OMG!!! That's a huge colored pencils supplies! And I love it! I have to said, I'm very impressed when you show your collection of Derwent Drawing, I forgot this beauty, because I have only a 24 set, and you do awesome works with this! And I think many artists have forgotten about these colored pencils, but not you! and that's very good, because they are extremely fabulous! They are lightfast, they contain a lot of color in the barrels, for me, they are very important to have! I, in order of my favorite colored pencils, would put Derwent Lightfast first and then, Prismacolor, Faber Castell Polychromos, and Koh-I-Noor. I would love to see the Soho colored pencils, and the bruynzeel pencils. And the Lightfast information. As always, I love your videos, but I'm going to save this one, I think it's fantastic! just like others I've saved of yours, lol!😅❤❤❤
I love the Derwent Drawing pencils! I wish they would come out with more colors! I love the fact that they are all lightfast, which is something I meant to mention in this video! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! As always, thanks for watching! 💖
@@CautionArtistatPlay it will be awesome that the Derwent Drawing makes more colors as you said! I love this pencils, and I love the Derwent Inktense pencils and blocks too, I didn't mention before. And you're very welcome Shana😊❤
How fun to see such an amazing collection! Thank you for sharing! My favorite pencils are polychromos and inktense, but I also have recently fallen in love with coloursoft and eventually want to get the full set 😁
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it! The Inktense pencils are probably one of my top favorites of all time! I also love the Polychromos, but they are getting harder for me to use because my hand hurts after a while with them. I need to play around with the few Coloursoft pencils that I have a bit more. I don't use them often enough!
Love your video!! What colored pencil would you recommend for non commissioned art?? I love polychromos but do not want to waste them on art I’m not making money on. Ty.
Thank you!! Honestly, I'm not sure, I'm not as up to date on budget brands as I used to be. I have heard good things about the Arrtx colored pencils but haven't tried them myself. A lot of people also love the Derwent Chromaflow, but when I tried them, they broke a lot, so I ended up giving them away. The soho aren't too bad, and Prismacolors are cheaper than a lot of the other artist brands, and they are vibrant and fun to blend. But they have some quality control issues like I mentioned in the video.
Great video, just found you 😊 My first artist grade pencils were Derwent Artist, many years ago. I'm a Derwent girl through & through. I'm based in the UK so they've always been the main brand here. I don't even own Prismacolor, as it's practically impossible to source them here. Funny how we are all different. My absolute favourites have always been Coloursoft. As you mentioned, I buy a couple of pencils open stock too its much safer than splurging on a whole set. Subscribed! PS the Derwent Drawing are fantastic. I wish they'd make a bigger range
Thank you! I love Derwent products. They are a great company! They put out so many fun pencil lines! Have you ever visited the Derwent Pencil Museum? I have heard it's pretty neat. I have never been to the UK, but if I ever go, I would like to see the museum.
@CautionArtistatPlay yes I have visited. I actually don't live that far from it. It's a really interesting & fun place. Should of mentioned I LOVE Inktense too think they blow all the other water soluble pencils away haha
Hey Lynne, I have one up on the channel that I did shortly after this video! Here is the link! Thanks for your interest! ruclips.net/video/Ohb-nfH65ns/видео.htmlsi=YP-Snu-Zl8wA0Yy5
I think the Drawing pencils feel more like pastels than the Coloursoft do. I was never all that impressed with the Coloursoft pencils. They are alright, but the drawing ones feel much nicer to work with, in my opinion.
I actually clicked the thumbnail because of the giant plush LOL (I now need to go buy one) but I’m a hoarder of art supplies too, especially colored pencils since it’s my specialty medium. I love these long videos, it’s fun to play when I’m drawing! 🖌️🎨
Lol, yeah, the plush is amazing, I love it so much! I bought mine at Kohls! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that I could keep you company while you were drawing! 💖
@ I already have so many plushies but that pencil plush is just calling my name. I have a plush basketball that I take everywhere with me. She’s even in my profile pic 🏀🤣
I enjoyed watching this and seeing your pencil journey. Very similar to my own including the Bruynzeel drawer set (although I got the 48 gifted from my husband) and the recent Pablo purchase too. Now, if I could just do what you do with yours so beautifully then I would be set 😆 Definitely a journey.
