  • This is my Girlfriends computer its probably from 2008 or so as it came with Vista. what happen was there was a power outage when the power company was doing work on the lines and the computer was on at the time. After this the computer would not turn on by the button at all. I have learned from the past that you could use a paperclip to jumpstart the power supply, as I used this to diagnose is the power supply was fried. turns out it works. I then assumed the motherboard is gone. However after messing with it I got the computer to start up and power on completely with the paperclip trick. The hard drive I am using is not the one that was set up for this computer, thats why the operating system wont load. I was later able to manage to get it to turn on by the button but then it doesnt work. The button dont turn it on all the time anymore but it always turns it off so the button is still good. Sometimes when i use the paperclip the light only comes on orange and the computer will not start and the fans are revved up full speed.Watch the video as I show you what it does. Anyone know what the cause is?

How amazing. I bought a laptop a few years ago. Since then i don't use my dell anymore. It still worked for a while. But it's been a year since it has not worked. I used the paper clip thing as you suggested. (something i never heard before) My computer is operating amazingly! Thank you s much for your video! Now i can get back to my old pics and stuff i had saved in there.
    Again thank you!

i saw your video last night and i kind of knew a bit about what might be wrong, Yesterday i cleaned the power supply, and heat sink fins, and kept pluging the harness in and out and it would work prior to the cleaning, but i knew noting about the paper clip, and or removing the motherboard battery, till like i said i watched you go through the steps, And mind you i had all but giving up on my dell. Sat in stroage for months, so i will make it short i went to the shed got my dell out and did what you did AND LORD AND BEHOLD, IT WORKED ON THE FIRST TRY, of course the jumper click in place and i got the blue light, you had a bit of more to do due to that hard drive you had lol. but overall i want to thank you for that video, peace out
    Texasrangerlawman: thank you so much!!!!!

    1. Get a new power supply. 2. Enter bios setup and make sure your boot order is set correctly. 3. Make sure the SATA mode is set to match the way in which Windows was installed: IDE or AHCI mode - when Windows was installed the setting was probably AHCI and when you removed the CMOS battery to clear the CMOS, the SATA mode probably defaulted to IDE mode. The SATA mode determined how Windows accesses the hard drive. Do not use a paper clip to short the power connector, you will cause more damage, and possibly injure yourself.

The problem may be corrupted BIOS/Firmware.
I have encountered 2 of these Dell 530 computers with the Foxconn G33M02 motherboard. In both cases, it was acting just like the computer in this video. They would not start, or the fan would spin at high speed, etc. The power supplies were good. They acted like the motherboards were dead. I both cases I found that the CMOS battery had very low voltage. Around 1 volt. I replaced the CMOS battery. I then cleared the CMOS memory. To clear CMOS memory, unplug computer, find the 3 pin connector labelled CLR_CMOS, remove the jumper from pins 2-3 and put it on pins 1-2 for about 10 seconds. Put the jumper back on pins 2-3 and plug computer back in. If you are lucky, the computer will start up. You will need to go into computer Setup to reset the time etc. Press F2 at startup to enter Setup. In my case, this procedure fixed both computers.

Get yourself a new power supply for 15 quid and you should be back in business. Thats how I fixed mine and I still use it to this day. In addition you can upgrade the BIOS so the Pc will support 8Gb RAM instead of the usual 4 GB.

Wow -- believe it not this worked for me. My mom's computer got hit with a power surge. The computer was old and needed to be replaced, but I wanted to get her files. This technique allowed me the get it going and copy the files to a flash drive. I used the paper clip just as he described.

i still have this computer and i upgraded the processor the ram to 8gb put in 1tb ssd and upgrade to windows 11. works better than a $500 new hp which uses cheap junk parts. ill never buy a cheap new computer again when older ones are cheaper to upgrade and have better quality parts and faster speed.

  • @HangingWithDan

you probably fixed this already because the video was made in late 2012..... but the power supply on the back of the computer should have a red switch. switch it back and forth and it should turn on again..... if its not that, then your power supply may have been damaged and needs to be replaced.... good luck! - especially to anyone else who may have this problem. Never ever mess with the wires on the inside.

I had the same problem with my dell inspiron 530. I fixed the fans revving by removing the battery on the motherboard while the computer was unplugged and putting it back in after a few seconds. It now boots perfectly.

Mine does the full fan blast for about 2 seconds and then off, and repeats. I have to unhook the PCIe power to my gtx550ti, and quickly plug it in after the POST beep. I have an Antec HE 500 PSU, and changed the processor to the E8600, 2x2gb pc6400 sticks. I'm typing on the computer right now, no heavy usage freezes. I'm changing the CMOS battery next but I'm leaning towards the PSU I bought.

