- This is our camping video of us wild camping in a storm. Storm Eunice came shortly after Storm Dudley and we took the opportunity to wild camp in a storm and test out all our camping gear. We took every precaution including in-depth planning and taking the new Garmin inReach Mini 2 and lots of winter backpacking gear.
We went hiking up to the summit of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia via the Minffordd Path. We were welcomed by snow and ice and of course the freezing cold strong winds from the storm. After summiting we got the rest of our camping kit from the car and made our way back up the mountain to go camping in a storm.

I used my Hilleberg Soulo tent. This is a true 4 season tent capable of withstanding high winds, rain and storms. It didn't let me down. Camping in heavy rain and camping in strong winds is possible if you've got a decent backpacking tent, pitch your tent in a position with some shelter and peg it down properly and use all the guy lines too.
Please only go wild camping in strong winds if you have the skills, experience and gear to see you through. I would recommend camping in groups if you go wild camping in heavy rain as if some of your backpacking kit fails your friends can help you out.
I took most of my hiking and camping footage when the storm was momentarily easing to assist with audio and visual quality. I have also filtered some of the background rain and wind noise too. However, I can assure you the storm was battering us throughout most parts of both days and certainly the majority of the night. This is a genuine video, not one of those solo 'camping in strong winds' videos where the whole wild camping video is acted out from start to finish.

I synced my Garmin Instinct 2 watch with Garmin Connect and uploaded the hiking data to my Strava account. On Day 1 we completed a 9.52 mile hike with 4101ft of elevation and 4h 48m of moving time (average 2mph).

That is some serious wild camping, and quite a lovely dinner to contrast the weather! Good points on the woodland being a substantial risk - as a hammocker looking to try a tent again, the arguments people give about being able to site a hammock more easily than a tent fall flat; a bit of wonky ground under a tent won't kill you, but tree fall will! Much greater risk when hammocking with your placement given you basically have to be amongst trees.
Yes, there’s a time and a place for everything but I’m a big no to hammocks on a windy day!

How come all your gear looks brand spanking new. I've got a garmin in reach mini therefore I can camp up the mountain in the worst storm for 30 yrs. I think you guys got lucky it could have gone really tits up.

We didn't get lucky, we were prepared for the worst and could have stayed up there another night if we were forced to. Anything is achievable if you properly plan, have the rights skills, experience and knowledge and have the right gear.
Some are just better at taking care of their gear, mate. :p I scrape my teflon pans with a long titanium spoon and ask myself "How come the nonsticky stuff flake off?" 🤣
Great video and some sound advice. The further up, windier and the tougher the conditions you want to experience, then the money you need to spend to keep you safe rises too. Practice at the bottom of the hill (or even your garden) with your gear in the sun, wind and rain, then you stand more chance of finding, not only the lens cap for your camera, or bottle opener, but also your way back down... 👍

The problem with all dome tents is that you can't keep the door open for ventilation because the rain would get in, you'd think they'd make them with a simple porch that overhangs the open door.
A lot of dome tents (like this) have a little hood over the door. It works well if the rain is coming from the opposite site.
Another thing- is there such a thing as a completely freestanding tent (dome or otherwise) that can be pitched on rocky ground that's too hard for pegs to go in?

Andy, I do the same on a one nighter. I cook my rib-eye in butter rather then oil and I add broccoli and mushrooms as well as the rice. Take a few pieces of tin foil - acts as lids on pans and to wrap cooked food to kept it hot whilst other magic goes on the burner. I use nalgene containers for butter and prepared garlic as well as for my mustard etc etc
You’re making me feel hungry! You can’t beat proper cooking on the mountain.

Your lines are almost all way too loose. It actually shows how good that tent is that it just stood there and took it anyway.

That's some shift you put in Andy. I found cadair Idris one of the tougher mountains so to complete the loop and then go back up to the lake is brilliant!

Have a Soulo BL. It is amazing how strong the structure is even without guylines. Gonna try double poling the side pole soon to see what difference it makes. You may say that it is too heavy, but actually it feels quite light compared to the Tarra I used to lug around.

i did my very first wild camp video by the lake at cadair idris and i salute you for walking the horse shoe with a pack on your back and then going back down to the car park to head back up to the lake again, sucker for punishment lol, its a killer hike from the car park to the lake, im considering cadair this weekend failing that it will be the ogwen valley somewhere, got a new scarp 1 to test

Cader Idris is probably my favourite hike of the last year. Actually I went twice in the space of a few weeks. First time the weather was bad, with visibility of just a few metres from Llyn Cau up, and I was hiking solo, so I decided to hike just to Llyn Cau and return to the car.
That whet my appetite, so the first opportunity I got to go back was just a few weeks later, on a beautifully clear day, following the Minffordd Path circuit. At pretty much every point on the way round there were spectacular views for miles. I ended up taking 1.5hrs longer than expected, simply because I kept stopping to take it all in.
I tell you what, though. I have a terrible fear of heights, and that last 20 metres ascent to the trig point took a bit of focus to do, with sheer drops on either side!!!
Well done, mate. The Mrs even sat and watched a bit of this viddy with me, a compliment in itself (she usually just shuts the door on me 😆).