Beautiful collection! Seeing this is making me think about my own collection. I only saw one or two that I don’t have but then I have a few that I didn’t see, but you use yours so often, me… not so much. Perhaps I need to get them more accessible in the studio and test the waters with some mixed media, they would go good with watercolors. I don’t think I have as many drawers as you and certainly not as many as @robyounce644 lol a lot of mine are still in their tins or boxes on my shelf. Yes you are correct the Faber Castell lines, Polys and Albrechts do match, the colors are the same. I would love to see you use the Albrecht Durers, perhaps it will inspire me to use my own. Thanks for sharing your collection with us.
Thank you, Angela! Colored pencils do work wonderfully with watercolors! You should definitely dust the 'ol pencils off and play around with that soon! I have always loved that about Faber-Castell, it makes it so easy to mix and match their lines! I will definitely be using the Albrecht Durer on the channel soon!
I too got seriously got back into art 10 years ago. In HS Prisma was the pencils everyone wanted. I also keep only lightest of 50 years or more. I just ordered the Blick pencils to go with my oil pastels!
Ar that time, I had been primarily painting with acrylics but have always loved to play with different supplies. I had the urge to branch out, so I started playing with colored pencils. I had mostly student grade at the time, but had a few stray prismscolors mixed in with my stash, and when I started playing with those, it was like a whole new world! I've been hooked ever since! Lol
Great video Shana, and no it wasn't too long of a video. I would love to see you do an under painting with the Albrect durer pencils, then use the Polychromos over top of them. My favorites are Polychromos, Holbein, Lightfast and Pablos. I need to get out my Caran d'ache Aquarelles and Luminance and see how I like using the 2 of them together. I've used each one individually, but not together in a picture. How long did it take you to do the Polychromos Seascape and Lighthouse picture? Did you use OMS on that picture? It's absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you, Cheryl! That's a great idea, I will have to see how well the Polychromos and Albrecht Durer go together! I have also had my eyes on the Caran d'Ache Aquarelles, but I really need to use my Albrecht Durer pencils before investing in yet another line of pencils! Haha. I honestly don't remember how long it took me to do my lighthouse piece because it was a few years ago now. I'm sure it took me, probably at least 10 hours, I would think, because it's an 11"x14". May have been less, but possibly more, too. I believe I did use OMS, I used OMS a lot back then. I have tried to get away from it now because of the vapors. Thank you! I'm glad you like it, it's one of my top favorites!
@@CautionArtistatPlay I only have the 24 set of Albrect durer Magnus Watercolor pencils, I don't have the regular size of their watercolor pencils. I do have the 76 set of Aquarelles and need to use them more. I think I got away fron using my watercolor pencils after using Daniel Smith, Schmincke and other traditional watercolors. I do like using watercolors under colored pencil though. It doesn't seem to need as many layers of colored pencil after applying watercolors.
Somehow I am not surprised that’s the take away lol but to be honest I thought hmm how many more pencils can I add to my drawers that are just single layers. Great minds so the saying goes…
Derwent light fast and Derwent drawing are my all-time favorite pencils to work with although there are colors from the polychromos line but you could not pay me to give up because I draw a lot of voter realistic animals. The big thing about the Derwent light fast is that they are Derwent very first oil-based pencil and yet they feel as smooth as any amazing wax pencil if not smoother. I love that Derwent made these two lines to be colors from nature they are not fluorescence they are not neons they are not colors we don't seem naturally.
I agree when it comes to the Derwent Lightfast! I love their colors and how smooth they are to blend for an oil-based pencil! I will always have a special place in my heart for the Derwent Drawing pencils, too. They are definitely two of my most used lines of pencils.
For pure fun and brightness, I love the Derwent Chromaflow pencils. They are great for sketchbook work and things you're going to scan and sell prints of. For commissioned work, I tend to favour the Lightfast, with the Luminance for skintones.
I tried the Chromaflow when they first came out, and the ones I had broke like crazy, I was so disappointed. Plus, at that time, they hadn't released any lightfast ratings yet. I ended up giving them to my niece. I love the Lightfast pencils! They are definitely a go-to for me with work I sell! I'm still getting into the Luminance more, even though I have had them for years.
Intense uses dyes instead of pigments so they are inherently more fugitive but the color payout and layerability is worth it, especially if you sell prints!
They do seem very dye like, but on the Derwent website, they claim they are pigment-based. According to the Derwent website FAQ's under the question, "How would you describe the Derwent Inktense Product, Derwent answered: "Inktense is a pigment-based product that is extremely soluble in water, but has a transparent ink-like wash unlike a traditional watercolour. Inktense is also permanent when dry." And then when asked if they are dye-based or pigment-based, they answered: "Inktense is pigment based, but its unique formulation produces vibrant colours and washes." They are a pretty interesting and unique product for sure! Here is a link to the FAQ's so you can read more about them if you'd like. It's also where I found out that they aren't actually made of ink, lol. www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/#:~:text=Inktense%20is%20a%20pigment%2Dbased,is%20also%20permanent%20when%20dry.
