If you were to do it again, do you think the 1" wide roll would be easier to wrap the header? Also a suggestion I'm pulling from bicycle handlebar wrapping, starting at the joints and finishing at the mount flange, then from the collector up will have the overlaps in a direction that wouldn't catch or hold water. Think overlapping like shingles on a roof. Looking forward to a follow-up video when you think you've got a good idea of how well it dropped under hood temps, how well it's holding up, the idea that they cause the exhaust to rot from the inside out etc..
HOT tip- use regular plastic zip ties at first. Much easier and quicker to work with, so you can focus more on the wrapping. Then you can even do the painting over the plastic zips, let dry, remove the plastics one by one (if you really want to go all the way then spray each "ring" of bare wrap as your remove the zips), and finally install your stainless steel zip ties.
A couple Irwin style quick clamps really help if you are doing this by yourself. Get the first couple wraps started then clamp it and anywhere you need to stop and make a cut clamp it so it stays tight until you can strap it down. Like an extra hand. Sometimes trying to keep it tight and neat while getting the band clamp on can be frustrating, the quick clamps really help with that.
Perhaps the best video out there that I've seen to show how to go about measuring out how much exhaust wrap you'll need as well as indepth informative detailed Information. Nice work indeed Sir, Thank You!
I’ve done a little bit of heat wrap before and it was such a pain in the ass. I only did a piece of straight pipe but it was on the vehicle. After watching this, you did a dam good job. Looks absolutely beautiful and I bet it will work very very well.
I really appreciate your videos! I've watched a few videos as I'm getting ready to wrap my headers. Yours was easier to follow than most, and had the best combination of tips and tricks. I think yours was even better than DEI's video
I had never really given this a thought. I will definitely wrap my next exhaust system. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely a thumbs up for the video 👍
Good on ya Matt! Practice the easy stuff first. I have been considering (read procrastinating) on this for a long time. I have an actual header that I paid a fair amount of money for . . Not the OEM tubular manifold. So that is part of why I have been putting it off. Gale Banks says I will void the warranty if I wrap. So-o-o, I guess I will be "considering" a bit longer .. . Great as usual, though. Really appreciate the quality and pleasant entertainment value of what you do here.
Hey.....thanks for the video, lots of info. Question: wouldn't you want to start a wrap from the bottom instead of the flange ? You mentioned a lot of water exposure. Like a roofing shingle overlap from top to bottom instead of otherwise. Seems like it may trap more water. Just a thought.....thanks again.
Very interesting. I can see the benefits of it, and it actually looks really cool, and it shows how you go the extra lengths to get optimum performance. But, I'm too lazy, if I was being honest - lol.
Thanks, Matt, great tips for a professional job - I especially appreciate your tightening tool for the straps. I will be wrapping the headers on the 496 in my '68 Camaro SS... the plug wires run very close to the header.
Good info to have. Question??? When are we going to see You, Colt and Jeremy out doing some crawling? The Comanchjeep, The Samurai and Chubby Chaser need to get some video time.
Great video and great job. One of the best on wrapping exhaust/headers. QUESTION: Can you just use the high temp paint (like VHT) on both the metal and on the wrap itself?
I dont think you have to worry about rust as long as you run the car. I can understand if you get the wrap wet and then park it for weeks but, if it gets wet one night then just leave it running or go drive it the next day and the heat from the exhaust will evaporate all the moisture?
why is it that you need to heat the silicone spray on the titanium wrap before a second coat and not the fiberglass? or did you mean you need to heat the paint, then heat the wrap, then heat one coat of the silicone?
The stainless tie wraps are available at many hydraulic and commercial electrical suppliers. DO NOT use them on wiring unless its armored cable. I fixed a rig along the road where the mechanic had used them to run a battery cable.. It wasn't pretty.
With the other stuff, the titanium wrap, what did you mean you have to paint it first/ added processes? Do you paint the wrap before and after? or are you saying you have to paint the header, then wrap then paint again? I have a roll of this in my garage i want to wrap my muffler under my cab (a TJ) so the tunnel on the passenger side does not get so hot. I have no AC and in the summer the floor/tunnel is so hot. Thanks in advance for the info.
with the titanium if you want to paint it, you have to installthe header (unpainted) , paint it, then start the car and let it warm up to very hot, then let it cool, then paint it again, then repeat 3 times. This is because (as per the manufacturer) "it doesn't absorb the paint very well" and must be done in stages with high heat inbetween. seems like a pain to me.

Idk about the "tightening tool" being a pro tip..I think a pro would just use some needlenose pliers to tighten the zips, instead of ruining a good socket...just my thoughts tho
Hi hope I can find an answer. I put a aftermarket full exhaust on my razor to and wrapped it ,to hopefully help with the heat. Afterwards I started it and the head pipes started to smoke . I can understand wrapping an intake that doesnt deal with extreme heat or even a motorcycle exhaust thats easy to get to. But wrapping a header that has to come off every 5 yrs and be rewrapped? Cant get that please explain. I guess the expensive titanium is for me.
Like he said the benefits is the heat will stay in the header and not in the engine bay. In conclusion a cooler engine bay decreases iats which increases horsepower
Your thought about white wrap & black hi temp paint is backward. Header wrap should be of a light color to allow you to spot oil leaks on the header. Same reason you shouldn’t paint a engine block black.

Super tip: stainless bale wire wrapped helps the wrap from unwraping from abrasion. With metal zips every so often.
Or chicken fence wrapped and ziptied over had also helped a ton

I don't think titanium version needs to be damped, fiberglass does.

it doesnt last forever, especially in the elements and mud and water. For that you might look at ceramic coating
Why does the silicone have to be higher temperature rated than the header paint?

Mr Bleeping dude,
I have a BETTER way to get a wrap done !!!!
I give my retired neighbor 50 bucks cash only and about a week later I get the absolutely most beautiful perfect rap you have ever seen I mean it's almost as if he took some kind of measuring instrument and measure the overlap layer by layer and his trick for going around obstacles is amazing it comes out really beautiful and I didn't do a darn thing so that's my take on how to wrap or should I say that's a wrap 😂👍🏽
If only we all had your neighbor
Couldn't you just wrap it and then get it wet ?
