      They DID not! She acquiesced to intrusive cameras following the family in a very, very short lived type of reality show/actually, documentary. It's SAID that the complete documentary was only SHOWN ONCE in the UK, on TV, was an enormous hit, yet pulled and allegedly destroyed (Guess not). It was also shown ONCE in America
      The Queen, who originally agreed to film their allegedly real up close and unprecedentedly personal lives, ONLY in an effort to seem more modern, thought the finished product documentary was way TOO revealing, with all the personal thoughts, moments and feelings SHOWN, and BANNED it from EVER being wholly shown on TV again.

    'Keeping Up With the Windsors'; their early version of reality TV haha. This is quite an eye opener, seeing them at a glimpse in their 'normal' family life. They actually don't come off that bad, and seem almost natural. I'm not much of a royalist but Queen Elizabeth was a charismatic and good looking woman in her way, and seemed to genuinely dote on her children and grandchildren.

    I've read that this documentary was produced with the best of intentions but it was like opening Pandora's box--once the public got a glimpse into the BRF's personal lives, they couldn't get enough. Kind of a shame.

    • @ronaldobrien6870
      @ronaldobrien6870 Год назад +6

      So the story goes, but from the clips I've seen, the Queen came across really well in the documentary and I don't fully buy the theory that the filming was a mistake. It was a fascinating glimpse into her life and made her seem more human. I think increased interest in the RF would have happened anyway, documentary or no documentary.

    • @HotVoodooWitch
      @HotVoodooWitch Год назад +2

      @@ronaldobrien6870 I didn't post that the family didn't come across well. I said that the documentary helped fuel a desire for more info on their personal lives; it should be pointed out as well that if the family are seen as "not so different from anyone else," there's not a whole lot of reason to defer to its members. I read that the documentary was aired only once for that very reason.

    • @Purplenpinkk
      @Purplenpinkk Год назад +1

      You nailed it! I was listening to Tina Brown's book "The Palace Papers" and it's so interesting, because she talks about how The Queen understood that stuff like this and the overwhelming popularity of Princess Diana - one person in BRF standing out from the the others - was like letting the press get a glimpse of something that they would just want more and more of and could threaten The Monarchy's survival.

    • @ronaldobrien6870
      @ronaldobrien6870 Год назад +3

      @@HotVoodooWitch For sure, but I think this increased interest in their private lives would probably have happened anyway. The British tabloid press became much more informal in the 1970s and 1980s, as did television. They were inevitably going to start prying into the private lives of the royal family and try and make them seem more human.

    • @ronaldobrien6870
      @ronaldobrien6870 Год назад +3

      @@Purplenpinkk But on the other hand, it was the Queen who pushed hard for the family to become more visible to the public. It was she who insisted that the Coronation service be televised in 1953 and who started the televised Christmas message in 1957 (even saying that she wished to be "more personal"). What she was clearly afraid of much later on with Diana was the whole thing becoming a daily soap opera and way too much private information and gossip being released, thus making the RF look very ordinary.

    Its alleged that the Royal family later regretted allowing this documentary to be made. Princess Anne said that she hated the experience of cameras following them around for a whole year as she dislijed the scrutiny of it. I think it's a wonderful gem to be able to see the Royal family living their daily lives. The public had never before seen the family so up close and personal as they are here. The Queen seems like a lovely Mother, doting on her family. Philip appears rather stand offish towards the children and rather distant bit that was due to his upbringing. Winston Churchill firmly believed that once the mystic of the Royal Family has gone, and they are seen up close, then the allure of them dissapears. I suspect he would have hated this documentary as it goes against everything he believed the Royal family should be viewed as by the public. Nevertheless, its a wonderful historical document into the family life of the late Queen and her family.

    Elizabeth II's death should remind us why monarchy is helpful. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, which opposes illegal dictatorship and helps keep the peace. If there are many reasons England, Wales, Scotland, Canada and Australia have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy to unify all the people is an important one. In the UK, 'peace' in formal speech is "The Queen's Peace".
    Of course Elizabeth II & Prince Philip had their failings as parents; King Charles III's first marriage was a tragic mistake; Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service they give, and for the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in the UK & the world. There will always be violence and political problems in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the huge, tangible power for peace and stability the British crown is for everyone in Britain, the commonwealth and for the world. Since the 1700s, billions of people have lived under the British crown without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives. God save King Charles III.
