I have never played a single game of canlander. I will never miss an episode of North 100 Showdown. Y'all are just so freaking charming. Plus, the format and decks seem very fun!

I've been following you guys since the early days of Friday night magic and this is the only magic related channel I can literally watch all day every day
I love that the sentence "I cast this Consider" is always followed by the sound uuummmmm
One thing Serge missed with the interaction of stoneforge mystic and Opposistion agent, is that he could have just opted not to search with stoneforge's trigger, thus not allowing opposition agent to get a free card out of serge's deck
Nelson also missed, that he can look in Serges hand, as he is controlling him while searching

Note for the OPPO agent. You could have looked at Serge's hand as you control Serge. I also agree that Oppo is too much
Serge could have also just declined the stoneforge search. It's a may.

The fact that they resolved opposition agent wrong by not revealing Serge's hand really emphasizes how absolutely bananas the card is.
I didn't even realize it did that. Does that mean that, in formats that have them, you get to see your opponent's sideboard, too?
@@iluvatardis8804 you can only look at your sideboard in-between games, so no.
@@AmazingChestTTV You can look at your sideboard at any time (even without things like burning wish or karn, the great creator), although you cannot look at an opponent's sideboard if you control them
@@JoeJoeBear812 The ruling I found must be out of date then. Looking at the latest MTR you seem to be right.
Or that it just does something unusual. Very few cards modify the act of searching the library. Panglacial Wurm is famously a card that gives judges headaches for this same reason.
Fun fact: Serge's Flame Slash in game 2 should be in exile with a void counter. Dauthi is still on the battlefield with 4 damage marked when the Flame Slash would go to the graveyard.
Remember, kids: damage doesn't kill creatures; state-based actions kill creatures.
One thing worth noting with Opposition Agent, since you control your opponents while they're searching their library, that means you get to see their hands and stuff

Long day at work into North 100 Showdown (A Canadian Highlander Thrrrrowdown) is a true combo. Always happy to see it.
Just once I want them to resolve Opposition Agent correctly. At this point, it feels like they have some mental block keeping them from processing the absurdity of this card letting them look at their hand.
Noob here, what'd they do wrong?
@@johneaton3108 when you control their search you are controlling the player letting you see all the cards in their hand
@@johneaton3108 Opposition Agent says "You control your opponents while they’re searching their libraries.", which means that, while they're searching, you have access to all their hidden information, so you can look at their hand (and other hidden info like face down cards, etc)
@@johneaton3108 they said that the card was exiled under Op Agent meaning they could cast it as long as they controlled the Op Agent. It's supposed to exile the card and then you can play it at any time and with any colors of mana regardless of if Op Agent is in play or not. I think ultimately it didn't effect the outcome (and I do think they played it correctly even though they said it wrong).
They didn't do anything wrong. They just didn't play optimally. There's a difference.
This is easily my favorite episode of North 100 Showdown to date!
My heart goes out to Nelson, who milled TOR and Animate Dead and drew the Atraxa off the Thought Scour in game 3. Real bad beats.

It literally did not matter but it is very funny to see Serge directly read the card Comet twice in two videos with this deck and mistake a -2 for a -1 on the 4/5 roll. Honestly there's an argument there that the PW cost symbols in normal text are very squished and hard to see sometimes.

I love it when the two decks have all five colors with no overlap
So I’m pretty sure Serge didn’t mark the life loss from the first opposition agent swing. He should’ve been at 3 life less for most of the game. It doesn’t particularly matter since it turns out an 8/8 beatstick gets there, but Serge WAS incorrect when he said that by life totals he was winning.
That flame slash should have been under void counter right?
Funnily enough, the first piece of North100 content I ever watched was the Commander Legends episode where Jer, Serge, and wheeler proceeded to voice their abject disgust that Oppo agent had just power crept the Idiot Bird out of Canlander, and that a common blue aura that tapped down a dude and gave you the monarch was insanely pushed.

