Wrapping the exhaust on your motorcycle or atv can give you multiple different benefits. Having a pipe wrapped helps keep the heat from combustion inside the pipe, therefore increasing fuel burn and power. This also helps improve the exhaust scavenging effect which increases the performance of your motor. Another reason people will wrap their exhaust is to cut down on the heat radiating off the pipe. This wrap can decrease radiant heat by 50%! Covering your exhaust pipe in hi temperature exhaust wrap also gives your bike that custom look. Wraps are available in Tan or Black. I used this as a heat shield on my Polaris. It has a smaller pipe and I double it up looks nice and now I can ride without burning the hell out of my leg. Thanks for the affordable product.
I'm about to wrap my Indian Scout, made by Polaris. Hottest damn engine I've ever had, well at least the hottest exhaust.
Thank you for clearest instructions yet, even if from 7 years ago. (-:
"You'll need a special tool to finish tightening the steel tie." I believe it's called a pair of pliers. :) haha
They actually do make a special tool for these ties, I used one on a power station I worked on. Pliers should be sweet for this though.
HAHA!
Or use Zinc wire, those are wayyyyyyyyy cheaper
Thanks for the video. I didn't read anything about soaking the wrap first so I'm glad you took the time to demonstrate that.
Loliwurks You bet! Yep, if you tried to apply the wrap dry it wouldn't be nearly as tight as the soaked wrap is. Thank you for watching!
Awesome! I was wondering how to do the wrap. I have a rebel 250 I'm converting to a bobber style and wanted to do this.
The best video on RUclips for wrap
not only it benefit from the video as mentioned, also also cover the den of the Exhaust, and it look better than before, as my 2 Exhaust got 1 dens each, after a accident, i need this to wrap it up
This is great help. I just did mine after watching this video. I used tube clamps from an auto part store to closed the ends. It worked out great.
i guess that wraps that up😉
Hey thanks, going to wrap my Puch Maxi’s exhaust soon! 😄
I'm going to do this on my VN1600 vulcan nomad Vance&Hines exhaust system with heat shields daily commuter . My cold weather pants will stop gettingburn holes in them. So thank you for this video .
nice video. my exhaust is in several pieces and I have o2 sensors on each, but I still want to wrap them. my negligence allowed my hot exhaust to burn a 3 inch hole thru my waterproof riding gear. that hurt my pride and my pocket.
I’d die of laughter if you’re cruising down the road and the wrap catches fire. 😂😂 it wouldn’t be funny if it was me but still funny. I wanna do this with my motorcycles pipes, great tutorial!
dat V-twin vibration tho
Good video, cheers man. No need for long drawn out BS
Very true!
Is it absolutely necessary to replace the gaskets, will my bike blow up if I don't? Or are you just adding extra unnecessary costs.
Pro tip too anyone who's never wrapped headers on a car or a motorcycles exhaust before with fiberglass wrap; wear gloves, or you're really gonna regret touching this stuff.
Nice tutorial! Was thinking of wrapping my rat custom CM400 and this definitely decided it!
Great Vid!
Luke Tiffany Sick man! What year's your CM? 70's or 80's model? Glad ya liked our video!
Good idea.....you're making your rat custom look even more ratty...perfect....lol.
nice vid. especially at 5.21 when the dude realises it aint gonna fit and the next frame u see you removed the wrap tape on the one pipe hahaha
he just reinstalled the original heat shield ;D. video edit probly took him several minutes to finagle it back on..not that big of a deal
nope, at 5:21 you see it WITHOUT the heat shield and in the next frame you see it WITH the heat shield! LOL
The wrap isnt removed, it's a chrome heat shield. At 5:28 and 5:33 you can see the wrap at the top by the cylinder head.
Does wrapping also protect it from the salty rain and fog?
Congrats Bro, an excellent Video!
I use a spray water bottle lightly so it stretches and is super tight when it drys.
