  • Some people asked how to wrap your exhaust components and because I needed to do it for the BRZ's Over Pipe I figured it was a good chance to show everyone! This technique will work on any exhaust manifold or Exhaust components that you need to wrap. I HIGHLY SUGGEST USING THE COATING SPRAy OR YOUR PIPES WILL CORRODE!

This video is a good foundation for those that haven't wrapped exhaust. However, titanium wraps don't need to be soaked and expanded to be applied - they can be wrapped dry. Additionally, titanium wraps require 4-5 very light coats since the silicone won't absorb as well as fiberglass. I'm stressing this again due to the fact that between every coat with titanium wraps, you must heat-cure it at 400-425 degrees Fahrenheit between 1.5-2 hours. The heat-curing process will prevent any moisture from seeping in.

"Sprayed an entire can of spray paint into my face".. That must hit dedication, I'll keep watching.
DEI states that the titanium exhaust wrap is to be installed dry, as it is far more flexible than the previous fiberglass based wrap. Further, I dont know about subarus, but my exhaust gets awfully hot. Certainly hot enough to evaporate any moisture the wrap may absorb. I will say however, I do like the idea of using safety wire rather than the stainless lock ties.

Man that wrap is expensive yes but I personally would never do it that way cause it's almost like buying a diamond ring and taking the diamond out. With these heat wraps like this I have had no issues with getting it tight. Wrap it as tight as you can dry not in water then after the first heat cycle the wrap has a harder in it that will cause a lot of smoking when you first run it but that pretty much makes the wrap a cast to the pipe or header. There is a process to doing this so look it up if you buy this wrap. I have wrapped my headers a few times due to having to take the car apart no fault on the wrap and every time I have taken the wrap off the headers it is really tight and it holds the round shape it had being on the pipe as I said like a cast. I would try the dry method before this one. I hate to see that beautiful wrap soaked in water and then painted over that nice titanium color. Not trying to hate on this video I'm just saying there is more than one way that is effective.

The DEI titanium wrap does not need to be wet to wrap since its so pliable already. Also the high temp silicone spray should be applied to the pipe on clean bare metal and baked to atleast 400 degrees to cure. There is no need to apply it to the exterior of the titanium wrap afterwards... without coating the pipe underneath the wrap its still prone to corrosion due to no moisture barrier.

How is the wrap holding you? According to the DEI website the silicone spray can damage the titanium wrap.
"While not required for Titanium exhaust wrap, HT Silicone Coating will protect and prolong the life of the wrap. Due to the difference in material from glass fiber, HT Silicone Coating soaks into Titanium exhaust wrap's basalt fiber differently and needs a few coats and heat cycles for it to adhere properly. DEI recommends a minimum of three coats, each heat cycled for curing before applying the next coat. To cure, HT Silicone Coating needs to reach a temperature of 400°F for approximately 2 hours. Allow to cool before applying the next coat."

Pre-wetting roll not necessary for wrapping.

Without the coating the wrap will hold water under it and degrade the pipe over time. Don't have to wrap this way, but not going to let an exhaust company degrade to rust because the wrap is holding water in it.

Hey man so I believe the grimmspeed J pipe for the WRX is designed so that we are still able to use the OEM heat shield, would there be any disadvantages for wrapping using your technique combined with the heat shield?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  3 года назад +1

Should be any issues, better heat control overall. Just have to make sure the wrap is coated so water won't intrude and corrode the J pipe over time

Is that silicon spray really necessary? I mean, is water really going to get under the warap and corrode a pipe that's like 500 degrees?.. I'd think it would stay pretty dry just from the heat..
    I don't know either way, I'm asking..

So I was told that sealant needs to be cured at 400 degrees F for hours. Is that true? Also does the heat gun help do that? Im trying to do my exhaust and headers on my Harley.

  • @animoshho

You put a wet wrap on then silicone sealed the water from the wet wrap under the header wrap? Am i missing something?

No need to soak that particular wrap. If you use high temp engine paint instead of silicone you wont have to re aply every few months and may save some cash.

You do not soak titanium heat wrap, only the fiberglass bs. It wraps better dry.

Titanium wrap doesn't have fiberglass that can get in your hands. Only fiberglass wrap will do that

  • @ArmedTheAsians

Ceramic coat it before you wrap it. It will keep the pipe corrode free. Also DEi came out with titanium wrap which you don’t have to wet it before applying
