That's why I always say patience is the most important skill to learn for making art. When people say things like "I could never do anything like that", I always ask how long they have spent on a single drawing or piece of art. The response is usually between 5 minutes and 30 minutes, sometimes an hour. When I tell people that anything Ive done that I'm proud of has taken no less than 8-10 hours, and the hyper realistic drawings up to 300 hours. Anybody can make art, its just a matter of desire and patience.
@rolandserafini You're so right. The last really good piece of art I drew took me 10 hours over 2 days. When my teacher said; "That is a good drawing." I knew it was because he didn't compliment easily. Another drawing I did took half a day, and complete concentration.
This was very helpful. One thing I needed to learn and I am grateful I did, and that is that it's ok if the art doesn't look good right away, or even in the first 80%. I have been rushing the results by trying to burnish too soon to get the end result way before it was layered enough for that.
Very true. I belonged to a group that met once a week. We had a model, and we worked in various mediums, so I was able to see the artists' work at all stages. Everyone's work looked quite horrible until the end
This is amazing. I've always been so intimidated by colored pencils because I felt like they had so little blendability. This is exactly what I needed to see. Thank you!!
I could try this for 30 years and never get there ☺️☺️ you’re amazing and I love your video ! You just have a natural sense of what to do ! Amazing talent !
Good honest assessment of the process/movements/pencil pressure. This helped me get an understanding of what to do now that I’m just starting experimenting with prisma.
This was wonderful! I'm going to try this out. I'm listing the Prismacolor colored pencils used below, feel free to add/correct any 1084 Ginger Root 1005 Limepeel 912 Apple Green 941 Light Umber 922 Poppy Red 911 Olive Green 947 Dark Umber 945 Sienna Brown 1002 Yellowed Orange
I love it so much. You are so professional and meticulous. I especially appreciate that u don't colour with hard pressure. I really like u and I will subscribe
I am stunned by the colour, very excited by the beautiful work you have achieved with a colour pencil. I will check out the rest of your videos and tutorial. Thank you Mary
Wow..You are AMAZING!!! Love the Video's You make!! I do have arthritis in my thumbs so I now can color very softly.. I am/was a heavy hander.. THANKS!!!🙏🤟❣
one thing i can add is u can use chalk pastels for that initial layer to get some color down. very easy to apply, no white of the paper showing through and solid initial layer, then a spray of fixative is optional but u get a solid surface to work on
I do plan on starting coloured pencil again. Though, I do also plan on blending them with a solvent and layering. I do watch another artist who does just that with her coloured pencil to the point it really looks like a painting.
I drew this pear as well! Although it was a while ago and I was using polychromos rather than prismacolor. I really like how yours turned out! You’re very patient with the layers. It’s important to be patient but I struggle with it so I only do colored pencil art when I’m in the right mood😂
i've been trying for a long time.. I don't get the colors right.. When I try layering it just becomes mud.. never looks like anything Im trying to draw.. I don't get it. Im about to just give up
@@zinta1 something that might help you is looking into color theory. Basically with colored pencils it’s easy to layer colors on top of each other that might just give you a muddy result. If you’re working with paint it’s easier to tell which mix of colors makes mud! Don’t give up:)
Thanks so much! I know what you mean, colour pencil has to be one of the slowest medias and it doesn't come together until the very end. I don't paint but if I'm feeling impatient I always turn to my pastels for that 'quick win' feeling 😀
@@zinta1 Try watching Drawholic here on youtube, they're very good at layering and I think if u watch them and see how/which colors they use to layer over each other will also help you understand which colors work with each other when layering as well
Wow. Absolutely loved this tutorial. I dont have these pencils. Only the derwent studio, but hoping to increase my skill level so I can eventually spend a bit of money and get some really good ones xxx
Thank you for your wonderful video. The only thing I would like more information on; are the names of the Prismacolor pencils you are using as you go though your demonstration.
I don't tend to use solvents and spirits for blending very much. I have nothing against them though - They can be good for creating certain looks and can save time on large areas. Everyone's different of course but I like the control I get from mostly using pencils to blend.
When you're doing that general color blocking and as you get down into the more solid colors, are you taking into account the reflected light colors as well? In the reference photo the pear is placed on a turquoise blue background and there is some blue light reflected onto the bottom of the pear. Would you add blue tones there or is your drawing just looking at the pear itself and ignoring the background reflected light from the colored background?
how did you literally just use 6-8 colors and do that entire drawing… i’m blown away but also like confused as to how this even works 😅😅 guess i need to just start trying
Hello Gemma. I hope that you are one of those that actually read comments as I have a question. I noticed in this vid that you use brown and not black on the green to create depth. Could you explain the reason for not using black? Thankyou, Derek.
I certainly try to read and answer as many as I can! I do like to use browns and greys for shadows where possible, I find it's a much softer and true-to-life way to add darker areas. True black isn't all that common in nature and it for me it can look quite harsh if used in a realistic drawing. I go into more detail on this in my recent black cat drawing video where even black fur is mostly made up of dark greys and deep blues, with black only being found in the very darkest areas.
Gemma do you have one for this with polychromos!??? Would love to see one this was so helpful!! thank you ur doing awesome thanks for all your hard work
Thanks very much! Definitely check out my guide to blending where I drew an apple with Polychromos. The concepts from this video and that one are really similar and there's a lot of cross over 😊
To each their own. I used to color this way until I started tattooing over 20 years ago. In tattooing we don't have the luxury of layering or else we will chew up the skin. I quickly learned that I was previously just simply afraid of commitment. And now I can't unsee it. Whenever I see someone layering colors like this, I see a fear of commitment. Once you realize this fact and start pounding the color in fast and hard you will be amazed at how much richer and how much quicker your artwork becomes. Blending is not only achieved by layering it is achieved by hand pressure. Just my 2 cents.
for sure, but I wouldn't always say layering is a fear of commitment, sometimes it depends on what depth/shade/hue of color we're lookin for but I also get what you mean lol
Both approaches , it depends on what you want. Tattoo! Wow, there's a surface I haven't tried. For paper consider using Bristol Plate. Press hard and apply thick. Then scrape all thickness off. The paper will hold a good deal of pigment which will look like magazine printed surface.
I tried this on Strathmore Bristol Vellum with Caran d'Ache Luminance and I couldn't get it to blend like yours. Should I have used the Bristol Smooth instead?
Dont you think Prismacolor set lacks good brown colors? I think there are a lot of different greens and blues but very few browns and reds. Especially lacks the cold brown colors and pinkish red colors.
I know what you mean! I often feel like I'm missing my Polychromos when I use them. Maybe it could be fixed by ordering a couple from the open stock selection of the full range, but I haven't tried yet.
You could get a bigger range of the colors if you buy a bigger set, I just bought a set of 150 and the browns and reds came in a nice big range of color 👌
I used to go from darkest to lightest and the artwork looked more dark, now i wanted to go from light to dark but some of video suggests to go from dark only!
hi i just started using prismacolor and i got the level one flower step by step outline and shading set but i haven't been able to find a lesson video for it anywhere do u have or would u be able to help me find a link for that one?

Thank you for such an informative video. I am new to colour pencils and this has helped me with how to layer properly
I do the same thing with my drawings, I start off with the lightest color to the darkest. Prismacolor is the best pencil brand!