I sure wish there had of been the video of the section where Pipe#2 meets pipe#1 , and the wrapping technique. Also , does it matter which pipe i start with? My top pipe rear cylinder is shorter , so I wanted that pipe to get the wrapping that went to the collector so I wouldn't run short , 2" at 25 feet lengths. And overlap with the lower pipe cylinder in front ?
Definitely wear gloves, I got itchy hands doing this.
I wish I would have read your post today BEFORE I wrapped the headers. Iv'e probably washed my hands 10 times this evening!
Me too.The sad thing is that I knew that It will itch.I'm a dumbass.
@@kravanamjesecu damn dumbass
Awesome vid man!! Perfect explanation
If I wrap mine, can I still put heat shields on over it? Is there still room to put the shields on? I want extra heat protection since I’m extremely short and it’s hard to keep my leg away from the exhaust.
great video, i learned a lot of tricks!
Great job, should of just wrapped the head pipe. Looks so much better
awesome vid !! seems like an easy job to do. my bike has 4 pipes how much feet of wrap would i need to cover them all ?
For us, winter is a good time to get some work done on bike, or add those accessories you have been wanting for a while! Our RUclips Channel has some pretty detailed "How To" videos if you want to do some of those things yourself!

I left a comment above can u read it and get back to me.. its about a reapply on wraps that I didn't wet first.
we sent a repy. Thanks for your patience!
Does it change performance of the bike, or is it just to protect the exhaust from the rust ?
+Harnas31 Having a pipe wrapped helps keep the heat from combustion inside the pipe, therefore increasing fuel burn and power. And looks cool :)
I'm assuming you're also applying it while its wet. And why didnt you wrap the second pipe all the way to the header?
does the wrap seal or help seal a leak at a joint where it might be blowing out ?thanks
+johncbr1100 No it will not.
thanks for reply
So helpful thank you!
can i use your procedure on a set of thunderheaders i have and put on bike that cant be started until later date and time
thank you great vid
IRL exhaust wrap is the modern equivalent of spraybombing rusty pipes with BBQ black. It works, it's fashionable, and owners who don't care about heat-induced cracking will be fine with it. Thunderheaders (I have one) are thin and delicate so I'd avoid wrapping one that wasn't already deteriorated. Pimping bikes for resale means appealing to fashionistas, but I still paint the pipe beneath so trapped moisture in the wrap doesn't corrode the pipe as quickly. Unless an exhaust was cooking my leg I'll never wrap my personal exhausts. I've peeled enough wrap off customer exhausts and seen what lies beneath...
Nice and simple information 👌
Is it ok wrap all way to end to protect legs of even pillion rider ?
Hi hello video my question is with the raffle will it still burn your legs as much as it would with straight steel
So u have to bake it before u put on the sealing spray ? So many tutorials where they just spray and seal before they Mount back the exhaust..
I've owned it for just about a year now. I'm also thinking about repaint the engine and touching it up it's got some roast on it. Is it okay to paint it? I've heard mixedfeelings about that. Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, I have personally never done it but i don't see any problems with repainting the engine as long as everything is sealed up properly and you use a high temp ceramic paint. You may want to contact someone like House Of Kolor to see what they recommend with your application.
i think that muffler needs a support bracket before it breaks something with how much it is moving
Does the black fade? Which brands do you recommend?
Is it better to run bike with wrap only before siliconing it?
What’s the best way to keep it from discoloration
I just want to protect my chrome pipes from the salt here in the UK. Is that an advisable way to do it?
+Richard Willoughby If you're looking to protect your chrome i'd research another way of achieving that. I don't think exhaust wrap will hold up to your expectations for protection purposes.
Do have to take the pipes off?
Did u remove the heat shields??? Or wrapped over them
Have you ever tried to stripe titanium wrap with a colored fiberglass wrap?
Mike Jones We have not. It would be very do-able, just more time consuming managing two wraps. Let us know how it turns out man!
Great vid, Jake. I just bought some tape along with silicone coating. If I'm wrapping it wet, do I let the wrap dry, then spray the coating, then let it dry again, then start the bike?
