    I use rubbing alcohol to blend coloured pencils. I have asthma so I can't use most solvents. I just have a waterbrush pen filled with rubbing alcohol for blending coloured pencils. I also am not a fan of burnishing for the reasons you mentioned

  • @SnowblindOtter

    Kirsty, a better alternative to the Pencil Blend solvent is to use 100%(also called *Anhydrous* ) isopropyl alcohol. Anhydrous isopropyl is a really aggressive solvent that is great for coloured pencils. I use it myself... when I have enough money to afford coloured pencil.

    • @fiery.mercaba
      @fiery.mercaba 2 года назад

      You know, SnowblindOtter, you are bringing up something I was wondering about myself, namely using isopropyl alcohol (a.k.a. rubbing alcohol) as a solvent for colored pencils.
      So you have used isopropyl alcohol as a solvent for colored pencils, & it worked? That's great. I'm inclined to try it out myself. But, tell me something else. Is it archival? Now that's another important question needing answering. If not archival, of course it's going to become problematic for serious projects intended to endure over time & thus for projects intended to be sold.
      Thanks for your contribution to the discussion, though, & for adding thought to something I was already contemplating.

    Hey...I've found myself that the best white coloured pencil for burnishing is the Holbein White (OP 500). The Holbein Soft White (OP 501) is brilliant too, but you won't be able to use anything else over the top of it. The Holbein pencils are oil based just to mention.

    Do you (or anyone) know if you use a solvent/paint thinner in a moleskine or just any paper, does it like bleed through on the other side of the paper? And i love this video! 😍

    • @KirstyPartridgeArt
      @KirstyPartridgeArt  7 лет назад +12

      Thank you I am glad you enjoyed the video :D I have never tried moleskin paper but the solvent won't bleed through unless the paper is really really thin. You won't really use enough solvent anyway to cause it to bleed through as you only have to have a tiny bit on the paintbrush and blot the excess off. If you are worried though then test it on the paper you want to use before you start drawing to see if it does bleed through. The solvent dries really fast anyway. If you are working in a sketchbook and have two drawings back to back on the same page then I would definitely use as little solvent as possible on the brush :D

    Why use pencils when it looks like liquid colour after that? If I want that blended look why not use airbrush, oilpaint or acrylics? What has become of the delicate textures of countless cross hatched layers? And, I suppose there's the crux of the matter: Where are the pencils hard enough to create the 10ths and hundreds of layers needed for this effect? Decades ago there was Goldfaber 4100 (hardness ~ between graphite pencil HD and H) But now I find nothing like it. Any suggestions for coloured pencils made for cross hatching with extreme fine lines?

      Might be good if you don't have experience or interest in using brushes. Also some people don't have access to paints or interest in mixing up your own palettes. Can be easier to enter that style without committing to a new medium and all the supplies ($) and learning (time) commitments that entails.

    Hi Kirsty,
    Thank you so much for this tutorial ... really interesting and useful!!!
    I was just wondering if you could possibly share your opinion on the following:
    I - When I turned 15, my aunty gave me as a present the Prismalo Carand’ache fibre-tipped w/water-solube ink set of 30, and as you can imagine, after using the standard pencils at school, I felt extremely happy about this .. and have since then been using them non stop ...
    At present, and after watching some of your youtube videos, I thought of maybe (and would love to know what you think ...) add a couple of layers of interest and ‘finish’ to my drawings still with the Firbralo (as a base) with some colored pencils on top ...
    What do you think of this?
    I would be interested in giving this to my family as a present, so I can give them something I did with my hands ... :) ... therefore, lightfastness is something I read I should take into account ...
    Should you recommend this technique, what kind of paper would you recommend for the combination of both materials?
    The idea of using some colored pencils on top of the Fibralo markers is also to remove some of the lines that appear on the drawings, especially for large surfaces ...
    I wouldn’t be using or doing many layers though ... (as to be honest with you, so used to working with markers, I’m not sure I have the necessary patience layering and layering takes (although I would LOVE to ...), so doing the main surfaces with markers (as I’m so used to using this) might reduce some of the painting time ... and could use the pencils for borders and things such as shading and light ... and adding a couple of extra dimensions to the drawings ...
    And finally, I have been using silver fineliners with things such as mandalas, etc., but I am thinking of maybe for this ‘effect’ to be more ‘present’ or have more ‘present’ in the paper, but not sure if using ink instead for the borders and lines would be better ...
    And if so, will this resist or work do you think if I do this on top of the pencil ...
    What kind of pencils would you recommend to use on top of the Fibralo?
    As I use generally more or less the same palette, I was thinking of getting some individual Luminance, instead of a larger case ... therefore, invest in really good pencils (maybe more wax based? Although for precision, I might need something more oily?) ...
    Anyway Kirsty, thank you for trying to answer some of my questions ...
    I look forward to your advice ...
    I love your videos!!!
    Valeria

