Ohhh goddd finally .... A youtuber who actually reveals her methods and all to help us!!! Others are like " just believe in yourself" "practice" but never tell what we are doing wrong or what can we do better...luv ya!!!!
That's what I like about watching Bob Ross as well. He explains the colors and techniques he is doing instead of us just watching him paint with a music piece playing instead of dialogue.
Absolutely love it. If I had had an art teacher like you in school I definitely would not have ended up hating it so much and would actually have learned something and found my passion for creativity much sooner. Thank You!
Dear Kirsty Ma'am Thank you so much for uploading so many helpful tutorials on how to use colour pencils as a medium .. Ur videos have inspired me to finally try the medium . Thanks again ma'am 🙏
I like that flipping the drawing idea, I know sometimes I just get too zoned out looking at the drawing and I go detail blind... flipping a photo of it might help me out with this.
Thank you so much Kirsty for this amazing video that's gonna help me with all that i keep struggling everytime and since I don't go to any art school, I really have a tough time trying to figure out where I went wrong and where I should improve.... And honestly, my drawings have developed so much after seeing your videos and I'm so glad I found your channel...all the love for you
Girl you are amazing! I've been on the front page of the paper like three times. And you cold literally draw circles around me! I stopped doing art years ago, after someone broke into my cabin and stole all of my art supplies, air brushes, oils..well everything! So thousands! That and I was about the same time in a horrible accident that broke my back! So was a bit jaded for sometime! But after watching you late last night I thought it's time to get back to it! It was something I did that I really enjoyed! So thank you for sharing your wonderful art! Instant follower from me! God bless you! I shouldn't have let the thieves still some of my joy too! XO
Thank you Kirsty. That was the finest collection of absolutely exceptional and essential tips for drawing with pencil that I’ve seen in my 61 years. There were points in your presentation that I was already aware of as a watercolour and oil artist fumbling along for many a year now, but I learned so many vital and important tips that are going to revolutionise and massively and positively impact my art that I am quite pleasantly astounded. Just as important as listening to the your lovely and soothing voice and the important information that you conveyed, watching your hands as they moved across the paper, how you so deftly jut touched and caressed the graphite away when doing the light strands, and laying in the darker tones with the coloured pencil, wow, again, I learned so much about the actual technique by just watching your hands work so easily and so brilliantly. I’ll leave it there for you but really wanted to say thank you and share my hope for your best as you’ve inspired and taught me an incredible amount this morning as I had my breakfast here in Sydney, brilliant girl, thank you so much 😎👍
I love my tombow mono eraser too, it's so versatile and you can use it with many mediums. I also like the hack of using your pencils to help with drawing proportions, I do that a lot too. I enjoy watching these types of videos as you never what technique you might learn that's really helpful :)
I`d love to see someone go over how to get a nice shiny effect when coloring cars. Getting that reflective shiny look, I struggle so much to understand it. If anyone in the comments have any advice, I`d be very thankful☺️
Reflective surfaces have high contrast. I would find images that have the effect you're looking for and note the value differences. Note the level of contrast overall, in the areas by the reflection, the size of the areas, etc. You could even turn images to grayscale to focus just on the value, though such conversions aren't perfect.
So this may not be the type of shine you are meaning, but lets say its a bright red 🚗… for the shiny areas i would go to lightest red (pink)there is, so depending on the red pencil, the pink you use is important… i have a giant cup of reds from every brand and every version of red including the pinks that match tone wise… theres a pink white out from caran de ache its helpful with reds…also when you are doing shiny or highlight sections try burnishing or blending some areas with a white pencil and or colorless blender to practice effects… and another one you take a photo with your phone of your drawing then go to effects, push grey scale, this helps see the areas you need to work on more…hope this helps… oh forgot one…when im super lazy i just use my highlight pens, they are in most art supply stores, you can buy different shades to, but this is more of a finishing affect even after completing your pencil work for pop….
This is beyond talent and I just want to say that you're my inspiration in continuing my passion in art and I hope that my channel would be successful like yours
That black coloured pencil tip is gold! I'm literally working on a drawing right now that requires a lot of darkness in the background and I was just gonna use my 8B because I hate charcoal, it's too messy, or I'm too careless with it. But I'm gonna get a black coloured pencil and see how that works. Thanks, Kirsty!
I read your comments on using black pencils, and may I suggest you also try a particularly amazing pencil from Derwent - the "Onyx". It is quite honestly the blackest pencil I have ever used and it's not charcoal. They come individually for between £2.75p to £3.25p, or for a blister pack of 2, it's between £5.50p upto £6.25, depending where you buy it from, so shop around. It creates really intense, dark colour, lays down so smoothly and easily, and can sharpen to a really decent point if needed. I use it mainly for monochrome drawings of animals, as it is perfect for drawing hair and fur especially. I hope you don't mind me suggesting you try this.
I’m just getting started again & I’m glad I came across this. I’m struggling with detail & depth but have a hodgepodge of everything. Soft pastel: I struggle with fine details. Colored pencils: struggle with depth & blending them well. Now I can’t wait to mix my mediums together & see what I can do. Each one has strengths & weaknesses. I can’t wait to try out all your tips
These methods are fantastic!! Thank you for sharing. Years ago I learned to take a drawing or painting to a mirror if I felt like something was off. Taking pictures works of course but a mirror is pretty fast too
Oh my gosh! In this one video you’ve shown me how to use so many of the art supplies I own in practical, straightforward ways! AMAZING!!! I love watching you work - you make it look so….well…..DO-able! This is incredible inspiration on the days I start to feel like giving up! Thank you!!!
Finally!! Hacks that I can actually use!! Kristy, you're on my radar now & I'll be following your videos. As a retired teacher, I can well appreciate the time you take to teach us & I for one, am greatly appreciative. I'm also a professional portrait artist (oils), but I've been drawing for years & want to switch to colored pencils....I think. Anyway, thank you so much for the valuable info!!
Omg I've been watching help videos for drawing for yeaaars now, even had it in school and it was still so freaking hard for me to do the shadow work.... Thank you so much! You've made me a better artist instantly! Please keep it up! This is lovely x
I am watching this two years later but glad it came up for me to watch! I really like the skinny pen-like eraser, I am going to get one of those. Thank you so much for showing us how to use that and many other techniques. 😊
As someone who does more anime-ish drawings (I do a lot of anime work), but I want to get a lot better with shading and all that, and eventually getting to art similar to that in Fullmetal Alchemist, or the comic book version of Maximum Ride when I do sketch pieces alone... I find this to be incredibly helpful! I'm glad I found this video! I'm sharing this to my fellow artists who are my only irl friends lmao.
This young lady Kirsty is a magical woman. She is more best teacher than an artist. I love her way of telling the details . May she live long and long enough to make artist of her kind in thousands

