Mad Max is such an underrated game. It’s a hidden gem that flew under a lot of people’s radar in 2015 for a couple of reasons, one being that a lot of people mistakenly assumed that it was going to be another bad movie tie in game. Another reason being that 2015 was a really solid year for gaming with a lot of big releases overshadowing Mad Max’s release like Metal Gear Solid V, The Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Bloodborne, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Halo 5, Black Ops 3, Dying Light, etc. Needless to say that was a year of big releases in the gaming industry. But regardless, Mad Max is an extremely solid open world game with satisfying combat, extensive customization, and plenty of things to do. I can’t recommend it enough to people who are fans of the Mad Max films or post apocalyptic genre.
There's a right way to do open world and a wrong way. The wrong way is having an open world that feels empty. These are all great examples of the right way to do it
Mafia 2 was beautiful but the city felt ultimately dead for the most part. I think the focus on the GTA series on this vid was on the third one; well that as well as Vice City and San Andreas, was essentially you driving through an empty hollow movie set. Not that the above mentioned games sucked; they ARE immersive but not to the degree of a living breathing city but sometimes it got close
I will never forget the first time when i stepped into Tossaint in Witcher 3. It is a totally different vibe from the other areas, tho they are good in their own way as well.
It‘s interesting to hear that, in Mad Max, “every location feels purposely designed”. I’m getting tired of games which were designed purely by accident.
Recently I have been playing Mafia 2's Friends for Life mod which gives us a free ride type of mode just like Mafia 1. It is the best video game mod I have ever played I was able to notice Mafia 2's enviorenment properly.
I have played several of these. It’s a great genre. I especially like hardcore survival games, so of the ones I’ve played here, Fallout 4 is my favorite. Particularly so, because it features console mod support, which lets me tweak, or overhaul it, to my heart’s desire. If I could include a game on this list, definitely going with Cyberpunk 2077. It has a great layout, that makes sense. There’s industrial zones, residential, downtown, energy sector, etc, all the kinds of zones a functioning city needs.
For the time it was released, Saint's Row 2 felt VERY lived in. There was alaways something going on. There was always an NP. doing something that made it feel.realistic.
cyberpunk is similar to starfield, soulless city and npc. Everyone just standing or walking around for nothing. Even oblivion 2006 game has npc routine duh
Damn, to be able to fly around in Microsoft flight simulator, and make it to my area.. to my neck of the woods, just to see the shitty trailer I live in would be awesome!!
Have you checked out Homefront: The Revolution? It is not one large map. It has several smaller maps. But feels lived in and has hidden small bases and abandoned apartments.
I mean it’s a barren wasteland just like the movies, so that’s kind of the point. But the friendly strongholds feel very cozy and the enemy camps have a really “lived in” feel to them.
I would not include Elden Ring here, it felt really empty to me, with a lot of copy/paste areas and enemies, etc. - Yakuza 0 or Judgment, though, would absolutely deserve to be high in this list.
I just can't get into unity and syndicate on xbox one x, not sure if it's the TV but both games look way to bright and have a strange jagged look at times. The rpg trilogy looks fine though maybe it's a hdr issue
They're 10 y/o games made by Ubisoft, do you expect them to have the graphical quality of cyberpunk or black myth wukon? Adjust the brightness in both the game and on your tv and try adjusting other picture settings on your tv as well. Syndicate just got an update and the quality of all the visuals seems significantly better on my ps5 now than when I played it earlier this year
Metro has never felt open world.. It feels like a game that has open sections and you can see a good way ways away, but you can't explore everything in that game... at least in this case Metro three or whatever it was called Exodus?? I have all three of them and I'm working on the first two but I've not played them in a while because I fell off.. they do feel alive. I will say that I just don't feel like they are open world games... I guess to be technical, you could probably say this about a bunch of games.. all of them are going to have boundaries at some point, but I do feel like the metro series is a "lived in "feeling world, and the tone in some of those games is unmatched!
I disagree when it comes to Skyrim. The cities do feel lively, with plenty of NPCs and a sense that they have their own rhythm of life. However, outside the cities in the open world, it’s a different story. The world feels empty, with a vast map dotted by bandit camps, ruins, or soldier encampments (they are all repeatable). Traveling between locations often gives the impression that no one is around. This feeling becomes particularly noticeable when we realize that the civil war is one of the main themes that defines much of the game's atmosphere. However, while traversing the game, there is no visible evidence that it is actually taking place (Apart from a few main quests). Of course, except for the soldiers' camps. These offer a few missions, but there’s nothing more to do in them. Additionally, the leaders of these camps are immortal... So even if we win the war and decide to destroy all enemy camps, we can't actually do that.
Talks ankor how alive these game worlds are, shows of clip after clip with completely empty or near empty worlds. 😂 That said, nothing wrong with the selection of games, just very weird. And some vids are so blurry (Spider-man). It's just weird.
Any games we missed?
Assassins creed Unity
not the game but the version? yes. hogwarts legacy is also on switch
Ac unity
Ac mirage
Assassin's Creed Odyssey, mate...
Acts Odyssey, Origin, and Valhalla. As far as that goes most of the AC games.
Rdr2 and gta are peak of open world games
What about watch dogs?
KIDDO
@@itz_archi_69 i think you haven't played watch dogs yet...🤷🏻

