Oh my goodness! I bought a set of these on a whim, just because I wanted some water soluble pencils to make my watercolour outlines. I am so hyped up to use them now 😂
Im happy to hear you saying that these pencils are only a little more permanent than other watercolor pencils. I've seen many reviews of these pencils, everyone says that the inktense are permanent after dry, but no one proves it, they just repeat what the manufacturer declares, which really pisses me off because it's not true.
As far as I know, they are used on fabric and you can wash them. But my cloth is still unwashed, so again no concrete prove. A heard that if they are non permanent, they didn't dry properly or maybe there was too much of ink for amount of water. I am on my vacation so my set will be accessible to me in November and than I could try, .
@@magdamichelfeitova9446 I've heard that if you use pencils on fabric, you need to iron the design to set it. I don’t remember the details, but you can google it.
Fabulous artwork! A few weeks ago I watched a video by Lindsey the Frugal Crafter use inktense pencils to paint a bottle of perfume. So then I decided to get mine out and have a go. It’s great to see artists use supplies they already. One thing I realized from your video is to use the inktense pencils in light layers like watercolors. In the past a mistake I made when I used my inktense pencils and watercolor pencils is that I was coloring with them with a heavy hand, activating with water, but the color was so heavy/saturated I couldn’t blend it with other colors. A very helpful video, thank you.
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it to be helpful! I know what you mean when it comes to being heavy-handed with watercolor pencils and the amount of pigment. I think we have all been there and that a lot of people shy away from water-soluble pencils for that very reason. Treating them more like watercolors and building up in layers definitely helps! Thank you for watching!

Patty-I always enjoy watching individuals use the Inktense pencils. I u see e them in 3 different ways. 1) I wet the tip and apply the pigment on dry paper with a brush. 2) I will lay the color down dry, and then with a damp brush, I go over the colored area. 3) I will dampen the area and then go over that area with the pencil. Sometimes, I use them dry and add no water at all.i think the possibilities are endless

