I’d really like a hover myr pop up animation every time someone mentions the card. Or an ancient tomb rainbow animation every time they mention or play ancient tomb.
@2:00 coming back to watch again months later Wheeler is 100% right about engagement. I saw the video in the RUclips suggested feed and went, "oh Paradox Academy, that sounds fun."
The clown horn was so perfect, that even though it was previously announced, it actually made spill my drink. Not spit mind you, but it was an impressive spill.
@@DiscardatRandom tempo can be pretty good into academy, but well built abzan//WG disruptive aggro lists are so close behind it's pretty marginal. they also comes with the upside of not shooting yourself in the foot against every other archetype by playing tempo
I really appreciate the pointed cards popping up at the beginning, the visual aid helped grasp the full spread, compared to the old listeroo off the top of the dome. Thanks, presumably Ben in post!
When the balance came down it may have been useful to activate stepmom in response for pro colorless before sacking her but I don’t think it would have mattered much.
at 20:00 Serge could've let the Brighthearth ability resolve, make Wheeler invest the 2 mana to copy, then respond to the 2 Minamo abilities with the CropRot. Just removes a couple extra mana from the rest of the turn
I know this would probably be a lot of bother to organise, but I have a suggestion for introducing the decks at the start of episodes. Would it be at all possible to pop up some of the "key cards" from each deck as it is introduced, as that then gives an idea of what the deck is trying to do? This series is extremely entertaining to watch, but sometimes it isn't so clear what we "should" be looking for in terms of decks doing their things, especially if it's intended as a series to introduce new people to the format who may not be that up on Canadian Highlander staples.
this was good I been playing urza a lot running the manifold key and one ring, I noticed you didn't sac your city of traitors though when you played the land on your win turn wheeler but you had it regardless. GG
@LRRMTG would you mind telling me what type of dice you guys use in your gameplay? (specifically the oversized ones with numerals instead of pips). They are spiffy!
N100SD and Scryfall Roulette are the only MTG things that are enjoyable to me anymore. The only MTG content I can think of that involves a healthy mix of contemporary and older cards. Crack a Pack is also pretty good.
you know i would love to see a lot more Minecraft style tokens - like Zombie, Food, Ocelot, Villager etc ones. that treasure token looks pretty awesome
I’m sure different events will have their own rules on this, but by and large the format is pretty proxy-friendly, so as long as you can’t distinguish the CE cards from the regular cards face-down it shouldn’t be much of an issue.
You need to return any two cards drawn that turn. So, if you have drawn more cards by the time sylvan library trigger happens, you can return any of the drawn cards.
Sylvan Library just requires you to return up to 2 of the cards you have drawn this turn Note that if you replace the draw with something that doesn't draw you cards, you still have to choose a card you drew this turn to either pay 4 or return to the top of your library. Which is probably your draw for turn
i apologize for using commander as a comparison here but this felt like watching someone try and bring their casual deck to a cedh pod, like it's not impossible to win but the power level is so different you might as well have been playing different games.
Spoiler In Game 1 Wheeler could have won a turn earlier (after Serge sacced Boromir), rings of B with Grim monolith to make infinite mana and activate Urza as often as he wanted.
Serge, you silly man: your Giver of Ruins could have given one of your blockers protection from colourless. That seems pretty good against large colourless artifact creatures.
It's a shame wheeler's second win doesn't count due to not sacrificing city of traitors when he played academy. Better run it back to resolve the match!
on game one when ben played balance could he not have just used the key and monolith to go infinite with the rings, making infinite colorless, blue and white mana and making infinite tokens
it's a shame that voltaic Key/Manifold Key with Rings of Brighthearth is 3 mana, otherwise Wheeler could have just gone infinite with Grim Monolith and started the process of casting his whole deck.
Looking at this man with infinite colorless in game 1 with rings and monolith and he doesnt even realize it. Which then leads to infinite blue with urza
It got wasted before it could happen, but Minamo-Rings-Academy is actually infinite (Wheeler probably already knows that). When you copy the untap, you have the copy target Minamo itself instead of targeting Academy again like Serge suggested.
Adding random levels of post-production is hilarious because there's no promise for it. It's like bonus fries at the bottom of the bag
I’d really like a hover myr pop up animation every time someone mentions the card. Or an ancient tomb rainbow animation every time they mention or play ancient tomb.
It helps that Ben is a sound engineer that has years of Desert Bus experience doing things just like this - long live the twomp as an example
Dude it's kinda like banana bread at work dude

loved seeing the pointed cards appear onscreen!
I love that we get a wild mix of editing styles depending on who is running tech.
I've actually run tech and edited all of these! It depends on if I've had sugar or not that day 😂

The power level between a Meta deck and a Serge Brew makes it seem like they are playing two different formats.
Sick burn
Or is it just sad?
hypothetically the archetype serge is playing is academy's worse matchup

A Canadian Highlander Throwdown is just what I needed.

Came down to write this.
Immediately was so confused
Could have kept boromir

petition to call any deck with Thalia and the Girtrog Monster as "Hey Wheeler cand we tag you in this?"
not that it matters, but the saccing of boromir should cause a ring temptation.
And in Game 2, Thalia says the Academy comes into play tapped.
Yeah, the city of traitors was supposed to die as well. The world however, was on fire
And bring to light casts the spell, doesn’t put it into your hand I think
Wheeler references T Pain, then TF2, one after the other. High class individual. Also, point Balance, thanks.
For whatever reason the tech mic didnt record properly so enjoy the echoey background ben 😅
Challenge gratefully and joyously accepted.
Serge, cheering for you to clock more wins in against Wheeler man!
Excellent, as always. Thank you.
Been feeling sick today, really needed this.
I love watching the premier pilot of the format compete against his highly skilled opponent. It’s up to you to decide which is which
Canadian highlander is my favorite format I have never played before
The ring with paradox is cracked in half. What a cool game!
Cracked into a million pieces more like.
Always a good day when there's some CanLander
Only beaten by Can'tLander (a.k.a. Pox, Stax and so on. :P).
My only regret is that this introduction can't make the Stream Highlights reel. Perfectly done 😘👌
This is the best second monitor content on youtube.
This is straight main monitor stuff.

