- GODZILLA 1998 is divisive to say the least, taking the GOD out of Godzilla. But the animated series actually has a much better reputation from fans. But theres a lot of people out there that haven’t given it a chance, since it's connected to the 1998 film. So today we’re going to ask the question, Should you give Godzilla 1998 another chance?

How many of you watched this show back when it was on Fox Kids every Saturday? If you’ve not watched it, hopefully this video convinced you to do so!

Cool
Hi(:
Nice video DangerVille.
I watched it in Cartoon Network Latino America. Man the hype that intro gives is amazing!
I haven't seen it yet but I've heard it's really good. Also I like the 1998 film it's a good movie but the Godzilla design is terrible.
Godzilla the series is by far the best animated series featuring Godzilla, despite being the animated sequel to the 1998 Godzilla movie. I remember watching all the episodes on YT back in the day when I was around 9 yrs old.
I concur it was an Amazing series and really helped me get into the Godzilla franchise.
Same I used to watch it on yt when I was 7
Same
Loved the movie and series
Definitely better than that 70s Johnny Quest Godzilla cartoon
FINALLY!!! Super glad that this show is getting the recognition it deserves. This show definitely represented Godzilla a lot more than the movie did back in 1999. Honestly I’ll even put this show up there with the Batman animated series. Godzilla the series is seriously underrated and I hope they find someway to make him fit into the MV.
I can o
Relate and agree lol
I agree 100%
yeah
I can’t agree more. But you got the wrong year. The movie came out in 1998. 1999 was the year Godzilla 2000: Millennium came out.
Same
Watched this entire series, never missed an episode EVERY Saturday morning on Fox Kids in the late 90's to it's end in 2000. Highly recommend to any Godzilla fans or Giant Monster fans who haven't seen it.
The series was actually pretty cool, seemed better than the film, I still think Zilla is a good monster
This series stands out for the variety of monsters shown, making it possible to make a solid Zilla franchise
It was perhaps the greatest Godzilla show ever made. I remember first watching it when it was still on Netflix. It is the the reason I got into Godzilla and I always wished it came back the clone wars did.
That was a great series. One thing that caught my attention was how intelligent Godzilla was. He was really good at problem solving.
I have seen it but I think if they did a fusion of Zilla from the Godzilla: Ruler of Earth comics and the 1998 Godzilla series and make him a "distant cousin" of MV Godzilla, I think it would work real well.
Toho toyed with that idea with Zilla and Biollante being an implied subspecies of Godzilla Earth in the prequel novels, so I can see it working with MV.
yeah
This show was amazing. I have the entire series on DVD.
And the same showrunners also worked on two other shows I loved: Men in Black: The Series and Extreme Ghostbusters.
Is Zilla Jr. bigger than Zilla? Yeah the scale was all over the place in that show, but he didn't look bigger
yeah
Hey fellows! As a part of the character design team for the animated series, thank you for discussing our show. We had a good time making it. 😊🤜🤛
This series is fantastic. The characters, plot and monsters are very solid but nothing compared to our Lord and Savior N.I.G.E.L.
“NIGEL NOOOOOO!”
Zilla Jr. is actually confirmed in the show to be immune to conventional weapons and has even withstood alien weapons without visible harm. The only thing he lacks is Godzilla’s regeneration factor which is an important ability Godzilla needs cuz that’s what plays a part in what makes him nearly-indestructible. But at least Zilla Jr. is close enough to be considered “Godzilla”.
Zilla jr regenerates bruh.
@@jonahmoran3751 He has a healing factor. Not a regeneration factor. And his healing factor requires him to be in a comatose state. Not very good in combat.
Godzilla regenerates in this show lol
@@TrashyJayys It’s not regeneration. It’s a healing factor. There is a difference. Healing factor heals wounds to a certain degree. Regeneration factor means he can grow back a body part or regrow tissue and repair damage without leaving scars. Zilla Jr has to sleep to heal that quickly. Not combat effect. Godzilla in various Toho films like the Heisei, 2000, GMK, Shin, Earth, Ultima, Minus One and such, can regenerate in mere seconds to even instantaneously. Even during combat. They all vary in how effective they are.
