  • FIX A COMPUTER THAT WON'T POWER ON
    PC not booting up or turning on? is the computer dead? well in this video we will go through some basic steps you can take to try and fix your computer. No computer problem is the same and to a non-tech savvy person fixing or repair a computer can be a bit daunting.
    Just follow these basic steps and you should be able to diagnose your own computer problem. There are many reasons why a PC won't won't turn on but it you follow this video you should have a working computer or found a solution to the computer problem that you're having.
    First off keep it simple and cheap.
    1. Check for burning smell inside the computer or PSU (power supply) and check for any blown caps.
    2. Do you have any spinning fans? or attempting to spin?
    3. Do you have any lights on the motherboard? or any activity from the computer?
    4. Check for any loose cables or components and make sure they are fully inserted. (make sure you are getting power to the motherboard.)
    5. Try removing the CMOS battery for 30 mins and then put it back in. Or replace the CMOS battery with a new RC2032 battery. You can also remove the power cable and CMOS battery and hold the power button on to deplete the power from the computer. Hold for 30 seconds)
    6. Check the power cable on another computer or better still if you have another cable try that on the dead computer. Replace if faulty.
    7. Any beeping sounds coming from the computer?
    8. Remove any unnecessary cable like CDROM drive and try and power on the computer.
    9. Check the power button or bypass the power button on the PC case.
    10. Check PSU with power supply test if you don't want to buy a new one right away. If you have a spare PSU use that for testing. Replace PSU if needed. (You can jumper the green and black wires with a paper clip to see if it powers on.)
    11. Check ram sticks one at a time and see if it boots or turns on.
    12. If you have a black screen and the computer is on it could be a GPU graphics card issue.
    13. CPU or Motherboard issue. how do you which one it is? well unless you have a test bench setup with that socket motherboard to test the CPU you will never know. Most of the time it's the motherboard that's failed. But at this stage, you need to decide to buy or build a new computer or replace the motherboard to test the CPU. I know when you brought your £1500 or $2000 computer 8 years ago you think it's still worth that today but it's not worth £100 today. Time to make some decisions on what you want to do.
    Remember testing a dead computer yourself can be a costly venture and a computer tech should have all the right tools and parts to save you money in the long run.
    I am sure I have missed some bits out but it's hard to think of them when your filming.

    To make a long story short: If you are lucky: 1) does the MB get any power from the PSU? Are the diods lit? Do the fans spin briefly before they go down when you power on? ==> change the BIOS battery (1 - 2 €). If you are less lucky: 2) Burnt smell coming out of the PSU? (not necessarily) ==> change the PSU (25 - 300 €). In this case add a 100 or two for the things the burnt out PSU took with it when it went away (I bet it's going to be the hard drives and DVD/BR burner(s)). If you're terribly unlucky: 3) MB does not get power, possible burnt capacitors on it ==> forget it all, you may start building a new PC right away (while a few of your old components may be still usable)... I was "less lucky" myself - PSU, 3 hard drives, 1 BR burner. Thanks to Thermaltake 750W PSU & its faithful 12 years long service, may the thrash bin contain them lightly all... 🤣

    uninstalled all part,only leavong mobo and cpu + fan installed,still dark.
    added 1 ram,changimg between my 4 8gb bits and slots,checked gpu,still dark.

    One utterly daft problem that will stop a machine is the usb socket under a flap.
    i've found them shorting v+5 to case, usually because of people walking past and catching a cable plugged in, it breaks the contact support tongue and the contacts are bent into the shell, it may not short out straight away.
    I got caught out because i could not find the 5 volt short to ground in the computer, that's because it was not inside.
    I did call it some names lol :-D

    • @Britec09
      @Britec09  7 лет назад +3

      Yeah, I guess if you built a new computer that screwed it to the case which I have seen people do will ground it out, much more issue I could list I am sure. USB can be a pain.

