  • Burnishing with colored pencils is something you'll hear mentioned in many of my videos. It's such a fundamental technique that I think it deserves its own video explaining what it is, why you should do it and when it's useful.
    If you'd like to draw along with me on any of the pieces shown in this video, I offer detailed tutorials, sketches, swatches and reference photos over on my Patreon: / gemmachambersart

    You are brilliant Gemma, just discovered your channel and can't wait to go through it. Women definitely dominate the coloured pencil drawing RUclips universe 😊

    Relative beginner here. I notice Derwent do a burnishing pencil, as well as a blending pencil. I use the blending pencil a lot, but have done little burnishing. Thanks for showing us burnishing with colours. I note that both the blending and burnishing pencils do seem to make the colours more vibrant as well as smoother.

      That is a great point - a few of the main pencil brands offer blending/burnishing pencils, sometimes called colourless blenders. I think there's nothing wrong with using them at all, but I do like the opportunity to make my final colour adjustments by burnishing with a colour.

    I get nervous about which colour to use for burnishing, so I always go for white, creating a sort of milky effect. Is the sensible thing to do to burnish in a colour a few shades lighter than the underlayer?

      The way I understand is you don’t burnish the hole picture with the same color/tone. Use the same tones you used for the layering underneath.

      @@Falco2Itachi But which color do you choose to burnish an area with multiple tones/colors?

    • @Falco2Itachi
      @Falco2Itachi 2 месяца назад

      @@frankkennedy6388 I’ve seen another RUclipser mostly choosing either the midtones or something like that but I forgot which it was. I suggest trying it out on paper scraps and decide afterwards. But I don’t think the difference will be that prominent when the drawing is ready.
