    In this video we pit a 5.56 SPR and 7.62 DMR against the latest offering from our friends at Spartan Armor Systems. The plate we are testing today is their lightweight Armaply Level III+ which is rated to defeat 5.56 threats at CQB range up to 3000fps with ease and up to .308 M80 ball. As always, we throw in a wildcard or two when doing these sort of videos, so keep an eye out for those. The results will surprise you.

    I've moved over to AR500 armor and noticed tons of movement or slip within my carriers (PIG, LBT, and Eagle.) I know the carriers were made for the width of ESAPI/SAPI plates. A friend of mine showed me a little DIY project that cured all of the above problems. Get a yoga mat or elliptical mat, and cut two stencils of the plate size, and glue them to the back and front of AR500 plates. Put some weight on them for 12 hours and you're done. By doing this it's thickens the plate up to remove slop within your carrier, also adds a little extra comfort. Great video.

    so am I the only one who thinks making an armor plate smaller more streamlined/ergonomic is a little bit of a bad idea? those plates even at full size only cover so much. with pieces trimmed off sure it covers the inportan bits but I'd rather it cover more than less.

    • @saltydiarrhea386

      It's an odds game in trade for mobility/extra gear.

    • @desired397
      @desired397 8 лет назад +5

      +Salty Diarrhea yeah I sorta figured. of course you could have soldiers running around in full suits of balistic steel armor like some modern knight but their mobility would go down the shitter.

    • @desired397
      @desired397 8 лет назад +6

      +Tombs Clawtooth I get what you are saying and I completely agree. but I found how you said it a bit funny, like saying I'm okay if my car doesn't have winter tires or a block heater in it but it's fine because I live near a mechanic. but yeah im sure it will do what it was designed to do and you won't get a bullet in your lungs or kidneys. though its probably better not to get shot in the first place.

    • @aaronorr3647
      @aaronorr3647 8 лет назад +13

      +Jeff Mcfarlane If you are taking fire from the enemy your strategy sucks. If you are letting your armor tank numerous rounds your mobility sucks. The ability to move faster and more freely while maintaining a net weight savings is important.
      This is the impetus behind research and development of TALOS, Boston Dynamics BigDog, and Polaris DAGOR.

    • @TubeYou7
      @TubeYou7 8 лет назад +5

      +Jeff Mcfarlane It's kind of like the trade offs you make for a smaller more concealable firearm that's harder to shoot but easier/lighter to carry and just like with firearms the best one is the one you're actually going to use/carry. Also body Armor is not really made for you to be free to take shots it's made to HOPEFULLY stop you from dying if you happen to get shoot.

      +Charlie Sulcer My point is, it only provides protection to a very small area of your torso, as if someone is going to magically aim for that tiny piece of metal instead of the reality where you'll get shot anywhere and everywhere else. The target area is ridiculous.

    • @theeasternfront6436
      @theeasternfront6436 8 лет назад +26

      +Andrew Clark Oh I know. But Ill reiterate, go out and walk around the woods with a bigger plate on, crawl under some logs, bend over to pick some thing up off the ground. You'll soon realize why there are cut the way they are. Sure a huge heavy plate would keep you safer, but so would a tank.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 лет назад +15

      +Charlie Sulcer Personally, I think that is a training issue, not equipment. No armor system will give you 100% flexibility that going bare will, however if you are going to wear armor, you minds as well cover all the critical areas and learn how to work in your new suit.

      +Charles Baker are you crazy?, that table is a 2x4 with a 2" thick top at most, so that's at least 6" high, the monster spider was almost as big as that, so that makes it a ~2" spider that's NOT a penny.... which in my book means "erradicate with napalm, run for your life".
      this is no 'straya where a 15cm spider is the norm man....

Just picked up Spartans III+ plate package, had a initially gone with the swimmers cut but changed my mind at the last minute opting for the shooters cut. Good stuff...though the III Plus is not N.I.J. official, however it does protect against those common rifle rounds...7.62x39, 5.56, 7.62 NATO even 30-06 at CQB range. Good stuff. Thanks for the vid!

    The M1A is a bad ass rifle, but if you get the Scout model.... DAMN! Buy a M1A Scout add a supressor, remove the factory stock, replace it with Archangel's Precision Stock, and slap on a 3-9x32 Compact Scope... Such a beauty! Hell, with the Archangel Precision Stock, it has a rail under the barrel so you can add a grip or a bi-pod (I'd put a Magpul AFG2 on it, personally)!

    • @hamsteaks5541

      I so want the SOCOM 16 in the worst way!!! I'm actually considering selling my AXIS II in .308 to help fund it...ugh...I just don't know because the thing's so damned accurate... and that trigger. Decisions decisions.

    • @Megames2012
      @Megames2012 8 лет назад +2

      The M1A is a very nice battle rifle, but for hunting, I'd stick with the Axis (I have one without the accutrigger, and you're so lucky to have one. LOL). For match shooting and all out war, go with the M1A. The SOCOM is nice, but the recoil is gonna be a little bit more, and just with two more inches with the Scout, you can get better accuracy at range. I'd say go Scout, not SOCOM; oh and also the M1A are heavy as hell! Personally, when I think SOCOM, I think tactical, lightweight, nimble, accurate. Just my views and opinions.