Better than what I can do....
One thing is, when you removed the ROM battery, it lost all the important setting needed to start up properly, hence why you were getting diskette failure messages (most computers at imitial settings look for the A drive, the diskette, as the place for an operating system to boot from). If you let that battery be, you'd probably be a LOT closer to a solution.

Ok so typically when this happens to my Dell Inspiron 530 I let it sit unplugged for like 8 hours. but the paperclip trick actually works! a little bit of tinkering with it to get it to work but it does. thank you so much I'll have to remember this for next time. special note... You may need to reconfigure your BIOS after all this so that it boots into the correct thing.

  • @patricknedz
    @patricknedz  12 лет назад

I learned from Vo Tech computer class sometimes removing the battery can clear things from BIOS and reset things that may cause a problem. The computer does boot after doing this (well at least turns on) well using the paperclip. The button doesnt always work though. removing the battery made it at least work a little. It wont boot because I dont have the hard drive that was setup with this computer.

Those Hipro power supplies are KNOWN for bad caps! Either service the power supply or replace it. If you forget to set the cmos clear jumper properly, it won't power up either.

  • @craigbest2789
    @craigbest2789 11 лет назад +1

Well, The PWS tester is very inexpensive, quick, and easy. That power supply likely has a failure in the secondary power system, which is why it starts to boot, from the primary circuit, however, either the -5V or the +5V circuit is damaged... thus the power cant remain on. Jumping it like that will short your switch or cause the switch to melt, or worse. Voltage feed spikes can and do damage the cheaper brand power supply units. So, did you fix it??

Mine does the same thing - the onboard video chip needed reflowing - did it myself with a heat gun. Started out slow, and it ran great until I shut it off, then same thing. So I got it a little hotter, then it started like normal for a week, now it's been a month and a half and all is well!

well, you *could* use a voltmeter to trouble shoot the independent +5V -5V +12V COM PWR -12V wires, however its not foolproof since you could see a Primary power circuit function, and the Secondary not function. The Power Tester is your best bet. It plugs in, and done. You know immediately if the PSU is bad or not.

I have the same problem that I'm going through right now same computer same everything. but this is happened before. Here's what I do. unplug it and hold the power button until the lights turn off. hit the power button again a few hundred times just for good measure and then leave it alone for 6 to 8 hours unplugged so that the capacitors can completely discharged. after that it should start up at least once. whatever you do leave the computer on once it starts. leave it on for at least 24 hours. after that everything should have normalized. I think I'm going to be investing in a backup battery supply because unexpected power outages brownouts or having to smother the computer and caused this problem. its a shitty power supply its not broke just shitty. haven't tried the paper clip thing yet. I think I'm going to wait it out and if it doesn't boot after 6 hours I will try the paper clip thing.

wow paper clip thing new one to me, but crazy I had lot of issues with my dell in time, power outages was simple start in safe mode and restart again, I have been having problems where I wake up and computer went black, like it just goes out overnight, and when I go to wake it up, or restart, nothing on monitor but I hear fans and shit. so I shut down, restart and it starts beeping, and nothing on screen. so after few tries same thing, I ended up removing a fan to clean dust, I went to start up. it was unplugged, and swear it gave me a screen and said about fan failure, hit f2, I shut it down, plugged in fan . powered on, all was good again

The electric went again today, same thing, wont turn on, there is a button on the back of the power supply which does the same thing as putting the paper clip in, it send power to everything at once, i messed around with the button, plugging things in and out, then all of a sudden it startes with a blue led on the power button and is now working fine, maybe it is a protection device on the board, who knows??

+Jesse The Laser It would be very difficult to replace the motherboard in this compute. The back surface of the Dell 530 is a single sheet of metal with holes for the motherboard connectors. This is not like most computers, where there is a large rectangular cut out for the back connector shield. You would have to find a replacement motherboard with the exact same connector layout.

You Need to Replace The DELL NT294 Power Button . When the Microswitch is Turned On and Off more than a Thousand Times the Contacts in the Switch wear down and cause a Power Loss to the motherboard . This problem drove me crazy trying to Figure out what was Wrong with my Dell 530 Inspiron Turning itself Off and On and crashing Over and over Again until I replaced that Power Button .

Dude, do yourself a favor and get a $14 power supply tester, if you're gonna be diagnosing PC power issues. Jumping the pins is foolish. Also, you jumped PWR/ON and COM. Not ground. Clearly your not understanding electronics, and just looking for a quick "hack" gimmic fix. Replace the faulty Power Supply.

