Wow, I'm Seriously Impressed (Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid 2024 Review)

- Detailed review and test of the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, including price, fuel economy, interior, family features and more.
The new-generation Hyundai Santa Fe controversially drops diesel power in Australia but picks up a standard turbo petrol hybrid (at least at launch) which is similarly frugal but more refined. Our fuel economy results were particularly good. Later, a non-hybrid 2.5-litre turbo will join the range.
It's not perfect, though, with limited towing capacity at 1650kg braked and some annoying safety warnings, though you can turn them off or down.
Rivals to the new Santa Fe include the Toyota Kluger, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-80, Skoda Kodiaq, and more.

Chasing Cars makes Australia's most independent new car reviews. Авто/Мото
This guy knows how to review a car , Others should take note.
Because he talks like a professor not like a fan boy. Most others talks shit he doesn’t
Thanks. Just trying my best. Your support is much appreciated.
Totally agree 💯 %
Especially with ride & handling and fun factor!
@@boozedad3773 an example being that stupid Matt Watson, always biased and injustices other brands
Go buy one. Your transmission will be done within 60 to 90 days. Or, you can buy an electric Hyundai and the battery cost more than the whole car! Or millions of recalls for engine fires.
I wouldn’t buy any of those cars but feel free to buy a new one👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
Tom Baker is one of the best car reviewers in the world. Very watchable. Great work, mate!
Wow, that is very kind. Thank you for your support.
I’ve never seen a review from this man, but I’m hooked. No gimmicks, no fluff, just a straight forward, thorough, well-thought out review.
The front end 👍
The rear end 👎
Yeah, I think I’d reverse it into most parking spots so I see the front as I walk away 😂 But still, that upright rear end gives the most amazing third row headroom, as I showed.
I think if they'd moved the tail lights up a bit higher, it would be a much nicer rear.
All in all, though, it looks like a tempting proposition.
@@chasingcarsin fact it’s wider and longer than the fortuner so good job Hyundai
I’ve had two Santa Fe’s. 2016 with 90,000km and a 2019 with 120,000km. Not one issue with either one, still have the 2019, burns no oil More reliable than any of the four CR-V that I’ve had.
I must say, hyundai nailed it in terms of storage, use of space, family features and looks.
The rear design also looks better in person than pics, but those rear indicators are located dangerously low.
If ANCAP are serious about safety, then they should also focus on correct placement of lights and indicators rather than going gaga over the super-intrusive beeping stuff , that most of the drivers just want to turn off .
Totally agree that the rear indicators are still too low, far too low.
💯% agree!! ANCAP have lost the plot abit. They need to regain focus on actual safety and not these ADAS systems that are essentially redundant when drivers deactivate them… because in most cases their implementation is so bad, that they constantly inundate the driver with unnecessary distraction.
Yeah, this boxy design looks great. It’s the tail end design that I can’t digest
G-Wagon has lower taillights as well. Where's the concern about their lights? But I digress.
Loving my new 2024 Santa Fe Hybrid. Hard to beat 600+ miles to a tank of gas! (In America) Very plush and comfortable. Best SUV for the price in my opinion.
I’m indifferent to Chasing Cars but I come over here to watch Tom do his thing.👍
😂
Back to the drawing board for that droopy rear end.
What were they thinking with that rear end?! Reminds me of my parents old Datsun Bluebird 🤣
I took one for a test drive today, absolutely love it.
Wow. An excellent, thorough review. It's an impressive vehicle.
Thanks Rodney.
Great review. I’m converted. Hyundai are making some fantastic cars!
great review Tom
Thanks!
Never understood why Hyundai / Kia mounted the rear indicators so low. Can't see them indicating at times
Great review, looks like a brilliant family car. Be good to see a base review when you get one
Will organise that.
Good review, great car and I'm buying this in 2024!
I like this, it's classy looking inside and out.
Thanks Tom, it's such a pleasure to watch any of your reviews
Glad you like them!
I love the new design and I think the back looks awesome!
Beautiful review,no bullshit
Kudos for pronouncing the name correctly..."Hyun-DAY". Excellent review. Keep up the amazing work!
