    • @adu1991
      @adu1991 4 года назад +43

      A lot of people think that tracing is "cheating" but more artists trace than people realize. I know that a lot of manga and other comic book illustrators do it, lol.

    • @henlo3161
      @henlo3161 4 года назад +17

      @@adu1991 Personally I disagree.. I do think its cheating just because people trace the base of the image (the sketch), which is the most important part of the drawing.
      And they just color that in like it is some sort of coloring page..
      If technology didn't exist, tracers actually had to practice their sketches
      And yes manga and cartoon artists do it aswell but that doesnt mean it isn't cheating. Especially when tracing someone elses artwork and taking all the credit

    • @zaqareemalcolm
      @zaqareemalcolm 4 года назад +15

      @@henlo3161 that kind of tracing to take someone's artwork is just outright stealing, no one who's sane is going to die on that hill defending the morality of that lmao
      Manga artists (especially on the time crunch that comes with doing _20 pages every week_ ) and their assistants who trace backgrounds do so on their own photographs to deliver a product on a deadline to get paid and eat etc., not necessarily to improve on their freehand skills as a primary goal. That's also assuming they don't just process the photo itself with minimal hand drawing lol. (Photobashing)
      It's about as "cheating" as some artists of the past occaisionally using camera lucida and obscura as aid for their paintings (though i should add never to the extent of overly severe dependence as Hockney otherwise believed)

    • @vevlyyy
      @vevlyyy 4 года назад +2

      In my opinion, it doesn't really help at all. Although, it can help a ton if you look for shapes constructing the photo and applying those shapes and lines in your drawing when sketching to make it look like the photo. Doing this is not considered cheating and will help you improve a lot. Soon you can see the shapes in photos without even drawing the shapes directly on it. Tracing just shows a outline and you would have to trace each time. Its kinda skipping a step and skill because it shows you can't sketch well

    I'm a believer in practice makes perfect but... That's also includes experimenting a lot, and trying out different things, not sticking to something if it doesn't work, you need to learn to know what is wrong with a drawing, either through critique or through trial and error. Some people learn better by practicing a lot, others just go off and throw caution (paint) to the wind and eventually end up with something they like 😀

  • @missjo5ie

    Yes! It’s so important to make sure to critique your art and examine specific areas you’d like to improve! Two main factors to improve.
    1. Interest
    2. Practice
    If you are interested in any skills then all you need is practice.
    For example, you won't get six pack abs just by training 1 day. Same is for art, you won't be able to draw good enough if you practice only 1 times.
    Practicing daily will surely help you improve your Drawing drastically in just one month.
    And the beauty is that you can see the improvement daily through out your art journey.

    one thing that has helped me a lot in breaking bad habits in my are is to record my painting process with a screen recording program(OBS), and use a editing video software(Shotcut, really easy to use). there was the added pressure to paint a quickly as possible and as much as possible in one sitting without interruption, not because I had an audience or that I had particular desire to draw faster at the time, but the longer, and more video segments I had to add the more it was a hassle to work in the video editing process. the was the fact that as I edited my videos I notices that I wasted a lot of time with bad and forced me to think up of better ways to save time, and to have an easier time fit one video within the length of a music or song, so there was also time restraint to consider. I worked hard to get rid of those bad habits, and having done a new years resolution to do one speedpainting everyday, it only lasted about 120 days, I managed to cut down on over 2/3 of my usual work time, maintaining my usual quality, even improving on them and have managed to streamline my video editing process so that it only takes me about 15 minutes to edit the video before exporting. Sense then, my art work has improve by leaps and bounds, and art piece out put has more then tripled, sense last December and I am very grateful for it.

    Hi, Kirsty! Thank you for this video! Your message is simple, very obvious after we listen to it but necessary! It seems to me that this idea of blindly practicing everyday comes a lot from the exposure we have to other people's art on social media. And I say this because it is really hard to imagine that a super awesome artist was once really bad at drawing or painting when you only see amazing results. Also, several times I've seen the public asking to the artists questions such as "how did you get so good?" and the answer is usually "I practice everyday" or "I've doing this ever since I can remember". Which, don't get me wrong, it is true, you need to practice, but I really like that you talked about how to practice cause that is where the "magic" improvement comes from. Great content, thank you so much!

    This goes for everything! Not just drawing/painting. But writing, photography, storytelling. So many people see critics as being inherently negative, but you have to flip that and turn it to *progress*.

    i have noticed that i have improved quite a lot over the past few months when it comes to the male anatomy body, and i can even "build" the body by looking at a pic of a guy, could be anime, cartoon, whatever, and i just do it. however, i still feel that i haven't improved to my liking. i.e. it doesn't look good, even if i use ink to make the artwork pop and such. i honestly feel like giving up at this point, because i feel that it's taking way too long, and due to a problem that i can't help, or even get rid of, it's so painful to me to see how slow i'm improving that it's agonizing for me.

    In my work in sculpting I tend to experiment alot and develop numerous new techniques I have invented by using materials that I make from natural elements. As I work I rarely ever produce the same exact result and develop various textures that simulate natural surfaces and colors from the sculpting clay I prefer. I have reached the point where none of my works are ever the same and each is unique. It's been an on going development for several decades and I find great pleasure in each project.

    Exactly what I used to tell myself. There's no point in repeating the same mistakes. That's the main reason why going from one drawing to the next there was huge improvement in my work as I applied either applied a new technique or I worked on an existing flaw. Once I identified my mistakes, I'd work on improving that aspect. Great video Kirsty!

    My art is improving it's just that no one ever appreciates it. I've tried Instagram, Deviant Art, Twitter, FB Art groups but my works get ignored all the time..it's like they're so ugly and I feel so hopeless

      If your artbis on social media, then I can guarantee that at least one person likes it. Maybe it's not the person you intended for it to reach, but content that's posted on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook...even people who you haven't met in real life are able to see that(unless your profile is set to "private").
      Keep putting your art out there for the public to see, and honestly express yourself while doing it.

      U need to understand that u have to clap hands for your damn self u can't be posting and expect everyone to like your work as long as you love it then continue and do your art. Social media will drain you if u go there wanting people to check out your stuffs. U need to focus on building up your skills and do art for fun eventually people will see your work and trust me people can smell it if u need soo much attention from them. I've been running my art acc for 3/4 years now
      I've just been posting and enjoying my stuffs eventually people started noticing my work only now. So be patient it takes years to be recognized sometimes
