      @@kathyhackney7950 sorry! I would say if you press down hard then they’re creamy and thick like butter. But if you just press lightly for quick sketches, then they do sound and look scratchy, because it’s thick lead so the lines aren’t crisp and they have a lot of texture that really shows up on cold pressed paper… if that makes any sense 😂

    Beautiful artwork! I also have the portrait set and I barely draw, and certainly I cannot draw a portrait to save my life! I loved the colors in the portrait set and it was the first CD set I acquired. I feel a little disheartened using coloring pencils because when I sharpen coloring pencils I feel as if I’m wasting the core. I mainly use watercolors and I don’t feel the same way using watercolors. A little watercolor pigment goes a long way.

    Beautiful work, as always! I have had repetitive strain injuries from using strictly colored pencils, and I rarely use them by themselves anymore (sadly). But I've enjoyed finding ways to combine them with other mediums and would enjoy seeing the combinations you come up with. As you said about the Meltz not working with the Caran d'Aache products, I find it the same with certain brands of colored pencils working better with different media on different surfaces.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Месяц назад

      I have noticed that as well, when it comes to using colored pencils on different surfaces. It really comes down to having to experiment and see what works best for you. Lucky for us, we enjoy exploring different supplies and techniques! I'm super bummed about my arm and not being able to do colored pencils like I used to, but I am looking forward to exploring new possibilities. What medium do you like combining colored pencils with the most?

      @micheleyoung9292 Месяц назад +1

      @@CautionArtistatPlay I'm sorry about your arm! Yes, it is good we enjoy experimenting! I like dry mediums, so my favorite combination is soft pastels, pastel pencils and Derwent Lightfast colored pencils (Pablos work well, too), on UArt sanded paper or Lux Archival. I also like NeoColor 2's with Prismacolors on Stonehenge or Strathmore Bristol Vellum. Neo2's, pastels and Derwent Lightfast pencils on sanded paper is also a good combo. I'm beginning to experiment with oil pastels to see how much colored pencil I can use with them... I can't wait to see the techniques you share with us!

      @micheleyoung9292 I love using colored pencil with oil pastel on sanded paper, so I will probably be doing a lot more of that! I also really love the Neocolors, both I and II, with colored pencil because they are such a time saver. I will probably be using my pan pastels a lot more, too. I have been using these tools more and more with my colored pencils recently, but it's tough when I am doing a review because I feel like I need to use the pencils by themselves for that. I'm going to try to work with my soft pastels more, too. Thanks for sharing what you like to use. That's helpful! 💖

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Hi Shana! Just wanted to add one more thing to our conversation. It totally makes sense that you need to use colored pencils by themselves for your reviews. As much as I love the Pan pastels, soft pastels, oil pastels, and Neo 1's and 2's to save time and reduce physical strain, nothing beats colored pencils for details. I'm always trying to find a way to combine the "blendability" of pastels with the details of colored pencils. Although I do have combos that I like (which I mentioned), I'm, always searching for that perfect recipe. I'd sure love to hear any suggestions you have in future videos.

    I was considering buying one of the 20 sets or even the 40 set last week when Amazon had some Prime sales. The Amazon sales were on for several days though and the Caran d'ache ones only lasted the first day. I was considering buying a set, knowing I don't NEED them and I finally decided to give in and the sale on their products was gone when I looked the next day.
    All good though, Black Friday will give me another chance. 😜
    You mentioned starting with the negative space at the start and just working on simple shapes. I look at pictures with a lot going on, such as plants with individual leaves and it is very intimidating and scary. I actually wondered how people get their heads around those areas and how they tackle them.
    In Australia we would call them pumpkins. So you're correct in one part of the world 😂 We don't really call anything squash, we define everything as pumpkin.
    Anyway beautiful work 🙂

      What a bummer that they were only on sale for a day! For some reason, though, that doesn't surprise me. I hope they are back on sale again for you for Black Friday. Thankfully, that is just around the corner!
      I find looking for, and drawing the little abstract shapes within all the details helps a detailed composition feel less overwhelming. It's another reason that I like to work section by section.
      I'm glad I'm not the only one to refer to them as pumpkins! That's what they look like to me, so I can't help but call them that! But I do at least try to be a bit proper for my videos. Doesn't always work out that way! 😂

      Thank you so much! It is a beautiful set! I really enjoyed these pencils, and it was fun to use just this color palette!
      To be honest, I actually cut the paper down to size. This was originally a larger sheet of paper that I cut into sizes that I am likely to work on. Any scraps I use either for swatching or as book marks, so I do try to use as much of the sheet as possible!

      @@CautionArtistatPlay How do you frame these pieces? Most people seem to leave wide margins so the mat can be fastened better and whatnot. But I sometimes do something really uncommon and crazy in the colored pencil world: I spray these pieces that don't have a margin with fixative and then frame them in frameless frames, so the glass goes directly onto the paper and becomes the varnish so to speak, and then the entire thing looks like a oil painting on a canvas and goes onto the wall like that. It looks really cool 😁

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Месяц назад +1

      @queenria7 I spray mine with fixitive and mat them and frame them like normal. Sometimes, I leave a border, depending on the composition, so things don't get cut off too much by the mat. But where this composition already has the subject going off the edges, I am not too worried about it!
      The way you frame things sounds like it looks really neat! Just a word of caution though, be careful of moisture. The reason for matting isn't just so the painting or drawing medium doesn't smudge on the glass. It's also because of moisture. If condensation gets into the frame, works on paper can stick to the glass and get ruined. Even just having humidity in the air can do it over time, so just keep an eye on things. I have seen it happen, and I would hate for something like that to happen to your art. 💖

    • @queenria7
      @queenria7 Месяц назад +1

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Oh damn, thank you for that advice!! I was hoping the layers of fixative would be enough, but I definitely trust your experience... need to find a safer way then!
      I've seen artists on YT who mount, spray and varnish their colored pencil paintings. So far I've shied away from that because it's such an involved process. But it might be a good alternative to get the frameless look - I'll do some more research on that. 😀

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Месяц назад +1

      @queenria7 Yeah, the fixative will help with smudging, but it won't necessarily prevent the paper from sticking if it gets too moist, unfortunately. I have seen people mount them as well. I haven't tried it myself either, because I'm not sure I have the patience, lol. My friend Nick Edgar does it with work that he has done on Lux Archival sanded paper, and it looks great!