If I had a small family I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this. Beautiful car
Thanks for the great review Tom! Can’t wait for your thoughts on the petrol turbo plus new generation Kodiaq. The current Kodiaq is great to drive.
Agreed. The first-gen Kodiaq is such a tough act to follow. High hopes for the new one.
Another great review. Cheers.
A rear end that would look at home on an early 2000s SsangYong Musso. Just dont ever approach it from the rear and its a good looker.
Now that you mention it, yeah
Excellent review..
My pick for those not wanting a 7 seater, the all new Hyundai Tuscan hybrid AWD mid size SUV due in Australia later 2024
Fantastic review. I test drove the calligraphy trim and I was very impressed. Owning the Sonata N Line, which has the annoying 8 speed DCT (it's not smooth in heavy traffic), the new Santa Fe is significantly more refined in Hybrid form. I love the exterior and the interior is incredible.
When is the Full review of the Sealion 06 coming, keen to see how Tom rates it?
Keep up the Great work Tom and team👌
Thanks! I am driving the Sealion in around a month, so will share my thoughts in full at that time.
What location are you testing the car? Its gorgeous !
Test drove yesterday Really nice car and heaps of power. The back isnt great but it grows on you. I thing the right colour might make a difference. They designed it like that to create the maximum space and functionality of the rear storage area over looks..
Agreed, it is quite colour dependent I think. I suspect darker colours might suit best.
Been watching plenty of Santa Fe reviews. Initial impressions is the tail end looks odd. However it does start to grow on you! And it looks better on the road than stationary.
The old Ssangyong Musso design never grew on many and it was a total flop
We’re strongly considering this as a car that can haul our two (very) large dogs, but the early looks and specs of the Kodiaq refresh coming later this year look great as well. Very keen to see how the two stack up, hopefully we get to see more of the Skoda soon.
Expecting big things from new Kodiaq, but the Santa Fe definitely also deserves consideration. Which is a compliment.
@@chasingcars any murmurs on when we may see / hear more on the Kodiaq?
I need to know: the third row AC controls - are they controlling both the 2nd and 3rd rows? or only the 3rd row?
I have a 2020 Kodiaq and am looking at replacements ( I really shouldn't, but that's off topic!). I recently drove a 2023 GX Kluger and came away quite impressed. I'm less interested in having a 'sporty' ride these days and want something quiet and 'nice' to drive - I find the NVH in the Kodiaq to be not that great and on the 20's it can get a bit bumpy on the roads where I am. How is the build quality on the Santa Fe/NVH?
I like the look, the back tail lights are different, I think if they moved the tail lights up higher the rear would look fine, the interior looks nice, and fuel usage impressive for a big SUV, the bronze looks nice, but surprisingly the White looks very nice
Love it
It has a full size spare, this alone makes it better than 90% of vehicals on the road.
I thought a lot of people would like that.
In the US the hybrid calligraphy does NOT have a spare so I would double check at your dealership
Sure, but the Australian one does. Our test car is a full production specification vehicle, though it is of course Aussie-spec.
Great review, as always. I like this car, but baulk at the 10,000 km service intervals. A case of cutting the price, then make $ back on servicing?
Very fair point. A bit costly and the service intervals are annoyingly short.
I do like the interior.
When does the petrol only version arrive?
Why newer versions of Korean cars have indicators so low at the back?
really stupid design decision, ugly and sometimes dangerous
Im planning on buying this trim, Calligraphy hybrid, here in the States. I'm going to look into ordering the kit to mount a spare underneath. I had assumed since it isn't available here with the hybrid that maybe it had something to do with it being a hybrid . Apparently not.
She's certainly well equipped that is for sure and most angles look good...but my God the rear on that is an abomination of rear vehicle design😮😮😮
Looks good 👍 what’s the cD on that car ?
Somehow better than the old model, Hyundai claims. I’ll try and find the Cd.
Nice
I like the front but can’t get past how low those lights at the rear are - I think it would look better, more balanced and have beefed up look if the lights were higher at the level where the SANTA FE letters are.
The rear reminds me of a strange SsangYong wagon from 2008 - they were weird looking. Does it look better in person?