Haha! Art supplies probably take up a little less space! I'm glad she's supportive of your art. It really makes a huge difference. I'm fortunate my husband is so awesome about it!
With the Luminance I have problems with the greens. They are so scratchy! I can’t get it to blend very well. Sometimes it gets smudgy too 😫 I tried the lightfast but maybe the pencils and I don’t understand each other 🫣😂 My go-to are the polychromos. They just lay right in my hand 🤷♀️ Better than all the Derwent ones (lightfast, inktense) and the luminance. My favourite waxy pencils…Arteza Expert. No idea about the lightfastness but they blend truly excellent and lay very well in my hand. The variety of colour of the Prisma’s are fantastic, but the quality is crappy nowadays.
It's so funny how different pencils work differently depending on the person. We all have ones we get along with better! I love the Polychromos, but I get more hand cramps when I use them than I do my softer pencils. They feel fine in my hand, but I think it has to do with the amount of layering and the way I blend my pencils. So I don't use them as often as I used to, even though they give quality results. I do use at least one or two in most of my pieces for detail, but not for larger areas, and I never do a piece using only Polychromos anymore because of that. I used to have the Arteza back when they first came out, but there was a lot of confusion about their lightfast ratings back then. They were pretty good, but I never found myself reaching for them, so I gave them to my sister during one of the times I decluttered the studio. I agree about the Prismacolors. That company needs to get it together and bring back the old quality that Prismas used to be known for. I haven't noticed the issue with the green Luminance yet, but I have just lately started using them more, so I'm sure that will come up for me at some point since I love drawing landscapes!
So funny indeed! With the artritis I thought the softer pencils would be better for my hands so invested in Luminance, Lightfast and Inktense (I feel like a spoiled brat naming all these brands). For me the thickness of the pencil is apparently important, because these pencils are thicker than polychromos, Prisma, Arteza and pablo. That’s why I am really hesitant to invest in the Derwent Drawing, because Derwent has thicker leads. The Pablo are good in my hand, but I think the colours aren’t as beautiful as the polychromos. Difficult to describe but they are a bit pale? I’m learning more and more how NOT to layer and still get beautiful blends. It’s better for my patience 😂
😂 artriris! That's the perfect way to describe it! Lol I have gotten the drawers from a couple of places. Jerry's, Amazon, and Blick has them now, too! I linked the Blick ones in my description! 😊
* Think the watercolor version of Luminance from Carandache is the Museum line. Usually, for Carandache red means student version. I think that Carandache should use a system to mark the kind of client the product is designed for. Faber Castell makes this very explicit: Green for professionals, Blue for art students, and eco/red for kids/Students (till high school, I mean).Carandache is a relly food brand, with amazing products, but this red lines are a bit confusing
I agree! I think it would be nice if each company had clear systems in place like that! Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy my content! Nice to have you here! 😊
I definitely don't have as many as you, but I have only really been using pencils a couple of years. I love my Polychromos and I have the 120 set of those and also the full 100 Inktense. I do have the 132 set of Prismas too. I have wanted Holbein and Caran d'Ache too, but I probably wont get those now, since I have way more pencils than I can possible use. I have the Brutfuner pastels (their holbein copy) and I also now have a Brutfuner 520 set, which are fairly cheap in quality, but for the price they are decent. Clearly those won't be lightfast, but that's fine. I have some other Faber Castel and Derwent sets too. Polychromis are definitely my favourite :)
I have never tried the Brutfuner colored pencils, but I have heard some good things about them! Polychromos are wonderful! I definitely have more than I need, but it can be so hard to resist buying more supplies! LOL. I have been being pretty good lately as far as purchases go. I have been trying to focus on using what I already have.
@@CautionArtistatPlay I understand it all. I keep buying more and more too, and I think I've also got enough for 3 life times 😂 But I also just ordered a couple of things today. There is no excuses not to create what I have. I don't mind having a little too much of everything. I've acquired a lot so I could have variety and I can pivot easily and do different mediums and styles and keep improving.
@lozantoninocreations I think that's a big part of it for me, too! I love jumping around and doing different things. I like to have options. It's nice to have different things on hand so that I can just grab and go when an idea hits me on a whim!
