  • I finally succumbed to a new set of Derwent Drawing pencils! I show them swatched out and compared with similar swatches from my other coloured pencils (in particular Prismacolors, Polychromos and Luminance), then do a drawing with them.

    I love that your reviews involve a painting of some kind. Ironically, it's something that's rarely seen on youtube. Most people consider swatching a review, which it isn't.

    This bird is probably the best thing, as an image, that you could have done with the pencils. He is spontaneous and seems about to take off flying, no great burden of greater detail. It's alive, that's all. Reminds me in spirit of Japanese ink drawing of small birds, a little, in spirit.

      In some ways it's like doing pencil over the top of a watercolor wash, but you have more control, and can 'wash' the pencil out as much or as little as you like.
      Yes, I wouldn't usually use them on their own, but wanted to show for the sake of the video, what they can do on their own.

    I really appreciate watching you sketching. Let me please give you some hints with your photographic device:
    1. set the focus manually or it continually changes focus trying to get your hand instead of the paper
    2. set the exposure manually or it tries to make what's under the exposimeter reagion of the frame result as GREY and it changes as you move your hand - exposimeter are set to give the correct exposure for mid grey. if your subject is white you should overexpose, if it's black you should underexpose -.
    3. similarly decide yourself what whitebalance gives the more accurate result or it changes similarly with the exposure when your hand moves.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Год назад

      If I'm doing a detailed, more realistic pencil drawing (not that I've done one for ages now), then I'd blend the first layers, and maybe some details after that, just so it's as soft looking as I'd like, then built up sharper detail on top. If I'm doing a more sketch-y look, I probably wouldn't use any, and leave the white of the paper showing through.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  Год назад +1

      Thanks! I'm afraid I don't really like doing either of those methods - I just prefer to use solvent to blend. Without solvent, I guess I'd just keep layering colours till I liked the outcome, regardless of whether it had reached the point of being burnished or not.

    Nice drawing of a bird. The pencil set looks suitable for portraits. Are the pencils worth it for the vast majority though? Here is why my answer is no. One reason is that they can't be found indvidually locally as the vast majority of sellers only sell Derwent as sets. A person can't be expected to keep buying sets when it comes to replacements. Where they can be found as open stock they work out a bit on the expensive side which might be why retailers choose not to sell them. With both Faber Castell and Caran d Ache being the leaders in quality and price, Derwent would do well to bring the price down. More sellers might then think about carrying open stock. Then they might be worth thinking about.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! Where do you live? They are readily available for well under £2 in the UK.

    • @stevejones1682
      @stevejones1682 6 месяцев назад

      @@helencryer thank you for your reply. A few years back, Spectrum Art Supplies would create their own open stock. That might have been cheaper than for them to buy in open stock. I used to use the Artist and Studio pencils but was persuaded to move over to the Faber Castell Polychromos. Pencils4Artists currently sell the Drawing pencils for £1.95, but then there is the postage on top and the risk of breakage. They are based in Dartmouth. Amazon are a lot dearer. I don't think they are intended as a professional pencil as the Artist and Studio pencils have a larger range and are more expensive individually. I live in Birmingham, where you would think Derwent open stock would be easy to obtain. I am sceptical of the Drawing pencils being lightfast as they have been producing the Lightfast range since 2018. Derwent don't say the Drawing pencils are lightfast on their web site and the pencils don't show any indication on them for lightfastness either. Where the drawings are fixed and kept out of sunlight, I don't think lightfastness is really an important issue though.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  6 месяцев назад

      Cult Pens, Jackson's Art, Crafty Arts, The Art Shop are all cheaper than that currently. I tend to wait long enough till I have enough in a shopping basket not to pay any postage. The Derwent website does talk about Lightfast ratings of the Derwent Drawing pencils - you have to click on the full colour chart PDF. They use the Blue Wool Scale.
      It's not important for sketchbooks, but I like to know, as I sell framed art.

    • @stevejones1682
      @stevejones1682 6 месяцев назад

      @@helencryer The only shop there I've heard of there is Jackson's which I understand is based in London. Those shops might be useful to some but certainly aren't local to me. A link to that chart would be useful as I can't find it on their web site, but there is an external one I've found which states as you have said . I can't help but wonder why they don't state the grading on each pencil.. The Drawing range has always been small and was extended to 24 in 1998. I think it was. The Lightfast range is 100 and introduced in 2018. As they aren't interested in extending the Drawing range maybe they will cease production of that now.