It’s nowhere near as bad as the Stavic
Can a front seat passenger see the Apple CarPlay screen ? It looks a little tilted towards the drive ?
Really nice and detailed review! Well done!
I have order Calligraphy - Earthy Brass with Black interior! Looking forward for it to arrive! 😊
This crème interior looks cool, but opted for black as wasn't sure of maintenance needs with kids!!
not bad 8.00 seconds 0-100 from a 2 tonne vehicle is respectable. I was a bit iffy about the power figures
The captain chairs...you show a manual operation to slide rearwards, yet the video shows electronic operation..??
they made thins look really nice from every angle, except from the back, why?
Those fuel figures are pretty amazing for such a big boxy 7 seat brick. My 2L 4cyl hatchback has averaged 6.5L/100km over 30,000km of mixed urban and highway driving!
Yeah that figure is probably optimistic....I think around the 7's l/100 would be about right
Great review. Looks impressive but interesting knowing the Hyundai CEO a while back had said their customer wanted their SUVs to look like an SUV and not like vans.
I almost bought a toyota kluger hybrid. The dealer guy was nice and wanted to give me $500 discount I was asking for but his boss was being a jackass and didn’t even talk nicely so I left and bought this brand new elite version which is still cheaper than kluger and very much luxurious interior. Very impressed and was little bit nervous when I bought it. Waited for just over 2 months and when it arrived some of the features was not sure going to be in elite it was all there like lane changing cameras and dash light multiple colours (my favourite one). Like this guy said it Elite version (second most expensive) one is good enough for me and it was $10K cheaper.
That back glass on the tailgate should really pop open to unload smaller items, etc.
Totally agree!
No pop to open. It will cheapen it. It needs to slide down, like a Toyota 4Runner.
if the tail light height matches the front lights as it should, this is a game changer, i wonder how many sales they'll lose from people that hate that back end, in particular the low light placement. I'd buy it otherwise. Everest sport it is then.
I wish they make diesel mild hybrid on this inline 6 just like mazda
Good review - but I think the new diesel Sorrento is a better option especially given the towing capability and proven engine !!
Why not the base model over Elite? Only major omissions I see are cloth seats& lack of passenger seat electrical adjustment - don't seem worth $7k.
Anything I'm missing?
Note I said Elite for family buyers. Cleaning up spills from cloth seats is way harder than off leather, which Elite gets. I think the $10k step from base to Elite is justified: leather, Bose, the dual wireless charger that works well, in-built nav, acoustic and solar windshield and front door glass, heated wheel, better headlights, a proper rear occupant sensor, better lane centring… not just bling I’d suggest, some useful stuff there. Quieter cabin, easier to clean and premium audio would put it over the line for me…
Is it worth the extra cost over an ICE VERSION.? How many years does it take to recoup the additional cost in fuel savings? This is not a criticism of the car , just the Rationale of PHEV.
Any thoughts\preferance vs the Sorrento hybrid?
Santa Fe’s interior feels well and truly a step above, but the Kia (on previous gen platform) remains good buying. If I wanted diesel I’d go Kia, if I wanted I’d spring for Santa Fe. Probably wouldn’t bother with the Sorento PHEV.
Thanks. That's the impression I was getting.
it reminds me of the car from national lampoons family vacation.
Needs more wood panelling.
Is it better than Kia sorrento GT.?
Styling wise looks like a cross between a Nissan Cube and a hearse, but I wouldn’t be seen dead in it.
Ouch!
Strange. I think it looks better than anything from Toyota.
I think you've nailed it. I''ll get a Black one and Moon Light as an Uber Hearse Driver.
@@scottmackenzie318maybe it will be the vehicle of choice for funeral undertakers for the deceased to go in style
Rudd would have no problem making this review in Mandarin
I love how Hyundai / Kia don't give a shit about some traditional design language etc. They just draw whatever they want, unlike German competitors
Kevin Rudd reviewing cars. Now I've seen it all.
Kevin Rudd could never
Saw my first in person the other day. Hate the look. We are on our 3rd Fe and over 400000km, all diesel. No more for me, no diesel no sale.
