I've cooked all over with Trangia for most of 40 years. Yes, a lot has come and gone but I recall -36 in the Antarctic the Trangia was the go to cooker, nothing stuffed up, blocked or failed. Yes the wind shield and your fine. Never have I enjoyed videos as Your Spot Paul Messner, rite at home mate. thankyou. Jim Outback of Australia.
I've wondered if it was worth the weight loss, at the expense of functionality, to not bring the full Trangia storm base and top. Maybe with just one pot. I have the anodized version so it doesn't weigh much. It would be heavier but there would be no fussing with tent pegs and windshields. That's not a bad idea, but worth it..?
@@peterbyrne652 with stormcooker the kettle is lighter option, dont have to bring potgrips and pan/lid.
@@bcamping1 Good point, however you can't eat from the kettle. Presumably you boil the water to pour it into something? If it's just rehydrating food your would be fine with the kettle, but if need a plate, or bowl with your kettle, you've made up for the potgrips and pan/lid. With the pot you can boil and eat from it. It depends on what you are doing. Personally I use rehydrated meals from the grocery, that need a pot, as they are much cheaper than the 'hiking' ones which act as a 'pot'; and the kettle is perfect for those as you mention.
@@peterbyrne652 😅 I have eaten from the kettle a couple times. Last time I had a cup of noodles but boiled some wiener dogs in the kettle and ate them with fork.
my first Trangia was bought for me as an 18th birthday present - I'm 55 this year and still use it ! The only part I've had to buy is a new rubber seal for the burner. I do have other stoves but go back to my Trangias regularly as they are just brilliant. Nice video - thank you.
Nice to see the Trangia used and with a smaller arrangement. Makes it lighter and smaller for backpacking.
When i was in the army in northern Sweden we had no problem using the trangia alcohol stove in temps around -35 Celsius. We had the stove in our pocket close to the body and when lighting it we used several matches and let them burn up in the stove one by one.
I first used a Trangia as an 18 yo naval recruit on a survival course in the Brecon Beacons in the 70s. Thought they were a bit meh and old school. After over 40 years of camping and using just about everything (except a Jetboil) I've now gone full circle and use my Trangia gear more than anything else. I've really come to appreciate how good Trangia products are and the 27 cook set is now my go to system. When I think of all the money I've spent over the years on gear that's now either in the bin or sold, when really all I should have bought as an 18 year old was a Trangia 27 . . . . and I'm very confident that if I had, I would have saved myself hundreds of pounds and it'd still be going strong now. Ho hum, we live and learn.
This makes me want a Trangia triangle ...I've had my (27) for over 30 years and keep going back to it.
I can understand not liking campfires where you are, but I can't imagine so much camping with so few campfires. I'm glad I live where there are so many good opportunities for them, either existing authorized fire pits, or an easy way to do it without leaving a noticeable trace, and without violating rules.
there are so many people wild camping now days its not very responsible to promote having open fires, to many numptys
I ditched the old Trangia burner many years ago, now I only use the Trangia Gas Burner with the Trangia Stove 27-21 UL-D, I only use the largest pan and the 0.6L kettle, the perfect set for me in my 40+ years of outdoor living, it is so compact you can have every thing packed inside plus some extras ! Best ever Stove !!! It have never let me down, it cannot tilt, very difficult to break anything.
Love the use of the soldering mat. Thanks for teaching. Cheers
If you're still using the trangia meths burner, invest in the winter kit for it. It's an attachment that fits underneath the burner with a piece of gauze on it, put a few drops of meths on it and set light to it, it pre-warms your meths and burner making it much easier to light and quicker to bloom.
Why have I never thought of a soldering mat before! Good video mate. ATB
Great idea!
Except for the wind you guys are damn lucky, in the States if I went to bed with steak and a Snickers bar in my tent I ‘d wake up as Bear Burrito.
Snickers bar is going back to the real name MARATHON bar like it was 30yr ago 🤣👍
Different ball game in the UK James .
It’s only a small island and you’re never more than 80 miles from the sea plus it’s not noted for its bear or wolf population lol
Can get a little nippy I spent a week on a deserted Scottish Island ( Texa ) in mid winter armed with just a 3” Opinel knife and fire stick as part of a training.
