There was an actual loop for serge in the end. If you sac the unbridled growth and activate heliods symbol of his church in response, you can draw the growth with its own ability. Then cast it flr the enchantress draw and repeat
Just about to mention that. But mad respect to Serge anyway: I had a Jhoira Weatherlight Captain cEDH-ish deck for awhile, and piloting a deck like that where it wants to generate a giant board state, and then looking at it and going, "Okay...SOMEwhere in this absolute pile of permanents, I have a win. Where is it?" It's a tough question to answer.
@@chifii oh absolutely, I dont want to discredit serge, he played all the games very well in my opinion. I just wanted to mention so we can all learn for the future!
You can also cast Unbridled Growth on a non-basic land and wasteland that land in response to both the cast and the cast triggers of Argothian Enchantress and Sythis to be able to Hall of Heliod's Generosity Unbridled Growth back on top before drawing it off of the cast triggers. This will have you lose the card draw of Unbridled Growth but it doesn't matter since you still have a net draw of one.
I really like the little achievement pop-ups. it also helped me understand exactly what Serge was doing during the first game. I didn't catch on until the achievement popup
1:10:00 There is a deterministic loop with sacrificing the unbridled growth and holding priority to put in on top with hall. After you draw it and the stack is clear you just wasteland your hall and replay it. Cast it for 2 draw triggers, this way you don't depend on drawing enchantments from the top of your deck. (likely not necessary with thinning all the lands out of the deck, but for sure could come up)
This has quickly become my favourite series on all of RUclips. Loving the inclusion of Ben-takes as the voice of the audience. He does a great job on the edits as well
I love this series. The gameplay and banter are entertaining, and the way Serge and Wheeler explain their thought processes and talk through some of the more difficult decision trees are educational.
I think the line for infinite draw would be to sacrifice the Unbridled Growth, hold priority with the draw on the stack, and put the card on top of your library with the Hall. Reset the lands with Wasteland, recast Unbridled Growth, and repeat. I believe that gives you infinite draws.
So i just wanna say i hope they keep showing and talking out loud about there choices during the games cause its super nice to learn the reasons behind their choices in a game
there was a deterministic loop for serge at the end to draw the whole deck - sacrifice the unbridled growth, hold priority, use hall of heliod's generosity to put it on top, draw it to its own ability, then replay it and draw new cards off the cast triggers - but that's easy to miss when there's So Much going on
It's cool to see because they're absolutely vicious. They have to be in order to make the cut. It's also fun to see the ones which were designed for a multiplayer format, but become absolutely cracked in a 1-v-1 match. The Chaos Defiler is the rare example of both. It's 5 mana and absolutely vicious, but only in 1-v-1 since when you have to choose at random it becomes much less scary.
13:02 doesn't Serra's Sanctum tap for 3 on its own (albeit all W, so you do still need to tap the Mox to bring out Champion)? Enchantments: Sythis, Oath, and Journey?
As the premier north 100 viewer in the format I’m here to say me me memebot, thank you for having me it’s great to be here. This comment does in fact fit into aristocrats
Question for Ben or Serge(or anyone), if they check comments. What decks do you recommend as starter decks about equal in power to one another for 2 beginners to the format?
there's a deep satisfaction in seeing all 5 colors split, but represented between two decks it feels ~cool~ considering the concepts of what mana/color identity is, in magic lore these identities (Grixis vs Selesnya) is especially harmonic since they're allied colors within their identity, but completely absent of their opponents. good shit.
So happy to see these decks I don’t have a can lander community so I watch yaw and also watch all the set reviews and I’ve heard about these two decks and now I get to see them
@1:09:45 No, there is an actual loop. Sac Unbridled Growth, use Heliod's Hall in response put the Unbridled Growth on top, draw it with it's own ability. Reset Heliod's Hall via Wasteland. Recast Unbridled Growth, Draw 2. Start Loop Over again. Serge can draw any even number of cards.
13:07 Minor Mana Mistake: Sythis is an enchantment. Oath of Nissa & Journey to Nowhere means Serra's taps for 3 white and the Mox makes 4. This meant Serge had another spare mana this turn. He could've used the white for Ground Seal and had a green left over to keep enchantment spamming.
I’m not saying I root against Wheeler but he always seems to be the better player in these matchups and I want to see good games so I root for Serge. Serge playing strongly means Wheeler has to be on his game and his tight lines are educational, exciting, and fun to watch by every measure. That said, “Go Serge!” (Who is also a great player and good at explaining all of the weird card interactions that come up in Canlander).
19:27 doesnt Serge have an enchantment that prevents cards from being played or enter from the graveyard. Wouldn’t that not allow the urzas saga to come back here via crucible of worlds?
at 1:09:00 cant you sacrifice unbridled growth for cost and with the draw trigger on the stack activate Eiganjo to stack it to the top of your deck so you draw it off its own draw trigger?
On how to "loop that over and over": 1st, cast Unbridled Growth, after it resolves you activate it's sac ability and IN RESPONSE you activate Heliod's Hall to put it on top, then resolve Unbridled Growth's sac ability drawing it.
I guess maybe we'll see a little N100 ep on any of the Aftermath cards, but incase we don't how do you think something like the new Filter Out helps decks like Grixis here against enchantments for instance?
This video taught me how Cost Reduction and paying for spells works - re:Affinity + Lotus Petal. I've been playing for over 25 years and I'm just not discovering this
I'm not sure if this is correct, but isn't the loop: Sacrifice Unbridled Growth; In response to the draw trigger, use Hall of Heliod's Generosity to put Unbridled Growth on top of the library; Draw Unbridled Growth; Perform the loop to untap Hall of Heliod's Generosity; Cast Unbridled Growth, draw from the enchantresses; Repeat.
Just a quick question, there's been videos in the past of serge playing "sanctum stompy" and im curious if there's a difference between between that deck and this one.
For Serge’s combo turn, it is deterministic. You cast unbridled growth, draw off the enchantress triggers, then once it’s on the battlefield, sacrifice it to draw, but in response use hall to put it on top of your deck, thus drawing itself. Wasteland reset the hall and do it again. Also, in game 1, Serge had 3 white mana off Serra’s Sanctum the turn after Sythis and not just 2 since Sythis is an enchantment herself.
@16:20 I don't think there is a point when Wheeler can float a colorless. Placing a lore counter doesn't use the stack, and the saga is sacrificed as a state-based action, so there's no point where he can float a mana during his main phase.
To clarify for you, when a saga reaches a chapter, the trigger of the chapter is put on the stack. When a saga reaches its final chapter, the third chapter is put on the stack, and then once it has resolved SBA have you sacrifice it. If a saga has more lore counters on it than chapters it is sacrificed as a SBA without passing priority. This is in the case of Blood Moon + Urzas Saga for example 714.4 If the number of lore counters on a Saga permanent is greater than or equal to its final chapter number, and it isn’t the source of a chapter ability that has triggered but not yet left the stack, that Saga’s controller sacrifices it. This state-based action doesn’t use the stack
@@Zoomrat Thanks for clarifying! I'm confused specifically about Urza's saga I think because the chapters are activated abilities and not triggered abilities.
Cast growth, draw 2, sac growth in response to draw put growth on top, draw growth. Then sac and replay the hall. You are back to untapped hall and growth in hand.
So serge didnt have to pass, he played finale of devastation earlier which with infinite mana gives his creatures haste. Just incase wheeler could infinite in response. Just wasn't noticed