Ok bye then😂
Brilliant review. But the Olive green (forest green) plastic interior is offensive. Love the the white leather, however it would be a lot nicer with grey plastic, rather than the olive green. Hence the Pecan brown interior would be my pick.
Really need you to start calling out these outrageous prices. 55k for a base model is insane.
I would call it out if I thought it was bad value but I don’t. It’s now a big, refined car with a sophisticated turbo hybrid engine, good dynamics, a nice interior from a reputable brand - was never going to be the cheapest on the market and I actually reckon $55,500+on roads is fair for the base hybrid model. Appreciate it’s not the Hyundai pricing of Excel times.
@@chasingcars very out of touch of you. Like the channel and you guys do good reviews but the car companies are clearly still price gouging and the ridiculous price hikes we've seen over the last few years have clearly been normalised for you. We should not accept this as consumers though and you should be outlining the price hikes since COVID. Your response sounds like you're a Hyundai PR rep, I know you need to be close to these companies for access but they need to be called out constantly on the proce gouging and you can play a key role in informing your audience of that.
@candlelarbra5212 Picking on this man for something that is happening at EVERY CAR BRAND!! The cost of living is going up. Groceries are going up. And you want him to call Hyundai out for the world's inflation crisis? It's price is still competitive towards it rivals despite the inflation increase. What I need for you is to go back to school and study Economics 101.
I firmly disagree. I am not out of touch on this point. I tell it like it is from an independent perspective. Not interested in Hyundai marketing or “keeping close” with anyone. The new Santa Fe is considerably bigger and considerably better. It’s now a fuel-sipping hybrid as standard. The improvements are plainly visible. Cost of entry is up $9k (for now, until the non-hybrid arrives), but base spec is also way up. Old Elite hybrid to new Elite hybrid? A three percent jump from $63k to $65k before on-roads. Plenty of examples of shameless price-gouging out there. I call them out when it is appropriate to. This isn’t a case that falls into that category.
@@jraheemjefcoat429 Lol picking on him? I'm sure he's heard worse than legitimate criticism being an internet car reviewer. I'm calling out the trend more generally of car reviewers not calling out price gouging by manufacturers. They are supposed to be advocates for consumers. I think you need to go to reading comprehension 101.
No diesel - no way
An excellent family SUV. I like the styling apart from the rear, it just does not work for me at all. Also, I would not touch a hybrid drivetrain outside of Toyota, unlike Toyota this is not proven and the tech support is probably not as strong. The turbo 2.5 is probably more my style if it had a torque converter auto.
I guess the biggest competition would come from its bigger brother Palisade. With massive sales on right now, you would get a bigger diesel Palisade at a cheaper price. Maybe a few months later, but cannot justify the purchase of the new Santa Fe right now. BTW, does the new Santa Fe use the same 1.6T Hybrid as the last generation one?
Definitely worth considering Palisade as well, though I don’t find it especially attractive or as nicely appointed. Bigger, though, and diesel option will be appropriate for some.
Agreed. The boxyness of the Palisade is proportionally attractive like those ultrasized Suburban/Navigator/Tahoe/Yukon which FBI/CIA/DoJ uses standard issue vehicles seen in the movies
The Palisade will be even bigger with the new model redesign for 2025. Always remember, when a vehicle of lower model class grows in size, the flagship model becomes even larger. But the current Palisade still has more space. Santa Fe is for a family of 3-5, in my opinion. The 3rd row is really meant to carry an extra passenger for short trips. Palisade gives more seat capacity up to 8. More people to haul and space.
Nice review. Not a fan of the back. However, price/quality suberb. They will sell a lot of units in Europe. Ozzie market, not sure.
Always go for the facelift version. It’ll be better in many ways.
We unfortunately ruled out the Santa Fe straight away when factoring what we typically have in the car with 3 adolescent children. If there was an extra foot of floor space in the rear then it would be no-brainer but we can't look past the lack of space once the 3rd row is up. Bit of a shame.
If you're talking about legroom it is ample, certainly not spacious, in the third row for an adult. The second row is definitely spacious. Now if you were talking about shoulder room you might have a point, but that would be for full sized adults (6ft plus men)
Price for Base model is $64k , the one you showed is just below $90k.