20 years using coloured pencils here, and lol I have no where near as many as you do lol (than again, i moved half way around the world and couldn't take everything with me😛)
I can’t use just colored pencils anymore because of nerve damage. I only use on top of watercolor. I gave my prismacolors to my granddaughter. A lot of them are the berol. Because I’m older they are all the older prismacolor, including discontinued colors, and I bet she has no idea how lucky she is, lol.
Haha! No kidding, the Berol pencils are a dream. She definitely got some beautiful pencils! Sorry you are no longer able to work with pencils. I'm glad you found a medium that works for your current situation!
Hi Shana! I really enjoyed this video, as I am a colored pencil and pastel artist. (I'm looking forward to your upcoming pastel video!) I'd like to see you do a project with the Albrecht Durer pencils. I agree with you on so many things...I love Prismas and so glad you were fair and gave the pros and cons of them. I also think the Luminance are scratchy. And I agree that the Pablos work great on sanded paper. (I like Lightfast on sanded paper, too.) What do you do with your pencil nubs? I try to use mine until I can't sharpen them anymore but then hate to throw them away. 🙂
Hey Michele! I'm so glad you relate to so much of what I have said! Honestly, my stubs just kind of float around in with the rest of my pencils a lot of times! Lol, I'm not sure exactly what to do with them. With the water-soluble ones, I think it would be good to get the wood casing off and just use the cores in a palette like watercolors. But with regular stubs.. I honestly don't know, lol. I kind of want to figure out some sort of craft to do with them!
I've been collecting cheap pencils for 6 years. Now I feel like trade all my collection for one full set Prismacolor or Polychromos. Too bad I can't do it. 😅

Castle Earth Luminance is THE WORST texture of any pencil I've ever experienced. it feels like coloring with a rock! Otherwise I love the Luminance line, and the rest of the colors are just dreamy to work with. but yea, if I want a castle earth color, I'll just mix it myself with other browns.
@@CautionArtistatPlay Koh-I-Noor Polycolor also comes in a 144 set. I never bought any, I think they are underrated, not very talked about. Derwent Chromaflow now has 150 colors, I think they are trying to compete with Prismacolor.
I have a hard time finding Koh-I-Noor, and the places I shop typically don't have them open stock. But I do like them a lot. I have had mine for a long time and just never bothered expanding the set. Yeah, I have heard that too, about the Chromaflow and it being Derwents way of competing with Prismacolor. I bought a set of them when they first came out before they were sharing the lightfast ratings on them. They broke like crazy, even worse than my Prismas, at at the time, there was no way of knowing which colors were lightfast, so I ended up giving them away. I'm glad they now share the lightfast ratings for them. I have also heard a few people say that they aren't breaking as much as when they first came out. I haven't bothered trying them again because I personally have no use for them within my collection.

I would love to see the Soho colored pencils, and the bruynzeel pencils. And the Lightfast information. As always, I love your videos, but I'm going to save this one, I think it's fantastic! just like others I've saved of yours, lol!😅❤❤❤
Derwent drawing pencils only come in a24 pencil set.
Hopefully, enough people will request it, and Derwent will finally add more colors! Fingers crossed!
@@CautionArtistatPlay yeah🤞🏻😄🙏🏻
Great video explaining differences of colored pencil lines. Yes would love a video of the Albrect Durer line. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I will definitely have to do an Albrecht Durer video soon!
Hi, and yes please do a piece using the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils...thank you!
Hi there! You have good timing, because that's what my latest video is about! Feel free to check it out here! ruclips.net/video/Ohb-nfH65ns/видео.html
Where did you get colored pencil cups and the so cute colored pencil squishmallow?
I got the cups from Amazon, and I got the squishmallow from Kohls! They have a whole line of Crayola themed products! 😊
Great video, just found you 😊
My first artist grade pencils were Derwent Artist, many years ago.
@rach1972 Yes! Inktesnse are my absolute favorite water-soluble pencil! They are such a joy to work with!!
Such a fantastic collection ☺☺
I'm one lucky gal! My wallet, on the other hand, is not so lucky! Haha! 💖
Yes please, Albrecht Durer video!
Hey Lynne, I have one up on the channel that I did shortly after this video! Here is the link! Thanks for your interest! ruclips.net/video/Ohb-nfH65ns/видео.htmlsi=YP-Snu-Zl8wA0Yy5
I have heard that the coloursoft pencils have the same dry soft pastel feel like the drawing pencils. Is it true ?
I think the Drawing pencils feel more like pastels than the Coloursoft do. I was never all that impressed with the Coloursoft pencils. They are alright, but the drawing ones feel much nicer to work with, in my opinion.
