Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects is one of my favourite childhood PS2 games. We had tons of fun with my friend with the VS mode (Daily Bugle rooftop arena could be entirely destroyed). The game also has great music.

Holy shit I thought I'd be the only one I just typed a big paragraph on my own comment on how it's my favourite fighting game and how the bugle is my favourite map cause you can destroy the letters or if you're a strong character like venom you can fully pick them up and throw them at people haha.
No idea why it was on this list, his main point was cause it was random characters he hadn't heard of but there's an entire marvel comic series called rise of the imperfects so if he actually read the book it was based on he'd know who the characters are they're pretty cool characters in my opinion.
Plus yeah the victory music gets stuck in my head whenever I hear it.

I saw that and immediately got stoked, I LOVE games with environmental destruction like that, it often looks ridiculous to have a game pit two basically demi-god level heroes against one another and the environment shows no sign of their having ever been a clash. The game looks sick, we need more like it with today's tech. We need more games with a focus on fun tech to begin with.

I rarely disagree with you guys, but Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects was such a fun and challenging game.
When you play through the game, you get introductions and stories for all the Imperfects and most, if not all, of them are interesting and well thought-out. A decent fighting game with some creative mechanics (Brigade getting stunned by his multiple personalities if you drain his energy) and intriguing, gritty story.

    • @Triattt
      @Triattt 5 месяцев назад +3

It's rather ironic. They're quite right that it makes no sense to just use up almost half of the roster with unknown characters, instead of characters the fans care about, but the imperfects are part of my childhood now, so they're actually characters I presently care about.

    • @PartyUpGaming92
      @PartyUpGaming92 4 месяца назад +3

I liked it. Also if proper research was done the reason there were unknown characters in the game was because Marvel and EA were making a comic about the Imperfects which were released before the game and had the game been more successful they would have gone forward into the comics. So it was a cool idea but the game didn't do well so the imperfect comics were scrapped

It's a bit dumber when you consider the original tales. Many fairy tales weren't exactly rainbows and sunshine to begin with. And what we do learn about it makes it sound like they went the stupidest possible way about it and didn't realise there's versions other than Disney's.
American McGee's Alice and the sequel work because the characters are still in line with their original characterisation, just taken to extremes.

Gotham City Imposters was decent though. It's taking strays for no reason. The movement in that game felt very clean and well put together, especially for 2012. The gun play was pretty okay for the era, nothing top of it's class but it was still fun. Plus it's not like WB scrapped all the beloved Batman games for it. Gotham City Imposters came out in 2012, while Batman: Arkham Origins came out a year later, with development starting shortly after Batman: Arkham City in 2011. Gotham City Imposters was an idea that did not suck and I'm sad that it got referenced to in this video. Even if it didn't directly make the list.

Like make it a Souls-like or some other grimdark type game. Also, the whole Dopey thing could make sense story wise, you could even have some sympathy type cutscene with like a “hodor”/“hold the door” connotation.

Marvel Nemesis was kind of a good idea that was poorly executed. There is nothing wrong about putting in new characters the issue is that they did too many new characters. I do honestly think it would have worked if it was more like a 75%-25% split of known Marvel characters and new characters respectively. The idea of a new group popping up and causing troubles is a good idea and literally standard in comics but again the issue is they had too many new characters. I think there was a total of 20 characters: 10 Marvel and 10 new. I did like most of the new characters so if they did it like 14-6 for 20 characters it would have been better received.

    1) Shadowrun is more than a SNES/Genesis RPG. There were Shadowrun fans looking forward to the 2007 game, and a new IP would have lacked even that hook to draw attention.
    2) While it was originally viewed negatively, time did cause some (idealists?) to wonder if the original direction for Doom 4 would have worked. And it did progress the Doom storyline.
    3) Snow White has received plenty of dark retellings in various forms, of quite varying degrees of quality. People had been hoping for a new American McGee's Alice for decades. Pinocchio has just had a well-received "dark" Dark Souls-style game.
    4) Not a defense, but the thought process behind Marvel Nemesis was probably pretty basic. While EA could only license regular Marvel characters, EA owned the new "Marvel" characters created for the game. They most likely felt making Marvel games was easy money, and they'd end up with both their own "Marvel" characters and the beginnings of a new big franchise.

I second EVERYTHING you said about IPs. I am always skeptical of someone saying they're going to take the IP "in a new direction". Because, unless it's a mascot like Sonic or Pikachu, it begs the question: Why not just make it an original IP? And I suspect the answer, 99% of the time, is "Because we have no faith in this product and don't expect you to buy it otherwise."
It doesn't necessarily mean the game will be bad (for example: Resident Evil 7), but it does betray, to me, a severe lack of faith, either in their product or in their audience. Who they should know by now are skeptical either way and will wait to hear the verdict from the RUclips gamers regardless of whether it's an existing IP or a new one.