Wow this pan pastel hack is key to coloured pencil drawing . I usually do graphite or coloured pencil drawings on Saturday with my kids. Thank you misss patridge for these beautiful tips they are so helpful and beginner deiendly. 👍😘
Thank you! That was excellent. I am most excited to try my graphite and charcoal powder with a brush. I did a drawing over the past few days and that would’ve solved a lot of my problems.
Even when you know most of the tips, that one new technique that is revealed can be a mental goldmine! Thank you for sharing. Brilliant that you could have retired off a modeling career alone, had you wished, and that you instead chose to pursue adding art to the world! Your talent speaks for itself.

Just got the stick eraser. I expect to be using it a bunch soon on the Christmas card I’m currently designing. This should be interesting. Thanks, Kirsty. Stay beautiful! 😉
Hi mam... U r my biggest inspiration ever.I really learned lot of things from u... Please do some more tulorials. Really mam I am your biggest fan😇. Love from India🇮🇳
Artists just amaze me.The thing that still amazes me to this day was a very young artist i knew back in grade school. That young child never took any art lessons or had anyone training or teaching him he simply loved to draw and did it all the time as he was a sort of lonely person with no real friends. This "GRID METHOD"really explains why so many of these type of life like artists work seems to have such accurate edges/proportions.
I was wondering so hard how they did those white lines in dark places, I wasn't sure if it was white color pencil or eraser. Then I thought no, erasers are too thick to do that... and I find here that there is a pencil/eraser thingy...a thin eraser that you can hold like a pencil! soooo helpful. Thank you so much!
TS 12:20 talking about flipping the picture. I have a mirror beside me. I often look at the work through the mirror. Fast, easy and omg you see mistakes almost instantly. BTW, Kirsty your videos are great. I love your enthusiasm and your tips. Lastly, for pure white highlights on colored pencil drawings, I have a very fine brush and a tube of white gesso. I gently scratch where I want my highlight then dip the tip of the brush into the gesso and paint along the scratch. Very easy to fix any smudging you make and the gesso stays in the scratch. .... edit = to remove excess gesso I simply use a graphite blending stump and wipe that clean as I go or you could just let it dry and draw over it. I mostly use the stump. You keep me thinking. Thanks for the hard work you put into your videos. All the best to you.
Thank you! I can’t get any white to clearly (opaquely) cover over graphite pencil or charcoal including chalk, acrylic paint in a tiny brush or white pencils.
Something I just learned is that they have matte pencils sets!! So that way when you use the graphite penciles, whichever shade pencil you need they're all matte and not shiny whatsoever.
I just came across a set of felt tip pins that came in various point sizings. From .050 to 3.5. This will absolutely help with my pointillism drawings.. my only regret was not finding them earlier.
These are great! A bunch of these I use on the regular; hadn’t really thought about until mentioned. Also a huge fan of tombow mono erasers; both the round and the square
Those are some really great tips! Thank you! Do you have any tip on how to remove residue after using an eraser? I always find it hard to remove from my drawing without accidentily smudging it.
In a book or tutorial or somewhere (?) I was given the advice to get a soft drafting brush and gently sweep eraser dust away, but that proved a bit harsh sometimes, especially when working with softer media. In more delicate situations, like when working with PanPastels, a big, soft, fluffy makeup brush seems to do the trick nicely - for me, anyway. Using those pastels makes me think of painting with eyeshadow, so I figured I’d go with that theme - lol! I’ve even used some smaller fluffy eyeshadow brushes to clean up around really tight spaces. Now I have a dedicated makeup brush set just for this. Hope that helps? Best of luck with your projects & have a great day!
