      Hello gentlemen,
      I purchased all the PC components online and decided to build it by myself.
      But when i hit the power button, it's not powering up. Not the posting error, but motherboard itself has no power.
      Not single Debug LED turned on. Not even the CPU fan.
      So, I checked the Power Supply Unit(PSU) by shorting the 24 connector pin, and its working fine.
      And also connected it with another motherboard its working.
      So, I thought maybe the motherboard is faulty because PSU is working.
      Then i returned the motherboard to the manufacturer for replacement, but they checked the motherboard and shockingly it is also working.
      Now I am really confused what is the reason!!
      please help me with that.
      Build Components:
      1). AMD RYZEN 7 3700X PROCESSOR
      2). Msi MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi Motherboard

    I tuck the power box out of an old computer to use as a malty tap power supply i.e. 3.3V, 5V ,12V for a bread board and Arduino projects.
    I had power to the box and through the on-off toggle switch on the box but no power out or fan movement, so I followed your instructions, joined the green and the black pins and it now works. Thanks to your video you've saved a lot of electronics from the scrap bin.

  • @juddery
    @juddery 3 года назад +64

    Very useful video to help beginners, but there are a couple of things to add to make it even more effective. Some power supplies don't spin their fans until they get above a certain temperature or power load. Also, the power supply fan spinning, doesn't indicate the full health of the power supply. You also need to test the various dc power outputs of the power supply, like the 5v and 12v lines. You'll need a multimeter for that though. The reason is that quite often the fan will spin, but the power supply won't be giving out the correct voltages to power on the computer. If your computer does power on but then completely shuts off while doing something like gaming, that can also be a symptom of a failing power supply or just a power supply that isn't sufficiently powerful for your computer. As a side note, be very cautious about buying cheap power supplies, such as the ones in this video. Most are junk and some are potentially dangerous and can cause fires if overloaded. One last point, unless you know what you are doing, never open the power supply case unless you want to risk getting a very nasty and potentially lethal shock.

      "You also need to test the various DC power outputs of the power supply, like the 5V and 12V lines [with a multimeter]"

      A week ago I found a random ddr3 RAM stick lying around whilst cleaning the house and decided that perhaps I could install it into a prebuilt tower (some old lenovo from 2010) my mum uses (she doesn't use it much, only occasionally)
      I opened up the tower once before a month or two just to check the insides since I was bored and nothing went wrong after that.
      2 days ago I opened up the thing once again to install the RAM. I noticed the CPU power cable (an old 4 pin connector, not the 8 pin ones used today) was kinda in the way and I had to tug it a bit to install the RAM.
      problem is installing the RAM was a hassle and one of the clip things didn't really click properly. I also didn't really ground myself and touched the RAM cards everywhere, including the golden pins.
      Before installing the new RAM i took out the old one to see if the one I found was compatible and it was. PC3 8500U and the old one was PC3 12800U. installed both dimm modules, turned on the switch annnnd...shit doesn't turn on, whcih was weird because we literally just used it an hour before to read some old CDs we also happened to find while cleaning.
      I try reinstalling the RAM, again not caring about grounding myself and same thing happens again. later I read about the grounding yourself before touchy thing and assumed that i probably killed the ram, but the thing didnt even turn on at all so it definitely wasnt a RAM problem. another thing to note is that while doing all this I didnt disconnect the power cable. (external switch on the mains was off though, the psu itself didnt have one)
      so here I am still freaking out. I only can think of two scenarios:
      1. mobo is somehow dead
      2. cpu cable isnt connected properly (remember how I yanked on it)
      problem is said cable is located directly under this giant plate blocking and surrounding the CPU and heatsink that houses the CPU fan. I'm afraid I'll mess something up if I take it out but upon using my phone camera to peek at the cable under it it doesn't seem to be that loose. (isn't coming out despite solid yanks, only wobbling a bit)
      man this sucks.

    • @jross380
      @jross380 2 года назад +3

      Thanks for raising this. In my case rhe paper clip test proved that the fan was spinning leaving the switch or the motherboard. The jumper test for the switch did not work so it had to have been the motherboard. Right? Wrong! Yes the paper clip test did make the fan spin but it felt weak. On impulse I had another power supply and so swapped it over and bingo, everything lit up and worked. As you say, my PSU was working but in poor health, so much so that it did not power up the motherboard. Therefore assuming a faulty motherboard would have been the wrong diagnosis. I want to share this experience so I'm repeating it as a main comment. Thanks again.

    • @juddery
      @juddery 2 года назад +3

      @@nerd2544 apologies for the delay in replying. I never actually received a notification for your reply. To elaborate though, a computer power supply doesn't just provide a single voltage. It will output 12v via one set of wires, 5v via another set and sometimes other voltages too. Quite often a power supply can fail partially, but not fully, because one or more components inside it has failed. This will often result in the output voltages to be much lower, or more rarely much higher than they should be. Using a multimeter on DC voltage mode, you can measure those output voltages. If they are more than a little different to what they should be, there is a high chance that something in the power supply has failed, even though the fan might still spin. If the voltage is not as it should be, the computer will be starved of power and will either not run at all, or may seem to run okay until you try to do anything useful with it. Gaming in particular can pull a lot of power from the psu and if the psu is not up to the task, your pc may shut down under load. I hope that helps and answers your question.

    Thank you a great simple 1,2,3 approach to solving what can be an incredibly baffling problem. However sometimes it may not be so black and white. I'm posting this to share experiences. In my case the paper clip test proved that the fan was spinning leaving the switch or the motherboard. The jumper test for the switch did not work so it left the motherboard. That was the only conclusion to left. However the spinning fan on the PSU didn't feel right, it felt weak. On impulse I had another power supply and so swapped it over and bingo, everything lit up and worked. The PSU therefore although working was in poor health. See comment by Peter Judd. In this case assuming a faulty motherboard would have been the wrong diagnosis.

    HELLO TOROGI! Am an avid Subscriber, you are my first 'Go to' when diagnosing PC issues! I recently built a new Computer in my old Tower with a new Raidmax Vampire 1000W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply, an MSI Z390-A PRO Motherboard with an Intel Pentium Gold Processor G5400 CPU @ 3.7GHz! Next added 64.0 GB DDR4 3200 Ram! Also a ZOTAC GAMING GeForce GTX 1 Video Card! Recently upgraded all my HHD's with an Intel 660p Series M.2 1 TB SSD Drive C and two WD I TB internal SSD's! My Computer now boots up completely for a cold start in 30 seconds!!!! (Once in a while when I turn it on, it Boots into the Bios Screen)!!!(But when I wont to boot into Bios, no matter what key combination I press it wont go into Bios on Command)! Windows will not display on my Digital Monitor but I can see the Bios Screen on another HDMI Output to my 32 inch TV! Am running XMP Mode and Gaming Mode on the MSI along with allocating 3/4 of my Ram to Process my Adobe Premiere 2022! My Question is: How do I get the computer to Boot into Windows EVERY TIME? And secondly, How do I get my computer to boot into Bios on command?
