end of the Greco-Roman empire and began the Christian version which was much more chaotic and unstable.
You do excellent justice to history, Pete. Love and respect that a lot. Thank you!
Why does the last Roman have to be a famous person? It was probably just some ordinary old man who died in the 1500s.
SUBBED Neat to see the face behind that Epic Voice! Ive always really enjoyed your style of story telling. Very well done!
Great doc. Found myself getting emotional at points because what many of these last Romans had was courage, a sense of duty and honor. To sacrifice yourself for your country says a lot about your character.
I unabashedly and proudly think about Ancient Rome every day. Roma Aeterna!!
I do as well
Urbs Aeterna!! Greatest city on Earth.
Love this. thanks! so interesting
1918? Please explain genuine interest
@@benhudson4014 the last Habsburg emperor, Karl I, was deposed in the fall of 1918
@@TheLocalLtyeah right, the habsurgs emperors of Rome, lol
Pete and company are going to double the output of History Time videos? OK, yeah sure, sounds good. What am I saying? Not just yes...but Hell Yes!

A state that lasted 2,000+ years, from the 7th century BC to the 15th century AD.
Roma aeterna ❤️
Imagine how short lived if inflation had sent home prices soaring 50-100x over in less than a century.
Still alive today. Look at american currency. One dollar bill and quarter
Actually, Sponsianus (Sponsian in Eng. sources) was the last person to be discovered and added to the list of known Roman emperors. So he, too, deserves to be called the last Roman. 😅
The history of the old Roman
Empire and how and why it fell is a reminder that nothing last forever, Pete and his YT channel is the time machine to learn why all this happened.
I love that the Roman Empire kept going during the middles ages in the form of the Eastern Roman/Byzantine empire but I really wish the Holy Western Roman Empire fully re-secured the west and that they cooperated with the East
The HRE was the east mess of the frankish empire
hre is not even close to roman , the territories of hre wasnt even Roman when wester roman empire existed , they a re barbarians like ottomans who wanted to be romans
@@chrisfrapmost of the southern hre was formerly Roman
Much of the blame goes towards Christianity and it’s divisions, probably most of the blame goes to Catholics.
Yaaay! A new video on the best YT channel ever. Doesn't matter what period of time or what geographic region it is about - it's a must-see
History time is my favorite time 😊
Thank you channel for sharing interesting and interesting historical information
Very well done! 👏 Thanks, Pete. 👊😎
Superb, clear, concise, and eminently accessible. One to watch or add to your saved list.
Congratulations on the monetization. You create amazing content and deserve to be paid for it.
Hello from Tokyo. :)
I would love to see a video from you based on the history of Japan. There are many videos about Japanese war history but it might be worth focusing on a different aspect of the history here.
Love ancient times, very well put together ❤
Thanks Peter! I appreciate your hard work, your content is top quality as always ❤
I've had relationships where it seemed as if it took a thousand years for them to end
I love History ❤️
This guy has a great delivery.
Why is Pete dressed like he's in the witness protection program?

Can't believe the last pagan emperor wasn't with in the video :( Julian the Philosopher!
Julian is one of my favourite emperors. He’ll get an entire video eventually.
Thank you for this most detailed yet thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining video. Great job!!
Pete, thank you so much for a complete view of the totality of the Roman Empire and how it played out after the fall of the Western and ultimately Eastern in it's former territories as new empires rose after it.
Editing help is great, as long as you still do the narration 😊 - the voice makes it even better to watch…downright smooth

Awesome! All your videos are so well done, and you have a great, soothing, low tone voice. Perfect for narration, or just sitting down for a chat. You are a beautiful person. Thank you for all your hard work, education, and dedication.
If anyone's particularly interested in the subject I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series, in particular the Late Antiquity and Migration Era playlist. That's A LOT of deep stuff and terribly insightful analysis of every single political, military and social factor in literally hundreds of videos, often segmented according to region, century, etc. It's all a much more complex thing than usually depicted but this channel seems to me the one that makes sense of it the best way.
He is excellent. Almost TOO prolific, though. I subscribed to his account and was inundated by a near daily hour+ video, I have no idea how he maintains that level of output.
Obvious intentional plug. Probably from dudes own alt account.
@saintjacques8137 it's pretty shitty to come to a channel and simply direct the audience elsewhere. I have seen your comments on other videos saying the same shit. If the owner of this channel wanted to provide a plug, they would. If people are interested in this subject and want more content, they will find it. Shame
@@Bambam-sz6id🙏
@@Bambam-sz6id I can assure you gentlemen that I am not an alt for Schwerpunkt, given that I clearly stated that he produces too much for me. I turned off the ringing bell icon for his account.
I quite prefer Pete Kelly - however, I don't see why someone saying 'also, if you are interested there is another account that produces cool things' is a problem.
I’m so happy for your success! Thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
Given how frequently us men spend time thinking about the Roman Empire, it's a wonder that we have any time to watch a documentary about it.
Magnificent documentary. There are several good resources on Rome on RUclips but this one is one of the best.
In many many ways, I get the idea that Rome only morphed and mutated. But it's still around.
Like most empires
Yes! It’s called Roman Catholicism, the stellar remnant of Rome’s rejection of Aristotle for Plato.
A long video about a historical topic, with proper human narration and music, with still photos, graphics and dramatised scenes 👍👏👌
I'm new/new-ish to the channel, having seen either a community post or having come across a video in the next suggested video so we sort of have to thank RUclips for this. But knowing that this video was initially demonetised meant that someone either carelessly clicked a button or just thought it was just a simple war video with lots of gore and violence so definitely no thanks to RUclips. Highly unfair to those who rely on RUclips for income and having their videos be pushed less by the algorithm and having less exposure
Back to watching!
Saxons! They were the real Dark Age badasses….Nobody had better helmets or martial decor during their time…best governance ideas too, Not keen on the Christian conversion but it was a trend back then so part of their era inguess