4:20 The Rise of the Imperfects cast wasn't even ä bunch of unknowns", they were created SPECIFICALLY for the game. I respect their commitment to the bit in trying to make a good story with OCs. But yeah, they could have
    1. Used less of the space on nobodies and add to their team more villains or "turned" heroes
    2. Add more characters to the roster. Even if they are not in the story, just have em there for the Versus mode. Maybe a bit more barebones than the actual story characters, but to make proper use of the IP.
    3. Pick a more varied roster. Spidey and Venom? Why not use Venom's slot on another fun villain? Elektra and Daredevil? Their stuff was pretty similar (even their missions, and there was another Imperfect female character A LOT like Elektra). One of the Imperfects also had very similar moveset to The Thing. Weird choices that they made...
But i still LOVED that game. Actually tried to start it up a couple weeks ago but the disc is just too dirty/damaged. Twas a sad day.

Alternatives for number 9 since they pretty much did the same thing:
Nosgoth: lets take this storydriven single player franchise where fans are chomping at the bits to get a continuation of the story and turn it into a multiplayer arena fighting game that adds very little to the Legacy of Kain lore. That can only succeed.
Syndicate 2012: lets take this franchise known for dark cyberpunk strategy games and turn it into a shooter. Then act surprised when the fans of the original games aren't interested in it, while newer fans are uninterested because the franchise is so old that people below 20 probably never had heard of it. Also while we are at it release it not long after Deus Ex Human Revolution, another shooter in a cyberpunk setting, the continues an older franchise, but unlike Syndicate it stuck to the original genre so the old fans would be interested in it.

As I've said, I've been in a game before. I haven't been in these particulary, but I can tell you one thing - the games that feel like "bad ideas" are actually focusing on the plot twists. You see, DOOM 3 they are all cool and shooting you. You are being shot. Fail. Start all over again.. But then.. at the very end of the game opponents realise.. that this isn't Call of Duty.. and you didn't even hear them calling you a noob. Shadowrun is just so they want to return to prequal. Cuz it's better. But they don't see what's comming.. I know it takes a long time for the opponents at Marvel Nemesis to realise that they can't be the coolest characters. Don't know the gameplay for Dwarfs, but, either the opponents realise they will get killed by dwarfs OR they realise they are dwarfs. The Star Wars game, if I understand correctly, has a twist that the main character is a robot. AND the gayest character in Star Wars. That gets them. For Metroid Prime, they understand that the main character isn't even the main character the whole game. The plot twist is that they kinda miss the prequal, just like in Shadowrun. Next plot twist is that you want to play GTA after Metroid Prime. And they're police there. In Duke Nukam, plot twist is that they're the pray. And you're a hunter. AND they're endangered species. You just have to end their hope to see their son wedding. The Gamer Girl is what ties the whole thing together. You help the world to see her gameplay. She's the opponents. You control her life. AND she's a girl. As of Escape From Diab.. don't even ask why they're fat. Shenmue were made just for bad reputation. So they don't want to play it. They still eager to know the plot twist, though.. The bonus Star Wars is a KINECT game. When they realise you don't even use a controller, they know it's deep shit when The Force is with you.

Oh Escape From Diab…. So. I have some fun and additional information about that game. When I first heard of it, I was a Masters Student at Michigan State University. I was a major in Communication, but my research interests were in video games and communication. So I took a an elective class in the telecommunication department about Serious Games.
One of the fundamental and pervasive questions throughout that course was “do educational games need to be fun?” The prevailing answer in the academic fields was a resounding “No.” so keep in mind, Escape From Diab was never intended to be fun. Though I feel Falcon makes an excellent and extremely salient point about how it depicts obese people and the characters.
You see… this game was developed by an academic couple at Baylor College. 3 people from my cohort (grad students who start the same year) ended up in Texas. Myself and one other friend ended up in the Ph.D program at UT Austin (I quit and transferred to another school in California after a year.) and one of my close friends ended up moving to Houston for a job working for the couple developing Escape From Diab. The wife was nice most of the time, but the husband especially was a hard core bastard of an ass hole. He contributed to my friends continuous mental decline. After a year she snapped and moved back home. But I know that for anyone hired to work on that project, it was not a pleasant time. In fact, I remember her telling me the couple, husband especially were not open to any criticism of their ideas and implementation.
I should mention my friend specialized in Early Childhood Development and Communication. So they hired her so they could ignore her. The couple developing it just really used it to get constant grant money when Serious Games was an emerging research area. It was a cash cow for grants. It was only tweaked in small amounts for hypothesis testing, but it rarely yielded meaningful changes in behavior of children. It would yield some short term mental changes that were promising but they quickly diminished. Demonstrable behavior changes were all but nonexistent if I recall correctly from what I read on the project a decade ago.
But I think Falcon points an a major issue that probably was brought up but the couple leading development outright dismissed.
*edit* written on an ipad, so forgive a few grammatical mistakes that will be an ass to fix right now.