This series was a big part of my Saturday morning cartoons back when I was a kid glad that it's getting more recognition nowadays.
Me breakdancing to the kickass opening theme🕺🕺🕺 crazy how the "worst" Godzilla movie spawned the best show.
I personally feel like the change of the Godzilla creature makes it way more interesting. He may not be a normal Godzilla, but his speed, the amount of eggs it lays, which can each have the same amount by itself, and it just being a normal, but powerful dinosaur.
I actually love the zilla series, and what's actually cool about zilla is that he kinda looks like a hybrid between godzilla and a raptor and i find that pretty dope. and besides if it wasn't for the 1998 zilla we wouldn't have the monsterverse series
This show for real is so dope
I don’t need to be convinced, this show was my introduction to Godzilla, and I loved every episode I watched.
That series is lit.
I remember when my family still had Comcast, I would always go On Demand frequently just to see what new episode would be on to watch.
And oh my God this show was so fucking good and did Zilla justice. The new monster of the week, seeing Zilla in action against each of them, holy shit man.
Is there any way for a huge group of people, Godzilla fans, to come together and have a voice to show Toho or anyone of movie-making power that we DO want more from the 1998 Godzilla character???
Godzilla The Series should get another chance, and have a season 3 with more iconic monsters added to the series.
Godzilla the series was my introduction to godzilla as well as giant monsters in general, I remember picking up a copy at a library when I was like 8 back when people actually went to them.
Hello there!
general @@clevertroodon6396 you are a bold one
The last episode I remember from the animated series was when they brought back the original zilla armed with milllatary weapons
Ever since I read and heard about Haruo Nakajima's thoughts on the 1998 Godzilla movie one thing I always wondered about what were his thoughts on the Godzilla the series as that was exactly like the Godzilla films from '54 to '75 where he fights other giant monsters and even saved the Earth from an alien invasion and even fought a MechaGodzilla even though it was the '98 Godzilla resurrected as a cyborg.
Currently rewatching the series. I love the series and glad i bought to complete series when it first came out.
I always wanted to see a season 3 for this series
I agree I wouldn't have known about Godzilla if I didn't see the 1998 film I grew up on that movie and I always cried when the baby Godzilla's died every time
I absolutely loved this series when I first watched it. It was one of my favorite shows to watch every morning on Fox Kids.
The monsters fights were especially entertaining every time I saw them.
I love this show, the monsters the characters, and Godzilla himself. And while I know that it will probably never happen due to the Monsterverse and other projects happening at the moment, I hope that this show gets some form of continuation. Like in comic books or even a new 3d animated series, again I know that it will never happen but still, I'm hopeful that this incarnation of the character will get more recognition.
The fact the original art composers who worked on Men in Black TAS also worked on Godzilla TAS is unbelievably incredible. Now the music composer for Godzilla TAS was none other than Jim Latham, who by the way was a big fan of Gargoyles TAS, wanted to incorporate the trumpet 🎺 sound with a futuristic upbeat tempo. And thus Godzilla TAS thematic opening was born.
Can you guys imagine if Legendary makes an animated series with the same writers of this show and animated by Bruce Timm. The Genius behind the DCAU.
“IIIIIIIIII NEEEEEEEEEED IIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!”

@@jdpragmatic8644 Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece. This would be Bruce’s next masterpiece.
Yes! I would watch the hell out of it!
ye!
That would be amazing!
honestly if they were to make another sub species, thus being zilla, and show his experience in the hallow Earth, i think that would be cool as it's a chance to show off some other little things and questions in which us fans have about the hallow Earth from the perspective of a monster who resembles the gojira species
It's incredible how this TV series still represents the best animated iteration of the character. It's truly a hidden gem.
Talks about a Godzilla being a dog.
Serizawa: "We would be his."
Talks about a Godzilla like creature.
Me: "Titanus Doug anyone."
