I feel even the criticism of the combat & gameplay was exaggerated. It's pretty addictive in the higher difficulties, especially getting the timing right.

      Criminally underrated
The way the story turned you against the "good guys" eventually leading you to the final boss fight against the barbarian chick, the whole set up through the entire game was a fight you didn't want but had to do because "that's the way things are."

@@cartermoth6447 I'm trying to think about why some gamers just don't realize That it's not just the graphics that make a good game and that there are other elements that come in to play. E.g. Emotion, timing, Story, Options, Creativity, Consequences, Rewards, Etc... If People don't understand what I mean Then They should look at small games that don't have the best graphics like Undertale, It's graphics aren't the best but graphics isn't always what you need to pay attention to, sometimes you have to pay attention to the amount of control you have over your character. Sometimes games with bad graphics may have an edge somewhere else like music and storytelling.

Sometimes I think companies just waste too much dev time/resources on graphics while they could've improve or come up with more fun mechanics. the order is kind of the odd one out because aside from being short. bugs were almost non existent. gunplay was very consistent and competent. movement was fluid and I rarely found my guy going anywhere other than where I wanted him, especially when moving around cover. but in reality the game isn't much shorter than your average resident evil, which I think it gets unfairly judged by. and being a shorter game makes it a perfect Saturday replay. that you can easily replay just to have fun and experience again. it also didn't overstay it's welcome. it came, it did its thing, and then moved on. they didn't try to keep forcing it on us, even though I think anyone would have gladly taken more. I'm really hoping sony is gonna bring a sequel. if they just did everything the same and just added more. it'd be a great ps5 exclusive. especially if they just keep the engine the same, and just improve and adjust for ps5. imagine if they added Ray tracing, lighting improvements. also gave us the 120hz and 1080p60fps. it's definitely an ace up their sleeve if they decide to commit and do it right. couple it with a remastered ps5 copy of 1886 for ps5 with all the new improvements made to the engine for ps5. it'd be an easy remaster. and 10 free hours of additional content or a free upgrade for anyone who has the base game already.
killzone is also another exception. I need to replay it on ps5 because it's supposedly very nice. but it's another game where they could easily launch it for ps5 and have another great IP. it really makes me hope they do, because the games were great.

Yeah it was short but that was fine with me because of the story and gameplay… there were moments where a cutscene ended and I would just stand there waiting for the scene to continue but I didn’t realize that I was actually playing again because the graphics were so good for the time.. one of my favorite games tbh

Well - When I first heard of Anthem and saw some clips from it (not knowing it was no actual gameplay at all), I was hyped for it too. When I learned it would be a Game As Service always on-line only type of game, my interest plummeted from red-hot to the absolute zero level in an instance. From that moment on I knew the game was doomed from the start. And I was, of course, right in thinking that.
Bioware is (or actually was) great with single player games, and should have stayed with that type of game. What's more - Mass Effect Andromeda was cut short and abandoned to make that failure of a Anthem GAS garbage. In stead of a failed Anthem they could have made a superb Mass Effect Andromeda. The potential was absolutely there, but they completely butchered that game to have resources enough for Anthem. And look at the sad lifeless ruins that remain after that decision.

I'm one of those who liked The Order 1886, especially since I was dreading the 100 hour long games that kept getting more and more bloated. I wonder if it would've done better had they priced it at $40 or $30 out of the gate and later kept it as a $20 or $10 game. It had a lot of potential and the presentation was stellar at the time.
As for the Knack games, they were good enough, especially for something to play with kids like a Mario game but the drawn out story in my opinion didn't help. The story should've been kept very short and sweet "here's the plot" exposition in 30 seconds and move on. Kind of how the older Mario games start with a quick scene (e.g. princess is kidnapped, Mario is missing, Yoshi has to find Luigi, etc.) and then you're playing. Instead they kept trying to make it into this epic or classic story that was clearly never going to measure up. Admittedly, the gameplay was also rather simple but it too had potential (unlike the story).

Literally I feel that several games that were released back in 2013/2014 have better graphics than many new games of 2021/2022. I just finished replaying Rage 1, which is considered a commercial failure.
The visuals aged really well for this 2011 game. The environmental design is fantastic, every character has distinct look and animations are lively. And it honestly just plays really well for the most part.
It's biggest issues are some of the bugs that never got fixed, UI was not optimized for mouse and keyboard, level layout is incredibly constricted (it's a corridor shooter with overworld that is just a maze of corridors you navigate on a car) and worst of all, it very obviously has too much cut content. Moments where future side quests got foreshadowed and never came to be, fabled General Cross who never even appeared to say 1 word before sequel, and finale that is just a gauntlet of mob fights without any named boss fight (where previously there were 3 boss fights in this game).
It is obvious that this game could have been much more, and it looks fantastic despite it's age, but it failed, likely due to development hell, and sequel took franchise into significantly different direction that many fans of the original do not appreciate.

It is quite enjoyable now, but it's not perfect, and I just wanted to point it out in advance so that you go into the game with that in mind and not get irritated when something undesirable happens. At launch, every 10-20 minutes, you'd simply fall through the map - no longer happening, but, like I said, occasionally something scripted fails, such as an NPC getting stuck (rare) or forgetting where it's supposed to go. The latter might happen from time to time, and in this case you can usually get it back to life by bumping into him a few times - again, not something that'll happen on every mission, but I think that I finished the game in it's fully patched state and it still happened from time to time - Unity is a long game, not like Valhalla, but lots to do and the share of generic filler in the overall amount of content is a lot lower than in pretty much any ACs from Revelations onwards, so definitely worth a playthrough.

As for The Order 1886 - honestly, there were very few things that needed fixing. Basically only one, really - more content. Its biggest weakness, like you said, is the length. Also the 100% repeated (and only) boss fight.
Add more levels, more bosses, and maybe add coop - and it would have been a great game. It still can be Sony's own Gears of War - something that their library could really make use of.
If I was making decisions, I would say - make a co-op sequel at least 15 hours long with minimum 3 distinct bosses. Include a story recap in the beginning, for those who never played the first one. And it'll sell like hot cakes.
I mean, a victorian era coop shooter with steampunk and teslapunk guns versus wherewolves (and add other beasts for variety) - what is not to like?!

I beat it in like 6 or so hours and played with the arena a few more and that was it. Was good but no replayability. As for avengers I'm one of the people who still come back to it from time to time. I thought the story and graphics alone were worth the price. The extra characters and small story content added along with playing missions with friends was just a bonus. The gameplay between characters is very different which gave it more replayability for me because it felt like it switched it up pretty good when changing characters. My one complaint was that you couldn't switch between characters in the middle of a mission like the ultimate alliance games

I love the Ancestors game but I can never play further than changing generation maybe 5 times?
It's just so repetitive to the point where it's better as a solo roleplaying game than an actual survival game, essentially all the game is is you loading in, discovering 2 or 3 locations and then quitting it again.
They also really underdelivered on the crafting system, there's so much room for improvement and it seemed to me the first time playing it like they had way more ideas for features to add like the spiked walls, but they were on a time crunch and cut it short.
Regardless, it's still a pretty good game. Fun to mess around in for a couple of minutes, but extremely repetitive and boring after the first 20 minutes.
I'm hoping the sequel will improve!