The explorer Ranulph Fiennes cut his teeth hiking in the UK and has traversed the north and south poles more than once so it’s a good place to learn and enjoy.
Lol....bear cuisine
In New Zealand we can get possums in our tents. We have to be careful about our food too, but we are glad to have no bears!
I am going to get some of the wire mesh lined grub bags to keep the possums and rodents out of my food.
We also have our food hung up in huts, and sometimes right beside us in the tent, or in a possum proof container overnight.
@@GypsyGirl317 I’ve had issues with raccoons unzipping the tent and sticking a paw in to grab whatever they can. Ever since I was a kid I started using an old metal clip style shower curtain ring to slip through the door zipper pulls to work as a lock. We are lucky to have only Black Bears on the east coast. They’re more of a nuisance than a threat not being as huge or as aggressive as the Browns. Still big and scary to meet in the dark. Of my 5 or so up close and personal bear encounters only one was at night and it cured me of my tendency to cook in camp.
Hilleberg tents are the best. Can stand any storm.
Thanks to you mate and your videos I’ve been watching during all the lockdowns , i have decided to give wild camping a go. It’s looks so stress relieving and relaxed. I’ve got the basics etc
"All I ask for, at the end, is a last long resting place by the side of Innominate Tarn, on Haystacks, where the water gently laps the gravelly shore and the heather blooms and Pillar and Gable keep unfailing watch. A quiet place, a lonely place. I shall go to it, for the last time, and be carried: someone who knew me in life will take me and empty me out of a little box and leave me there alone. And if you, dear reader, should get a bit of grit in your boot as you are crossing Haystacks in the years to come, please treat it with respect. It might be me."
~ Alfred Wainwright - from "Memoirs of a Fellwalker" (1990)
Rainy Sand How lovely. A spiritual person. 🙏
This is the best thing I read in a long time. Cheers
These videos are just gems. Yet again, thankyou!
Glad you liked it
Actually I do live close to the Hilleberg office too. Jämtland is great having both Hilleberg and Trangia. Oh, and Lundhags of course. 👌💖
I keep my trangia fully fueled in my pocket in cold weather 😉
Paul I am going to tell you that you should sit your trangia ring on the top of your trangia triangle as it can be done and the meth burner underneath in your cooker and you can put a small cup/pot safely on top of your triangle cooker plz do try it out for safety inside your Hilleberg tent vestibule 😉👍
GREAT VIDEO I LOVE these hiking videos when they cook with real food!
Another good video Paul. Camping in bear country, we tend to cook well away from our tent so as not to smell like a food source. Not a concern in sheep country... 🤣
Thank you for a wonderful tour of a place I will never get to at my age. Looked great, keep trucking!
One of my favourite camper 💔 loads of love from india
enjoy watching you cook in front of your tent! Thanks Paul for sharing us this awesome video!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Best wishes Paul
Great show Paul. I'm feeling homesick. Over here ( Niagara Falls)the breakfast of champions is left over pizza. I think you got it right with bacon, mushrooms steak and asparagus. Maybe some black pudding (called blood pudding here) would have elevated to the next level
May I suggest a hip flask of your favorite scotch instead of the beers. Less weight, The good news is Moroccan Woodbines are now legal in Canadian provincial park campsites. Not to be wasted as wicks for Trangia stoves ( destined for the Camping Hall of Fame)
Keep up the good work. Need more Big Girl references.... no offence girls.
Thanks for watching Steve. I do like the odd dram of scotch and it would be my choice for longer hikes. That said you can't beat a cold beer. Best wishes from the UK. Paul
Отличная прогулка!
Done Haystacks among many other peaks over the years, I've done Helvellyn 3 times and Scafel Pike, Pavy Arc, Blencathra off sharp edge, Great and Green Gable, Sheffield Dodd and Pike some other walks like Ingram valley, high force, cheviots, Kielder. and a couple of Munroe's in Scotland.
Lovely scenery and music! Thank you!
Hi Paul,
absolutely loving your videos, barely a cup of coffee goes by without me watching these!
