You followed the known eq setting for high gain mark tones and got a good high gain sound. This has been basically the eq setup for all the marks since the mark iii to get a solid metal tone
Just bought your capture pack and I'm in love! I haven't even had the itch to try any other amps out on the QC (yet). I've wanted the Mark V 35 since they released it, thank you for this, great job!
I bought the 90 watt head from a friend at a pretty reasonable price. I didn’t like it at first, the cleans were good right out front f the gate but I was getting frustrated with the high gain stuff. Then, I did some research. Once I got the hang of how the gain stages with for the Mark amps I was finally getting tones I could use. Then I added a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe up front, and an MXR 10 band eq in the loop. That took the amp to a whole new level. Good video and playing as always, I appreciate your hard work and sharing of knowledge. \m/
I was in the same situation with my V 90w, now a bit better.. I always prefer to use the preset eq + 10 bands eq in the loop and boost the front sometimes with sd1. I like it better, but still not like the wow thing for me! I feel frustrated a bit, I do not have that much time to play, and when I want, I find myself just tweaking my V 90w 🙈😅
About 9 years ago, I was saving to by my first used car on my own.... Instead I blew about a few thousand dollars on this amp, ordering it from the Mesa custom shop in seafoam green tolex and a wheat colored woven front grille, and a blonde 212 from Avatar. I wanted my first tube rig to be a serious one and it's beautiful. I then spent $1000 on a shitty 98 Honda Civic lol. I still have the amp but the car is long gone! It was the better investment, I've never regretted it or questioned it.
Hey John. Great tones! I've got the 90W version and I love it too! The amp is very focused and mid forward. I pair the amp with an Orange Rockerverb III. That combo is killer and sounds absolutely massive. I would love to see you do a video on that. Love your channel!
Great work Jon! I've had a V-35 for several years and this really nails it. Look forward to checking out the captures on my QC. I read recently (don't remember where so can't give proper credit) that on a Mark Lead channel you should really consider the first few channel settings (Gain / High / Mid / Bass) as the dials on an outboard distortion / OD pedal and then consider the Presence, Master and (most importantly) graphic EQ as the actual amp. I think that is a perfect summary of how it works. If you keep that in mind when dialing in the amp, then it all starts to make sense.
Appreciate the physical amp/cab evaluations. Also picked up the Mark V many years ago after watching one your earlier detailed & thorough comparisons of the amps available on the market. That said, the Mark V is indeed a PITA to dial-in. Bookmarking this video for later reference :)
Man, you put the work in! I have most of the amps you play, and a few underground boutique amps. I'm redoing my so called "studio" to look good, because it's not going to sound good! Definitely going to get the Mark V pack. I spent over 100 years dialing in every stripe Mark III and I love my Mark IV's. I have the V and the VII, but I just don't feel 'em like the IV's. Good job, mate!
I've owned a Mark IV A for 15+ years and it's my "will take it into my grave" amp. The trick to a high gain tone on the lead channel is almost zero bass, crank the treble, mid to taste, gain around 7-8. Then you do V shape on graphic EQ, which is pretty much what you did. I usually back off the treble a little bit on the graphic but that's just my preference as it can get a little ice picky if you over do it.
great video Jon!!! I had a mark 5:25 for a while until I graduated to the mighty mark IV...that, my friend is a beast!!! pair it with either a engl fireball 100 or a badlander 50W in a stereo rig...cheers brother!!!
Mark series are an odd beast, but as a rule bass at "0" and treble at "10" is key for tight high gain tone, which makes no sense if you're used to using literally any other amp.
Yeah, you really have to think of the EQ knobs as an EQ pedal before the amp that controls which frequencies from the guitar pickup are getting passed through to the distortion - that was the key thing for me after I got my Mark V 25. Setting those knobs to noon is gonna sound terrible if you want the Metallica or Petrucci type sound. The Graphic EQ sliders are actually what the EQ knobs do on any other amp, where they come after the distortion in the circuit.
Did you know that the channel eq drives the gain? If you pull the EQ down the zero the amp is silent. Having the treble above 12 o'clock is not really recomended.
I spent a good year with the full size MKV and I think that they changed the voicing for the 25/35 watt versions. I GREATLY preferred the sounds I was getting from the MKV 35. Yeah not as much clean headroom vs the big boy version but I always run DI anyways so it didn't matter.
Still waiting for the IIC+ model that was in the 2020 release list for the QC ;) The JP2C channels are really close tho! Wonder if we'll get the mark vii? The only amp I haven't sold is my mark v 25. Such a beast, you're totally right on how loud they can get. Was jamming in a small room with a drummer, had the master at 2.5 or so through a 5150III 212 cab using the tilt legs. No issues with keeping up! Also a big fan of the Crunch channel, you can nail the .50 cal+ tones from mid 90s Corrosion of Conformity with it.
can i suggest trying to run global master volume at 12 o'clock and run channel volume low. this made a big difference with my mesa single rec, it lets the power amp breath and sound open. but, it can be a challenge keeping the thing quiet enough.
Jon, have you tried the tone factor extreme realism IRs? Man they are incredible! If you get a chance try them out! When compared to other companies IR packs, you do have to do a little more digging through to find the right brightness and everything but the resonance and realism in these IRs is unbelievable you gotta try em!
Hopefully you can review the V 90w one day. If you can not get it from a friend close by, you can borrow mine if you come to Antwerp 🇧🇪 You are welcome!
I think the main issues with the V is that it's probably the dryest and mid-heaviest of the Mark series amps. I think even Mesa knew this because the Mark VII seems to be a little more saturated and a bit of cut to the midrange a bit closer to the Mark IV. The V is still a pretty cool amp if you can figure out how to dial it in though, but I definitely lean closer to the III, IV, and VII.
There was an interview at some point where they said the IIC+ mode in the Mark V is actually modelled on Doug from Mesa's favorite non-EQ IIC+ combo. He's not a metal player and that's why it sounds that way. The non-EQ ones have a difference in one component that gives them less bass and less saturation than the EQ models. The IIC+ mode in the VII seems to have been redone more toward that Metallica or JP type of thing.
I took this tip and used it on my FM3. Been wanting to make a MK V profile for so long, but had such a hard time dialing it in. This video helped me so much already, and I used the ML Allmighty IR I bought years ago and forgot all about, such a good IR... This channel has become my go to for tips and tricks, this goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks :D Keep up the good work, this channel is one of my all time favorite gear channels. PS your riffs are always so F****** sick!
Uh oh, you're not finished yet.... trip on this... I put a JHS - Little Black Amp Box, in my effects loop and that will allow you to turn the amp up to the 30% (+/-) position which opens this amp up. The JHS works as a Master Volume for room play. Give it a try and see many more intense power options. Get ready to mess with the dials again...lol
I have a Mark V 25 and i love it but it developed a rumbling sound )tubes are fine) and i've been told that it may be leaky caps or something. So now if i want to use it i need to pay probably a couple to a few hundred dollars to get it fixed to use it. Blah.
I'm going to get flamed for this..but so be it. Keith Merrow once said to Ola..why have a bunch of different amps if your going to dial them all in to the same sound? Enough said.🥷

