An old man I used to know had some 30-06 "accelerator" ammo he brought back from Korea. It was 55 grain ammo out of a 30-06. I'd love to see some testing done with it because it had to be wicked fast.
Funny enough, 55g fmj ball loaded to ~3400 fps will put a neat little hole in your ar 500 plates at close range. Considering that's a 55g 5.56 projectile your 30-06 would definitely destroy that plate.
@@Richardjohnson6969 for .223 certainly but not 5.56, just look at ramshot load data. Ramshot tac + 55g fmjbt, the published load data for 5.56 shows 27.3 grains for a muzzle velocity of 3450 out of a 16 inch barrel and a pressure of 61,335 psi. How thick is the plate? My first thought upon seeing it was, "that looks really thick", but then Eric said it was relatively thin, or "not that thick"(I forget which.) Granted, all my plates are metal, but this plate looks like it's an inch and a half thick on video. Very light though. Perhaps worth looking into(or would be if I didn't already have 4 plates and 3 carriets/rigs that I'll likely never need/use in an actual firefight.)
@@Mockturtlesoup1 Old comment but it is thin compared to stuff like the SAPI which required a soft armor backer. If you actually want thin armor which you can wear under a shirt you have to go with steel or titanium.

Why? The most common hunting rounds are 30-06, 308, 6.5 CM, 30-30, and 270. Of all of those the 30-06 has the most penetrating power due to the bullet size and barre exit velocity. If it’s capable of holding a 30-06 black tip (which is what it’s rated for), the calibers with lower Ft-Lb/energy and lower velocity will not go through He basically proved it by showing what it was capable of with a higher power round
I have shot 444 Marlin through a disc used in farm equipment at about 10-15 yards in both FMJ and Hornady XTP hollow point. We shot a plow shear too and the 444 FMJ punched a golf ball sized hole through it, we found the top piece and the bottom but the rest was smithereens. The bullet diameter there is .429. Couldn’t penetrate the flat thick center part of the disc where the hub is but did tear 1 1/2” back the thickness of the material. I think some chunky hunting rounds would definitely be worth testing. I bet a 375 H&H would be tough to stop too, especially in a solid like a grand slam big game round. PS The other rounds we tried basically turned themselves inside out on the plow shear except the .223 FMJ made a bearing sized nick in the edge.
lvl 3+ is a great compromise plate. There's some EXTREMELY light versions out there and honestly I wish the military issued both so we could have chose mission specific whether we were gonna go full heavy or 80% as good at 1/3 the weight.
I was at the range yesterday and decided to test some old plates i had. They are steel Lvl 3. M193 5.56 went straight through them. They defeated all 223 round i had tho. Kinda confused as to why. My 223 rounds were moving faster and were made out of the same material as my 5.56. Also my buddy had plates by a different brand that stopped M855 but did NOT stop M193. I got hit with an AK bullet in the chest back in 2003 while in Iraq. We of course had on our Interceptor vests with SAPI plates installed front and back. The plate did indeed stop the round from entering my chest but the impact still broke 3 ribs and brused my left lung. The impact did knock me off my feet (but not blow me back 10 feet like you see in the movies). Take-home point, High Level plates can stop rifle bullets but don't think you are just going to get back up like nothing happened,
That M855A1 looks a lot like the Remington Bronze tip ammo of the 1970s. Even though the armor stopped bullet hopefully it reduces the blunt force trauma. Every time you fire I cry a little for your AR. The a1 is, if memory serves, only 10k less pressure than the standard 5.56 barrel proofing cartridge (60,000 vs 70,000). Proofing rounds are not at all intended for anything other than proofing the barrel, 1 or 2 and done arguably for the lifetime of the barrel. Repeatedly firing, especially rapidly, the a1 drops your barrel life by about half and will, if rngesus is against you, snap your bolt (500-1000 rounds), beat the dog shit out of your recoil system, and occasionally splits a crack into a receiver once you break 1000rds (assuming something else didn't fail before you got to 1k). It's a great round. I very nearly bought a bunch after I fired some before doing the due diligence on a cartridge I wasn't familiar with. The problem with the a1 is that there isn't currently a rifle that exists that can run it consistently without the ammo eating the rifle instead of vice versa. Hey Eric and team IV8888 👋🏽 M855A1 😯 everything’s better with steak sauce That’s insane it stopped 7.62x54r at 100 Tell daisy to stop eating the bench legs
The Mosen fires a 7.62 from a 54mm cartridge, please say that. Also, a .30 cal threat and a .22 threat can jave VERY different results on different armor. Mass, size, and velocity all matter.
I would also love to see some super hot 6ARC loadings tested vs various armor! I have a feeling that because of the design of the round (high bc ect) it will slip right through that armor! Especially a light for caliber, like 80 grain out of a full length 6ARC SPR.
I would be very interested to see another test like this, but with ballistic gel on the other side as a comparison to see what those rounds would do to the gel after punching through a plate
Very interesting, with round to round minor velocity differences and minor manufacturing variations of the plate that stand off distance might vary a few yards either way shot to shot placement to placement, heck even if the angle of the plate is a few degrees tilted the apparent thickness changes minutely but all these things could go for you or maybe they could stack up the other way too. 30-06 is an effective round in most loadings, amazing that it’s over 100 years ago that was adopted and it’s still a formidable cartridge. I have never fired one but I have heard enough stories to know they’re effective. Have you thought about trying a hunting round like a 444 Marlin with a soft point ? They say that at about 100 yards and under that’ll take any animal in North America. That round I have fired. Based on what some reloads can do from a 14” pistol barrel to a water jug or a disc blade it would be interesting to see what a rifle would do with a few more inches of barrel against a plate.
