Never played Canlander but I always watch these videos. Excellent presentation and tantalizing gameplay might just get me to proxy a few decks to play with friends.
Thanks for having me, it's great to support you.
A neat line: in the attack at 41:00, if Serge exiled one of his own cards from his own graveyard with the trespasser's attack trigger, it would grow the Laelia to 4/4 so it would trade instead of dying cleanly. He could also use deathrite to grow it further as well.
I spotted that too!! Even better though by growing Laelia to a 4/4 with deathrite shaman exiling from his graveyard it trades with the first 4/4, shrinking the other construct to a 3/3 with 3 damaged marked on it, killing it too.
Hah. I was just gonna comment that
Serge also could have just swung with one construct the next turn because of the exalted trigger. He would have always had a bigger construct than wheeler in that case which means he doesn’t have to trade both in on that attack.
I think the reason he didn't do that was because of the Nihil Spellbomb, but that also creates an interesting line. By forcing the Nihil spellbomb, it shrinks the 2 karnstructs on Wheeler's side and makes them trade into Laelia and Graveyard Trespasser.
I know this was said as a joke because Canadian Highlander doesn't have sideboards, but Opposition Agent does not allow you to view your opponent's side board. 720.4 specifically prohibits viewing information about cards outside the game that only the person being controlled can see (i.e. sideboard cards). This also means that you can't control a player to grab sideboard cards with wish effects. You basically 'fail to find'.
NEEEEERRRRRRD
This is a newish ruling which was the point of the joke.
Thanks to yalls content I've convinced my friends to try canlander! Sleeving up a few decks tonight and bringing them to my lgs tomorrow
My cat knocked over my iPad and it zoomed in on wheeler’s foot just as you introduced James on tech. Took me a while to realize it wasn’t a bit.
Names now: this is called Jund because it's named after the colour combination refering to one of the shards of Alara which is a well loved set from 16 years ago
Names then: this is called Czech Pile because it's a pile of cards some Czech players played
funny enough, Czech Pile is a much newer name than Jund - it came around in 2016 in the late stages of Deathrite Shaman in legacy
It’s less about when it was named, and more about which format made it famous. Legacy decks are famous for their non descriptive inside joke names
These two weeks felt longer than usual, thank you for being here it's great to have you
An hour and 12 minutes of canlander!! I didn't know it was my birthday today
Can't express how much I love the table talk on this program. Just so fun and informative at the same time.
I absolutely love watching midrange v midrange grinds like this. There's so many opportunities for tiny decisions to build up into courses of action that sway the outcome of the entire game. Thanks for putting it together.
Whoever edited this, well done!
I want a shirt with that quote. "James will do."

Thanks for having Wheeler, it's great to watch him play!
My favorite segment on the channel! Currently I just play cEDH but this content makes me think that this is how Magic should truly be played. This should be more of a thing! Thanks for these North 100 Showdown videos.
35:35 Terminate should be in exile and not a legal target. It was countered by Force of Negation. Spells countered this way are exiled.
Same with the card countered in g1, can't recall if it mattered but when both players have delirium cards, it's important
Honestly, it's a testament to professionalism that this video isn't two hours long
Okay, helps if game one is Ben practicing Muay Thai on Serge
For my own learning, @42:15 could Serge have exiled a card from their graveyard to make Laelia into a 4/4? Which would then clear both karnstructs due to state based actions?
I didn't know this was what I needed today but it sure did hit the spot. You guys are the best
Been watching Wheeler's streams and have heard Czech Pile more than once. Excited to see it in action!
Serge was far too scared not blocking the dreadhorde arcanist in that last game, specifically to dodge a deal 3. The snowball it provided: additional card draw, which flips Tamiyo, which makes the Ragavan not deal trample damage with shadow spear. Also that turn the delighted halfling really didn’t need to be tapped if he is concerned about blocking with questing beast.
Hubris is a hell of a thing
These are always amazing to watch, but I could NEVER do this! LOL. It's like watching two warriors look at each other and knowing who will win before the battle starts.
this new lighting setup is actually incredible
Oh man, I love these James on tech episodes!
Me after the first few turns: "Stop, Wheeler, stop! He's already dead!"
Excellent, as always. Thank you!
Pyrogoyf.
CZECH PILE? I am sold without even hearing the intro.
at 55:50 Serge suggests that The One Ring would win Wheeler the game, in this case however it would not, because Questing Beast's Damage can't be Prevented ability allows you to get through protection. Experiencing this in gladiator was the first time I stopped thinking of Questing Beast purely as a Villain.
30 seconds in and Ben is unhinged - I know its gonna be a good episode
The way Mr. Argyle signed that Deathrite with two different colors of ink is beyond sick
The more unhinged the intro, the more I love it.
Coming from cEDH, I am traumatized into fetching on my turn when I'm 99% sure I can't get Oppo'd. Trying to end step or middle of someone playing black who is untapped and has 3+ mana available is always a "I'm gonna get got here aren't I?".
The more I watch this show, the more I crave a format where most of the cards in the game are pointed and you can tailor your play experience based on how many points total you are playing with. It would require some bookkeeping and there would have to be a group that tracks win-loss records on a per-card basis for large groups of players.... but it would be such a neat way to play this game.
Sending love from the Czech Republic!
Wow what a coincidence, I just went and found that Jund list today and started working on updating it.
6:17 this is why Wheeler has a canned laughter button ready on his streams
Like many who watch, I've never played canlander. I still love watching these regardless.