Wow, your painting is stunning. I have been thinking about purchasing these pencils but have been intimidated. Seeing your video, application process & tips have helped me to make a decision. The texturing effects that you have achieved here are mesmerizing. I am inspired to try them. Thank you.
I love my Inktense and always love seeing tutorials and techniques how others use them. A word on your Caran D'ache board: I found it to be way expensive here in Canada, so I ordered a white nylon cutting board from Amazon that cost a fraction of what the name brand board cost. You may want to check that out and mention it to your watchers. It is textured on both sides, but cleans up perfectly and works as a beautiful palette for the Inktense. :) Thanks for the lovely video!
Oh, awesome! Thanks for the tip, I will check that out! Cutting boards work great as palettes, I have a couple of glass ones I bought for cheap on Amazon that I use for acrylics and oils in my Mastersons palette containers. I will have to look into getting a nylon one for these!
Many thanks for your videos on Inktense pencils. I’ve only used them for vivid drawings and you have shown me the ways to use them for subtle and realistic art. It was a real learning moment.
I love your suggestions 🎉I figured out early on that with inktense , starting out lightly , as transparently as possible works much better that going in heavy.
I haven't used mine nearly enough! Thanks for this video, I'm going to try your techniques. BTW, I got a white cutting board with a slight texture from the Dollar Store, works the same as the expensive Caran d'Ache board.
Thanks for the heads up! I have had a few people say they have found something similar on Amazon, too! It's good to know there are less expensive options out there!
The blue/purple/black combo is what I used when I needed a 'black' watercolor paper to use metallic watercolors on. I had ordered some but it didn't arrive at the same time as my metallic paints and I didn't want to wait! Since the inktense was permanent, I could easily paint over it without it blending into the watercolors. The piece was only about 4" x 5" - anything larger would have been too cumbersome, as far as I'm concerned.
thank you @@CautionArtistatPlay and thank you for this excellent tutorial. I love your solution to creating washes with inktense. and look forward to trying it
I couldn't get the pallete you mentioned in Australia so i made my own. I got a pallet with a few wells in it and used super glue to put dots in them. Once the glue dries, you have a good rough surface. 😊 works a treat
First time... a good stumble onto your video. I just started using watercolor pencils and thinking it may be a good travel go-to. Your demonstration was great... your delivery superb!
I do have some Inktense, and I think they're actually water-soluble ink, not paint. That does mean it won't 'lift off' like you can do with watercolor, so I've always been a little afraid to use them! I'm glad I found your video today, I might give them another try! 😊
They don't lift as easily as other water-soluble pencils, but it can still be done a bit, especially if they haven't been washed out all the way. You should definitely play around with them more! They are so fun!! For a long time, I was also under the impression that they were actually made from ink, but then I started reading more about them on the Derwent website. Here is some information quoted directly from the Derwent website FAQ's: Q: "Is Derwent Inktense classed as an ink or watercolour product?" A: "It is classed as a watercolour product but it has different properties to a regular watercolour pencil, making it look like an ink." So, it's a watercolor product that looks like an ink, according to Derwent, and that's why I described it that way. www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/ Thank you for watching! 💖 Have a lovely day!
Thank you for this! I've had Inktense pencils for some time now and have only just started using them more and getting to know them better. Great techniques! I just finally order that Caran d ache palette and look forward to using it. Thank again!
@@CautionArtistatPlay well… I’ve got 2 skeins done… it’s a bit harder since I only have pencils not blocks so I scribbled on scrap calico and wet my brush on that (also gives me lovely fabric for sewing with later)… but it was fairly easy and fun… if a little messy 😂
@@CautionArtistatPlay You're welcome. I've worked with them a little. All water solubles are still fairly new for me. This was a good reminder to be patient and pay attention to technique. 😉
Great demo. I love the texture and tones you got on the linen. The oranges-it was so surprising how much color sprang out when you wet it! When I’ve tried watercolor pencils the lines never completely disappear and I don’t like that. It looks like these may dissolve more completely. Is that true?
Yes, I find that these dissolve beautifully compared to some of the other water-soluble pencils out there, and they are super vibrant! I love the magic that seems to happen when you wet them! Thank you for watching!
I love my Inktense and yet have no clue how to use them. Learning proper drawing/painting with them is something I definitely want to learn. I don't really do watercolour, so there is a lot for me to learn. I subbed :)
Thank you! It is something I have been mulling over for a while now. I have been looking into some options but haven't quite nailed anything down yet. If and when I do, I will announce it on the channel! Thank you for your interest!
Thank you for this terrific tutorial. I have only scratched the surface, so to speak, with Inktense pencils. I am curious about your choice of brush: do you go for something a bit more firm than a typical watercolor brush?
I have enjoyed watching your video, very clear...and amazing oranges and fabric!! Thanks for sharing, I am inspired to get my inktense pencils again! I have a question, if I may ask your opinion... How should I varnish an inktense artwork? Is there a spray varnish that would protect the work? Is there a danger that varnish would ruin the drawing? Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks so much ❤
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I usually use a layer of workable fixative, and then some of the UV clear by Krylon. The UV clear helps protect things from fading. Both are sprays. I wouldn't use any sort of brush on varnish because that might disturb some of the pigment below. I do very light layers of each, so I am careful not to disturb any layers that may not be completely washed out. I have never had an issue! I hope this helps!
Thank you! Looking at my video footage, it looks like it took around 5.5 hours, give or take. It's hard to judge completely because it wasn't done all in one sitting. I had to let things dry in between layers, etc. So, it's hard to know 100% how long.
Yes, I do! Thank you so much for asking! Here is a link to this piece on my print site! 🥰 shana-rowe.pixels.com/featured/sunlit-oranges-shana-rowe-jackson.html
Shana, love your work. You're one of the best "Realists" I've ever seen... Amazing! ❤ QUESTION: 3yrs ago when you created the Derwent Realistic Apples & Leaves, "How much product did you use? ...Did you go through a lot of pencils and blocks?" Thank you!
Thank you so much! Honestly, I didn't use up a lot of product on that. I have never had to replace any of my blocks, I still have my original set and they have barely worn down. In all the years I have been working with Inktense, I have only had to replace a few pencils here and there. A little really goes a long way with Inktense!
Wow!!! This is absolutely amazing how it look! Because it looks so real! And those details...Shana I am fascinated with your technique! I love the textures, and the details in the oranges, incredible! and I was so excited to see this video after seeing your artwork on Instagram! Thank you for always showing us your techniques 🥰 and your reviews!❤❤❤
I only love how other artists use inktense pencils 😂 I was contemplating giving them away but I might try to collect the core into a watercolor palette since that's the only way I'm most likely to use them. For anyone who tried, does this spoil them? If not what's the best way to get the core out? 😅
I haven't taken the core out of the pencils and used them that way, but I do use the blocks like watercolors and have never had an issue with it. I keep my blocks in their original container and just run my brush across them like watercolor pans. I also have artist friends who break the blocks apart and put them into watercolor half pans, and use them just like watercolors and haven't had issues that I know of. I don't know if there is any difference in formulation between the blocks and pencils, but I can't imagine it would be too much of an issue. Hopefully, someone who has tried it with the pencils will be able to weigh in.
Nice tip about the white pencil! That's not a Derwent colour soft pencil, is it? I don't have it in my set, but another white will do as well of course😊.
Nope! It's the Derwent Drawing Chinese White! It's a game-changer as far as white pencils go. That, and the Holbein Soft White are my two favorite white pencils! 😊
@@CautionArtistatPlay okay, I'll look for it in my local shop 🙂. I just tried it with my Derwent Colour soft though and that did the job as well. It's a tip I'm definitely going to use! 👍
These look super fun!! Yet another medium to try 😂. I was wondering if you would suggest using the nice watercolor brushes that I already use for my watercolors or would the Inktense ruin them? Thank you for your wonderful and informative video 😄. -Cathy
Thank you for watching! I don't believe they would ruin a watercolor brush, but honestly, I am not sure. I don't typically use expensive brushes with these, I usually use synthetic taklon brushes, and they work great. So, I can't say one way or the other. Sorry I can't be of more help on the subject!
@@CautionArtistatPlay Thank you for responding to my inquiry. Thanks for the info. I will probably just pull out my older brushes to give it go then 👍🏼.
Yes, it's Arches Hot Pressed, 140lb watercolor paper! I intended to mention it in the video, and I'm not sure if I remembered to. Sorry about that! I do have it and the other supplies linked in the description of the video, though. Thank you for watching! 🥰
I have an X-Acto School Pro electric sharpener that I used while working on this. I also have a Derwent Super Point manual sharpener that works great for these as well!
Some colors are lightfast, and some are not, just like any other set of pencils. They do have a color chart on their website with the lightfast ratings on them. The reason people question it is because Derwent has said in the past that they have not tested them after they have been wet down. That being said, if a pigment is really lightfast, it should still remain lightfast after being washed down, but if something is not very lightfast to begin with, it may fade faster than usual once it is washed out with water. I have been told that this is because the pigment partials are spread further apart, and more light gets in. From the Dewent FAQs on their website: "87% of the range is lightfast, however once water is added, lightfastness ratings will be different depending on how much each colour is diluted. If you are looking to keep your Inktense art for as long as possible, we advise you keep your artwork out of direct sunlight" www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/ I have heard rumblings online that these fade really fast, but I have not personally had that issue. I have weeded out all the fugitive colors from my set and only use the lightfast colors. Because of the rumors, I haven't offered my originals of Inktense for sale. So, I still have all mine. I have been working with these pencils for years, and none of my original work has faded. It is something that I tend to be cautious about, though, so I just sell prints of my work done with them.
You can, I just prefer a smooth finish when I am working with the pencils. You may have a bumpier texture showing through in areas where you use the pencil dry. It's really about personal preference, though. You may want to try them on a scrap of the cold pressed paper to get a feel for it and see if you like the effects they create on that paper before trying a big detailed project.