I thought you were talking to me when you asked if the m855a1 would make it through and I answered. Was alil embarrassed when the guy behind the camera answered
So... What I'm hearing is I should buy 30-06 black tip and pull the projectiles and then load them into a 300 PRC or win mag. Muy interesante. On a side note I wonder if the M855A1 loaded into something like a 22-250 or 22 Creedmoor could defeat that plate from farther away AND if the added velocity could enable it to defeat level 4 armor. These are the things we need to know.
Or we could stop pussyfooting and if they wont sell us ap we put them on hit lists for human rights violations and hang uo most wanted posters with rewards, wanted dead or alive.
Oh and don't buy AR500 or steel for body armor. Think about the fact that Level III+ steel armor (basically required since Level III steel won't even stop M193 lol) weighs almost twice as much as comparable Level III+ ceramic and can very likely splash shattered bullets/shrapnel into you if it stops rounds.
Yeah I know its a video game.. but that game got me interested in exactly how angles affected armor effectiveness, because it matters. Especially in real life. When I was playing world of tanks quite a lot (on pc.. not the crap way over simplified game they put on mobile).. I dove down that rabbithole. There's actually math that can answer that question.. although I don't currently remember it. Not that anyone would actually be angling theirself at 45 degrees while wearing a plate carrier unless the sides of the carrier and at least the forward shoulder were all armored lol

@@BuffRANGEus citizens need to resolve this problem and get bullets at velocities thst can go through level 4 and out of shorter barrels and higher speeds
I'm impressed by the Mosin-Nagant. It's kind of like taking a Ford Escort and putting a Mustang Engine in it. It works, but you wonder about the expense and really why???
Great videos and thank you ! 😊👍👍
Hey Eric and team IV8888 👋🏽
M855A1 😯 everything’s better with steak sauce
That’s insane it stopped 7.62x54r at 100
Tell daisy to stop eating the bench legs
Is that a mask with a moustache protector?(you're wearing in your profile picture)..
If so it's pretty sweet..
You have lost weight ! Good for you sir
I heard the new trend in body armor is cross fit plates!
I like that you throw the worst it’s supposed to handle at it first, why waste ammo shooting something you know it’s going to stop.
Bringing the word “knarly” back. Way to go!
Hello there👋👋,how are you doing today? Hope you’re having a wonderful day?GOD BLESS YOU!!❤️
Gonna leave an obscure statement here:
"the one that the cows picked apart".. If you know then you know..lol
The Mosen fires a 7.62 from a 54mm cartridge, please say that. Also, a .30 cal threat and a .22 threat can jave VERY different results on different armor. Mass, size, and velocity all matter.
Good stuff. Thanks guys
I'm disappointed that the graphic @2:33 did not include the 7.62x25mm Tokarev round.
Damn I have notifications turned on and haven't seen a video from you in months!
This RF2 plate uses a very thin ceramic strike face, so the chances of the M2AP stopping is very little.
But m855A1 clean though kinda surprised me here..
@@Bestportlandcleaners did you happen across my test of this plate ? It can only handle SBR m855a1 at 45’.
@@BuffRANGE Will be checking it shortly 👍🏻
I would also love to see some super hot 6ARC loadings tested vs various armor! I have a feeling that because of the design of the round (high bc ect) it will slip right through that armor! Especially a light for caliber, like 80 grain out of a full length 6ARC SPR.
speed kills armor 6 ARC just doesn't have the speed
Just noticed the Fender hat. Eric’s a true renaissance man.
I would be very interested to see another test like this, but with ballistic gel on the other side as a comparison to see what those rounds would do to the gel after punching through a plate
Would it be possible to test some of the RMA steel plates?
Those are just from Spartan Armor Systems
Royal
Majesty
of
Armor
There isnt any protetion for the punch of the bullet?
love these videos
Please keep the information coming
M855A1 was practically _designed_ for defeating 3+ body armor. It literally has no other application.
'06 blacktip will go through a brick wall or a 20'' hardwood tree trunk. Changes your definition of what you think is cover.
lvl 4 will stop 30-06 and .308 black tip.
@@semajniffirg230 I never said nothing would stop it, so your comment is a non sequitur.
I like the shirt Professor Eric. 😊
That Mosin is badass!!
Good video! Thank you! :)
Is there a 3+ NIJ cert? I thought it went 3 to 4.
I thought you were talking to me when you asked if the m855a1 would make it through and I answered. Was alil embarrassed when the guy behind the camera answered
Been a while since I've watched this channel
Thanks for the info
Love the series! You should do another one with 338 lapua and 300 win mag and see if you need level 3+ or 4 and at what range.
Well some MEN can carry that weight with ease
Great video
Great video thanks
Could you test how threats that exceed the level of the plate perform if you angle the plate at a 45 degree angle?
Yeah I know its a video game.. but that game got me interested in exactly how angles affected armor effectiveness, because it matters. Especially in real life. When I was playing world of tanks quite a lot (on pc.. not the crap way over simplified game they put on mobile).. I dove down that rabbithole. There's actually math that can answer that question.. although I don't currently remember it.
Not that anyone would actually be angling theirself at 45 degrees while wearing a plate carrier unless the sides of the carrier and at least the forward shoulder were all armored lol
M855a1 out of a 20 inch barrel will easily go through 3/8th steel plate so it's a narley round for sure
Awesome stuff
Brother, you know damn well overseas we blew holes through plates with our M-4’s and 855A1’s.
Steel core in 7,62x54R is not a penetrator..! It only replaces same volume of lead, because its much cheaper...
Haven’t seen that mosin in years!
Threads = threats
Love this content 855a1 get some. Look forward to the outcome