Mike Myers Sorry for the late response but yes I would recommend letting the wraps dry before coating them and then letting the coating dry before starting the bike. If you have any other questions let us know!
thank you
Does the wrap stain the exhaust?! Like in case of I want to remove it ? I got full stainless steel.
Its called stainLESS steel for a reason i hope. Worst case scenario you’ll need to sand and polish.
Classic 👌
so, just so I got this straight, wrap the top pipe first, then wrap the megaphone portion going on to the collector and then continue wrapping up the lower pipe, right? And also, do I need to purchase a tool to tighten the SS band clamps, or can I use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it up tight. My thunderheader is getting quite a bit of age on it, it has discolored and started to rust in some places and I am going to wrap it with the heat tape and hopefully get a few more years out of it. thanks.
I have the same pipes except they are black would that make any difference on wrapping them
Jason McK Having a pipe wrapped helps keep the heat from combustion inside the pipe, therefore increasing fuel burn and power. If you're looking for a performance difference, then yes it would.
Why did they partially unwrap the front pipe?
I just wrapped my pipes on my Yamaha fz07. I keep hearing a lot about rust and how the heat will damage my pipes. I did spray the wraps with a silicon coating to help the wraps. My question is should I worry about rust and cracking?
+TheCONtwo This is a hard one to really answer. We've seen some bikes that have been fine and others that have cracked. There is always a bit of risk when modifying a stock setup. If you are properly maintaining your bike and not putting it away with wet pipes and allowing them to reach full temperature we think it would be fine. It might be worth a call to your local shop for another opinion. We have a lot of experience under our belts, but we aren't all necessary service department experts. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
+Jake Wilson yeah I let it run to burn off any moisture. I have it covered up since we had some rain.
Amazing video, but I still got a question that I need to ask. Is the wrap changing anything at the sound which is going out of the exhaust?
Definitely not, it's a cosmetic covering that protects the pipes from rust and heat.
Man I better let someone else do this for me haha. I've also got some sort of connectors attached to my sportster
great video dude really helps
Forgot to soak it. Is this a problem??
Would I be able to do all four headers on my cbr 600 with a 50ft roll of 2"?
Thanks
+Ben Lenner There's a lot of variables with wrapping an exhaust. How far apart you overlap the exhaust wrap, how tight and how far down the pipe you want the wrap to end at? I would tell you yes with a 50' ft roll you should be alright. If you're talkin just *headers*, than i would say you're good.
+Ben Lenner ..diameter of pipe is also a variable that comes into play as well.
Hi i have a cbr600 too, and just ordered some black wrap to go with the black bike, but i've only ordered one roll to do just the middle section.
@spider love ..wow..that was very technical, but i think i follow what you are saying! I'm gonna have a good think about that. Cheers for you help. 😊👍
I have some Vance and Hines longshots I wanna wrap from about the header down about halfway or a little more would I be good with a 50 foot roll of 2 inch wrap ?
hey buddy how about if i want to remove the wrap, will it leave some adhesive on the exhaust??
When installing these wraps, does it make the pipes cool enough to touch with your bare skin?
Bigchuck678 The exhaust wrap will still be hot, but you won't burn the tips of your fingers or skin. Thanks for watching our video!
no, mine still get hot enough to burn the shit outta you.
what would you recommend cleaning the pipes with before putting the wrap on? would you recommend painting the pipes with a high temp, insulating spray before putting the wrap on or is that a waste or time/money?
+MotoShane513 as far as cleaning, I think even just using some plain water to get the dirt off can't hurt it making sure it sticks well. We wouldn't recommend any cleaning supplies. As far as the temp spray, it might be better to call the manufacturer of your pipes. As far as we understand, insulating spray will ruin titanium pipes. It may also cary across other brands. Wouldn't hurt to check first. We also found this resource for you if you need a few extra tips: www.heatshieldproducts.com/PDF/ISheets/ExhaustWrapISheet.pdf
+Jake Wilson thanks for the quick reply.
what if my exhaust pipes are a little rusted ? how will that affect the wrapper ?
