Thank God someone in this art community actually shows people how to do something, instead of making clickbait vids. You're awesome
ruclips.net/user/shortsWYZ4rISCWfM?feature=share
But this video IS clickbaity. And MY videos aren't clickbaity, they are real painting lessons.
@@DianeAntoneStudio this isn’t click bait, but who *are* you?
Am I a amateur artist or pro artist
@@DianeAntoneStudio just Looked at you. Nice stuff.
When you're indenting, take a flashlight and lay it on the table so that it casts light sideways over your drawing surface. This will let you see your indentations as it will cast small shadows in all the valleys you're creating.
Hey....Great advise... I'll use it ... Thank you ❤️💯
great tip!
Fantastic
Brilliant!!!! Thank you
Great idea. Thanks
The tip: you can use it with watercolors, but the effect will be reverse. It's really convenient for painting flowers and leaves, you don't need to paint its veins above, the paints flow down the channels and make these places darker. Probably your watercolor brush has a pointed tip exactly for this.
Thanks for the useful video, I'm sure I saw this effect while drawing but never thought of using it!
lol, I've been using this method for watercolor so much that this video felt like it was opposite day, and I had to facepalm
I’ll have to try this. Thanks.
Holy fug I’ve been drawing for near 30 years and never figured this out and have always been intimidated by excess detail. Please do more of these videos if you have anymore technique tricks like this. Thank you!
A used ball point pen works great and you probably already have one.
Fug..... I like it
agreed!
Fug is so cute
I don't know if this has been said already but, if you gently lay Scotch Magic tape over the surface of your drawing and press down using the tool then carefully lift off the tape.
It removes a layer/layers of colour creating hilights. This works on pastel drawings also. It works for me!
At 72 , you taught me this! I will be busy trying this before bidding good-by ! Thank you.
dont say that, hope you live till 100!
If you're starting out, the metal tool you use to pop a simcard out of your phone works well for really fine lines
Do you have any tips for me on shading. I'm just now picking my drawing back up when I draw portraits I can't get the shading.
I used this technique for the exactly opposite in watercolor : ) Pigments will concentrate in the crevices to create beautiful darker texture. Works great for petals or grass fields. To preserve white spaces using watercolor, I can't think of anything but masking fluid. Does anyone know anything else that would work for white details?
TYSM! I was hoping for a comment that would explain if this technique could work with watercolor.
I like to use a white wax based color pencil to preserve white. Clear & white crayons can work as well. Draw with your pencil or crayons first & then you can paint over them, as watercolor paint is wax resistant.
I often use white paint pens over my watercolor to add things like stars, highlights etc.. after the watercolors are dry. I can transfer the paint to a small brush or use the tip it comes with.
White gouache is life
Wow thanks 😊
Hi Kirsty. I have used this technique for almost twenty years and if you use a small light on an angle it creates a shadow in the embossing making it much easier to see, also embossing tools can break and cut the paper so personally I use a dart with the tip filed down as this is much more substantial. It is also a good idea to work with the paper on a hard surface like MDF as if a surface is to soft the embossing is diminished and less visible. Thanks.
Excellent tips!
@@michelleconnor7669 It is a very versatile technique and works best on 300g 100% cotton watercolour paper. I originaly used Fabriano Artistico but a few years ago they changed the surface so I switched to St Cuthberts Saunders Waterford but do have some Arches Aquarelle to try out. Hope this is also of help.
@@JamieBoots Thanks a lot for the paper reference. I’ll give this a whirl ( I’m still utilizing Fabriano currently).
@@xjf459 Glad it was of help
I was about to say the same thing about the light on an angle
I feel like she posts what I need. Every time her videos are extremely helpful on my journey. Thank you, Kirsty!
Sams
Very nice but it is not very clear to me how I should go about. Can you pl make it more easily?
@@satyatadimeti3607
1) get the tool (indenting tool)
2) sketch out your picture
3) if there are any white details eg white hairs on a beard or elderly person/animal fur/dew droplets/etc mark the paper with the indenting tool - use it like you would a pencil or pen but apply pressure on the paper
4) when you add shading or colour to complete your drawing, the white details will remain clear as the pencil or pen won't penetrate the 'dents' you have made
Hope this is clear for you x
I haven’t seen a mind blowing art hack in so long!! Great video :D
I've been utilising this technique for a few years now, and although it can be a little time consuming at first, it pays dividends later in your work!