Spot on
actually no. At least hogwarts legacy OW does not feel alive in hamlets. All merchants standing day and night full year in snow in summer clothes...

^^ that, and also first time I stepped into Shivering Isles in TES Oblivion :))

Nice list! I love open world games..
Kcd Is such a great game, congrats to warhorse for understanding what makes an open world great, quality over quantity.
LOVE THE FACT THAT WHAT THE THUMBNAIL SHOWED IS WHAT THE VIDEO started with, sick of thumbnail baiting
Loved to see mad max get praise.

Just wanna know can anyone tell me why is there no gta 5?
Have you checked out Homefront: The Revolution? It is not one large map. It has several smaller maps. But feels lived in and has hidden small bases and abandoned apartments.
4:30 This clip is a video on "lived-in" games (Hogwarts), and it does not include a single NPC.
Hitman is just NOT an open-world game.
RDR 2 💥💥💥
Man they should port gta IV to ios/android. Would love to play the game on the go.
GTA 5?
ED aren't live, it's pretty much dead in everywhere.
GHOST RECON WILDLANDS
I have question guys. Do I need to play Mafia 1 first to understand Mafia 2?
Hitman? I don't think you know what an open world game is....
No Way Bro's Only Got 444 SUBS 😭
Every single Assassin's Creed game offers the most rich and lived-in open world. Or at least since 3.
To think what it would be without those washed up corny Disney dialogue writers lol
This Character looks like Jack The Ripper...
Worst list trash ranking
Rdr2 is anyday #1
And benchmark for open worlds
Fallout 4
Mad Max’s world is anything but lived in.
I mean it’s a barren wasteland just like the movies, so that’s kind of the point. But the friendly strongholds feel very cozy and the enemy camps have a really “lived in” feel to them.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly on Elden ring. ER and BOTW have largely empty worlds.
Yakuza game was so spot on
Sadly, I agree. Love Elden Ring but as open world is miles away from the big ones

Hmm what about Yakuza franchise and cyberpunk 2077?
The Getaway - PS2
I would've added Ghostwire Tokyo and the Metro series
Metro has never felt open world.. no gta 5? you failed
Why u ain’t pick mafia 1 definitive instead, I really feel the 1920s vibe while playing that game. Mafia 2 was less feel-able for me..
I disagree when it comes to Skyrim. The cities do feel lively, with plenty of NPCs and a sense that they have their own rhythm of life. cyberpunk where?
maybe, to the makers of this video, that game feels like a GTA game, just dressed differently. I mean, many saw it that way.
It sucks..
Apart from good lighting npc's look like robots

Yeah total trash 😂
Not including Days Gone is a shame.....ewwww
I like elden rong, but to say world feels alive is a stretch. Lol. Everything is dead and lonely.
All 3 mafia games should be in one on this list same for my favourite assassin's creed odyssey
Nah.. Only mafia 2 can come in this list
Nah there all good thats your opinion good but but for me mafia 1 remastered or remake is my favourite of them so
