While I’m not getting my hopes up, I think he would qualify for inclusion in the MonsterVerse as a Hollow Earth Titan that is presented as a species distantly related to the Gojira family, but is different enough to qualify as it’s own genus.

I have far more respect for the original films as an adult, but as a kid I disliked how completely not scary the chubby OG design was. I was still in single digits when this movie came out, and it honestly scared me seeing it on the big screen, so I do have a soft spot for that otherwise cheesy monster movie. Still, looking at the previous versions by Steve Miner and Jan de Bont they do have more personality and fidelity to the Toho original than the 98 film. Honestly, if Sony just had a little more faith in De Bont and scaled back ever so slightly, they might have been able to greenlight a movie that pleased the fanbase at the time. Think Twister (also De Bont's film) with Godzilla.
Ironically, the 90s also saw a turbulent production for none other than Peter Jackson's King Kong originally meant for 1998,. You can guess which movie (as well as Disney's Mighty Joe Young) led to Universal pulling the plug on that initial version of Jackson's Kong. I wonder if you guys would be interested in covering that story and what you would think of a pulpier, more tongue in cheek version of that film?

Checking out the “Godzilla 3D” story, I do find it uncanny how bits and pieces resemble the ‘98 and 2014.
I thought maybe they recycled bits of it, like how 2014 and KOTM recycled bits of the '94 script. But as I thought it over, I concluded it was likely a coincidence.
Here’s the examples. They’re pretty small, but when you notice them, they may stand out.
1998: Besides 3D!Godzilla having a more T-Rex look, there was also a plot point of Godzilla having offspring - like in “Gorgo”, the infant is held captive, prompting Godzilla’s ramapage.
Like in the '98 movie, 3D!Godzilla would go on a final rampage when it’s offspring is killed…only to be killed by missiles.
2014: The main character is a military officer and a family man, returning home after his tour…only to be pulled back into this mess when Godzilla awakens.
Unlike 2014, the main character's son is part of the story as he’s kidnapped by these human antagonists, which I guess you could compare to “King of the Monsters”. The son is also caught up in the action in the stories climax and is even the one to deliver the killing blow to Godzilla.

Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante also draw from this script somewhat interestingly, mainly with the general Cold War anxiety and an accidental strike being a plot point in the former and the anti- nuclear fission missiles being used against Godzilla in the latter.
Plus, the deleted scene from G14 where the Air Force and the navy face off against Godzilla on Alcatraz is insanely similar to the 1983 climax. Safe to say elements of it found their way all through the franchise

1998 is hated because it wasn’t Godzilla. He was vulnerable to conventional weapons which is a no-no. Godzilla is immune to all types of weapons unless they were made specifically for him. And they often times fail even afterwards. Godzilla also has an insanely fast regeneration factor that heals him in seconds so even if you damage him, he would be healed completely in a matter of seconds and keep on coming. And the lack of atomic breath and other nuclear abilities is the other reason.
The design, ability and character are not there. That’s why Toho made him into a separate kaiju and called him “Zilla” instead. He will never be considered an American Godzilla incarnation anymore.

Well, the specific iteration of this Kaiju that appears in the 1998 film and its animated sequel series *is* still trademarked & copyrighted under the name ‘Godzilla.’ You can retaliate against that till the cows come home, but that still stands to this day. The specific iteration of this Kaiju that _Toho_ owns is trademarked and copyrighted as ‘Zilla.’
But I do understand where you’re coming from (😉).

And I'll actually give Toho props for deciding to rebrand it as its own kaiju, even if it was only originally to get revenge on it, because it's allowed others like IDW to give it a bit more credit and increase its popularity.
Plus, there's just something surreal about seeing Godzilla and Zilla fight.

Being that is more of a cut-n-paste movie of old films with very little new stuff and Minilla talking, etc, it's easily the worst one of the series. G '98 is a good proto-G mobster film with the animated series sequel being the proper version of Tristar's G. And I'm here for all of it. From the old and new comics to the old and new cartoons to the films, I find something good in all things G (that I've actually seen).

Yes, 98Goji was what got me into Godzilla. If I hadn't seen it as a kid, I wouldn't have mistaken Godzilla 2000 as a sequel and watched it, which was the first Toho Godzilla movie I ever saw. Putting that aside though, I still really like this iteration, especially the Animated version. Sure, he's very different looking, but I actually really like that about him. It's as I've said with Legendary's Godzilla designs, I'd rather have a Godzilla that's distinct in terms of its appearance rather than have one that's just a copy of another. And I know many classic Godzilla fans get riled up when someone called this version 'Godzilla', but he is Godzilla to me. He is what got me into the series, and I'll always be thankful for that. Even though I strongly disagree with the director on his stance of Godzilla, I can easily separate the monster from the creator, and I love this monster.

I had the same experience with Godzilla as you did. I had seen a few of the English dubbed movies because my dad recorded them on VHS when they would play on TV (still had the old commercials too). So when Godzilla 98 came out in theaters I was so stoked to see it and honestly I still love that movie and Zilla. You can call it mental gymnastics, but Zilla's concept is easier to swallow if you think of her as a separate species of Godzilla. Like an Eagle and a Hawk are both birds, just different species. Godzilla and Zilla are both Gojiras, just different species.