Perhaps you can try taking masking tape and fold it so the sticky part is on the outside and use the edge and dab it gently on the eraser shavings and pick them up. Another way is if you have a mini keyboard vacuum, you gently suction the shavings.
Hola mujer bonita, felicidades, me fascinan tus técnicas, tus consejos y tips, gracias x tu don, tu talento y x compartir tus obras de arte. Eres mi artista favorita 💐
The grid method was what I learned in high school and worked wonderfully for me because I was able to block out the magazine picture then block out my paper in the same squares. The only thing is you would have to use the lightest graphite pencil and I don't think 2H is light enough in my set I have. Also I found to get the blackest black I can do is using a black gel pen or a Sharpie pen.
Thanks for sharing, I’ve been using many of these tips myself for years and teaching them to my students. I love when artists share their processes, keep it up 🍻
This was very helpful, especially using pan pastels. My only question is, do you seal your charcoal and pencil drawings to preserve them and if so, what product do you use. Thank you very much. 😊👍🎨
Thanks Kristy! Wonderful tips for creating better drawings! I always think the surface you work on should be mentioned in everyone of these videos because people seem to forget about the paper they’re using. Like using a hot press watercolor paper or other papers with smoother grain can eliminate so many problems with filling in the grain of the paper with color no matter what medium you are using. I may have even heard this from you, or Amie Howard Art, I watch a lot of her videos too. Your both very talented artists! Thanks again!
Wow! this is amazing. Thank you Kirsty for sharing this. I hadn't heard of these until this video and because I love to draw in Graphite I plan to get my hands on these pencils. Your drawing of your beautiful children are so amazing. A few years back you were the one I found to help me with drawing hair, skin etc with graphite. You are an amazing instructor. All the best. L
The best part about using palm pastels or another medium as a base for your coloured pencils is not the time that you save but the fact that the tooth of the paper is not damaged so you can have both saturation and details in a short amount of time.
Most greatful to you! I like the black colored pencil sub. In. Next the pan pastels for quick coverage. Faber Castell has a 10 b 12b and 14b at Staples. In my area. They seem to be leaning out their drawing section, so hope your able to find. I also like the combo pencil eraser for delicate detail. Thank you Kirsty. Have a magical day.😊

I'm excited to use the pastel/color pencil one most
These are divine!!! Thank you!!!!
It makes me happy when i see your videos..really its amazing
You can also use the proportional divider as a measuring tool and it's available on Amazon
These are super helpful tips. I’m excited to try the stick eraser, as I’ve never had an eraser that works well on colored pencil.
Thank you for this, It really helps those who want to draw.🙏
Thank You

I am so glad that this was in my recommendation. Your tips and tricks is what I needed for my graphite and charcoal portraits.
Wow! this is amazing. L
Thanks so much! These are great hacks! Love the Mono Zero!
The best part about using palm pastels or another medium as a base for your coloured pencils is not the time that you save but the fact that the tooth of the paper is not damaged so you can have both saturation and details in a short amount of time.
Great tips as usual. Thanks for sharing Kirsty
I was doing most of these techniques 20 years ago! Really good for newbies but it's old school and nothing new to most old school artists!
Thank you so much for this video

Most greatful to you! I like the black colored pencil sub. In. Next the pan pastels for quick coverage. Faber Castell has a 10 b 12b and 14b at Staples. In my area. They seem to be leaning out their drawing section, so hope your able to find. I also like the combo pencil eraser for delicate detail. Thank you Kirsty. Have a magical day.😊
WOW... You are an incredible artist Kirsty! Beautiful work!