I've no problems with these being monetised, as long as the ads are well placed in the video and you invest the income in more kit and trips out 😁😁😁.
Once again thanks for making some great content.
That is so beautiful up there in the Lakes. Makes my heart leap to see the views. My last trip there - up Scafell Pike, in a heat wave.
Best stoves in the world ...
Came across your videos when searching for stoves to purchase. So glad I did, keeping me entertained and giving me the bug to get into wild camping
Great vid mate. If you snap the asparagus it will naturally break at the tender/woody junction.
Nice Camp 👍 .. thanks.
I use the Trangia Mini Cook Set. Has a nice sized pot, frying pan and pot / pan holder with a wind shield. Packs away nicely too 😊.
I use a mini too. However, in cold weather, I find it consumes more fuel than I'd like. I tend to pitch up near woodland, and use a woodmans stove, feeding it with twigs and my trangia as a backup if it's too wet. I have to say, I've seen a few of Paul's videos, the lake district looks stunning.
An additional tip for you is to put a teaspoon of water into the meths. This will prevent your cooking pot from going black with carbon smoke. The hydro carbon smoke leaves a yellow tinge on the cooking pot which will be easier to clean off than the carbon deposits.
Live long Mr Wainwright. God bless you xxxx
I love watching your vids as you try lots of different combinations of kit. I personally use a Triangia but i use the complete set, cant remember if its the 25 or 27 but its for one person. Kettle fits inside bowls and stove fits inside kettle.I will swap out my frying pan for this non stick version you are using and that foldable cup looks bang on. Fair play for cooking lying down, my old bones protest at that!!
The soldering mat is a good idea.
I love my Trangia. It did the C2C with us. Packing up so small it just works so well but yeah... I've seen people use stoves as tent heaters and they're mad. Spilling alcohol is a hazard that just comes with the territory, a non-issue if you're sensible.
For anyone reading I thought I'd share my favourite trail food. It sounds like it won't work or will be destroyed before you can get to it but Primula cheese (cheese that comes in a tube like toothpaste), chorizo and Rivita. It's tasty, calorie dense and satisfying whilst being super easy to prep, you can easily stop, squeeze some cheese out, use a pocket knife to slice the chorizo and off you go! Again, we did the C2C with just that and M&M/fruit/nut trailmix with the occasional treat from pub meals.
Love the old trangia. With now being in Canada, I keep a biolite stove in the car as my emergency backup- I never have to buy fuel for it, and cooked a meal for 4 with a 3’ x 1” stick I found next to the picnic table, damn that bacon was good. Ok its slower than an msr, but I never run of gas. By the way one of Ray Mears Rockies vids was filmed just down the road from me. Just on the ghost river.
Oh the meals I have made with my Swiss Army Knife!!! THat Trangia kit looks good...
That is what you call a proper breakfast. Great video as always plenty of useful tips
Cheers Dessie. Glad you enjoyed the video
Proper mountains, indeed.
I like that tip of rolling a wick for the stove. If an ordinary match won't light the Trangia burner, I use so-called windproof matches (they have a whole load of extra phosphorus, so they tend to flare for about fifteen seconds, and I always used to carry about half a dozen with me).
On one occasion at a campsite, one of my mates had brought a primus stove. But we couldn't get the meths in the priming pan to light because it was too cold. I happened to have with me some alcohol jelly (does anyone else remember the Centreforge mini cook set?), and we added a blob of that to the priming pan. It lit OK, and, over the course of the next five minutes, the meths in the priming pan gradually started burning. It even burned long enough to get the mantle hot enough to vaporise the paraffin when he started pumping. And once a primus is going, it's a fantastic stove. I wouldn't ever want to backpack with one, though. Or use it inside the tent.
If ever I'm cooking in the vestibule, I always leave the flysheet flap open unless there's actual rain or snow coming down.
I love the vids paul hope all is well. Doin a binge watch today trying to learn few extra tips.thanks for your videos mate.
Hi Paul, considering getting into hiking/camping again since taken as a little kid in the lakes. So thanks for your videos as providing me with lots of inspiration and knowledge to get started.
