- I drew these bananas using complementary colour underpainting techniques(using coloured pencil), this way I was able to establish a great starting point to achieve correct tonal values and create a balanced image.
Please leave a message in the comments if you like this technique!!

I used the following material to create the drawing:
Faber-Castell Polychromos 107, 111, 138, 170, 194, 219, 249, 280
Holbein 476 sea fog
Paper: Saunders Waterford hp watercolour paper

This was brilliant. A bit of a light bulb moment for me! I like the the second one best. It looks more natural.
Thank you! I agree, I pushed the first one too far I think!
❤❤❤
Inspirational. Much appreciated.
👋You’re welcome, thanks
My stars! What talent….I’m soooooooo light years away from this kind of skill….anyway, got to start somewhere. Thanks so much for sharing, much appreciated! ❤❤❤
Thank you 😃
A real revalation of tonal harmony using the complementary as a base. I remember seeing the green in Renaissance underpainting of portraits in the process of commencement of faces. I never thought of the fruit preparation. A great tip and much appreciated.. rosie Hoy NZ
Thank you and you’re welcome 😄
Great Video! Convince me more to do underpainting before doing color. Before when I draw I color my paintings directly but after I tried black and white "grisaille" the output is more natural looking by doing glazing... and you prove it also works on colored pencils! Thanks for the video.
Hey that’s great to hear! I think you under painting with coloured pencil is somewhat overlooked. Good luck using this technique 😄 thank you 🙏
Brilliant! You have a new subscriber!
Thank you ☺️ much appreciated!!
I’ve never heard of this technique before - it sounds most unlikely but what an astonishing result! Definitely one to try. Thank you for this great video. Your drawing skills are excellent, too. Those bananas are good enough to eat!
Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated!!!
@@CraigEarnshawArt You're welcome, Craig.
I love the results. I do have to say the first pair of bananas look more appetizing.
Both have a realistic almost photographic look.

Great results both make the bananas look so realistic
Thank you ☺️
Fantastic work, and very descriptive. I love the difference between the 2 under colours. Well done 👏

Thank you so much!!
Thank you that was fantastic, I'm still trying to get my head around colour pencil layering
Thanks and good luck!
Love this! So interesting. I am a newbe at this.
Thank you 😃 All the best
This was so helpful thank you I'll be trying that with my next painting
That’s good to hear, thank you 😊
Muy bueno.👍😌
Thanks!
How did you determine which complementary colors to use? A video about using color theory to get the result desired would be super helpful.
I am planning a video that digs deeper into colour theory, here I just picked a colour either side of the actual opposite of yellow, one colour more towards red (warm) and a cooler colour more towards blue. Thanks.
@@CraigEarnshawArt what would have happened if you went with the exact opposite?
Hey thanks for the sub!!! Mixing exact complementary colours should give you the same exact neutral, not warm not cold.
Hi Craig, Thanks for the interesting video. Could you please let me know which paper you are using for this great technique. Thanks again, Ann.
Hi Ann, thank you, for this drawing I used Saunders Waterford hp water colour paper. Thanks again