God, that Crop Rotation for a Wasteland was so hot
Best introduction. Bar none. 10/10. No notes.
My commander playgroup already didn't get it when I did the Ancient Tomb mana bit. Now they also won't get it when I do the Ancient Den mana bit.
It's always a good day when we get a Canadian Highlander Throwdown!
Wheeler is really feeling himself in that thumbnail.
Like he's the main character of his own children's anime

Watching wheeler play these kind of artifact decks is the best

I love Wheeler’s Pokémon Trainer pose in this thumbnail
wheeler: "I'm going to find paradox engine"
Serge: "Thats a problem."
Not that he needed the academy in that last game…but Thalia..right? Deck is silly and love to see it
'Paul, play the clown horn please.'
Never mind the magic, Wheeler is out here slingin cardboard looking SHARP

“I knew it was over when i heard “Im going to get paradox engine”
Just came across this format. Are CE cards allowed especially for the duals and power 9?

Why does Serge hate bears?
Serge loves bears. it's Abzan that hates bears.
The Abzan have had enough of the Temur and their aggressive use of bear puns in every battle.
Wheeler in the thumbnail showing how many games the match will take 😅
I dont even play magic anymore but i still watch these. Love you guys!

With sylvan library don't you have to keep the 1st of the 3 cards you draw? The 2nd and 3rd being the only options for paying life to keep
It appears that you do not
You need to return any two cards drawn that turn. So, if you have drawn more cards by the time sylvan library trigger happens, you can return any of the drawn cards.
Sylvan Library just requires you to return up to 2 of the cards you have drawn this turn

Forgot about the protection from everything bit on the one ring
It wasn't cast, so he wouldn't get the trigger.
why did wheeler sacrifice a treasure with urza on the board?
i apologize for using commander as a comparison here but this felt like watching someone try and bring their casual deck to a cedh pod, like it's not impossible to win but the power level is so different you might as well have been playing different games.
Oh good I almost forgot what day it was
I turned 30 this year, and picked up the T-Pain reference immediately. Guess I'm the target age demographic.
Spoiler
In Game 1 Wheeler could have won a turn earlier (after Serge sacced Boromir), rings of B with Grim monolith to make infinite mana and activate Urza as often as he wanted.
That costs 3 mana to make 3 mana, it doesn't go infinite. Monolith makes 3 and it costs 1 to activate the key, 2 to copy the trigger.
@@Willd2p2 my bad, I was thinking of Basalt monolith maths
@@daithomas1430 Yeah, Basalt Monolith doesn't even need the extra pieces, that goes infinite with just Rings copying its own untap ability.
Serge, you silly man: your Giver of Ruins could have given one of your blockers protection from colourless. That seems pretty good against large colourless artifact creatures.
Is it me or did Wheeler miss a "Rings of brighthearth & basalt monolith" combo?
"Sylvan Library effect"
"Dear God..."
"There's more..."
"No...."
Why is Wheeler doing the Ken win pose
No Collector Ouphe against Wheeler? I'm a bit dissapointed
Where is the kitaki wars wage
after the sylvian library where he had two lands serge should have been at 17 but he when back up to 18
I can't figure out why Wheeler sacrificed a Treasure instead of tapping it with Urza.
Needed red mana to cast the wheel
17:00 he uses it for red mana for the Wheel of Fortune
24:42 he doesn't sacrifice any, he just lowers the die to indicate they're tapped
It's a shame wheeler's second win doesn't count due to not sacrificing city of traitors when he played academy. Better run it back to resolve the match!
Thanks for this good magic the gatheringing
The one ring finally breaking paradox engine.
Serge announcing has Savannah as a "green white land" and not as a "greenie whitey" had me tilting.
Surge forgot to pick a ring bearer when he sac'd boromir
Giving Wheeler sounds effects was a mistake 😂😂😂
I insta-clicked when I saw "Paradox Academy" so, yes, good engagement technique 😅
Historic Brawl players watching this are shaking.
Can confirm
on game one when ben played balance could he not have just used the key and monolith to go infinite with the rings, making infinite colorless, blue and white mana and making infinite tokens
It doesn't work with Grim as the untap is 4 cmc
And you're even on mana if you use the key
Hands, lands, then things that Bands
it's a shame that voltaic Key/Manifold Key with Rings of Brighthearth is 3 mana, otherwise Wheeler could have just gone infinite with Grim Monolith and started the process of casting his whole deck.
Hate bears? But they’re friend shaped, Serge :(
Wheres the food >:(
Find me in the grey Cadillac I’m in the bed like ohhhhhh.
Oh that's why they call him Wheeler
ummm actually the academy should have came in tapped game 2 because of thalia....not that it mattered at all
I do prefer watching the deck pop off without paradox.. that card basically says "try to lose now we dare you", crazy card
Serge needs to be announced with that horn from now on please!
hey Serge fyi your step mom gives a creature protection from colorless as well
oof that deck is revolting aint it
Looking at this man with infinite colorless in game 1 with rings and monolith and he doesnt even realize it. Which then leads to infinite blue with urza

Great Game!, I love the guy that won
LOL he did the thing HONKHONK
North 100 merch please
They're wearing pretty near matching shirts again.