This show did the whole Titans thing way before the Monsterverse even became an idea and made Zilla Jr live up to the Godzilla name more than the 1998 movie did.
This series more than made up for the 1998 “weak” depiction of Godzilla that was given by the movie. And I love that it didn’t try to reboot it and sweep it under the rug. It actually incorporated the movie and even the original Zilla.
Like you guys, my first exposure to Godzilla was this movie. I loved it and I still do. But of course it makes sense that people would be pissed about how he was portrayed.
What this series got right was giving Zilla all the power of other Godzillas: the atomic breath. They made him bigger than most of them, then kept the sleek design to have him stay a fast, agile, leaping, digging, swimming theropod. He’s still able to be injured and killed so you know there’s risk involved.
Legendary portrays him as primordial and responding to atomic threats...but even the original movie all those decades ago depicted him as the result of atomic bombs and a result of humanity’s arrogance, not the counterbalance to our arrogance.
Zilla first came about as a mutation from the radiation with no powers, but was still powerful. They decided to have his heir be more powerful like a rapid jump in the evolutionary process that’s been mutated by radiation. I think that’s a cool portrayal.
Even Legendary Godzilla is considered to be one of the few if not the only one of his kind to have that amount of power, so the series isn’t too far off from our current Godzilla either.
There are four reasons why this show is way better:
One, it made the titular monster more bada** than his biological parent in the film version.
Two, none of the human characters were treated like one-dimensional ants just for the sake of seeing mindless monster action, like most Kaiju movies so far, despite some stereotypes.
Three, it does add monster fights to this universe, while blending in the story.
And four, most of the episodes do fit the morals of the Godzilla saga related to God, nature, and mankind's sin.
(However, when it comes to Monster Wars, I thought the episode is overrated. Why? Because these aliens were completely capable of controlling nature by themselves without any consequences. I know they had advanced technology and I know this episode paid homage to Destroy All Monsters, but War of the Worlds (novel) depicted the Martians being defeated by their own evolution unsuitable on Earth when they think their advanced technology can control nature, and none of the invaders had some sort of superpowers (despite the telepathic communication, maybe social media or radio communication, in-theory) that made humans an inferior species. Is there a Godzilla movie where even sapient aliens couldn't control nature no matter how hard they try, making them as equal as human beings?)
I agree
As an Godzilla/Monsterverse Fan, I still wished the writing, actions & human characters would’ve been handled better tbh..
(both kong and jia are still cute tho XD)
Let there be a live-action based on that show, with Jean Reno reprising his role
I love they focus , design and develoment of the mutants animals in this iconic animated series!🐲👍
Well I will say it’s better then the 1998 film because there’s no Matthew brodrick for zilla to ruin his career
Nice, another video about Godzilla: The Series. I like the show with it's monster fights and human characters. 🙂👍
This series is what made me a Godzilla fan. The movie itself was meh but this series was kick ass!
With you. As someone sed the problem with the movie was they called it Godzilla. This series may not be the Tokyo smashing bahemoth Toho gave us but this Godzilla made it's owne mark in history.
I started watching Godzilla back when he started in black and white and was six when the cartoon came out man I was obsessed
I've been saying this for years and finally, someone talks about it
what I loved about the series is that they were a bridge to the Zilla movie and Monsterverse. It is as if the Legendary monsterverse is made from this series. The thing about the Zilla movie is that it simply is a King Kong movie but as the lizard instead of ape. Then the series builds upon that mutation where the son of godzilla didn't just became a big sized monsterfied iguana but an actual monster. The series progressed the movie into a realistic standpoint to a more fantastical standpoint like the kaiju films were. It explained as to where these monsters came from rather than just saying "yeah, here's the back story." It puts in the perspective that Zilla is just the precursor of these kaijus. An incomplete monster. This explains why there weren't any other monsters as well till later on. Also the Gman in the series is just a teenage mutant ninja lizard so I find it hilarious with how it was progressing from King Kong to TMNT to TOHO.
I started rewatching all the episodes recently so fun how you came up with this haha !!
