One thing we can all agree on is when our desktop computer decides to not power on, this typically is likely to happen on a desktop computer that is old like the dell optiplex gx520; considering the hardware is weak and does not feature surge protection or other like features that prevents power shortages from happening on a computer.
Troubleshooting a desktop that will not power on is first understanding the common factors of a no power like computer, one is the power button after all is the first part that triggers the power; second you have the power supply which is what gives the entire desktop power; and lastly we have the main motherboard which is what connects all components.

Considering you will be keeping a desktop with you for a longtime besides needing to repair this dell optiplex, is recommended to have tools with you to help you not just open the computer but also diagnose them; for example if you have a power tester which I shared with you and if you have additional parts handy with you like a power supply.
First begin by using your common sense if you have no special repair kit or diagnostic tools with you and that is to rule out which of the three was working fine just a day ago, then run down the list by determining which of the three is the second least cause of the problem and more so if you have indicators saying so; which at this point leaves you with the most likely computer component that is the problem.

With this basic understanding proceed without tools or with some if you have any, in my example here there is no freaking way the power button just died when it looks new right; so that left me with either the power supply or the motherboard.
Good thing is that common sense told me that motherboard is not likely to die suddenly unless of course is obvious like having no led on which would then seem dead, in my example here with this dell desktop which is also seen on other motherboard that the power led indicator turned on when the power supply was connected yet I had no power; strangely enough everything was leaning towards a bad power supply which had probably shorted due to storm or lighting or just plain being cheap without prevention features.
Considering I'm a computer technician keeping an extra power supply is normal in my type of business, so I quickly disconnected the old with the new and boom there was power; at this point I proceeded with installing a new power supply which offered surge and shortage features to make it much more difficult for it to die in the near future.

Oh wow I did exactly what you said and now my computer is working again. It’s an old one but Didn’t think I can do it but I did 🙏🏽 Thank you.
Glad I could help. please subscribe
Great video recommend to everyone who has the same problem of pc not turning on. This video gives good tips to make it easier.
Glad it helped
Thank you for the video.
My desktop has a rear button next to the power cord, it works and turns on fans.
My fix was to unplug main power cord at the back. Then follow the power cables inside from supply to the motherboard connection, unplug and plug it back in.
Power button now works!
I think something tripped with a storm surge recently
nice. sometimes is a glitch on the board and the power. a simply 10 second reset releases all electricity stuck and may work but not likely for most people so good news on your end.
This video was very informative. I think my problem is the power supply. Thank you.

Thank you 🙏🏾
You are so welcome
Thanks
Welcome
I just unplugged, then hed the power button down for 30 sec to get rid of flea power, then plugged it back in and it worked.