I think Nelly possibly should have turned the voidwalker into the initiative creature when he had the chance. Loses some damage but starts a lot of advantage while ahead
It's a bit risky to introduce the initiative yourself, when you are a relatively creature light deck against a relatively combat focused one.
@@nitramreniar Waiting for your opponent's removal (of which there is plenty) with absolutely no back-up plan is riskier.
hmm i think with commet, minsk and boo, wren and six…there is a naya friends deck in the format waiting to be discovered. maybe backed up by landdistruction and some monarch/ initiative shenanigans 🤔

I’m really glad to see Serge going for a point spread that isn’t just 3 moxen and a 1 point card. I know they’re kinda the emblem of the format, but they’ve been too prevalent in the last few years
Opposition Agent is perfect. 3 mana card that mucks one of the most broken mechanics in the game. Good. Opposition Agent is based.
EDIT: Also, I think cracking Dauthi for the Initiative creature when Serge had an empty board would have been a big deal, imo

That was fun to watch, The only decision I had hoped to also see discussed was the end of game 3. Nelson made Serge draw 3 and lose 3 with wretched confluence to make the burden counters on The One ring potentially lethal. Why not just use the Deathrite Shaman's activated ability there to make Serge lose 2 life? With 4 burden counters, 4 life still makes The One Ring lethal on upkeep but lets Serge see 3 fewer cards looking for the life gain he needs. With where the Swords to Plowshares was, this would have been moot and Serge would have barely dug deep enough on his own, but this seems sub-optimal.
The last game was a barnstormer! great games!

Damn, if Nelly had waited for Serge to tap the Ring to draw and domed him them, he could have had it.
....no? The ring doesn't damage on tap and Swords was the second card of 5, so even without the 3 cards from Nelly, he'd have gotten it as his 5th card and could've responded to Nelly's spell.
@@CrownlessStudios I guess I was assuming that Serge wouldnt respond to the damage with drawing since he wasnt dead to that alone. If he went to draw in his main phase Nelly would have had him.
@joshuahintz3792 No, he'd get domed by the One Ring and go to 1. Then, when Nelly went to do an extra 3 damage, Serge would respond. It doesn't matter when that happens, because The One Ring draw ability and Swords to Plowshares are both at instant speed. No matter when Nelly does it, Serge gets priority, can see he's dead, and responds exactly how he does.
This isn't a sequencing issue from Nelly. No matter when it happens, Serge has a chance to respond.
@@CrownlessStudios True but serge cant respond with tapping the one ring, if Nelly waits and does it in response to serge drawing. I assumed that naturally on his turn at sorcery speed serge would activate the one ring to draw cards to make sure he had the win.
@joshuahintz3792 Serge wouldn't tap the one ring in his upkeep unless he was fishing for a way to not die, though. There's no sequence of events in which both instances of damage occur without Serge drawing and casting Swords.

Am I missing something, or couldn't Nelly have drained Serge for 2 with Deathrite and still have lethal with the ring trigger? Then you don't have to let Serge dig 3 cards deep for an answer.

@@SyntheticReign I think he would've had enough if he didn't spend the mana on the confluence, which would've been lethal as well if serge didn't find an answer. the risky thing here was letting serge draw 3 to find the swords.

I'm not sure why serge paths that agent game one, I'd have imagined saving that for a Big Thing would be the intuitive pattern there

I hate that Oppo Agent is two amazing cards mashed into one. A flash creature that lets you control your opponent when they're searching for 3 mana would be great. A flash creature that gets you anything that your opponent tutors for 3 mana would be great.
Without the Control clause the opponent can just fail to find, defeating most of the point of the rest of the text.
@@Mordalon failing to find still makes for a wasted tutor. Also, black tutors can't miss unless you have no library, they would have to give you something

Seeing a player on a high ring counter gain life in response to the damage trigger to not die doesn't feel as hype as I would like it to be. Something about drawing 5 cards and finding an out cheapens the thrill :/
It's because the card is broken. If it was another card letting him draw to avoid the death, then it would feel good. But the fact that The One Ring lets you draw to avoid its own consequence makes it feel cheap.
@@SyntheticReign Lots of cards with consequences for drawing also draw you cards. The card is very strong, but that overall pattern isn't inherently broken. Greed's Gambit from OTJ does that as well.
@@Mordalon Yeah but Greed's Gambit punishes you when it leaves play. The One Ring can easily be reset with no consequences, untapped freely with other artifacts, it itself is an artifact so it's not hard to do more shenanigans with it, and it draws cards repeatedly. I'm not saying there aren't similar effects, but it's pretty unanimous that The One Ring was pushed WAY too hard. Even just a black pip in its cost would've balanced it some, since there would be a cost. It's ABSURDLY good.
@@SyntheticReign You missed my point. I know Greed's Gambit isn't as good and has other downsides. My point was that, in a vacuum, the design of "card with downside that also draws you a bunch of cards which can get you ways of circumventing that downside" is something that exists on a ton of cards. That is not inherently broken, it's jus the One Ring is specifically an extremely pushed version of that.
@@Mordalon Oh sure sure, that's fair. And I agree. The design philosophy isn't inherently broken, but I'd say it's clearly no strict enough if it allows cards like this to exist XD but yes, I apologize, I missed your point.
