QOTD: What do you struggle with the most when blending coloured pencils?
I can't make it darker
Uhh... Everything?
@@sayxri7001 I can paint with other mediums but colour little harder
Cause I haven't touched drawing for 7 years And now I have to
* which colors to use & blend to create depth and/or a correct 3-dimensional effect as well as highlights
* pencils breaking when drawing AND sharpening
The main thing I struggle with with colored pencils is knowing which colors to use for skin tones sence there’s multiple colors for the skin...
Have a look at Draw Mix Paint's videos.
try swatching them first.
I totally agree, but I still love doing the layers of flesh :)
Maria Boschman Art I tend to do well with some light peachy/orange tones, pinks, reds and bronze.

Gosh with each video I am realizing my art teacher in school and college (who was the same person unfortunately) didnt really teach us anything! I am so glad I found this channel!
Thank you for telling me why artists hold the pencil this way. I have taken college art classes and none of my instructors could ever explain it - they would just say its the correct way or its better. In my personal experience my gesture drawings always come out better when I hold the pencil this way but I never knew why.
Do You use markers ? And if the answer is positive, could You make a tutorial about them (combined with colour pencils), please ?
That would be nice
how can I pick the right colors for a portrait drawing? as colors could be complex just by seeing them.
i hope this helps but these are tips i use in my art
1. use warmer colors for darker skin tones
2. backgrounds can either be darker or lighter than the focus
3. using purple and yellows for shadows and highlights or adding it to the color your using
4.looking at the color wheel can help make color pallets
5. looking at references and trying to copy them to see what colors they use and how they use it helps me
: )
A good friend reminder. Thank you very much, Kirsty! Have a great weekend! Take care and stay safe.
You always have such wonderful tutorials! Thank you for continuing to share with us here on RUclips! I hope you can get your online store up and running soon! Good luck and Super work!! I use watercolor color pencils and blending is so much easier with those pencils Thanks Again!
Love your videos! I've been watching them so much as I'm trying to improve my colored pencil drawings. I'd love a tutorial on how to do blending in incredibly small areas or on smaller drawings. I've been able to blend in big, open areas with little issue, but the little details get me.
I'm just starting out with colored pencils (Prismacolor Premiere, no breakage issues thankfully)- and although I am a seasoned artist, I have made ALL the mistakes you mentioned in trying to obtain a super-smooth blend. I have found that Bristol 300 or 400 vellum works well with solvent, seems to be enough tooth. For solvent, I have used Gamsol odorless mineral spirits as well as isopropyl alcohol. Gamsol melts the wax better, but alcohol evaporates more quickly.
How do you get your pencils sooooo sharp?
Use a sharpener 😂😂
biscuit Studios hahaha very funny
i think she has a video where she talks about how she holds the pencil at an angle and then rotates it every few seconds so it wears down on the sides rather than the tip
KweenBee37 she uses the Derwent pencil sharpener. I use the same one and it is awesome! She has the link below.
@@leilanizhang6916 I also do that.😀☺
Excellent tutorial in content and videography. I learned a lot to improve my blending.
Thanks for the tutorial! It was really helpful. I also would like to know if you have ever worked on canvas with acrylic paint before.
Cleared up a lot of queries watching this ! Thank you soo much

Wow, I love your videos ...I am using this corona time out to master these techniques
Thanks for the tips. I can't wait to get the next step up coloring pencils. All I have is crayola😩
I was wondering if you could do a video on you? I would like to know more about your art journey and how you started. 😁😉😆👍
Crayola pencils are awesome. Lol. Keep at it, because when you get to know your crayola pencils, you will find transitioning into a “better” grade of pencils is so easy because you’ve already learned the basics. I have a range of pencils-derwent, polychromos, prismacolors, and so much more, but I find I like my crayola ones a lot more than I thought I did.
Congratulations on 400k 😍u r doing amazing work
Right on time I needed this video 💪🏾
What do you recommend using when coloring in books? I don’t make my own drawings, lol. I learned so much with your section on burnishing. I’ve been doing all of those things. 😂
Thank you so much for this video💖
Really nice technique of color pencil
You are indeed a talented artist.
You looks like Kate Winsliet but more beautiful with more beautiful talent 🌹
You teach really well. thanks for the great tutorial🙂
Hello 🤗 Coming from your older kingfisher drawing! I have got a question. That brush, is it just water on it or something special with what you go over the colored parts? And are the color pencils you use polychromos or the other ones? Would be happy to get an answer thank you so very much 🌈
Thanks for what you do. Love being your Patreon and can't wait till my skill level is even a 1/8th of yours 😉
But not bashing myself don't mean to misrepresent. I see improvement everyday!
