I wanna see what a regular 3006 will do. The availability of black tip makes me think it wouldn't be much of an issue. Also would like to see 243 and 270. 7mm would be interesting as well.
Out of curiosity, are Spartans' Level III+ plates rated to resist 7.62x51mm M61 steel core/black tip? I assumed so, since Level III+/special threat plates from other manufacturers are rated for it. Spartan Armor notes that they resist loads up to 3,100 feet per second, which is well above the velocity of the M61 AP round. I've looked at the literature online, but I haven't been able to find an answer.
take the 550 plate away and regular FMJ (.30-06) would punch right thru that tree trunk. I have seen it happen while target shooting. I had a target on a live maple that was 27" thick from entry to exit and the round passed thru it like it wasn't there.
WhiskeyRiverRifleman Was the maple tree a Sugar maple, also known as hard maple? That is definitely some hard wood. Bowling pins were made from hard maple. Silver & red maple wood is much softer. I always get a laugh when you see someone involved in a TV or movie gun fight hiding behind a thin wooden planked wall. The Chinese mil-surp 7.62X39MM, imported back in the 1980's, had a steel core. (Of course, Clinton banned the importation of it. It was cheaper to shoot than .22LR.) We noticed it blowing right through 14" blocks of seasoned red oak like it was nothing. You could hit that wood with a hammer & it would barely make a dent in the surface. We didn't try to see what the maximum actual penetration was at the time, but I would say that it would easily pass through a few more inches without any difficulty.
WhiskeyRiverRifleman That is impressive. I wonder what the penetration would be for a 30/06 M2 round would be? I remember reading about G.I.s in WWII using AP in their Garand's to pick off German infantry taking cover behind trees. The G.I.'s would just shoot right through the trees themselves.
Not quite the way that hard plates work is level 3 is for non armor-piercing of 5.56 7.62x39 and 308 Level 3+ is for armor-piercing 5.56 in addition to stated above And level 4 is designed to stop threats mentioned above in addition to armor-piercing 30-06

You should use the same set up and test with a ballistic jell torso that has a skeleton in it to see,Tsince the plate did not deform ! then we can see if any ribs were brokenor the jell skin rips even the slightest ! Thank you !
How about the .458 Socom round? And I didn't like the way that the clay looked after the first three rounds. WTF is up with that? Did the clay adhere to the back of the plate or was the clay compressed from the impact of the round? I'm interpreting what I see as clay compression.
Jacob B. thanks! , btw a other question, what would be the best rpm for a 3round burst? 1shot mostly kills but to have a better hit propability ,with one controlled trigger pull instead of inconsistent full auto (2200 would be the highest possible with the mechanism, and with verry low recoil). What do you think what rpm would be good?
Just a question: why would you use armor that can only stop 5.56. When you're dealing with rifle armed enemies a 7.62 is a just a likely opponent? Not hating or anything just wondering.
Romanlegionary575 I believe the 3+ plate that they used here is rated for 308 as well. I think they say it is guaranteed for 3 or 4 direct hits? Or maybe I am thinking of Level 4.
Because shooting AR500 plates at 50+ yards with handguns and various rifles is just for show and entertainment and nothing was really learned. People have known they would stop that. Now the Level III AR500 plates would fail at 5-15 yards with M193 and for some reason noone would show that on youtube.... especially when the budget non steel plates were stopping it.
sik59rt Also in addition to my other reply, The Target Man gained a lot of notoriety on AR15.com before he or his products ever showed up on this channel. He promised us all kinds of close up tests with the Level III plates, because at the time the AR500.com plates would fail at those distances... He never showed us those tests and made a lot of people lose faith in his plates.
How many hits would say 1/8'' AR500 take? These plates can take a ton of hits with out failing, but how many hits would one person really need to stop? If 1/8'' could stop a few 5.56 rounds that would be good enough for me, and it would drastically reduce the weight, which is the big downside to AR500 armor plate.