    My computer is not even a year old, was working wonderfully then I heard something rattling...
    My dad found it was a hanging cable from the fan, so he put that back snug.
    But then my computer wouldn't turn on via the power switch. He told me he got it to turn on 'power switch by the bios' I think he said...
    So we havr to turn it on inside the computer...
    My computer has a constant glow (that's a good thing) that pulses when the switch in the back or surge protector strip is on...But the power switch won't turn the computer on..
    I am very tight but I also am not going to replace the case.
    So if there is something I can do to make sure if the power switch is permanently dead, without harming anything else...I'd appreciate the tip.
    She is under warranty though, but the builder is not local. So if I can make sure what the issue is, I'll know what to tell them and go from there.
    Thank you in advance...
    Trying to learn..But don't want to screw it up either *nods*

    My scenario: I went on vacation for a week, and when I came back, my computer wouldn't turn on. It would try to turn on for 1 sec, then turn off and stay off for 3 sec, and it kept repeating that cycle. There was a heavy thunderstorm the night before I arrived. My computer was off and plugged into a surge protector, but I guess it the storm still messed with it. I took out all my RAM sticks, and the computer finally broke the power cycling, but wouldn't load windows, so I turned it off again. I plugged the RAM sticks back in, and voila, computer started and booted up like normal. Hope this helps anyone who has a similar situation!

    • @galoon
      @galoon 5 лет назад

      @John Philip I'm having a similar issue. I had my computer unplugged for about a day and when I plugged it back in and went to turn it on, nothing happened. Even the modem wouldn't turn on when everything was plugged in. I noticed the surge protector was bad, so I tried a new one--nothing. Then I turned on the monitor first; it came on. Then I turned on the CPU and both it and the modem turned on and seems to work fine! Not sure what's going on here. Everything in my rig now starts up only if I turn on the monitor first. Something must be fried somewhere.

    What about if You push the power button and all You get is a constant piiiiiiip sound and You have to pull the plug to shut it down again ??? Won't even get the BIOS bootup or anything just that constant piiiiip sound. Really loud too. Not from the speakers but from inside the case. It's an old PC with win XP and I don't really want to waste money fixing it but want to be able to boot it to save all the files and photos on it. I think I have most stuff saved on External HD but might have a bit more in there since it was years since I used it and backed it up on external HD. Just been standing for years. Not been on in ages and all I get now is that piiiiip sound when I tried it.

    • @Schnitzer325ci
      @Schnitzer325ci 7 лет назад +1

      HolyOrderofDragons The beep sound is a hardware failure. Could be lucky and you just need to re seat the RAM / Graphics card. Go to the manufacturers website or google beep codes for "dell" for example. Make sure it is specific to your series of machine. However if that freebie doesn't work and you plan on canning the whole system with the need for Data recovery. Just go on eBay and buy an external HDD reader. Take the hard drive out and dock it to your current machine. The files should appear but make sure your system does not format the disk when you connect it to read the data. Hope that helps! Any further issues, ping back here and I'll try to help you.

    If you feel uneasy with adlib speech, there is an old technique of having an off camera list of each point you wish to cover, it acts as a safety net for you. The trick is do not have a start of a sentence, like this example, "Always check the stand off posts, because" using this type of point traps you into a specific answer. Rather just have "Stand off posts" this only commits you to the topic and you are free to talk about a variety of material concerning - stand off posts. The adlib speech allows you to repeat important instructions or suggestions.
    Keep up the good work.

    Hi Brian, there are a couple of things i don't think you mentioned, one is if the mains lead is suspect try it on you kettle see if the kettle works, and the other thing is you could remove the graphics card and see if it will work on the onboard video from motherboard.....if anyone is a bit more technical they could check the power supply and the cmos battery with a multimeter....Fred in Essex.

      I have found that just disconnecting the 24, 8, and Molexes, then pin green & black, switch on and see if PSU runs. Then test 24 pin connector for correct voltages. That gets you half way thru this video in a couple of mins.

    Interesting note about the blown caps. Back in 2007-2010 in my time as an IT engineer at the NHS, we had several Dell Optiplex's failing with blown caps. Calling Dell it turns out they were a batch built using knock off caps that came from a bent Russian factory. So Dell were having to replace the motherboards for free.
    How true that back story was I never knew.

    Used to be part of an IT team that maintained 25,000 computers at a college. We saw several individual plugs on industrial grade power strips fail over the years. That declined somewhat as initial power draw at boot dropped. But on old computers it could still happen on home power strips. I've had that happen at home. If it does, replace the power strip completely.
    On a related note, if you have a laser printer, use the power cord included. Some have a larger cord because it needs to heat up the fuser faster (to fuse the toner to the paper). YMMV.
