Although I studied art in primary school, I did not study further in university. One of my art teachers, back in the 7th-8th grade (12-13 years old), would correct me and mark me down for NOT using dark lines on the edges and not starting with and maintaining very dark shadows. I tried, it was wrong. It wasn’t until the final weeks of portrait art that she came up behind me when the piece was almost complete. This was a graphite sketch, btw. Or charcoal, remembering her shading. The sketch was very realistic and looked just like the model and she allowed that maybe the only way I knew how to do a decent sketch might actually work. Good thing as I could never get the feel for her technique. I did try because I desperately wanted to get better. But drawing outlines always made it look unnatural and more like a coloring book page. Ahh well