I love the shorter styled video! I was able to watch it quickly before I left for work, will definitely be trying it when I get home 😊 thank you for this 🖊❤
I love these indenting tools for my clay models, never considered it for a drawing, I'll be giving it a go, thank you
Same here, I used them mainly for sculpting. I'll have to give this a try now. :)
same
Also, you can find this tool in cosmetic sections of many stores, sold as "dotting tools" for nail art.
I played your video for my middle school class yesterday. Several of them are graphite artists and loved this idea. To compress a colored area as you did with the grass example = gold! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing a fabulous tip on preserving white details in drawings. So many artists don't want to share how they do their art.
Yeahh... that's a big trueeeee... I used to do indenting my paper to emphasize highlights but Im just using inkless pen for the alternative ballpen has different sizes too... btw great tips mam Kirsty😍😍
I've been an artist for many years and seeing new techniques like this, really surprises me. As there's always something to learn. I'm certainly going to give this ago. Thanks
Thanks, Kirsty. What a great tip!
If you are on a budget, and have a Dollar Tree near you, they sell something in the craft section called an 'embossing tool' which is real similar, but not as fine a point as the one Kristy uses here. Obviously, it's just a buck.
@Kind Love wow factor 10 outta 10. 👍😌
Yep that's where i found mine after learning about this technique.
I'm just imagining the fun textures I could get with watercolors! It would work very differently, but it sounds like a ton of fun to try
A wax based pencil works really well with watercolors for highlights: the wax resists the water leaving that area pure. Or you can use masking fluid. This indenting doesn't really work with watercolor because the water will go into the indent.
Thanks for the advice. I've seen colored pencil artists on RUclips using craft knives to cut into layers of pencil, but this method seems to be more useful for retaining fine white areas in the artwork.
I have a set of indenting tools, and it's extremely useful for my drawing and coloring!
I have been sketching and painting for a long time but found this advice really invaluable. Thank you for sharing lovely lady.
Thank you for a useful tip delivered very well. You got to the POINT in good time and did not over promise with the thumbnail and description. You have style and talent.
I LOVE how you actually explain these things this was very helpful
Thanks Kirsty , what a great tool!!! I’ve just finished a graphite portrait of a black and white cat - this would’ve been much easier in tackling those whiskers!!
Best lesson I've had in my 30 years of painting... never heard of that one, before. Thanks.
For years I have used an empty pen for decorative lines, setting coordinates and white marks like this.
I have watched other artist videos on using indenting/type tools to help in creating texture in colored pencil works. Your video absolutely made the most sense and helped me to "connect the dots"! Thank you so much for this very timely video. (I am starting a dog sitting in large expanse of grass, colored pencils work.)
Hello there!..my maiden name is Hartshorn! Unusual to find some one with it also…I’m an artist as well.must run in the family?!
@@dbyars8090 I am a Hebert (maiden name) and married a Hartshorn. You are right though, there are not many Hartshorns. 😁
I saw this technique in a lion portrait I was amazed by the results. Thanks for reminding me of it!
One of the best drawring videos I’ve ever seen. So well done
Accidentally came to this, but the fur really suprised me. Works excellent for hair and fur
Great tool tip! I am going to pick one up, but I do enjoy precise control over my use of light. For white details in my drawing, I currently prefer going back over my drawings with a white gel pen or for larger pieces, a fine liner brush, and white gouache paint. I'm excited to try this though. Thanks for sharing
Always wondered how they made all those lines...
As a self taught artist who draws animals, I found your video incredibly helpful. Thank you
This is exactly what I need!! You are really awesome for helping us I can watch and learn for hours with your teaching.
Hi Kirsty, we bought some to indent a line in the back of greeting cards we sold, as it makes folding easier. In oil painting, it helps to drag blobs of paint about, artistically of course. Thanks for your helpful tips, all saved for future reference. Regards JB
I wasn't aware of this but will be trying it .I was using veryest needles. Thanks
You are the first artist I have seen to share this tip I must get one now..