Since the inktense was permanent, I could easily paint over it without it blending into the watercolors. The piece was only about 4" x 5" - anything larger would have been too cumbersome, as far as I'm concerned.
That's a fun idea! Creative problem solving at its finest!! 😊
thank you @@CautionArtistatPlay and thank you for this excellent tutorial. I love your solution to creating washes with inktense. and look forward to trying it

Wowww, this is so amazing ❤
Thank you!!
I couldn't get the pallete you mentioned in Australia so i made my own. I got a pallet with a few wells in it and used super glue to put dots in them. Once the glue dries, you have a good rough surface. 😊 works a treat
Great idea!! Thanks for sharing!! 😊
Love it! Thanks for sharing your talents and techniques.

First time... a good stumble onto your video. I just started using watercolor pencils and thinking it may be a good travel go-to. Your demonstration was great... your delivery superb!
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed my video! 😊
Here is some information quoted directly from the Derwent website FAQ's:
Q: "Is Derwent Inktense classed as an ink or watercolour product?"
A: "It is classed as a watercolour product but it has different properties to a regular watercolour pencil, making it look like an ink."
So, it's a watercolor product that looks like an ink, according to Derwent, and that's why I described it that way.

Really nice to have direction with derwent. Can you demonstrate the pan derwent watercolor? ❤
Thank you for watching! I will be doing a video with the pans at some point in the near future!
I was stunned! 😳 You are such a professional - wow! I just bought my first Derwin pens, so I’m a newbie. But I got SO inspired! Thank you! 🙌✨

Hi there! I'm new to your channel and I love it! Your painting is beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial on Inktense pencils.
Hello! Welcome to the channel! Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! 💖
Great video bought the 100 set have a older set of 72 nice to use.
They are so much fun! Thanks for watching!
I found a fun video the other day colouring yarn using Inktense… I’m currently making miniskeins to try it myself! ❤
Neat! Let us know how it turns out!!
Cool!! Sounds like fun! That's going to be neat when you make something with the yarn!!
Thank you for this valuable information ❤🎉😊😊😊