I feel like this video must have been buried if it was released 10 days ago. Sometime the RUclips algorithm is BS. Great work John
It's not live yet as of right now. Only people who visit my webstore can watch it ;)
On my Mark V I drop the 6600 slider to control the ice pick and get it close to earlier Marks . Thank to ML Sound Labs for that great tip.

You should get the full Mark V. Been my only high gain amp for the past 13 years

yeah 6.6k is pretty harsh on the power amp. When I played a Mark V I would leave it flat or knock it back a little bit.
@@UseTheSupeRsonicdepends if you have it in pentode or triode tho, on pentode I pull it back, but on triode it’s better to bump it up again.
now the hardest part, never touching the knobs again 😄 really nice tones here Jon, the intro track was ferocious 🤘
My 2 year old tinkers with the knobs while im gone... My precious tones are gone!!! i just have to laugh, someday it'll be hers anyway.
Nice work man, the attack on the snare drum in intro track is good , nice and crisp and punchy
I like that you miced up the cab and also cut in the mic in the room sound. 👍🏽
Low end on that tone sounds great. Dialed it in great
No captures for Tonex!?

Speaking of the Mark V:25...running that through a Fryette Power Station (50 watts).......Definitely gives the 25 that Boost ....and more!
For some reason always loved the sound of a Mark V or Dual Rec blended with another amp. On their own I was never a fan. Great video 🤘
Great tone, as always 😊 You should make an IR of that Engl cab, would buy in a blink. It's so mean and heavy 😁❤️
Jon be having freak offs with amplifiers!
awesome job as always
Those are great with scooped speakers like seventy 80, greenbacks, G12V, DV77, G12M65 etc

Does the LTD have any neck dive?
This amp owm ME untill i die, its a beast! 💥

Killer tones as always.
Added a Fryette PS 50watts with the Mark V:25 ...OMG. NO problems with a loud drummer....lol
Bravo, that's sounds amazing, could we have the same version but for Tone X please? Cool ;-)
Fortin 33 is the key to get sick tones

He does it so effortlessly too! Like he could be napping and shredding at the same time!
Put a lot of time in on a 25w, but the 80w is worth the price just for the Tweed mode. Mid control turns into a Gain pot. Neat.
that happens w 35w also but tweed mode woulda been nice
01:00 RIPS !!!

so what oclock is that on master vol??
Oh i am sure you can get the great tone from any device
If you want to try Mark V25w let me know dude !
Sick.
I have a Mark V 25 and i love it but it developed a rumbling sound )tubes are fine) and i've been told that it may be leaky caps or something. So now if i want to use it i need to pay probably a couple to a few hundred dollars to get it fixed to use it. Blah.
That's a shame....
You get the best tones out of your amps. What are your feelings about EL84s and the perceived lack of tight bottom end or is that nonsense?
If you crank EL84 tubes they'll compress sooner, but if you have 4 of them like in this one, it has plenty of headroom and plenty of bottom end
low lows, low to mid mids, high highs. it's super simple
Nah not for me
I'm going to get flamed for this..but so be it. Keith Merrow once said to Ola..why have a bunch of different amps if your going to dial them all in to the same sound? Enough said.🥷
