    You are one of very few youtubers who actually show their pencils short / used and I love it!! Not to mention great explanatory work. Anything that you show and say proves that you (and your pencils ;) have done a great amount of excellent work! Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge!

    Hello. I stumbled upon your channel after watching countless color with pencil videos and wondering afterwards if I was the only person that didn't want their projects to appear "flat" with no dimension. I have learned more from watching just 2 of your videos than I have watching 20 prior to yours. And an added bonus is I love hearing you talk! I've lived in East Tennessee all my life and I love your accent! Now, I will actually look forward to coloring because I know better how to achieve the look I want. I can't wait to watch and learn more from you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the time and effort you freely share here! ❤🌻🌾🍁

    Excellent examples colored pencils are oil paint in a pencil and that is why they need blending, sometimes a couple layers and sometimes many. In most media layers are what give that painting pizzaz. Those layers show through, I have seen you explain this so much. Maybe you could just refer to this video in the future. Watercolor is no different. Thank you

    • @ColorMyWorld

      Yes they do. Wax blends, oil layers. Think of wax like cake batter and oil like celophane paper

    YES!!! I belong to a Facebook group (not saying which one) but....we were given a challenge with a couple different winners winning the artist's last book...we were given 10 different colors to use...no problem, right? That's what I thought too...until I asked the admin about using a couple of the colors to come up with brown so I could do fur realistic...nope, doesn't want us to even really blend two colors in the palette together...😢 = straight coloring....straight coloring = NO DEPTH! NO SHADING! etc....When I look back at the very first page I ever did as an adult colorist...even then, although I really didn't know what I was doing really, I didn't just straight colored it. Even then, I was layering my colors at least some and trying to shade the best way I knew how......so guess who's not participating in this particular challenge?

      @@FernCurtis I am not really active on FB groups but if I were I would probably get myself out of that group. What a boring contest. What skill is needed to color a book with no blending. We did that when we were kids.

    About all I've ever used is Prismas, and I do layer them. I wanted to try an oil base, so I have some coming. Are you saying with Oil based pencils you don't layer? At all?

    • @kenivrataric9783
      @kenivrataric9783 5 лет назад +2

      Chris Ballard yes, most definitely, use light layers with oil pencils, most famously are the Polychromos, but a lot of other very good oil budget pencils on the market now. Oil pencils don’t really blend like Prismacolor, therefore light layers is how you get the richness of an oil pencil. I’m sure Lori, or someone else will add something I didn’t think of.

  • @cateyes3813

    Oh no... I have had in my mind that I must watch that layering video that Lori did recently, as I had/have a similar question. You know, watch it within a few weeks, yes? ✅ This was TWO YEARS ago?! I honestly wonder sometimes about Time being linear or whatever/maybe I have... Rip Van Winkle-ism (??) 🤔 Is there an "ism" for that? There's probably some... pop psych word for that 😄
    Anyway, back to the _actual_ topic at hand, I had/still to an extent have the same question. And when I'm wondering about layering, I don't mean with different colours, eg a Blue layer, then not sure was it maybe a darker Blue (?) and then Yellow layer.
    I mean - why do you layer the same exact colour/same exact pencil? And I think (??) the person's question was about why layer the *same* exact pencil too.
    I'm now at least up to knowing that with most pencils, you usually do get a smoother result rather than hard-handing it, also - very importantly to me, - because it's a LOT harder to erase (I do erase a LOT) if you don't layer/use a lighter hand and you just smash it like that straight to burnish and the third reason why for the layering/building up/light handing is because often (and maybe this might also be because of the paper) I've found that going immediately to burnishing very often gives that yucky... shine (??) Is that actually what the term "wax bloom" means?
    I can now also strongly see how layers are great if you use different colours for the same object to make a secondary colour if you don't happen to have the exact shade of Violet or whatever that you're wanting.
    But are there any *other* reasons than the three I've thought of about why layer when you're using exact same colour/exact pencil?
    Oh! Which reminds me! (Lori 🤦‍♀️) 😃 I HAVE been meaning to ask you for AAAGES about what your opinion is about those multi core coloured pencils that I've seen from Koh-i-Noor (Tritones and Magic) and the other more than one colour per core brands (actually the Crayola ones do have this really nice Violet one)?
    Cos... my attempts so far with experimenting 🧫 🧪🔬 with themhave been... "unpredictable" (??) In fact SO unpredictable that it was difficult to do an exact colour chart for them! 😨😭😭
    So yeah, any thoughts on those... "rainbow" pencils? Oh! And I hope you and your husband are well 😃🌹

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  2 года назад +1

      Simple answers, the tritone pencils are for kids. The colors when mixed together make mud. It's a cute thing my 6 year old God Daughter would like but my 16 year old Niece would not. As for the reason you use light layers. Imagine walking through thick mud. Heavy layers would sit on the surface of the tooth and pack it down instead of moving into the inners of the paper. Light layers dig in and it's easier to create new layers because it's not all thick mud you just sink into.

    • @cateyes3813
      @cateyes3813 2 года назад

      @@ColorMyWorld You're 100% right! The only results I could get really WERE actual mud! 😄 (I thought maybe it could have just been me not knowing how to use them properly or something). So yeah, I guess if you're aiming for mud, then these are the (rather expensive too!) pencils for you! 😄🌹

    Yet another awesome demonstration! Thanks, Lori! Great demo and explanation of how pigment, waxes, oils and the tooth of paper works. Art is science to an extent.
    Another thing I notice from studying the different blotches of color is that the layered color not only looks more dimensional, but also much softer, and much more interesting. That's ART!

      Yes, The bigger one has cancer really badly. It's day by day with her. Mostly they were good days, but I am afraid it won't be much longer. She is starting to have bad days. Once she starts refusing food we will put her down. Sad because she is only 8. The tiny one is healthy, but really old. He is like 17 we are guessing. We have had him for 14 years and he wasn't a puppy when we got him. In general they stress when their humans are gone, but with the fire works it would have been awful for them.

      Me too. The bigger one is my Son-in-laws dog. He didn't have family before we came into his life. The dog was his family. He is a mess dealing with this. As a group we make sure the dog is with someone 24 hours a day, 7 days. If she was my dog, I would have probably put her down, but he isn't mentally ready and the dog is not in pain at all. She is stressed in other ways. She has no bladder control at all. We deal with it. She can't walk far so we carry her. We feed her by hand. She gets really hungry. As long as she is wagging her tail we will do everything for her. She is seen by the vet every two weeks. Up until now the tumors (lung and bladder) haven't gotten bigger, but she suddenly started having bad days and I suspect her next check will not be a good one. The dog is a total sweetie even with what she is going thru.