The marvel one kinda makes sense but in a way to gauge if any obscure marvel heroes would do well popularity wise.
Also a way to get people to know about the obscure ones which could be fun to some peeps

I'm not gonna lie I think a doom game that takes place during the fall of earth, where you're actually fighting on the frontlines of a seemingly hopeless war, witnessing some of the most horrific atrocities imaginable on a global scale sounds awesome. You could still mix in some horror elements in quieter moments similar to how FEAR does it, while providing huge action set pieces. I see the aftermath of the war in doom eternal with the massive tentacles in the sky, obliterated cities and destroyed mech's, and it does make me kind of wish they did a game that actually took place during all the carnage. I kind of hate how it seems to be a common trope in gaming for games to always take place AFTER all the huge epic disasters/wars take place, and you're kind of just trying to pick up the pieces.

It's so weird to me hearing that people didn't like Doom 3. It was my first FPS game, my first horror as well. I got the collectors edition in the metal case when I was around 6 years old and it was one of 7 games my dad got for me. All the games and the Xbox were all bought at a garage sale, we didn't have much money but my dad wanted us to experience gaming like he did with his atari and Sega when he was a kid. Doom 3 was my absolute favorite and the collectors edition came with all the DLC and the original Ultimate Doom and Doom 2. Countless hours were spent playing that game with my dad and my brother when we visit him on the weekends and to this day I still love that game. The only criticism of the game I understand is the Flashlight thing, but all together I love every part of the game and actually wish we could get another Doom in that same more gritty style. I also enjoyed quake 4 for the reason being it was similar in style and on the same engine as Doom 3.

I’ll say this about some of these games that never came to light. Execution is everything and just because something doesn’t read well on paper doesn’t mean it doesn’t translate well to another media. Good stuff on paper like books can make bad movies. Point being shutting down a creatives idea is never a good thing
Wether the idea lands or not we would never know unless they actually took a shot trying to make it happen in the first place

I really loved the Shadowrun game. Obviously it was not a true Shadowrun game, but the gameplay was really fun. That and Brink were some of my favorite online shooters back in the day.

Shadowrun was just fine. Lots of people played it and it had decent reviews. Not the disaster you make it out to be. Also the idea of classes in a shooter was still fresh back then and shadow run did it just as good as anyone else at the time.

This reminds me of a theory I have about movies.
Ripoffs are judged by how original they are and adaptions are judged by how accurate they are. Therefore, if you change the title and the character names, a good adaption = a bad ripoff and vice versa.
Shrek never for 1 second pretends to be accurate to Mother Goose or Babes in Toyland, so Shrek is fine.
Chicken Little is a sequel/satire of the original story with elements of War of the Worlds, but they used the actual title of the American translation of the book, so it sucks.
If Back to the Future called itself “H.G. Well’s The Time Machine” people would be wondering where the hell the morlocks are.
If the Guy Pierce version of The Time Machine called itself and the Morlocks something else , it would have been OK, Even the 4th wall break where the hologram sang a song from another version of The Time Machine might have worked better.
Konami figured this out, which is why when an earlier version of Resident evil 5 ended up being too different from Resident Evil, they just pellet swapped Leon and called it Devil May Cry.

8:05 It... actually sounds like an adaptation of the Glove of Darth Vader series. That started with C-3PO sent to spy on the Empire crowning a new Emperor, too.

I would have liked a more slow-paced Doom game, with more story and less frantic, and I liked Doom 3 for giving more background and lore. 🙂 Not necessarily as a main game, but a spin-off.
Note: while some of the reason is that I think the setup has some interesting ideas I'd like to see explored, a perhaps greater part is that I can't play the fast-paced games due to a neurological illness, and I want to experience the story in Doom 2016 and Eternal 😉

I mean, to give it to Dwarfs, I just gotta say that if you had told me a year ago that we'd be getting a dark atmosphere, steampunky, soulsborne like game about Pinocchio from an indie dev and that the trailer made it look like a Game of the Year nominee, I would have probably laughed in your face until I turned blue... But here we are. (If anyone's wondering, look up Lies of P.) And plus, Vampire the Masquerade was sick! I'm actually pretty interested. Shame it got cancelled.

I really did enjoy Shadowrun. It was a very shallow experience, so it wasn't for long, but as far as arena-based multiplayer games (which everyone wanted to make because of how successful the unreal tournament games were), it wasn't terrible. But it wasn't Shadowrun at all. I loved the old SNES title, and the Genesis version was okay sometimes, but the shooter would have been so much better if they'd made a new IP with an interesting world and tied it to that instead. And if they'd have made an interesting world, maybe they could have branched out into different game types in that world. Instead, M$ ruined the Shadowrun IP until Shadowrun Returns came out and reminded us FASA fans that we did actually still love that world and good games using it could exist

Bro Marvel Nemesis was so dope. It was based on the “Ultimates” universe. It even had comics you could unlock and it would play for you to read.