great video, easy to understand. My Dell desktop would power-up when unpluging power, then wait and hit the start button and replugin same time, now it starts for a second or two then goes out.Replaced battery and button seems ok,motherboard ?
anytime you get power from power supply. and the computer does not turn on. or even better it does like in your example and goes out again. then for sure is the motherboard the problem. because we got power.
My 7yr old Dell desktop would not power back up after update, it would freeze on Dell logo screen. It turned out to be the bios wanted a prompt to proceed with windows boot. I had after market Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I had to remove that and insert original usb keyboard and hit the F12 key at the logo screen . This brought up bios and just had to hit enter to select windows boot and it came up normally.
Great video, in my case when the power button is pressed and held it flashes amber light but it will not turn on, the only way to Kinda turn it on is to hold the power button and press the reset button on the back, that way it will stay “on” but the power button remains solid amber light, still trying to figure out…
hi. sounds to me like a button that has buildup dirt or moisture which prevents the button to have normal contact to the on and off function. my recommendation would be to remove the entire button from the front cover. then clean it with rubbin alcohol hently. also do that to the button board. this should allow a normal touch. plan B is to order a new front cover from ebay and replace with yours and that is only if the button does not want to come off. here is a great product sample that may work if after cleanup is still not working ebay.us/RhyYWL
my desktop swicthes on all the fans turn on but the screen mouse and keyboard are off what should I do
Did your problem get fixed
when the pc acts as if there is power, which is. and turns on which is. but nothing displays. the most likely cause is a fried processor which need to be replaced with a new one.
Dell OptiPlex will not power on. I have a yellow light on the mother board. and the button on back of power supply turns green when pressed fan turns on, the DVD will open and fan connected to motherboard starts to spin. as long as I have the test button pressed. is there away to check the power switch? I have never had any issues with the switch, but as of the 3 you listed I feel like all other is working other then switch/button.
two things are happening. shocked CPU and Shorted BOARD. to determine which one is the one. start with the processor replacement. if it works, then you done. if it does not, return the cpu and replace the board.
@@HernandezMasterMind Thank you, before i change the processor. how can I check the power switch? every thing was working. I went and moved my tower to another room. I did not hook it back up right away. but after maybe a week I hooked it all up and BAM no power. I thought if I get power on the board . the yellow light as mentioned. and also the Processor fan on the MB spins. I can get the DVD door to open. the fan on power supply spins also. I am going to look into replacing the items you mentioned. I am just preying it might be as simple as the power switch. I am retired and live on Disability. so funds are low. I wish to thank you again so much for troubleshooting my issue. reason I told every thing over again. My daughter said what I originally wrote was like a word salad. and probably didn't make no sense. again thank you.
Can you help me in my issue when i plug the avr on the wall outlet it automaticaly open with fan in low fan then off then open with high fan then off then i cant power up
hi. considering you have power. it tends to be a motherboard malfunction in my opinion.
I checked with a new working power supply but still only a led inside the pc is on but the pc cant be turned on .
Any help ?
indicates to me that the motherboard may be dead. find your matching board here ebay.us/no14ap
When I turn my ox on it goes right back out I replaced the cord it worked for a lil while but it is doing it again, turns on but goes right back out
hi. you replaced the power supply? this behavior sounds like a fatly board.
@@HernandezMasterMind ok so the light on the motherboard is it suppose to be red
@@HernandezMasterMind and what type of motherboard do I buy for a optiplex390 dell
@@davidaburns7496 you can get a motherboard for gx520 at ebay.us/blbJK3 and if you need a board for the optiplex 390 go here ebay.us/jg9D5V
It’s my power supply
not bad. on average the power supply goes bad. cheaper than a mother board. happy it helped you. please subscribe for future videos
what is the disctop ram
cant understand your question. ram is memory inside the desktop.
I turn it on I only see orange light inside but it can't turn on
could be an indication of a bad motherboard. shorted board. orange light or blinking light indicates is not getting the proper power. try changing the power supply first and see if it works. if not the confirm is the board.
My computer is not working properly the light is on I don't know if I should clean the fan or not
describe the problem better? if it does not turn on is either the motherboard or the power button. sometimes the power supply not the other two. if you confirm that button and power supply is good and still dead then mb.
Hai sir Iam facing orange light problem
try changing the power supply. if it still does not work. it seems like a motherboard is bad.
WHERE TO BUY A POWER SUPPLY ???
your best option for this model is ebay because of the year
Mine turns on, I see the MB LED, I hear the CPU fans but I get no video.

@@HernandezMasterMind Yes I noticed 2 electrolytic capacitors on the mother board oozed out of their tops.... I ordered new MB on Ebay for $26. I let you guys know what happens...thanks
My UPS battery started leaking and so I removed it from my PC setup. After that my CPU isn't turning on. What do you think is the issue?
Hello. Good question. Well...the processor could have shorted due to lack of proper power. Or it could simply mean is stuck on boot. What I recommend you do is the following... disconnect power from wall outlet. Then press and hold power button for 20 seconds. After release it. Now before you turn pc back on. Let's do a re-sitting of the processor and to do that is open desktop and remove cpu. Go ahead with cleaning both processor and socket with pressure air. Lastly put it all back and turn on
my computer wont turn on but the troubleshooting button is lighting up
seems like a bad shorted board. or need to reset the power. try disconencting power cable from wall. then press and hold as mentioned for 60 seconds. connect back and power on?
😢
what happened?
I think when I turned my breakers off n back on I messed up my PC. But when I plug it in the back a green light turns on for like 3 seconds but won't power on
it seems as if the motherboard shorted. Power Supply tend to have power. One way to best determine which of the two is it. Replace the power supply first. if after the same and no power then is a bad motherboard.

thanks
My led is not turing on
if led is not coming on could be an indication of a burned out board so replacing is required
My dell pc is pluged in but it is not turinig on. it was working dismorning
these older dells tend to die out of no where. you may need a new power supply or motherboard
you may need a new power supply and motherboard