Thank you for this! The show acts as a sequel to the 1998 Godzilla movie, which may have been a Box Office hit, but critics ripped this movie apart.
Thanks for mentioning this series so often and bringing Zilla up back so often. Really guys, thank you so much!!
I would love to see a series that paid homage to the older Godzilla series but was somehow still in the monsterverse maybe a female Godzilla something that could look different aestheticly from Godzilla but also share similarities to him
I actually have this series on DVD and watched as a kid.
For me I feel it ended a bit anticlimactic, but man the animation and art design is really nice. I think the intro to the cartoon is still so memorable!
There was also a KONG series around the same time (probably trying to bank off the reinvigorated interest in a "new" Godzilla)
I found the series at a thrift store. Once I saw the box I double checked and all the dvds we thier. Man that was a finde. Never know what I'll finde in old dvd colections.
Well the ending wasn’t the chronological ending. The actual last episode is cash of the Titans or whatever it’s called.
Welp, I still have the complete series on DVD. Never did continue it. Maybe someday down the line this year I’ll give it a second shot.
Haven’t even watched yet and I already know this gonna be a banger
Man it was fun watching that as a kid. Good times. The way you talked over each other at 6:06 was funny.
Love you vids.there amazing keep it up
This cartoon was one of those rare moments where an animated spinoff does better than the movie it’s based on. I don’t hold too much animosity to the 98 movie in my opinion it’s still a good monster movie but not a good godzilla movie. The animated series blew it out of the water giving everyone what they wanted to see in the beginning
Atomic Breath ✔️
Indestructible ✔️
Fighting interesting new monsters ✔️
Great fight scenes ✔️
Worthy of the name Godzilla
I also think a cool way to introduce Zilla into the Legendary Titantverse, would be to make Zilla Godzilla Jr. Like the radiation that Godzilla absorbed over the years has affected Jr to where it kinda deformed him (thus why he would look like Zilla). And if they want to do a "Destroyah kills Godzilla" story, Godzilla Jr needs to be different from his dad, and not be a carbon-copy, otherwise there's no point to killing of Godzilla Sr.
Zilla in the monsterverse would be super cool he would be an allies of Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and Kong against other monsters
A discerning fan knows that the fact that this is the Tristar version is no reason not to like the series.
This series and this one captures the traditional essence of Toho and although its design is still different from the traditional one, as such it is not bad for itselves (I even like to conceive it as a second species of Godzilla).
I can call this one Godzilla (Jr.) without any problem.
This was the first godzilla i knew about.
YES WE NEED MORE GODZILLA.Jr representation (yes not zilla jr he isn’t Godzilla but he’s the closest you can get while still being related to zilla)
Damn, a topic to hit right in the nostalgia.
Finally some quality content!
I love Godzilla the animated series too because it's awesome and badass to see Zilla jr defeated monsters and protect his human allies
I’m making a fan fic continuety of this so it will have a perfect finale
I watched before the pandemic and it surprised me that there were more episodes that I remembered when I was kid and watched the first time
Tristar Godzilla made me a Goji fan.
Also thanks to my mom😊
I recommend people watch the episode from this series called Future Shock. It’s on RUclips.
I remember when I think the first season was on Netflix and it was the only show I ever watched on Netflix unfortunately it was taken off but for awhile my young kid brain was captivated
Godzilla the series was fun. I wish it lasted longer than two seasons. I wonder if anyone remembers the mid 2000's live action kaiju series Surface. It may not be Godzilla but it was fun for what it was.
