  • Kirk Foat severely injured his hand while on vacation, so badly that when he returned to Canada, doctors feared they might have to amputate it. He underwent four surgeries to rebuild his hand, and was prescribed opioids to help with the pain.
But the opioids came with side effects, and eventually, for Kirk, didn't block his pain as well anymore. He decided to wean himself off the pills, once and for all. He shared the challenges of his experience with Dr. Brian Goldman on White Coat, Black Art.

I’m a chronic pain patient and I’m being forced to taper. I’m tired of all of it. I’m ready to get off all of it. I’m 61 years old with not many family members still alive. Not many folks for support but I’ve got to do this. Prayers please. Stay strong.

I started doing drugs since my teenage, got addicted to heroin, spent my whole life fighting heroin addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with OCD. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 4 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Hey mates! Can you help with the source? I suffer severe anxiety, panic and depression and I usually take prescription medicine, but they don't always help. Where can I find those psilocybin mushrooms? I'm really interested in treating my mental health without Rxs. I live in Australia don't know much about these. I'm so glad they helped you. I can't wait to get them too. Really need a reliable source 🙏

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

Then finally being properly diagnosed with post concussion syndrome which was extremely difficult because my memories from the day i slipped and got concussed are flashbacks at best and now I have acess to memories from when i was 4 years old, cringy drug memories which i didnt want back or even knew i had , just daily floods of old new memories , its a blessing more than a curse and only strengthens my resolve

One thing I noticed about my detox was the first two days was nothing but sweating and irregular body temperatures the third was physically tuff but the 4th day I feel alot better tho mentally I feel the brain asking for drugs tho the body is OK without them. It's a bit weird like a voice in the back of your mind that's sad because he lost his best friend or something but you have to distract the mind and allow it strengthened itself! No different than the body the mind needs recovering. Even tho the body will oblige the brain is what keeps bugging for something. It's weird but I got this the mind better catch up because we are not looking back in free and feel like it's a start to a new life from here on out!!! You can do it too I believe in everyone here!!! I understand why they're doing it, but even after one year, rattlesnake bite pain doesn't go away. I'm stuck with that pain for the foreseeable future. But they have me down from 35/40mg a day to 15mg a day and it was difficult doing so. Pain isn't managed properly at that level but I'm sure my kidneys and liver are happy to get a break

I first heard Kirk during an interview he had on White Coat/Black Art with CBC about a year and a half ago. After listening to his experience I tracked him down via Facebook and he became my go-to man for support and information on what to expect through my own opioid tapering process. He was an inspiration to me and I honestly think he gave me more advice and better support than all doctors I went to. From his home in Ontario he made the time to always respond to my messages and to check in throughout the process. I regularly received random texts of encouragement from this man I have never met and I am so thankful for that.

I think what he’s saying is acknowledging that pain is part of your life, don’t let it be your focus , I fooled myself several times by stopping pain meds for several days & then asked myself why live with this pain , the oxy wasn’t doing any harm. it wasn’t until my teeth started to rot at a rapid pace that I realized you see the harm after the damage is done. I was on prescription oxy for 8 yrs. From a neck & back injury. It’s tough at times but I try to push through the pain & focus on prayer.

Day 9 and starting to struggle but got to keep going.. be just my luck that getting off them will do me more harm then staying on them but we'll see.. but yeah people don't understand one bit.. they make out like it's easy to put down and forget.. if it was that easy we'd all be clean

I battled heavy opioid addiction for over 14 years. I tried to quit several times but the withdraw was too unbearable to deal with in practically all aspects. On my last attempt at quitting i had to deal with the nightmare of withdraw. Of course the whole body shaking, twitching, sweating, diarrhea, vomiting, and to me the part i hated the most was going a week or more without being able to sleep. Having insomnia alone for that long is a nightmare let me tell you. After i finally got past the physical part of the withdraw then i had to concentrate on the mental withdraw. That takes even longer. Anyone going thru this nightmare i can honestly say when you get out of the long dark tunnel the reward waiting for you is a better high and feeling than you can imagine. Sure i have to deal with physical pain from injuries now and then, but my worse day now is a whole lot better than my best day on meds.

Try to do activitys you love to do, yeah it's hard to focus on anything when your mind is going crazy. Because of my ms and injury i was limited in what exercises i could do. Eat as healthy as possible, stay away from processed foods and junk food. Yeah tough to do when you cant hold stuff down. Get support from friends that you can count on. When i was finally able to get sleep after 9 days of insomnia i finally started to feel a bit better. After my prescription ran out I ended up buying them off the street or taking them from my mom when I could. For a while I used them as a party drug and having fun but when I tried to stop I realized how addicted I really was. I let it go on for 6 years thinking I would one day get it under control but still haven't. I am to the point I don't even feel a high from them I just need them to function and do normal every day tasks. I'm finally ready to take my life back but I have a dental issue that I will have to have taken care of and I'm afraid if I get off the meds now then I will just have to go through it again once I have my dental procedure. should I go through the withdrawal stages now and just prepare myself to do it again once I have my surgery or should I just wait and do it once? Should I go to a rehab or should I do it at home? I'm afraid of not being mentally strong enough to go through it. I don't want to keep doing pills, I want to be myself again but I don't know if I can make it through without somebody that's able to take care of me or keep me motivated while I go through the withdrawal process. I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Throughout everything almost 2 years I'm now addicted to oxycodone. I fear my doctor will not help me taper and just cut me off. I have pain still but not as much I feel like. At the beginning I had the mindset of I'm going to just die anyway granted I was still in pain from the surgeries. I still don't know what to feel. I have hope though.

Kratom will trick your mind in to thinking it's on opiates while you aren't and you can ween off the oxy then quit kratom. I've used it a few times for that exact reason.

Tapering really does work if you wanna quit. I was doing half gram of fent a day. Got on 80 mils of methadone. And I dropped 5 mils a week until 20 mils. Then I dropped 2 mils a week. No withdrawal...then i eventually got down to 4 mils. And stopped. Nothing that bad. Few minor sleeping probs. But it's wayyyyyy easier than cold turkey. I have done both.

I too have been through the taper then quit totally for a 2 year period,
but could not function enough to do a regular job and pay bills, due to severe spinal injury & rheumatoid arthritis.
Eventually I had to start taking these meds again because I was useless & very unreliable without them,
and there was no support in Ontario that would be able to help me pay my cost of living & help support my kids & family.
I would have loved to stay clean but we all need to do what it takes situation, to be able to work and pay our inflated bills.
Because in the end, we all have a ear tag number & the current Government does not care what so ever,
so we do what we have to until our time is up.