Cadair is my local - lovely but deadly at times, especially when it’s foggy windy or wet
It’s a good sleep in the shelter at the top too
That shelter was getting battered when we were up there. We thought the roof was going to come off! However, it did help us take a quick break from the sub-zero gale-force wind chill. Very jealous, wish I lived closer.

Great video Andy, can't believe how well the tent stood up in that weather, bet you're glad to be home now haha. Not able to afford a decent tent right now but as soon as I can put some money away for one I'm going to get myself back out camping.

@@BackpackingUK Thanks Andy, I saw your video a while ago on the Cloud Peak 2 and it's similar to the Allak 2, which I like the design of. It's still 130+ on AliExpress without the shipping cost. Still want to save up for that though. Thanks for the reply.
Hoqus, a few years ago I bought a cloud peak 2 and bought some heavier duty poles to swop out the standard ones. I would peg the fly sheet using longer cords down closer to the ground. It transformed the tent. I had it above the tree line in high winds (60mph) and snow on several occasions - the tent survived exceptionally well with me and my dog. Now I’m able to afford more I’ve got myself a single skin Crux and a zpacks triplex. Both fab tents tho’ very pricey. I would also look at a one of the vango’s as they really offer good sturdy value.

Looked a great hike and camp some pretty horrendous weather.but I was thinking hmm that's a lot of expensive gear I'm all for getting bargains but paying for proven expensive gear pays off especially in wild winter weather cheap gear gets you by in summer.the Garmin mini is ok but the monthly subscription seems a bit steep
I’m on the Garmin tariff that you can stop and start. It’s worth the money just so I can text the other half and keep her happy whilst I’m away! 😁

When I started getting into hiking, I invested in a watch with maps, cos I can get lost in a car park! But in a car in fine, I'm just weird. I got the Suunto 9, wish I got the baro though as it tells you when the weather is changing and storms are due. But was out my price range 🥴

Good work. One pro tip : don't use olive oil for searing steak , the smoke point is actually quite low . Soybean or canola oil will work much better

great video bro , storm videos are awesome , people like to see you out of yoru comfort zone , may i suggest you show yourself setting up camp also ? then cooking your food as well , and also packing down the next day

Not particularly responsible putting yourself in a potentially situation where you expect someone on the end of Garmin Inreach to put themselves in danger to bail you out as your last resort. Perhaps you missed the news report about the Ambleside mountain rescue person who had life changing injuries rescuing a wild camper. If you put yourself in that situation it’s down to you to self evacuate not expect other to risk there lives from a preventable situation. This won’t be a popular observation by some but I think it needs saying

The Garmin inReach SOS button is supposed to be an absolute last resort. People get into trouble on hot sunny days too and the MRT are called. Snowdonia, The Lakes, they’re all places that are potentially dangerous. At least I’m showing people how to do it responsibly and safely. You’ll never stop people doing what they want to do!
Fair enough but common sense would suggest a sunny day is less dangerous than intentionally going up a mountain in what was the worst predicted storm in 30 years with a danger to life advisory... That said good luck with your future adventures! 🤙
You have to remember its used in a life saving situation (or should be), SAR members are generally volunteers or in a job in which they know what they are signing up for. I literally see it used for just that here in the Canadian back country, I swear by my Zoleo and wouldn’t go anywhere in the back country without it.
I think you have to have a scale of what life-threatening is. Mostly people get into difficulty from having the wrong gear for the conditions. If you have the right gear then its less risky. Nothing wrong with this video as he has the right gear and right mindset. What would be wrong would be going out in jeans and a £50 tent from argos.

No, not at all but I really look after my boots and NikWax them after every time they get wet. My mate's Berghaus boots were waterlogged halfway through Day 1!

Yes, but the Sea to Summit ones are hard wearing. I think the set is £3.50 including a knife, fork, spoon and carabiner.
why take so much food to be COOKED and packaging etc ? pre cook a nice meal and just WARM it up. less shit to carry up and down and if the shit hits the fan you have meal ready to eat rather than raw meat etc .
Because it's better than being bored, sitting in a tent in the wind and rain eating pre-cooked food!