Episodes of This show definitely pop up on RUclips frequently. Go watch the first five or six, you won’t regret it.
me and zilla have some history that needs to be squashed
when I was 7 or 8
I knew about Godzilla through my dad showing me the showas and heisei era of Godzilla media
bear in mind that
I went to see Godzilla 98' in theaters
after I came out watching the movie
I couldn't help but feel enraged ... how an 8yr old boy like myself could be enraged by this sudden take of my favorite monster
fast forward to the mid-2000's I was a teen
I found out about the series through Fox kids or 4kids as it was called
I was enraged again not because it was good
because it was what I wanted in the 98' film that was robbed from me as an 8 yr old
but yet again fast forward in my 30's ....
i went back to watching the animated series like a couple of episodes
........ in that moment I had a change of heart towards Zilla ... something inside my heart ... told me " is he as any different to Godzilla?"
look at him fighting monsters the offspring of the Zilla of 98
look at him make a connection to nick (MC)
it may have been years apart isn't this what being a Kaiju fan is about
to feel this connection to Godzilla
to say I have ended a 20 yr grudge towards Roland Emmerichs Godzilla was not chance I would've taken if not for that series
that series changed every discomfort I had with Zilla to herald as part of the Versions of the King of the Monsters .
The 1998 film was my childhood. I have it, the animated series and I would never part with them
I need a video about the legendary guardians of the monster verse .
I would kill for an animated series like this one but taking place right after Godzilla vs Destoroyah with Adult JR
I actually loved Zilla as a little kid. I remember i wanted to buy a zilla toy for when i did stop motion films at the time. I watched the series and i loved it. It was the design i loved and it didnt kill off zilla and it even uses the zilla from the movie later in the series. It was just amazing for me personally
Woke up Saturday mornings to watch this as a kid, the good ol' days
This zilla definitely had a lot of great feats going for him throughout the series, don’t sleep on him! If anything he does indeed carry the fighting spirit of the original godzillas. Perhaps maybe a bit too intelligent… but still good nonetheless.
You say it as if being intelligent is a bad thing lmao
Actually finding it is a pain, I'm currently looking for it.
I'd settle for a reboot godamn
Awesome video btw
I love the show. I think every Godzilla fan should give it a go at least. I think the biggest factor in whether a classic goji fan would like it is whether or not they have any tolerance for Saturday morning kids cartoons. Because if you can get past that, it has everything.
Edit: I also find it hilarious how Nick and Audrey's relationship seems be going down the pan for the entire series. It's like we actually see what happens after the stereotypical action movie when the two leads hook up.... and then realise they have nothing in common.
My favorite episode was when Godzilla met Komodithrax
I watched this with my dad when I was younger we both loved it
Nostalgia man nostalgia
I can see Zilla having a new series in 3D or 2D.
You guys should also talk about the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla series
I saw it in parts on RUclips when I was little it was some of my first memories of Godzilla yeah I like Toho but this was the first Godzilla I saw.
List of Godzilla TAS monsters for the monsterverse
1.Zilla
2.C-rex
3.El Gusano
4. Dragma
5. Nigel
If they do make an animated series,i hope they bring back Rino Romano, that whole “we’re scientists” bit always made me smile
I loved the Zilla series but i couldn't watch it anymore when I was young bc my sisters took it away bc they thought it was annoying
Wow I remember that movie ,to be honest I rather this version of godzilla since it's the first Godzilla I've seen, then when I saw monstervers Godzilla, I was like ok......he look different, and all the monster he was fighting in 1998 was awsome, So yes it's a good anime.
Major Hicks in the animated series is voiced by the actor who played him in the film.
Yeah, I really liked this series. It actually redeemed the 1998 Godzilla design.
I think it's a really good series and agree they made this one "Godzilla" version the movie version. I like how as the series moved forward that the individual stories linked to a larger story. I liked the different monsters that were added over the series. As a G-Fan since the 70's and a father, my five year old is following in my foot steps and he labeled this version of Godzilla as "Green Godzilla:. I purchased the box set for him and me. It on our G-Watch listed.
I hated The design of Godzilla 98 (Zilla) but I was so surprised how much I loved the variant design Animated Godzilla 98 (Zilla Jr), series, story and the kaiju itself. I will always love Animated Godzilla 98 (Zilla Jr).
I used to tape all the godzilla episodes too!
Gosh I want an SHMA 98 figure, then a special color based on the animated series.
this series is why i am a Godzilla fan and got into it at all. I've got it on dvd got it for 10 bucks new at walmart about 8 or 9 years ago id of paid 3 times that lol.
