Fixed Not Powering On Dell XPS 8940 D28M Desktop

- Dell XPS not powering on.
There is no display on monitor, no light, fan not spinning..etc
More likely the power supply is shorted out. Hoping the surge did not shorted the motherboard.
Lets change power supply on Dell XPS 8940.

There's only two compatible PSUs, a 360w & a 500w. IMO only buy the OEM models that actually have a Dell label if you want a hassle free repair. I've ran into to many issues with several of the aftermarket ones to know better.
I have this same computer and this same exact problem. You did however not mention that little green light on the back of the computer that is on the power supply. When I unplug my computer and then plug it back in, that little green light comes on for a few seconds and then goes out. So my question (and to keep unnecessarily from buying a power supply), is it possible for the power supply to be actually bad, IF that light still comes on?
I have the same issue after a very brief fluctuation of the power at home, green light comes on for 2 seconds then goes out. What did you find wron with yours? THanks in advance.
@@MrBacilonI didn’t. I did purchase an OEM PSU, popped that in but it did not fix my problem. So, I’m guessing it’s the mother board 😢 (however, THIS video really gave me the confidence to try to attempt the repair myself)
Since I keep ALL my files on an external storage device, I figured it would be easier to just replace the computer, rather than repair the old one. I found a seller on Facebook marketplace, who had a really nice one for less than what it cost to repair the old one. So I purchased it. No regrets, much better unit!

Highly unlikely if the light stays on, but if it goes back off after a few seconds after pressing the power button then it is a bad PSU. Make sure that your charger's cord is properly inserted into the charger. On the bright side, you could be in my spot where you've already replaced the PSU with a known working identical one, get the light to stay on after having replaced it, but the power outage that took out my first PSU apparently also took out something else it it's build that I have to remove before it'll start up again. May have taken out my RAM, CPU, or motherboard too, I don't know yet. Sucks to be me.
Is there a way to short start the power supply, jump black cable and green cable on standard powersupply. I don't know which of the wires is nutreal.
Dell hobbled this model with this ridiculously unnecessary PSU setup, and crippled us as users, ruining our user experience the first time we go to upgrade that little Midget-Graphics Card it comes with. Made it very difficult & confusing to find compatible PSUs. I pray they don't continue this practice & learn from their mistakes. That's why we love our Dells. They're like the Chevy pickups of trucks! Parts are cheap & everywhere, easy to upgrade & work on. This model didn't live up to Dell's 'Quality User Experience Standards' set by themselves & what we've all come to expect from their leadership.

@@UbergeeksBiz I own power supply testers. They aren't designed for anything other that standard atx power supplies. Nothing available for any atx 12v or atx12vo. I did figure out which 2 pins to short to turn it on and used a multimeter and test the 12v at 12.2v, but that is a very rudimentary test.
Hi, I have the same machine D28M and the same problem.
But, when I plug my power cable I have the green light turning on. This mean that my power supply is good ?
I have a second question, do you have a led on the motherboard to let you know that the electricity is going throug. I don't see any led on mine.

@@earpoon Probably not fixed. The video is just showing how to change the PSU. The same case with my Dell. It stays dead 😢😂