Your techniques are awesome i learn alot
Thank you so much 🤗
Hi! That Orange and Red pencils you use to demonstrate the burnishing method are sooo vibrant! What brand of pencils are you using for that? Thanks for another great video 😊
I love you thank you !! Your amazing ! !! Keep giving us advice !
thanks for this tutorial!
Your such a amazing artist
lots of information and great tips Kirsty 😍😘
Aha thanks mum :D
😍 love you lots xxx
Hi great tips! Can I ask what sort of Filbert brushes? There are seven types of flat brush sets for different media. Thank you
I have WAY too many makeup brushes. Could I use those with solvent so I can save money right now? Sorry if this is a silly question. Thank you in advance. You are sooooo talented!! I love your birdies!!
great video it ruled out a lot for me
Beautifully said
This is quite helpful 😁💜
Amazing talent!
Hi thanks for all your interesting videos, keep up the amazing stuff...where i can buy the solvent?I can't find the link to Amazon :(
Actually early this time! Love ya Kristy 💞
Such great tips thank you so much
Thanks for the tips!
You are a shining star❤
You are an amazing artist.
you are the best in the world of artists
I definitely did the mistake of burnishing on first layer the first time. I snapped my polychromos lead, and that thing never breaks. I was as heart broken as the broken lead hahaha... Reason it breaks: there isn't enough of wax or oil on the paper to help the lead to glide.
How do you blend Luminance Pencils (Caran D'ache)? with Zest-it?
Your tips are very useful!!! ☺️☺️
I am glad you found them helpful :D
Love your videos
Wow This is awesome! I am an old doggie but hope to learn these new tricks!🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸👏👏👏👏
Thanks I hope you learn something new :D
I love your videos and teaching methods. I purchased your colored pencil academy from your website, and I am sorry to say that I have had numerous problems trying to progress with the classes, and today, I can’t even get into your website - and I tried 4 different browsers. I generally prefer to contact people directly if I am dissatisfied, but I don’t feel like I am getting very far with my emailed issues. So sorry I had to resort to this- your videos really are wonderful.
Just amazing - your realistic renditions. Do you also include videos on (chalk) pastels on your Patreon?
Thanks and I do have some pastel tutorials on my patreon, but my tutorials are mainly coloured pencil, charcoal and watercolour :)
I love the way you say "color pencil" :)
I should try cotton swabs, I use a water color brush fairly large but has a point for the details.
Thank you for this video!
I want to be like u...love ur art so much...!!!! thanks..!!!
Do you ever use the no pigment blending pencils?
Can u recommend any cheap liquid blender?
Really really useful, thank you! Xx
Really useful on point videos 👌. Would be very helpful if u can do a video on watercolour pencils ☺
Hey Kristy. Is it okay if I use normal sketch paper to do my colored pencil drawings?
Hi Kirsty. Excellent video, thanks. A question: what fixative I could use for drawings with prismacolor premier? Same fixative for pastels?
Yes, you can use the same kind of fixative. I use a spray can of fixative, whatever brand is cheapest unless I have a coupon-but I use matte fixative (also called workable fixative) because you can spray your work and then if you want, you can go back and use more pencil and/or pastel over the fixative and then re-spray when finished. {I like to do a pastel background, spray the whole page with matte fixative and then use my prismacolors or polychromos to draw with or color in with and then respray the whole work when I’m finished}. Hope that helps
Your tutorials are very important
I don't think I've ever pressed that hard! Jeepers! My problem seems to be that there is not enough color. pigment in some spots making me need to add more so there is pigment to be "moved". Thanks
I just got a pack of 132 prismas so this was really helpful, thanks!
So useful tips !!!
Have you used blending stumps before? If so do you have any tips?
This is really helpful, thank you:)
Do you use makeup brushes, painting brushes or a type of brush for drawings??? I really need to know
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE UR ACCENT OMFG YAS
Kristy how do you prevent smugging while placing your hand on the artwork while coloring . Also how do you prevent wax bloom while you’re working I suspect a fixative ?
Use tissue
Wow, beautiful
Thank you so mach Beautiful Post
Thank you so much
Nice work super
Wow, your such a good artist!!
Thank you Ellie
Kirsty, how do you get such sharp points on the pencils?