Nope, confirming my prices are correct - don’t pay dealers over the odds if they’re trying to charge you more. NSW driveaway prices:
Base hybrid 2WD: $60,634
Base hybrid AWD: $63,784
Elite hybrid AWD: $70,609
Calligraphy hybrid AWD: $81,109
With every option as seen here: $82,994
solid review, however the word choices are rather odd
Hybrid efficiency is an illusion tough, you will pay more for the battery replacement. Might as well get the more powerful engine if possible
Ugggh. I was sold on this vehicle until they mentioned the sheet bose stereo. Like why
I thought the stereo was good enough.
I think they were shooting for Range Rover with the styling and missed
Kia EV9 for me, this is nice as well.
That Kia costs 2X as much
I really like the EV9 but yeah, it’s $140K-odd for the similarly-equipped GT-Line vs $81K for this Calligraphy hybrid. Huge step up for the EV in this case, won’t make sense for most.
A great review Tom well done!
However I still think that mid $80k plus is way too much for a Hyundai, even something as good as the new sante fe is. Hyundai just doesn’t have that brand appeal to be charging that much money in my opinion.
Thanks! But I don’t know if that point is true anymore. Virtually every Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and many Palisades seen on the road would have cost their owner more than $80K driveaway, so clearly they saw value at that price. Still, as I mentioned, the Elite (~$71K DA) could be the sweet spot.
Looks like a great car but that backend will cost them a lot of sales
Surprising HYUNDAI hasn’t been offering 7y warranty like it’s KIA brother has for years now
Is Santa Fe equivalent to carnival?
No. The Kia Carnival is a van. Meant to be good though. Think it might fit even more people?
The Carnival’s platform is fairly common to the old Santa Fe, but yes, it’s a van versus an SUV. Carnival is much more spacious again.
My only concern here is what happens when the family and luggage are loaded into this - how good will it be then? Drop a trailer on the back with some gear in it and then think again. Lets see the previous gen Diesel and this back to back before we all get excited. Then again, people at this price point are most likely taking overseas holidays with their family - so lugging the punters to a camp site in a fully loaded vehicle is not on the top of the priority list. Its more about having something that looks like a Land Rover/Range Rover but actually will not break down.
We got three big guys and cargo into it, call it payload of 350kg plus fuel. Admittedly not a massive load but it went fine. As for towing, haven’t tested it because frankly this wouldn’t be my first choice if towing was high on the priority list. We know it can do 1650kg but if I needed to tow genuinely regularly I’d just go something like an Everest V6 Sport etc.
No plug in hybrid????
Not yet at this stage
Disappointing towing capacity for such a large vehicle. Otherwise great interior. Exterior is growing on me but is lacking something IMO.
Are my eyes tricking me, or does this look quite similar outside and inside like a Range Rover?
Freelander styling from the front, back is pretty unique though.
Steering wheel is quite similar.
Those Range Rovers/Land Rovers scores 5 stars for design and looks but zero stars for reliability and durability
@@yslee1401 Agreed, I've heard they're not very reliable and the drivers (ar least in Melbourne AU) and truly awful.

True. But seriously, phones are gross.
This or Toyota Highlander?
Not sure where you get your figures for petrol and diesel. Diesel right now is 1.83 and petrol is $2.29. I get that the petrol is at its highest but it’s not much different at its lowest
Where you will miss the diesel is towing 1650kg is a joke
I get my figures from publicly-available data regarding retail fuel pricing in Australia. In 2023, the average 91 octane retail price nationally was $1.898/L while diesel was $2.020/L. In 2022 it was $1.842/L for 91 and $2.075/L for diesel. Source: AIP.
Give a reason why still buy a Toyota kluger with 80k+ and 6m wait.
Because it will have a much better resale value
Probable resale, old powertrain tech with proven reliability, service network would be some reasons the Toyota would still be on the test-drive list.
The passenger seat has no access to the screen at all
It does, I had passengers and they used the screen
The rear is ungainly. What were the designers smoking?
Wait for the BYD Shark DM 5-0 technology you will also get a tax benefit.
Quirky designs might not hold their value well in the used market. Remember SsangYong?