I’d probably just keep it simple with boil in a bag food but this could be a nice treat now and again. My question is like to have seen is how you clean/pack the oily pan back up in your bag? Thanks mate
Love the Sunderland part 😂
I camped on Fleetwith Pike and did the walk down Haystacks to Bittermere a couple of months ago. I never get bored of that area.
My favourite region in the lakes. It's awesome. Thanks for watching
Such a good video with loads of great Trangia stove tips and advice from 11:21 Thanks also for advocating 'Leave No Trace' in your videos, too.
Glad you enjoyed it
oh yes. the best wild camping video ive seen..i really must get out and do it..i fish in some wild rivers and will try and stay over on my next trip..
For heat in the tent, I've got hand warmers & hot water bottle. A good ruby murray for internal warmth. As a rotund lad I keep warm for a while, plus being a lad from Yorks/Lancs boarder I don't feel the cold as much as many.
Really enjoyed this*Thank you for sharing :-) loved those moody sky's*
this last comment was made for hilleberg stormy time :-) Really enjoying your posts*Doing a little catch-up on your posts. Thanks for sharing :-)
:-) the new porridge
Glad you liked it
I have the same collapsible cup. I use it as a bowl for rice etc. Now I want the Trangia triangle for the Biolite 2 to give my cast iron pans some room above the flame, as well as more stability for larger pots.
Wow that was fabulous. I've never cooked a steak before. 👍😎🇨🇦
get this man a pocket rocket 2
Totally agree with the tea lights or any candle as they're paraffin which is super carcinogenic but a co² detector isn't expensive and I have one for my hot tent/log burner set up
Try using wooden(bamboo) chopsticks for your cooking - moving, flipping, stirring, scramble eggs, picking individual items, even use to eat with, etc.
Nothing wrong with Keeping the disposal chopsticks. Just stick it in the dishwasher.
Yeah but you have to learn how to eat with the frustrating things. 😖
@@maxsparks5183 yep, that's true.
my friend's little 6yr old learnt all by herself to use chopsticks. Guess some gets frustrated whilst others just cracks on with it.
Another fantastic inspiring video paul. Really enjoy your films i worked in keswick for a few yrs and often still walk in the langdales but now live in north yorks. Keep em coming
Ps that brekky made me starving
Good review Paul, looks a good bit of kit, and you done a good job testing it, lovely place as well, thanks for sharing see you next time 👍
If you buy the Trangia pan stand you can use it with the Trangia triangle stove. It lets you put smaller cups etc on top and works with the storm cooker as well. I have one and use it extensively. I never thought to get a soldering mat to use to insulate the cooker. I'm of to see if I can get one now. brilliant idea.
Thanks for the tip Ian. I'll check them out. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
Great video Paul. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Nice to meet you.
Very nice view and great partner.
I thought the tent was like heaven.
Great vid Paul.👍👍👍
Thanks Craig.
Nice vid again Paul, I'm playing RUclips catch up lol. I've never been to that tarn but I've now been convinced to visit. Triangle is an epic stove, it works wonders. A little tip for hot handles, use some 6mm rubber tube, very heat resistant. I've got a bit spare you can have. Speak soon mate, Atb.
Cheers Dave. It's well worth a trip up. That tube sounds just what I'm after thank you. I do like the simplicity of an alcohol stove. I'm not in a rush so boil times are irrelevant to me most of the time. Atb Paul
Cob is correct ✔️
I dont understand how you don't have way more subscribers. What the hell is up with RUclips!? If I ever need advice on tarps and pitches I ALWAYS come to your channel. Brilliant video mate. So jealous .
brilliant record of your adventures! paul you make it all look so easy camping in the cold and the film editing..all of it ...very competent guy..jealous me
Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos 👍
Great video. That steak looked nice. What a way to start the day.
Absolutely fantastic video
It's much easier to light the alcohol burner if you keep it in ( in a bag ) your pocket for warmth.... and then light a twig and use that to ignite the burner
There is a winter base from Trangia that is basically a pre-heater. The other approach, and you have to be careful, is to put a bit on the outside rim, and light the burner itself on fire. This is fine in winter, as you should be lighting on snow, but use caution. I've done this before and it will work in a pinch.
Good video, you just need to emphasise the need to leave no trace when wild camping so it can continue. Some good tips.
