  • When TOHO sold the rights to Godzilla to Sony in 1992, they originally intended to produce a film that was much closer to the spirit of the originals. Where Godzilla was an unstoppable force, and fought other giant monsters for supremacy.
It appeared as if the pieces of the puzzle were coming together to make a film that lived up to the iconic name, Godzilla. So what happened? Today we're going to analyse the Godzilla film that you NEVER got to see.

I admit this version sounds amazing, but I wouldn’t trade it for the 1998 film because it was my first introduction to Godzilla.
And I’m still having hopes for that version and H.E.A.T from the animated series to find a way into the next phase of the monster verse , even if it’s completely impossible.

Unless it's humans being ripped apart, they could've gotten away with that imagery as a PG-13 movie if it's the monsters. I mean King Kong ripping a T-Rex's jaw open is less horrific if it was a man ripping another man's jaw.

This would've been a better film than what we got from Roland, which sadly was in a hand of a studio called Tristar who messed up and should've sticked to the original idea and gave them the budget instead of forcing a director who isn't a fan of Godzilla to direct it.
But alas, it needed to happened or else we would've never got what we have now; The Monsterverse. And as sad this never made it to screenplay, it truly was something special in the end to be remembered.

I remember reading about this film adaptation in G-Fan magazine in the late 90’s after the release of the ‘98 film. The magazine had pictures of the creature that Godzilla was to fight. Jan De Bont, who is a fan, would have been able to pull this off if an agreement on the budget was made. But this was not to be and Roland Emmerich’s adaptation would have Toho make more films faithful to Godzilla until the 2014 film and the advent of the Monsterverse.

Would there have been sequels or an animated series like the 98 series? So much potential that was unfortunately never realized. Several plot elements were reused in Godzilla 2014, as in both films where Godzilla is destined to save the Earth from a far greater threat than him (The MUTOS and the Gryphon respectively), both films feature Godzilla beheading the enemy kaiju, and the military believing that Godzilla is the bigger threat in both films until Godzilla defeats the main threat. The only differences are while the Godzilla in Godzilla vs The Gryphon does seem to deliberately attack human settlements, specifically the Japanese Kurila Islands and decimates the military's forces willingly when attacked, while Godzilla 2014 was never shown to deliberately causing destruction in any location that was featured in the movie and actually avoids conflict with the military, only causing hindrances and damages to the army through collateral damage.

One time before twitter bans me, I talk about that unmade goji and really wanted to exist desperately. That's green and brown skin that looks like it came from the sewers and that crispy scales, all that is what I wanted most! But toho ruined it by saying that's copyrighted!

98's Zilla was my first Godzilla film...but I enjoy the older and Legendary Pictures series as well. Also, aside from a few changes...doesn't this sound like the plot for Legendary's Godzilla film?
Edit: Ok, I should wait until the end of the vid.

Would’ve loved to have seen that come to life; Godzilla 98 was a major disappointment. Also I’ve been a big fan of y’all’s channel and have been watching most everything you’ve put out over the years an I gotta say I love the visible growth and evolution of the channel. Everything from the updated theme (which I think is the best iteration yet), to the way you design the flow of the videos. Anyways keep it up I can’t wait for more content!

    • @spades77

Thank you. This 94 version was faithful to the original and not some sorry excuse of a monster borrowing the name of a real monster.
Thanks to the idiot to make Zilla we had to fight to the nail just to get Godzilla 2014. I don't blame Toho for hating us for that. I would too. But you got idiots out here thinking oh it's only the hardcore fans who feel this way. If it's only the hardcore fans then why do we had to fight for a new license for so long?
Toho literally told legendary they have one chance to get it right and if they failed. Toho said they would never allow Godzilla's license to ever leave Japan ever again. So yeah, 98 was a great movie 😑

What a great video! I had only read about this back in G-Fan back in the day and I loved the design of Godzilla then and love it even more now-wish they’d somehow make an SH monsterarts figure of this design-I liked it even more than the legendary design-which I like quite a lot!

I still like the '98 movie for being typical 90s cheese. It's NOT "Godzilla," but still entertaining.
Has there ever been a figure or maquette of Stangoji released for purchase? Cuz that would be awesome.
Dang, the MonsterVerse really did borrow a lot from this screenplay.

I would've loved the hell out of this version of the movie and it probably would've been better received by fans. Admittedly though, I didn't like the new backstory by making Godzilla a thousand year-old lizard made by aliens that turned on them as a protector for Earth rather than being created or awoken by an atomic blast that affected his appearance and was a metaphor to atomic weapons. Also, I saw the storyboards, and 9:07 had Godzilla shove The Gryphon into the Twin Towers. (At 9:20) The other tower is leaning until minutes later in the story. (Yikes!) But on a side note, the director was a huge fan of the character and seemed like he really wanted to convince the American audience that the character of Godzilla could be taken seriously. Also, the director Jan De Bont's dream cast for the two lead roles were Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton and the movie was planned to be released in 1996. Of course, he ended up making Twisted which came out that year with those actors as the leads. So if you're a fan of Twister, you're more likely to have seen what the movie could've been if the Tornado were replaced with Stan Winston's Godzilla.
