    I didn't know koh i noor did pastels, how cool!

      So, I was looking into the Koh I Noor pastels more, and I actually think they may even have two different kinds of soft pastels. I think they have just regular soft pastels, and the ones I have are their extra soft pastels! So if you end up looking into getting any, keep that in mind. Now I'm curious about their regular soft pastels! Lol.

    I am absolutely an oil pastel girlie. They are just so much easier to get into, you don't need as many colours, they are easier to store, and less expensive than soft pastels. I like soft pastels, but I would pick oil pastels if I had to choose between the two.
    I really want to try some wax pastels in the future, but for now I want to have fun with my Crayolas to get a feel for what can be done.
    I vote for markers next cause I'm a coloured media person and because it'll allow you to finish off the section you are working in before moving on to the graphite and charcoal.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  3 месяца назад +2

      Yes!! Welcome to the oil pastel girlie club! Haha! Playing around with your Crayola crayons first is a good idea, I suggest doing it on a warmer day or warming the crayons slightly first so you can get better blending. Thank you for your vote, I will probably do my markers next time I do one of these videos. I anticipate it being a much shorter video! Haha!

    Just had to add that recently I've been experimenting with Oil Pastels. I have all the sets put out by Paul Ruben and a few other, but none of the expensive brands yet since I'm in my early stages of using them to work with. I love their blending ability and how it feels like oil paints without all the smell and mess...well...less mess and smell. I love all art supplies though and trying to figure out what works good together in mixed media.

    Yes, I would definitely love to see you do a piece with the Paul Rubens oil pastels! I only recently got into oil pastels and got the Paul Rubens Haiya set, which people say are even smoother than the Paul Rubens.
    I'm also trying to combine them with my colored pencils, but it didn't go as well as what I saw in your raspberry piece. Probably because I wasn't using sanded paper, so wasn't really able to put colored pencil on top of the oil pastels, the pencils just scratch the pastels off again.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  3 месяца назад +3

      The paper definitely makes all the difference! The sanded paper has enough tooth that the pencil is able to grip the paper through the layers of oil pastel. I wouldn't be able to get that effect on a smoother paper. I haven't tried it with the Paul Rubens oil pastels yet though, so I'm not sure if that will make a difference too. I will definitely have to do a video with them soon!

    I have a set of the Grumbacher half stick set of pastels. It was my very first set of pastels and I created quite a few works with them. There is still about 75% left of each stick. I cherish them and still prefer them to the new sets that I've purchased. Maybe it's just me being sentimental though. The same is with my Prismacolors, they were my first set and I still have my original box (only a few pencils are nubbins but I had purchased backups for those at the time so I have a full 120 set of the Berol Prismacolor). I bought a newer 150 set and love them too, but they don't have the memories the old set has. I'm loving your videos on your supplies of each medium. Looking forward to the next one.

And a full set of the Berol Prismacolors is such a treasure! I think memories do play a big role in how we feel about our supplies. There are some supplies that I will never destash because of where they came from or how they have helped me on my art journey. It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who feels this way!

    I love my soft pastels the most, but I do also like the oil pastels. As you brought out the Cray-pas, I was like, my grade school art room smell! I love going through other people's art supply collections, I know I am not alone in the hoarding of the art supplies! For pencils, I have new Stabilo's and an older set from college. I also have a few of the Brunzeel's pastel pencils and I like them as well. For soft pastels, I use Caran d'ache Nu pastels for my initial layers, Rembrandts for most of it (love those) and the very soft, very pigmented Sennelier for the very last layers. For oil pastels I love the Caran d'ache Neopastels and Sennelier's. I also love my Neocolor2 crayons, I have a few of the Cretacolor Aquasticks, but don't find them to be quite as good. I should buy the Neocolor 1s, I just don't hear much about them and the 2's seemed like a 2 for 1 being water soluble. I noticed you said you did a video of raspberries with them, I will check out. And the inktense, we all love the inktense! Now Conte's sticks, I still have my set from college, the classic white, sepia, brown, and black set; fantastic for drawing, I never thought to use as a regular pastel, but that makes sense. They're probably very similar to the Nu Pastels, they even look a lot alike. I like these videos about supplies and comparing them. I also would be interested in your storage of supplies. Great video, Shana, I enjoyed it.

    This was fantastic! I love Inktense blocks, paints and especially pencils, but also love soft pastel sticks and pencils, both Pitt pastel pencils and Derwent pastel pencils. I just bought some Koh I Noor soft pastels, and was delighted to see that you also rate this brand. The price point here in Scotland and Europe in general is so good, it makes you wonder if they can possibly be any good. Strange how we associate large sums of money with quality, when this is so often proven not to be the case.
    May I request that you paint something using only the Koh I Noor soft stick pastels? I would really love to see how they perform in the hands of a true artist, as opposed to simply an art supply junkie like me who likes getting messy hands whilst playing around. I have found this to do a very good job, no matter the make. However, occasionally, you will know yourself, that if the pencil has been dropped etc it will break constantly. Thank you!! Using Neocolors with colored pencil is such a great way to speed things up! That's the main reason why I started using the Neocolor ll's. Then I got the Neocolor l later on down the line and ended up loving those too. They are both so fun to work with, especially with colored pencil!

    Recently I bought from softpastels on Temu with some accessories, but I’m a bit intimidated to use them. I notice that I’m avoiding the pastels.
    First I really hate all the smudge on my hands. So I was thinking about some sort of gloves to wear.
    I know the panpastels are less smudgie but to expensive to ‘give them a try’.

      Yeah, I totally understand that! I usually wear gloves when I am working with them now. I didn't use to, but pastels can be so messy, lol. You are right, Pan Pastels can be a bit on the pricy side. If you want to try them, I would recommend just getting a couple of colors first and going from there. They are able to be mixed pretty easily. But I do understand not wanting to just jump right into them at that price point. Maybe you could play around with the pastels you have, with gloves on, and see if you even like the medium. Then if you like it, maybe look into upgrading. 😊

      28:16 oh my God, in a little store nearby they are selling a lot (!) from Koh-I - nor AND they are really cheap.
      My first set of pencils were from Koh-I-nor and I didn’t like them (graphite and colour). So I’ve been ignoring the brand a bit 😅
      But if you want I can check for supplies for you?

      Hey there! I used the Pilot Color Eno mechanical pencil. I have a set of them. They are colored mechanical pencils and work great for preliminary sketches!

    Woo, lots of pastels 😍 According to Jackson’s blog, 2022, you can use isopropyl alcohol at +70% (the higher the better) to re set your broken pan pastels. There were a few steps to it, but seems easy enough. I had a couple turn up broken.
