    I always dislike doing backgrounds because I didn't want to get all detailed about background stuff and now I can see from your video, that is great! It's not supposed to be detailed! You have such a way of teaching and showing examples that is very easy to digest and understand. Thank you so much for all these tips and examples, Kirsty! Also, those flower drawings turned out beautiful, better than a black and white photo, in my opinion.

      You can simply use abstract strokes in the background and will give you similar results.

    Back in highschool/college I did a lot of drawing. Especially on those cold winter days. My senior year of college, I had the time and opportunity to take a drawing class. I finished the class and did well, but the teacher took the fun and inspiration out of me to do what brought me a little piece of happiness. I graduated and the bills piled up and the income didn't and I spiraled into despair. 4 years ago I made a huge decision and moved to the Rocky Mountains of CO. In the recent past I've found myself browsing pencils and charcoal again. Yesterday I caught myself in the middle of drawing a rose and thinking about shading again for absolutely no reason!! It made me happy. Then completely randomly, your video pops up! It's been 20 years since I graduated college. Just maybe that inspiration and light is growing again. 🌹

      I realize I'm such a perfectionist and get distracted so easily that I never started but a friend posted a self-portrait she sketched yesterday and it made me want to try again. Pencil and paper were my most comfortable mediums.

    I´m only at the beginning of the video, but I just wanted to let you know there is a type of graphite pencil for artists that don´t shine that badly.
    The Steadler Mars Lumograph. It is really great and even if they start from B you don´t have to sharpen them too often. I can really recommend trying them out :)
    The video is super informative! Great job!

    • @KirstyPartridgeArt
      @KirstyPartridgeArt  6 лет назад +13

      Thanks for the recommendation! I will have to give them a try 😊💕

    • @wickedillusionart
      @wickedillusionart 6 лет назад +11

      Kirsty Partridge Art Make sure to buy Mars Lumograph black if you want mat look. The "blue" Mars Lumograph 7/8B pencils no longer have carbon mixed in, unless you got some from the old batch (you can tell by the look), so wouldn't recommend online shopping. Wasted my money recently, got regular 8Bs.

      Good that you wrote that! Totally forgot to write the black behind it, so thank you :) Yeah the regular blue ones are still shiny and really soft. Gladly got the black ones.

    Great tutorial. I have always thought that I could improve my graphite drawings by using higher 'B' grade pencils but never gone higher than 2B. Now watching this video, I can achieve a higher level by using the tips seen here. I have only used my 6 and 7B for image transferring! I liked the tips on Blurring the background to bring the main subject forward. Thank you for sharing.

    • @KirstyPartridgeArt
      @KirstyPartridgeArt  6 лет назад +3

      I’m glad you like the tips. The higher you go in grade the more shine the pencil will have and that is why I opt for charcoal instead. Carbon pencils are great for no shine as well. I hope you enjoy working with some of the darker pencils 😊

I have all notifications on for your page and I plan on joining your patreon and other offerings. You explain things so thoroughly, and your voice is so pleasant. I have taken so many of your suggestions on buying supplies and products. You are truly taking my self taught art to a whole new level and making me enjoy this craft so much more by going into it much more prepared and knowledgeable. THANK YOU KIRSTY!!! 🥰 Art is a main form of therapy for me anx helps my mental status during a very difficult time for me. God bless you for what you are doing.

    I do outlines for all my drawings but when it's not a cartoon like drawing I do them REALLY soft then get rid of them eventually, either erasing them for making them blend into my drawing.
    Also I have done some harsh gradients and I find that, yes it is rare to have them naturally but unless you are drawing something with polished metal, like trumpets or something, or have a glass affect in the drawing. You'll rarely have them that harsh.