I have done in many videos. I try and do things a little different in each so people aren't watching exactly the same. You make a very important point though about leave no trace. ATB
Looks beautiful and great hiking in england
I plan to do some cycle touring in Europe at the end of the summer season and had my eye on the Hilleburg Nammatj 2GT..Just started to enjoy watching your vids Paul..Keep them coming!
Brilliant mate
And wow what a breakie lush
My idea is to use my trangia stove, thanks for the tip on lighting in cold weather. Great camp mate, made me hungry though.. ;)
Glad you enjoyed it. sorry for causing hunger pains haha. Best wishes Paul
Look at the angled jetflame lighters. Small & light and perfect for lighting trangias without burning your fingers.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PROF-ANGLED-Jet-Flame-Lighter-Windproof-Blue-Turbo-Flame-Refillable-Tank-Lid/251756708513?hash=item3a9dde82a1:m:m_539LvfXBkRS9NN4e8gRJg
I carry a " u " made of bent clothesline wire on top of the Trangia Triangle to hold my mug
If you use a small triangle file to make small grooves in the top of the stove the pegs or the U shaped mug holder will remain stable
When you're done with the frying pan add water to the warm pan to ease cleanup
That is a great tip. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes. Paul
great vid Paul thank you matey :-)
Brilliant video again, always a pleasure to watch your vids, can't wait to get out myself hope lockdown will be over soon.👍🙂
Hey Paul, you should do affiliate codes so you can actually get something back for all these great recommendations. I bought the Trangia Frypan and the Trekology pillow from watching your videos. Will by using the frypan this spring on hikes. Been using it at home to try it out, fabulous for making pancakes btw.... so good the non stick quality in excellent..... so It looks like I will have a few Pancakes and Bacon breakfasts on the trial - :)
I do use affiliatecodes now. thanks
I'm loving your vids and better with a buddy with same mind set..👍
Hiking novice here. Your videos are great! Helping me alot right now as I try to gear up for me and my daughter. The one thing I noticed though. You pack all that great kit but never bring a storm lighter?!
another lovely video thanks.
That landscape reminds me of the Beartooths in Montana. High and cold area. The only difference is there you may come across mountain goat or maybe a grizzly.
Beautiful video. Keep it up love!
Thanks my little chicken. ATB Dad x 👍
Beautiful location for a quick overnighter. Must be nice to not have to worry about bears, wolves or cougars. Of course, you have to be careful not to get too close to the Grimpen Mire!
Great video.... I am off to Amazon or ebay now to become the proud owner of a foldable cup..I have been using Trangia for years, great piece of kit. Again really enjoyed watching the video, almost felt as though I was there....
Just realised your from Sheffield. Good man 👍 me too.
Thanks!
Thank you for this. I really appreciate it. Best wishes. Paul.
Steak and asparagus.....that's a man's breakfast! 👌
Steak on a fry pan, great flavour :)
What a great way to start the day. Steak for breakfast 😉
Trangia is falling behind on the Jetboil game.
Paul very nice video and music too.! Thx buddy for sharing video, and keep going! I shoot huge LIKE ..Greetings from Canada! 😉 😊 😋 😎
Loving it!
That pocket Rocket heats well But... the noise is too annoying for me. All in all I Iove the quiet and stability of my Trangia 25... especially in a wind situation.
What do you think chaps... that sheep running about looked pretty tasty... 🐏. Yup... a Trangia could handle that. 😝🤤🥣🍖
always great, thanks for uploading.
Cheers mate. Thanks for watching
That looked an amazing trip out. I'm struggling to find one of those Trangia triangles to buy. Out of stock everywhere in UK.
Great video Paul. Quite extraordinary breakfast which looks good. Great trick to start the Trangia in cold weather, I usually just drop a matchstick in, works fine as well.
See you outdoors.
Forrestechs
I like the cross pieces you can get for the alcohol stoves
Bio ethanol only produces Carbon dioxide which is less dangerous than monoxide. It appears to burn hotter so better for heating water. Paul have you checked out carbon felt mod for Trangia’s even if you knock over the stove no fuel spills so much safer to use