    • @hamsteaks5541
      @hamsteaks5541 8 лет назад

      All Games I would like to kindly say, at the last part of your comment that you're wrong.
      Accuracy is NOT effected by barrel length, RANGE and velocity are though.
      Velocity is key. That's why something like a SOCOM 16 should be sought after, a battle rifle for the backyard and could reach out and hit something with FIXED sights to a realistic 200 yards.

    • @Megames2012
      @Megames2012 8 лет назад

      You're correct. Range and velocity, not range and accuracy. And yes, all the M1A rifles can easily reach to 200 yards with open sights. That's one reason why I love .308. As for Scout vs. SOCOM, it's a personal choice. 18 in barrel or 16 in barrel? Other than that, they're the same.

    • @lylejohnson2360
      @lylejohnson2360 8 лет назад

      I have a socom II and I can reach out to 800+ yards with iron sights. your only limited to whay you can hit by your skill level. a scope is nice but why rely on one.

    M193 5.56mm out of a 22-24" barrel at 7 yds. Pop a hole right through it. M855 at the same distance won't. Any 308/7.62x51 won't either. It has to do with the higher velocity you can get with the lighter bullet.

    If I am knowingly going into a long gun fight, I want as much plating covering my flesh as possible...I want adaptable shoulder plates and upper arm plates, extended and doubled up gut and crotch plates, I mean you name it. Chances are I'm not going to be running a mile at a time between firefights if it's a stuck in traffic scenario or mass shooter..Grab and go I can't see how it would slow you down all that much with 200bpm heart rate. Mountains no but an urban situation? Absolutely. Just my .02.

    You should try that 110 Lehigh bullet loaded into .30-06 on the same plate. I bet you could squeeze atleast 3500fps out of that bullet in .30-06. Also a good test would be loading some 55 FMJ in .22-250 around 3600 and see if it goes through, or use M193 in a 24-26" bolt gun. (I already know what happens and it may surprise you)

    The plate looks really small for anyone larger than a child or a garden gobelin.. I'm 5ft 10" and 200lbs and that would cover approximately my left lung.. :D And with a DMR at least I was trained for headshots and throatshots.. And with a .308 a hit in the shoulder straight from the side would punch through the shoulder and right through the chest cavity if fired from anything less that 500yds. Not to mention gutshots.

    While these plates are rated at Level III by NIJ test standards, (for folks who don't know much about this): these kinds of plates CAN be penetrated by .223/5.56 ammunition. If you take a 20" barreled AR15 (.223/5.56) and set the range at 25m or less, 55gr ammo will cut through this stuff like a hot knife through butter. These kinds of plates are awesome! Just know, they have their limitations folks.
    Side note: heavier grained rounds like 62gr - 77gr can still get stopped at close range. I used a 1:7" twist barrel, and 55gr from various manufacturers will penetrate.

      Wrong! These are level III+ and are rated for high velocity 5.56, .223, even level 3 plate will stop .308 and standard 5.56

    Those plates may not yet be available, or they are having some issues with them. For grins I went to their web site to price one out and it's telling me that the product cannot be purchased.

    I wonder if adding a gel layer behind the plate in the carrier would help dissipate more of the energy before it transfers to your body. Add in like a 1" layer behind it if it'll help any internal body damage and even bruising.

    Get some better ammo, dude. The camera work was excellent. Do you have a new camera and high quality lens? Clear as a bell and great color rendition. (I'm a retired fotog and videographer.) Very professional - and as is usually the case - very informative and fun to watch. I was waiting for you to bust out the 50cal, though!

      +Dusty Rusty It was the suppressor causing issues not the ammo. Yeah they could try to find a better load for it to work better with the can but that takes a lot of time and money to do.

    Good evening Eric. Could you tell us what kind of a jacket you're wearing? It looks mighty comfortable for Autumn times. In general my humble opinion is that the clothing gear is a large part of a person's and soldier's well-being. There should be more information about what you think would be the optimal choice. Perhaps a video on that topic, when you have the time?
    What would you choice of a warm, preferably waterproof durable clothing for the Autumn, and then Winter seasons be? Brand names and technologies aren't as important to me as comfort and durability! Thank you for your time sir!

    Why the hell do people not get why they made this? It's made for concealment and comfort, not for soldiers to wear in open combat when a firefight is guaranteed. Still, some soldiers will likely use it. There are lots of reports of soldiers "going slick" and not using their plates, despite what they've been told, simply because the things are so fucking heavy and bulky, though this is mostly amongst special forces personnel. Frankly, any plate is good, and the more options, the better.

    Even 7.62x51 nato doesn't penetrate plated body armor, so there's no need for more powerful round than 5.56mm... because for unprotected areas any round will be just enough injury...

    I would be interested to see a similar scenario with a Marlin .444 Mag. I had an associate hand me his lever action, one day plinking. Upon firing such a long arm, I was certain it was meant for polar bear, and or bison. Able to disable a vehicle motor I would think.

    Also what twist is the barrel on that AR? I understand M193 being an erratic grouping load at distance but typically M855 is quite accurate in my 16-18" ARs. Odd that they were going all around like that.

    Who is the barrel maker on that AR? I bet that AR is made with high quality parts and put together well so it is interesting that the M855 or M193, whichever gave poor accuracy, was so terrible. If that plate is 12 inches tall, that is something like 5 MOA groups you were getting, assuming a 20 inch group at 400 yards. Then a 4 inch group at 400 yards with hand loads, maybe that barrel was chambered specifically for the 60gr Nosler (Partition?).