J adore vos vidéos, elles sont tout simplement géniales ❤❤❤
J ai hâte de voir la suite 😊
Merci beaucoup! 💖

@dina_sorrenti_art haha! I love that! Plushies so much fun! I also have way more than I need, but it didn't stop my from buying this one! Lol

Thank you!! 💖 It's so hard to resist all the beautiful pencils!
What pencil sharpener do you use?
My two favorite sharpeners are the X-Acto School Pro Electric sharpener and the Derwent Super Point Manual sharpener!
@@CautionArtistatPlay "update" got the X-Acto, game changer! I was using the tiny manual ones. Thanks for the info!
@Gypsisoul1111, you are very welcome! So glad you are enjoying it!
I have my mother's Prismacolor pencils that are Berol and Eagle, from a long time ago. Love having them and being able to use them as she did.
That's lovely and warms my heart to hear! I'm not sure I have ever had the pleasure of trying the Eagle ones, but I have heard good things about them!
Colored pencils are the best, easy to control, & don’t make a mess. Great for a small art space.
Absolutely! They are so versatile, too!
Wonderful information! Thank you!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
I enjoy using colored pencils over watercolors too! It definitely speeds up the process!
I want the stuffed pencil! 😄
I got it from Kohls! They have a bunch of Crayola themed stuff! 😊
I'm hooked on prisma because I've had them so long.and I have the biggest selection. I have other sets but prismacolor is like family lol
I totally understand that. I started with Prismas, and they feel like going home again when I use them!
Wow, I love it! My take away is I can double my space by stacking my pencils
Yes! The drawers are a lifesaver!!
I will post my storage solution in Clark Fine Arts discord
I'll go check it out!!
Somehow I am not surprised that’s the take away lol but to be honest I thought hmm how many more pencils can I add to my drawers that are just single layers. Great minds so the saying goes…
@ClarkFineArt, haha! I had to take the foam padding out of some of them, especially the Derwent, since they are thicker!
The really can’t tolerate a long point. But I’ve had a couple be more breaky than others. But I do love them.
Yeah, that's the hardest part about using soft pencils. They are easier on the hand, but harder to keep a fine point on!
Inktense is also permanent when dry." And then when asked if they are dye-based or pigment-based, they answered:
"Inktense is pigment based, but its unique formulation produces vibrant colours and washes." They are a pretty interesting and unique product for sure!
Here is a link to the FAQ's so you can read more about them if you'd like. It's also where I found out that they aren't actually made of ink, lol. www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/#:~:text=Inktense%20is%20a%20pigment%2Dbased,is%20also%20permanent%20when%20dry.
Great video, you have an amazing collection, im lucky my wife is very supportive whith my art supplies, not so much with my guitar collection : )
Haha! Art supplies probably take up a little less space! I'm glad she's supportive of your art. It really makes a huge difference. I'm fortunate my husband is so awesome about it!
Yes please on the Albrecht Durer.
Noted! I will have to try and do that sometime soon, thsnk you for the feedback!
Scratchy pencils in an expensive set is a dealbreaker for me
Yeah, it's certainly not pleasant!
With the Luminance I have problems with the greens. They are so scratchy! I can’t get it to blend very well. Sometimes it gets smudgy too 😫 I tried the lightfast but maybe the pencils and I don’t understand each other 🫣😂
My go-to are the polychromos.
And yes to the FC Albrecht Durer 😁 Queen: where did you get these drawers?
😂 artriris! That's the perfect way to describe it! Lol
I have gotten the drawers from a couple of places. Jerry's, Amazon, and Blick has them now, too! I linked the Blick ones in my description! 😊
@@CautionArtistatPlay well…I really do have artritis 🫣
I loooOoove derwent drawing
If only they would add another 12 or 24 shades
I know!! I wish they would add more colors! It's a beautiful pencil line!
Also, I just arrived here. Very good content!

20 years using coloured pencils here, and lol I have no where near as many as you do lol (than again, i moved half way around the world and couldn't take everything with me😛)
Yeah, moving will definitely make you cut down on the non-essentials! Lol
@@CautionArtistatPlay That's a good idea!

Yeah, a lot of browns can be dull or transparent. It can be hard to find a good one sometimes.
It's so strange! I'm glad I'm not alone in my experience! You're right. The other colors are amazing to work with!

😂😂😂😂😂 I see no problem!
Sometimes some colors are naturally scratchy due to the pigment that was chosen, it's annoying but worth it for the lightfastness.
Yeah, I just find it more noticeable in the Luminance line than others. But they are beautiful pencils.