Mind Blown!!! I spent 15 years drawing comics and never knew about this trick. Thank you
I would use a Layer Mask in digital drawing on the element I’d want to use white detailing for and set my brush type (to whatever texture desired). Then, I’d set the color to pure black, as this will tell the Layer Mask to non-destructively erase. ✏️
You could also use the corner of a ruler. That's what I used to use when embossing maps.
Will try this for sure realising it's effect. Have seen this before but haven't tried yet.👍
If anyone did cermics or jewlery making......you probably have one of these tools! Multi-uses for what you might have used in your past lives or that of an older family member.....just an idea! Thank you Kristy, you always inspire!!
Fantastic, I use them for dot art, but this is a really good idea for scetching, thank you ❤️
I tend to overdraw construction lines and erase a lot. The ide of purposely indenting the paper, when indentations also make clean erasing just about impossible, is literally frightening to me.
But, growth is scary. It may cost me a few drawings, but I'll give it a try.
It’s knowing when to apply and stop erasing unless the lines are really heavy I use a vinyl eraser or a kneaded eraser to remove excess tone
Use an exacto knife at the end of your project to add those small white details
@@cured_bacon647 that works if your paper is thick enough. Some papers are too thin to hold up to knife work
@@nadinesawtell3267 very true but I would also argue those same papers are too thin to indent
What an incredible artist you are, thank you for the videos!
I have those meta pens... I didn't think of using the like this... Because I use them for drawing patterns on fabric when I do embroidery through a coa paper. That's so cool and helpful. Thank u so much!
THANKS !!! I have always loved that look and didn’t know how to achieve it 😸
Wow! Your suggestions for using this tool are amazing! What a great help you have been to me! Thank you so much!❤️
Thank you so much. You taught me today a tool I have never thought of. So marvellous a method and so simple.
That was so interesting Kirsty... I have never heard of indenting the paper before shading or drawing... a marvellous idea... thank you... never had an art lesson in my life so am learning a lot from your tutorials... thank you...👍💕
Thank you so much this will help a lot of new artist's & older.but some my not like like you giving art secrets away, very kind of you, well done.
This is a God Tier tip, and just in time for starting a project where I needed *exactly* this skill. Thank you so much!
Taking a deep breath, exhaling, just so happy to come across your channel, thank you !!
That's so cool! So basicly the same as over brushing in miniature painting
Kristy! Using indenting tool in this way is really awesome. Thanks for sharing this information.

This is such precious information😊 Thank you for making this video😊❤️
You can probably also use a wax shaping tool. They come un various sizes. Often used to shape things like polymer clay.
Great tip. I have some of these! Will give it a try. Thanks so much.
I have some dotting tools that are meant for fingernail art. They’re shaped much like the indenting tool you have. Think I’ll try them for this!
I can imagine using this technique to emulate wood engraving and etchings too. THANKS!

Thank you maam for disclosing this wonderful technique.Youre so kind
Thanks so much! That's a great idea, and really solves a problem for me. You can also get nail dotting tools really cheaply and they look like they do the same thing. Just one little correction - the plural of medium is media. Unless you're referring to people who talk to dead people, those people are mediums.
I never thought of that, wow thanks!
This is genius! I have these tools from my embossing and clay tools
Thank you so much for creating this kind of content.I already watched some of your videos and I can say that your tutorials is so easy to absorb because of the way you are teaching and interacting with your watchers. In addition, your channel helped me a lot in correcting some of my wrong strategies in making an artwork.

Amazing art. Enjoyed the whole process of the making. Thanks for sharing it
Thanks so much for sharing and teaching this to us all ❤
This is an awesome concept...I'm ordering my set tomorrow.
I haven't tried this, but I imagine using a light box while you use indenting tool would allow the indents to be more visible
Thank You so much this idea created a very good way of making it much easier and faster .
I don't usually work in color, but this will help me out in keeping some of my gray horses mane and tails white where I need it most!!