@@CautionArtistatPlay You're welcome. I've worked with them a little. All water solubles are still fairly new for me. This was a good reminder to be patient and pay attention to technique. 😉
Yeah, they can be a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of them, they are a ton of fun to work with and super versatile!
You are so talented! Great!

fabulous thank you

I use inktense pencils or blocks as an underpainting to colored pencil or pastel.
Yes, they are great as an underpainting and for mixed-media!
I love my Inktense and yet have no clue how to use them. Learning proper drawing/painting with them is something I definitely want to learn. I don't really do watercolour, so there is a lot for me to learn. I subbed :)
Thank you for subscribing! Welcome aboard!! Inktense are a ton of fun to work with, and they are super versatile!
This is amazing!
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! 🥰
Awesome video!
Thank you!! 🥰
Would be fantastic to take a class of yours. Might this be in your plans?
I typically use synthetic taklon brushes with these, and they work well!
I’m gonna download this video and hit ‘play’ when I’m using the Inktense. Thanks!
You are very welcome! 💖
@@CautionArtistatPlay and a compliment for you: You are my favourite RUclips-teacher 🥰

U r such a skilled artist!
Thank you! 🥰
Beautiful! Great techniques. I'll be trying those. How long did it take you to complete the painting?
Thank you! Looking at my video footage, it looks like it took around 5.5 hours, give or take. It's hard to judge completely because it wasn't done all in one sitting. I had to let things dry in between layers, etc. So, it's hard to know 100% how long.
Amazing!
Thank you!! 💖
Do you sell prints of your artwork? That piece is absolutely something I would love to have in my home
@@CautionArtistatPlay Thank you for the reply... Good info to know :)
@baddkatt9504, you're welcome!
Wow!!! This is absolutely amazing how it look! Because it looks so real! And those details...Shana I am fascinated with your technique! Thank you so much, Claritza! I'm glad you like my work and the video! 🥰🥰🥰
@@CautionArtistatPlay 😊❤😊
@justbe1977 oh good! I'm glad the Coloursoft worked well for you!
@@CautionArtistatPlay Well, I'm not an artist like you. For me it's just a hobby so I'm probably less demanding 😁.
@justbe1977 if you create art, you are an artist! Use whatever supplies bring you joy! 🥰
@MissAdoptaCat that's probably the safest bet! You're welcome!
I do have inktense but never used them. Love your drawing. What paper did you use. Thank you
Thank you! I used 140lb Arches Hot Pressed Watercolor paper. 😊
Did you have to stretch the watercolor paper?
I didn't stretch it beforehand, but taping it all around while working helps. I didn't have any issues with the paper.
I’m not sure if you mentioned it in the video, did you use hot pressed watercolor paper for this painting? Thanks!
Yes, it's Arches Hot Pressed, 140lb watercolor paper! I intended to mention it in the video, and I'm not sure if I remembered to. Sorry about that! I do have it and the other supplies linked in the description of the video, though. Thank you for watching! 🥰

Haha! Glad to hear it!
What pencil sharpener do you use for your Inktense?
I have an X-Acto School Pro electric sharpener that I used while working on this. I also have a Derwent Super Point manual sharpener that works great for these as well!
@@CautionArtistatPlay thank you for the info.

Hello i am a student i appreciate your talent, could you show us realistic scenes with inktense, i m a fan
Thank you! I have the colors listed in a reply to the pinned comment at the top of the comments section, I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Iwas thinking of buying a set but heard they’re not really lightfast. Is this true?
Some colors are lightfast, and some are not, just like any other set of pencils. They do have a color chart on their website with the lightfast ratings on them. The reason people question it is because Derwent has said in the past that they have not tested them after they have been wet down. That being said, if a pigment is really lightfast, it should still remain lightfast after being washed down, but if something is not very lightfast to begin with, it may fade faster than usual once it is washed out with water. I have been told that this is because the pigment partials are spread further apart, and more light gets in.
From the Dewent FAQs on their website:
"87% of the range is lightfast, however once water is added, lightfastness ratings will be different depending on how much each colour is diluted. If you are looking to keep your Inktense art for as long as possible, we advise you keep your artwork out of direct sunlight"
www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/
I have heard rumblings online that these fade really fast, but I have not personally had that issue.
@@CautionArtistatPlay wow thanks! Wasn’t expecting such an in-depth reply. Ur a ⭐️
@ant11368 you are very welcome! Happy to help when I can!
Can I use cold pressed Arches?
You can, I just prefer a smooth finish when I am working with the pencils. You may have a bumpier texture showing through in areas where you use the pencil dry. It's really about personal preference, though. You may want to try them on a scrap of the cold pressed paper to get a feel for it and see if you like the effects they create on that paper before trying a big detailed project.
What do you mean by ink like? I thought the pencil cores are ink.
Hello there, here is some information from the Derwent website FAQ's