Did not affect the result, but Wheeler should not have created that last Junk. Veronica only triggers if you discard nonland.
Only watched the first game so far, but if Oppo Agent is worth playing around, is there a reason to not just crack the fetch main phase when your opponent is tapped out?
Loving the Lhurgoyf tribal deck, honestly.
James on tech - the best timeline
41:16 exiling a crad from his own graveyard would make laelia get an additional counter, which the trespasser and DRS both do. sad they missed that
Two wrongs don't make a right, but two Deathrites do make a wrong
Do you normally just go to game 2 after an opposition agent gets your 2nd land fetch?
I always expect czech pile to be WUBR, cause those are the colours on the zech flag if wre handwave the black in as borders
We're so back baby
I like the new editing. WTG
my favorite lhurgoyf is my foil deckmaster copy of the og lhurgofy. love weirdo prints and old border foils
God it makes me so happy watching this show (I literally just opened it)
Would love to see some Alex vs wheeler canlander!
beautiful magic. thanks for the video.
I've been playing Jund delirium in historic brawl and now I'm curious if it would work as a Canadian Highlander deck
Bet the players in the Discord could tell you.
My vacation deck vs. my forever deck ❤
Ooooh, longer runtime. Happy happy!
So we just finished game 2 after 26 minutes with 45 minutes left...This is going to be a good one
Thank you for the "third string" "this will do" podcast.
Wheeler looking fresh in the white Forces 😮💨
They did it guys, they resolved an opposition agent correctly!
Man, what a busted card
Love me some Canadian highlander!!!
Pyrogoyf is my fav goyf as a commander guy. It with Disa is a helluva drug
did you change the lighting? it looks lightener
1:12:00 my favorite lhurgoyf is polygoyf it's all the fun of tarmogoyf but more!
Yeah I’m gonna have to build Czech Pile. That deck is everything I want to do in magic; play jund cards and cast brainstorm and mana leak😂
i wish wheeler was doing the debate me elf pose in the thumbnail
What a brutal opposition agent!
i wonder if g2 serge should have hit the brainstorm instead of the bowmaster
Very least a paul!!? You should be honored to have paul!
At 49:49, I just realised the "achievement" reads 'simultanteously'... and now I'm wondering if I've missed it being misspelt in every video or if it's hand-typed each time and this is the oddity...
30:09 Spider-man meme
33:20 Spider-man meme!
I'm only 10 mins in and watching surge pass to play against wheeler's open mana every turn is nuts lol
0:25 hello how are you I am under the water please help me there's too much raining
My favorite Lhurgoyf is LRRgoyf.
The only disappointment about Psychic Frog is that it's not Creature - Frog Atog
At 42:08 if Serge uses his DRS on his own Graveyard he kills the constructs bc Laelia is a silly card
i love lrr especially the canadian highlander gamers
would it be good for engagement if we started a rumor that wheeler was a cheater
7:04 Niche rules thing: you do get to see your opponent's hand while you control them, but you can never see there sideboard. This is because it the sideboard is "outside the game," and obviously you don't control a player outside the game.
Worth noting that this is a ruling that has been changed, it used to allow you looking at the sideboard. It also now means that wish spells don't function when controlling the opponent, since you can't search their sideboard for a card if you can't look at it.
I've had my fair share of opp agents played against me on a fetch land crack to know that i crack my fetches when the opponent(s) is(are) tapped out.
jund em out baby
waiter, waiter, another 1.25 hour video about the funny cardboard game, please!
During game 4 couldn't Surge have been spending mana during the turns to the activated ability of shadow spear for the expend trigger of Muerra??
expend only counts casting spells
Why did serge reveal hand after oppo?
The Oppo agent ability gives you control of the player, allowing you to see any info that would normally be hidden including their hand
Waiting on Bowmasters when you don't have other instant speed plays has proven time and time again to be a mistake in Legacy, proving still true here
So many decks are triple mox. Maybe the committee should consider upping moxen to 4 points each.
The triple mox spread limits choices of other cards on the points list and also interacts differently for decks with fewer colors. Doesn't mean it isn't an interesting suggestion, but I think it lacks some context.
It’s been so long since I’ve heard the words “Czech pile”, and boy have I missed it.
DRS is so messed up.
phyrexian furnace mentioned
My favorite goyf is DaRCy. Hes the best Goyf.
Have to say I love a Detritivore
I thought wheeler offered to buy that thoughtsieze from serge like 2 years ago...
17:51 can always tell when Ben isnt on tech, we dont get the silly cool edits.
I heard where the name cezch pile comes from
Wow can't believe James missed the first achievement graphic. Really ruining my gamer immersion. 😮💨
Wet jund could also be called GRUB
Anyone who's favorite lhurgoyf isn't lhurgoyf or tarmogoyf is objectively wrong
clicked on this just to find out what a Czech Pile is lol
should the dreadbore have gained serge the life from muerra? from the way I understood it, it only "sees" the mana expended since it entered the battlefield
it counts all the mana spent but it only triggers if its on the board when the expend number is reached eg play 3 drop with expend 4 you can play another spell and trigger but if its expend 3 it wouldn't trigger
Hands down, it's gotta be pyrogoyf.
Opposition agent is so stupidly backbreaking in a tempo game like wheeler played game one. A pillage that also does 9 damage while fixing your mana? Seems like a fair and balanced magic card.
It got to fix because they were running similar colors. Sometimes you run into D&T and only get a plains. I do agree the card is cracked even when it doesn't mana fix though.
Too much GB, otherwise good episode.