    Feedback: Doesn't work well with Crayola pencils. XD If you are limited to cheap tools. I'm sorry to say that while it works it doesn't work that well. Certain colors break down too quickly and get swept away in the brush and do not go back onto the paper. I also noticed while trying this out that I got a huge oil stain with the Crayola despite trying not to use too much and making sure to dry the brush out onto a napkin. Even if you manage to use a small amout with some colors the graininess stays. Did the same with my polychromos that I just got. And it works great. I imagine the major difference is the materials in the pencils (wax vs. oil)

      Adri Marti hello :) for me, I had the same problem; when I used the white over darker colours, it just made it a lighter shade, and not the pure white sharp strokes. I found that when I don't burnish the layers underneath, and use solvent instead, the tooth of the paper is still preserved, so the white pencil goes over well. just make sure the pencil is sharp, I use prismacolor and it works well. hope that helps!

  • @ladyseshiiria
    @ladyseshiiria 3 года назад

    Question: If you are using this technique should you wait to do the whole portrait before using it? I notice even if you stay away from edges it can still leak out and leave a ring even when I use a very small amount. Does the backside of the paper remain oily looking? Does brush size matter?

    • @FineArtforChrist
      @FineArtforChrist 3 года назад +1

      For your first question, I recommend waiting before blending it out with solvent.
      Next question, If you are using the right amount of solvent and you still have this problem then there is a possibility that the ring left behind or oily backside of your paper is also caused by the type of the paper. If you aren't using a mixed media or watercolor paper, then the solvent will soak through it more.
      Lastly, as far as the brush size goes, it doesn't really matter. Just use an appropriate size for the area you are working on. If you are working on details, use a small brush. If you are working on a large area use a large brush. Hope this is helpful!

    Hi!! I have a question... can you use the solvent by dipping the pencil into the solvent then using the pencil?

    • @KirstyPartridgeArt
      @KirstyPartridgeArt  7 лет назад

      I just tested it for you and it doesn't really work. The pencil cant absorb and hold on the the solvent like the paintbrush can. Hardly any solvent stayed on the tip of the pencil so it just laid the colour down like normal :)

      Thank you for trying it!! I think I will look into getting a solvent, thanks to you :)

      La Lay ehrlich gesagt kenn ich nichts was so ähnlich ist, außer quasi die wirkung von wasser bei aquarellstiften, das funktioniert zwar nicht bei anderen buntstiften, so wie dieses “solvent“ aber falls du aquarellstifte hast, könnstest du es ja erstmal so probieren, ich hoffe das war ein bisschen hilfreich :3

      La Lay Ich bestelle es mir einfach von Amazon, weil ich denke nicht, dass es in dem Laden in der nähe bei uns so etwas ähnliches gibt.

    Did you know that you can use rubbing alcohol as solvent?

    It seems there are no standard solvents that you can be sure aren't harmful to breahe - even if they are odorless.