Can you wrap the whole exhaust? Slip-ons included?
RL Pander Jr. Yes you can.
+Jake Wilson why didn't you guys do that?
+McMuffinFluffin That's whats cool about exhaust wrap. You can stop wherever you feel looks goods or to wherever you feel it is needed.
Just flippin' through some vids & came upon your (two-thirds) finished wrap-job. Got a question for ya ! Why didn't you finish the wrap up the front header pipe to "FINISH" the job !?? And to gain the added performance as well as a uniform look !??? I'm shaking my head in complete confusion & cannot think of ANY reason(s) why you would stop the wrap where you did & didn't finish the entire exhaust up the front header !?? So now you will not only have a very confusing "look" to your scoot, you will have a difference in heat dissipation on your front header pipe, compared to the rear header pipe, so when the gases from both pipes meet, collect & mix, you won't get a uniform mix at your collector ! Very odd.
Ghettoblasterhp600 Thank you for your concern but the wrap job does indeed continue up the front header at about 4:53 . We reinstalled the front pipe guard over the wrap for more protection but I can tell you we are getting a "uniform mix at our collector". Thanks for watching!
Very helpful.
what is it for? to cool down the pipe faster?
+2phalanges Having a pipe wrapped helps keep the heat from combustion inside the pipe, therefore increasing fuel burn and power. And looks cool :)
thanks, good to know!
Can this be done with the exhaust still on the bike?
Yes, try it
Will this wrap cause any harm to my thunderheader over time will it rust out I ride in the rain sometimes
porkchew I've had this wrap on the bike for over a year with no issues. Whenever I do ride in rain I'll make sure and dry the wrap out so it's not holding the moisture on the pipe. Most of the wrap manufactures will recommend coating the header with a high temp silicone spray to even further protect it and prevent any potential rust but it's up to you. On the next wrap job I plan on coating my entire pipe with the hi temp silicone coating just for a little more protection.
Why didn’t you wrap the front header?
Great video, I have a cb750 that I want to do this on. Do you have any thoughts on how much wrap I would need. its a 4 cylinder header.
jeremy godo Depends on what width of exhaust wrap you go with, 1" or 2" and how spaced out you form your seams on each header? I was able to use a 25ft roll on my KZ1100. It was barely enough to get all 4 headers done, not the silencer portion. Personally i like just the headers done, gives the In-line-four a clean distinct look. If your looking to do your complete exhaust system, you'll need an extra roll or longer roll.
Is it possible that i leave my exhaust protectors on my exhaust en than wrap it ?
hi
does the wrap cause rusting or any kind of damage on the exhaust?
Hi Aahar - that depends on the finish of the exhaust pipes. The installation procedure can also affect if the pipes are stained by the wrap material.
Do you have to wait for the dampness of the wrap to be completely dry before starting the bike up?
Hi, I'm thinking of wrapping my exhaust on my 84 iornhead sporty. What is the purpose of the silicone coating? Is it recommend? Thanks and cool video.
Dana Steele A sweet bike! The engine right before the evo, that's awesome! How long have you owned the bike? The purpose of silicone coating is to further protect the wrap from dirt, water and road grime. It also helps to further extend the life of your exhaust wrap and help even more with heat levels and the scavenging of your pipes. It's basically a little added protection for your wraps but not completely necessary.
Don't forget that special tool!
When using the silicon spray do you spray on a new install or should run the bike first , let cool and then apply ????????
+Steven T i think it would be best to run it first. so that the burn smoke shown at the end of the video can evaporate .
@@vishalxyzrepsol And then take it right back off to spray? Todays the day...I know this is an old conversion. Thx!
I'm sure I could do a rebel 250 pipes with 2" 50' roll
Does the wrap last long?
couple years
Guys,I made my wrapping when I was customising the bike.Along the repairs;the wrap got soaked in 10 40 oil in some places;and these places steam all the time when the bike is hot. The places that oil leaked looks kinda cool so I like it but the fumes is a problem, everyone is alarmed where I go. I thought it would dry sooner but today I took the bike for the fourth time out and it still burns.