Since this was published in 2012 this comment is not relevant to anything except to be a rant. The Dell 530 comes with a FOXCONN motherboard. They are famous for graphic chipset failures due to substandard solder. So, the motherboard is junk in anycase. To test the power supply just pop a spare one in. Outlet PC sells a 400watt superior replacement for about $18. Personally, I like Dell but anything with FOXCONN in it was lucky to run more than two years, check the record. HP had the same problems with them. Hope this helps someone somewhere. This boy should not touch computer or video cameras. IMHO.

Foxconn has been involved in several controversies all relating to employee grievances or treatment. Foxconn has more than a million employees.[73] In China, it employs more people than any other private company as of 2011.[35]
      Working conditions Edit
Allegations of poor working conditions have been made on several occasions.[74] News reports highlight the long working hours,[27][28] discrimination against mainland Chinese workers by their Taiwanese co-workers,[75] and lack of working relationships at the company.[76] Although Foxconn was found to be compliant in the majority of areas when Apple Inc. audited the maker of its iPods and iPhones in 2007,[7] the audit did substantiate a few of the allegations.[77] Despite the suicide crisis which took place from January to May 2010, Steve Jobs defended Foxconn in June 2010 as being "pretty nice" and "not a sweatshop".[78]
Concerns increased in early 2012 due to an article published in The New York Times.[79] Substantiating some of the article's claims, a 2012 audit performed by the Fair Labor Association at the request of Apple Inc. found that workers routinely received insufficient overtime pay and suggested that workplace accidents may be common.[80][81]
A Hong Kong non-profit organisation, Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior, has written numerous negative reports on Foxconn's treatment of its employees.[82] These typically find far worse conditions than the 2012 Fair Labor Association audit did,[citation needed] but they rely on a far smaller number of employee informants-100 to 170.[83] The Fair Labor Association audit in 2012 used interviews with 35,000 Foxconn employees.[80]
In September 2012, a fight at worker dormitories in Taiyuan, Shanxi, escalated into a riot involving 2,000 people and was quelled by security.[84][85]
In October 2012, the company admitted that 14-year-old children had worked for a short time at a facility in Yantai, Shandong Province.[86] Foxconn said that the workers involved were part of an internship program.[86] Individuals as young as 16 can legally work in China.[86]
Also in October 2012, a young worker, Zhang Tingzhen, was threatened to have Hon-Hai medical support canceled when doctors remonstrated against moving him ("Zhang’s doctors fear he is at risk of a brain hemorrhage en route"[87]) for treatment in Huizhou from the hospital in Shenzhen. His doctors did "surgery to remove nearly half his brain, [after which] he lost his memory and can neither speak, walk"[87] after a factory accident where he suffered an electrical shock and fall. This left him in no condition to travel to Huizhou, the city where he was initially hired, 43 miles away. The company stated that it was acting within labor laws.[87][88][89][90]
      Suicides Edit
      Main article: Foxconn suicides
Suicides among Foxconn workers have attracted media attention. One was the high-profile death of a worker after the loss of a prototype and the other, a series of suicides linked to low pay in 2010. Suicides of Foxconn workers continued into 2012, with one in June 2012.[91]
Sun Danyong, a 25-year-old man, committed suicide in July 2009 after reporting the loss of an iPhone 4[92] prototype in his possession.[93]
In reaction to a spate of worker suicides in which 14 people died in 2010,[94] a report from 20 Chinese universities described Foxconn factories as labor camps and detailed widespread worker abuse and illegal overtime.[95] In response, Foxconn installed suicide-prevention netting at the base of buildings in some facilities,[74] and it promised to offer substantially higher wages at its Shenzhen production bases.[96] Workers were also forced to sign a legally binding document guaranteeing they and their descendants would not sue the company as a result of unexpected death, self-injury or suicide.[97]

My "new" Dell Inspiron 530 I just got has a solid amber light on the power button. Surprisingly when I pressed the amber button it went blue and it DID POST a couple times and I checked out the BIOS. I put a solid state drive in it and powered it on but it won't POST now. I disconnected the SSD but it still won't POST. It now still has the solid amber light but when I press the power button it goes blue like before but it will not beep. The screen doesn't power on now either. I press the power button again and it turns off. I don't have to hold it in to turn it off. I guess I'll get a new Power Suppy Unit but do you know if it might be something else? I'd hate to get the new PSU and it still does this. I DID replace the CMOS battery as I was told the old one was bad and the guy I bought it from replaced it with another old battery and he wasn't sure about it. So I put in a new one. But my power button isn't flashing orange which I think means its the CMOS. It's light is solid amber. So solid orange means a power supply problem, I've read. Could it be something other than the PSU?? I will point out that there is two different kinds of memory in the computer but with the amber light meaning a power problem could it be the memory? Any help is appreciated. -Tom

I don’t really know much about working on computers these days since it’s been so long that I have tried to fix it. Been using a 12 year old MacBook as my only computer. The one in this video is long gone now and never did find a permanent solution. Try searching online for the similar problem and maybe find some message boards or something. I’m sure there is someone that can help, internet is full of good resources these days.