Can I try to clean that with some gasoline? Or will the oil burn away within time?
Bugra Erkan It depends on how much oil was actually spilled onto the pipe. If it was a substantial amount it may be easier to just replace the wrap all together. Oil on your exhaust is potentially dangerous and in some cases can catch fire. If it was only a small amount of oil spilled onto the pipe you could try cleaning it off with some contact cleaner or something similar and then riding it until the remaining oil burns off. That's the worst part of wrapping an exhaust is all the weird looks you get from people out on the road when it's drying out and the resins are burning off! Like I don't know my exhaust is smoking? Ha Ha... It took my wrap a good 10 rides to fully stop smoking and steaming. Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching!
Thank you for the kind answer.Best wishes.
Bugra Erkan
You bet! Good luck!
Can I wrap an exhaust with a bump in the middle? I'm afraid it may get loose
Sure
can this thing hold 500 degree F.......... can i remove it and re-install again
+GAR A Withstands up to 2,000°. You shouldn't have a problem with re-installation.
@jake Wilson bruh... I forgot to wet my wraps... I've been riding its for like about a month or 2 can I remove them and really this time wet????
+Nathan Rivas We wouldn't recommend pulling them off and re-wrapping. It may be best to keep riding until they need to be replaced.
Kinda wished you showed how to wrap at the Y -- that's the main reason I came here 😑
Near the end of my exhaust, I've got 4 pipes that converge into one. It gets really tight where they meet so is it OK to wrap around the 4 pipes together there? I imagine it won't be as effective to retain heat as wrapping them individually, but are there any other drawbacks? Thanks in advance.
djanzano I would try and slide the wrap down around each pipe as good as you can and then wrap them all together to finish it.
Jake Wilson Thanks for the reply. I'll try that.
Do you not hit it with silicon before installing. I didn't and the wrap is turning white from the heat is this normal?
We did not use silicon spray. It is normal for a wrap to get lighter as it ages and runs through many heat cycles. It is hard to say how fast that happens though.
+Jake Wilson I just wrapped mine with black wrap. It's already starting to turn white from the heat. I read the wrap can become brittle and break if not treated with the spray. What do you think of this?
Wow how did it not fit ?
Well remove most of it and then the pipe will fit
Custom look with the front pipe half done 😂
Why do you soak it in water?
Can you put the metal exhaust covers back on after? Or would that be too bulky?
Do you guys think 50 ft will do on a rf 900?
250ft

I don't have to soak the wrap if i use titanium wrap?
+Ravi Sharan You will have to look at the specs on the wraps you get, but no, in cases we have seen you do not have to soak titanium wraps.
+Jake Wilson thanks, ever since i wrote this comment, ive had the chance to wrap the exhaust and i did not have to soak it, it was optional
awesome. Did you like how it turned out?

+chris sheinman what is your setup and wrap used?
+Jake Wilson set up is basically like the one in the video
+Jake Wilson I put the heat shields back on it over the wrap
@@chrissheinman8696 you’re suppose to wrap it either over the heat shields or not put the heat shields back on after you wrap the pipe
wider wrap be better ..look better and faster to put on
Anybody notice 5:25 wrap was no longer wrap to the top
Yamaha tells me this causes the pipes to rust fairly quickly. Is this true or are they just lazy?
Gene W It's going to depend on the pipe and the riding conditions. Obviously a pipe that is wrapped and get's ridden in the rain is going to be more susceptible to rusting than a pipe that gets wet that isn't wrapped. The wrap will hold the moisture against the pipe longer than if it wasn't wrapped but as long as you dry the wraps out and they don't stay "wet" for a long period of time you should be fine. If you have any other questions let us know!
Jake Wilson So the extreme heat wont cook off the condensation?
i worde with bare hands and now i cant stand the itchi any advise?