@@patricknedz Thanks for your response Patrick. I discovered the graphics card was the problem for the computer not POSTing. Once I pulled it out the computer would work. I put a new card in and everything seemed to be fine but the BIOS keeps resetting. I put a new CMOS battery in but it's still resetting. So maybe the points are not connecting to the battery, or the jumper is on the wrong prongs, or there's a problem with the motherboard. I'll check it out. Thanks again Patrick!

@@patricknedz Oh hey, I just came across this video again and saw my message.
So, what was wrong with this Inspiron 530 I had purchased was the jumper to the CMOS battery was on only the last prong, prong 3 I think. It's supposed to be on prongs 2 and 3 to keep a charge to the motherboard from the CMOS battery. I was glad that the jumper was still there at all. I started up the computer but still had the orange light on the power button. Then I discovered the connectors to the CMOS battery weren't touching on the side of the battery. Once I bent them over a little they now were making contact with the battery and the computer now holds the BIOS settings when power is cut from the wall socket. I was thrilled. I was glad it wasn't the motherboard.
Another problem also was the PSU was a MicroCenter upgrade that apparently was made to make the computer sell better by promoting that it was a higher wattage but was actually a poor PSU. I read this PSU was known as an "Exploding PSU". HAHA! Which it did a few weeks ago with white smoke blowing out the back and the fans revving higher than I've ever heard when I started the computer. Luckily nothing was ruined by the overload that this PSU was sending. I noticed when I'd hit "Restart" on Windows that the computer would sometimes rev up the fans the whole time even after Windows had loaded. I didn't understand what was going on. I thought it was a virus at first and then thought maybe it was an inherent problem with Inspirons or something. But now I think it was the PSU giviing the wrong power and my computer was trying to tell me something. It was always loading up fine when I'd start it but this would happen with restart. I've not had the fans rev up since but I haven't restarted the computer that often. Maybe it could happen again.
So now this computer is running at it's best with the Q9650 CPU, 8 GB's of 800Mhz RAM (I've been told that 1066Mhz will work with some effort), I've since discovered that this card in the PCI slot is not a modem card but rather a 1000Mbps LAN card ( I was connecting to the internet through the original 100Mbps port, doh!), got the new PSU, put in a GTX 1050Ti (overkill on modern games, yes, but works great for VP9 4k video on RUclips. With only 8GB's of RAM I don't think I'll ever play any powerful GPU hungry modern games on this computer anyway.) I put a Bluray drive in it too but the video's aren't playing perfectly with some jitter every now and then. I haven't tackled this problem yet. Maybe a better player program will fix it, maybe 1066Mhz RAM, or the flow rate is just too slow for Bluray video. Although I think a Bluray drive may have been an option with the quad core version of these computers when Blurays first came out. I put a 2 TB SSD in it too. Today an SSD is a given. I upgraded the BIOS to the 1.0.18 version too. I don't know if the computer would accept 8 GB's of RAM without this, or at least a later BIOS than the 1.0.15 in the computer originally. I also put a new front panel in for 3.0 USB devices. Much faster than the 2.0 USB that came with the Inspiron. I had to plug it into the PCIe 1.0 slot under the double wide GPU which I guess weren't out or popular at the time the Insperon Foxconn motherboards were made. So I had to use and extention cable out of the PCIe 1.0 slot to the card that supplies the data to the front panel and have the card sit inside the computer loose with a cardboard made covering to protect it and the other parts to not make electical contact. Ha!
I've also replaced the thermal paste on the CPU, Northbridge and Southbridge chips. The Northbridge cooler was a little tough to get loose. But the Southbridge cooler was "cemented" to the chip! I had to use a pair of plyers and rock the cooler back and forth to the point where I thought any harder and I'd break the motherboard! It took a few minutes of this repeated rocking 'til 'CRACK!!!" it came loose. Then it took forever to get the old paste off. It was a thrill moment when I said "I see letters on the chip. What does that say?? INTEL!!!!" That was fun to first make out that word on the chip.
So today now I'm going to do this with my mom's old Inspiron. This was the whole point of this Inspion I've got now. Learn everything and then work on my mom's Inspiron as not to ruin her's. After learning everything, it's been great. Next thing is I'm now going to get a Vostro 200 or 400 case (same as the Inspiron 530's but the black version) and put in a modern motherboard. The back panel is part of the case but I know that can be cut out. And the front power connector has to be rewired to connect to a standard motherboard connection as Dell had it's on connection that was never released to the public. But everthing else is standard from what I've read.
